Harrison Hills City School District Newsletter Week of 12/1/14 “Home of the Huskies” DISTRICT OFFICE: Mrs. Harding submitted requested information to Ohio Department of Health for desk audit of 2013 MIECHV grant. Final quarterly report filed for 2014 MIECHV grant. Treasurer worked on Board of Tax Appeals information for spring hearing in Columbus. Fiscal staff attended calendar year end closing procedures fiscal meeting in Steubenville. Began organization and movement of records to new storage area. Additional work to be done beginning in January. Mrs. Snider attended the OMERESA quarterly meeting at Salt Fork where legal updates, Common Core implementation, and Etech were reviewed. Mrs. Snider attended the Superintendent’s Cabinet at the Jefferson County ESC where the Principal Mentorship program, AP and humanities courses online, and common professional development days and calendars were discussed. 734 Parent-Teacher conferences scheduled within the district Additional practice assessment information for Ohio’s State Tests distributed by Mr. Morgan. Harrison Central Jr. /Sr. High School

School spelling bee was completed. Thank you to Ms. Minalga for coordinating this year’s bee. Also,

congratulations to Nathan Seymour on being named this year’s championship. 1st Row- (L to R) 6th

place- Sebastian Miller, 7th place- Kyler Strouble, 8th place- Alexis Watson, 1st alternate- Mavrick

Shook, 2nd Alternate- Maddison Spoon2nd Row- (L to R)- 1st place- Nathan Seymour, 2nd place-

Parent teacher conferences were a success.

All administrators attended the district administrator’s meeting.

Mr. Ripley and Mr. Parker met with Ms. Minalga to discuss gifted services and planning.

12 winter coats were donated by the Adult Parole Authority.

Representatives Michael Beebe and Alice Dowdle are pictured below.

Chevron representative Anastasia Roof delivered a check in the amount of $6,500.00 for our grade 8

STEM class and field trips.

Walkthroughs and evaluations are done daily.

Congratulations to the Harrison Central Jr./Sr. High School Advanced and Novice Parliamentary

Procedure Teams both earned District Championships and will move on to compete at the State

tournament.

Harrison Central Marching Band performed for the community in the Cadiz Christmas Parade.

Administrative coverage schedule for athletic events was completed.

Congratulations to the Harrison Central Bowling Teams on their first ever match and victories of

Wellsville.

Mr. Clifford, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Hawthorne and Mrs. Macenczak attended a training on PBIS.

Mrs. Brooks attended a conference on differentiated instruction.

Insurance representative from American Fidelity was in this week to speak with all faculty.

Successful PD session over survey data and implementation of a math activity.

Two IAT conferences have been scheduled for students in need.

Harrison North Elementary

192 parent-teacher conferences were held last Tuesday, prior to Thanksgiving Break.

Congratulations to Alisha Steele for receiving one of the three Best Practice Grants awarded to our school district from the Jefferson County ESC. Alisha’s grant proposal was entitled, Leaping Ahead in Literacy, to incorporate STEM activities in the classroom by utilizing nonfiction and common core based teacher online resources with the 4th thru 6th grade classrooms.

Tuesday’s professional development included grade level meetings for preschool thru 4th grade and building spelling bee committee meeting.

Students in grades K-6 completed the “Student Safe Learning Environment Survey and Engaging Students in Technology Survey”. Survey results were complied and compared to last year’s survey results for November’s TBT submissions in grades K-6.

Staff members and parents attended the December PTA meeting Wednesday evening.

Donna Carpenter, Lisa McAfee, Angie Johnson and Jen Birney attended the 2nd PBIS training in Cambridge sponsored by the State Support Team Region 12 on Wednesday.

The Building Leadership Team met Thursday morning to review and discuss November’s TBTs in addition to other building items.

Students in Miss Jacobsen's 1st grade class have been working on improving fluency of math facts. Each

day they put time aside to do fact master on Moby Max. Students also do a weekly timed test that the

students graph and keep track of their own data. Students who reached 100 percent in addition facts

on Moby Max are given a Christmas bulb to add to their classroom math fact tree. Once students get

100 percent in subtraction they will add a Christmas light as well.

The following 5th and 6th grade students participated in the Building Spelling Bee held Friday afternoon

in the auditorium: Dillon Drapp, Harley Boyer, Bella Zatta, Brock Elias, Madison Stull, Paige Weaver,

Skyler Salsberry, Jordyn Stewart, Devan Woods, Malaysia Smith, Brinlee Fife, Alex Cardwell, Austin

Erickson, Allusion Curtis, Paige Boals, Thea Haney, Harlee Barbour, Brooke Burdette, Kaden Salsberry

and Kylie Stull. Special thank you to our building spelling bee committee for organizing this event.

Congratulations to 5th grade student, Brinlee Fife as she was the overall top speller at Harrison North’s

Spelling Bee. Brinlee and the five top spellers, Thea Haney, Allusion Curtis, Paige Boals, Brock Elias and

Kylie Stull will advance to the Harrison County Spelling Bee on January 14th at Harrison Central High

School. Alternates are Harlee Barbour and Brooke Burdette.

Harrison North is currently hold their annual food drive with the collected nonperishable items being

donated to our local food banks for distribution. The homeroom with the most items donated by

percentage will win a pizza party and a spirit stick.

Harrison East Elementary

The National Scripps Spelling Bee was held Friday at Harrison East Elementary. There were 10 fifth

and 10 sixth graders that participated.

Second Row- Jessie Modon, Alexandra Barcraft, Ben Puskarich, Kahi McCloud, Ragon Roush,Lexi Ferguson,

November 25th there were approximately 172 parent-teacher conferences held. All conferences were held individually expect 6th grade, who held team conferences. The numbers are as follows: PS- 36, K- 22, First- 45, Second- 32, Third- 23, Fourth- 49, Fifth- 46 and Sixth- 19.

December 2nd- Professional Development included School Culture and School Safety Survey TBTs.

December 3rd- Mr. Tharp, Ms. Ferrell, Mrs. Noble and Mrs. McKinney attended the second installment of the PBIS training in Cambridge.

December 4th- BLT met and finalized this week’s TBT.

UPCOMING EVENTS!

December 8th- Mr. Tharp, Ms. Jones, Mr. Bengier and Ms. Ferrell will attending PARCC training in

Cleveland

December 10th will be the DLT meeting.

December 12th Christmas Program will be presented at 1:00 to the public in the school gym. K, 2nd,

4th and 6th will be participating in the program.

o Make-up date will be December 16th.

Christmas Break will begin on December 22nd and classes will resume January 5th.

PAWS PROGRAM – After School Activities Last Monday the after school program hosted a Thanksgiving Dinner for the attending students

and their family members. We had around 80 people in attendance! This was our biggest Family

Night yet! The night was successful because of all the help from the PAWS staff. They provided the

food and the service. Many thanks, laughs, and memories were shared during this great event.
