Joy and deep connec*on were palpable at Featherbrook Community Centre during mul*-cultural week. In a move away from facility

management, re-framed in community development principles and prac*ce, the community opened its heart and put on its own

event, a community share lunch. The fes*vi*es kicked off with a non-standard, hear/elt welcome to country, followed by our kinder

team’s Kulin na*on welcome song, including ac*ons. This was followed by a truly hysterical session of laughter yoga shared by the

newly-formed local group ‘Ac*ve Young 55+’.

Community members brought a dish to share and engaged in a facilitated ac*vity designed to open doors between individuals, groups

and cultures. On each table, volunteers and staff supported dialogue from the heart, about the foods significance, encouraging sharing

about home lands, history, culture and most importantly family. From fairy bread to goat curry, the diversity was amazing. Food and

family are truly a wonderful way to connect people of all backgrounds. It was a humbling experience for all involved to bear witness to

the stories steeped in both joy and sorrow.

Community groups brought music to share and people from all ages, groups and walks of life jumped in and par*cipated, from

tradi*onal Chinese dance, to Le Petrel’s Mauri*an Sega, to the joys of Bollywood sounds. A community art piece was also made, using

*les created by all groups who use the centre, sharing a thought, quote, feeling, word or picture to represent belonging. We are s*ll in

the a@erglow at Featherbrook and can’t wait for our next chance to hold an event and provide opportuni*es for sharing and

connec*on within the community.

Events

The Green Living Series 2018 has finished and the response to the wicking bed workshop at the Featherbrook Community Centre was

amazing. Craig Castree from Edible Gardens showed local residents how to build a wicking bed that contributes to not only saving

huge amounts of water but also on how to best u&lise and plan your gardens.

The response from the community was truly be'er than an&cipated with all par&cipants commi'ed to working together towards

the end result. This project was a huge success and we now have a number of Community Groups managing the garden beds on a

daily basis. Make sure you check out the vibrant colours and variety of plants next &me you are at Featherbrook Community Centre!
