roject cha engesOn 21st January 1890, two trainsfirst crossed the Forth Rail Bridge, travelling across 2,500m of tracksuspended nearly 50m abovethe Firth of Forth. This feat ofengineering remains an iconicstructure and today requires equalfeats of ingenuity to maintain. The exposed location, theextraordinary structure, 190 trainmovements per day and the busyshipping lane below, make thisfamous bridge one of the ultimateaccess challenges.

nsight onsite MScaffolding the bridge starts by reversing the conventional ground-upapproach. The evident complexity of the bridge, built with virtually noelements meeting at right angles, means every scaffolding structure hasto be individually designed, fabricated and suspended in position, highabove the Forth. Access platforms then have to be encapsulated inplastic sheeting to prevent old lead paint being shot-blasted into theenvironment, and to protect the new, glass flake epoxy paint from theweather while it dries.

The bridge is well over 100 years old, but it takes 21st centurytechnology and expertise to keep it in safe use, making our experienceon live industrial maintenance invaluable. In total, Harsco Infrastructurehas supplied 3,500 tonnes of steel scaffolding tothe project.

roject cha engesDesigned by architect Christiande Portzamparc to represent theprow of a triangular site in Valmyquarter in the Parisian businessdistrict and to link with theexisting twin towers of La SocitGnrale, La Tour Granite is 184mtall. The key challenge in buildingthis icon in the latest generationof skyscrapers was the faadeslope of eight degrees, designedto minimise interference with thelight and views from the existingtowers.

nsight onsite MHarsco Infrastructures SCF (self-climbing formwork) platforms were usedto build the outer structure of the 45-storey high-rise, with its tapering, broadening and angled slopes. The SCF platforms were always safelyconnected to adjoining vertically climbing platforms by telescopic andsliding elements.

With a width of 3.25m, our platforms provided an unusually deep andextra-safe work platform, designed for a dynamic load of 5.0kN/m 2 (without formwork). Every individual element was designed to withstanda maximum wind speed of 208km/h. The largest single element usedwas a platform 14.5m long, supported by only two brackets, enablingas many as eight brackets (platform lengths of 55m) to ascendsimultaneously with retracted formwork.

Combining leading-edge technical expertise with world class equipmentand project support resulted in La Tour Granite growing at a rate of onestorey a week. La Socit Gnrale is now doing business in 70,000m 2 ofadditional premium space.

nsight onsite MHarsco Infrastructures on-site team averages 500 operatives, a figurethat rises to about 750 at peak times. Planning-based maintenanceincludes regular inspections and upgrades of thermal and acousticinsulation, fireproofing and heat control for the miles of pipeline. Between30 and 50 powered access machines are in use at any one time, plus20 telescopic forklifts and 15 special aviation tow trucks for transportingmaterials around this vast industrial complex.

18,000 tonnes of scaffolding has been supplied on site, 97% of which isconstructed using CUPLOK . This offers a more productive alternative totraditional tube and fitting, being faster to both erect and dismantle.

roject cha engesA joint venture between Shelland Saudi Aramco, the MotivaEnterprises Refinery in Port Arthur,Texas, is expanding to becomethe largest in America and one ofthe top ten in the world. As partof this project, approximately 53new refinery modules are beingassembled at Cianbros ModularManufacturing Facility in Brewer,Maine, each requiring a vastamount of scaffolding to set all thevarious pipes and structural beamsin place.

nsight onsite MWith very little continuity in design, as each module differs from thenext, there is only one-eighth of an inch margin for error, as all structural, piping and functional elements have to fit precisely. The harsh winters inMaine add to the challenges of working outside at this scale.

Harsco Infrastructures own QES scaffold system was chosen for its highlevels of adaptability, which means different lengths and heights can beaccommodated without interruption, and projected levels of productivitycan be maintained. Scaffolding specifications for this vast and complexproject have, to date, drawn on 90% of the component range. Duringwinter assembly, some modules were wrapped in more scaffolding andplastic sheeting to provide shelter from the weather. Finally, after eachmodule is completed, they travel by barge from Maine, around the Floridacoast and then west to Texas. Once arriving in Port Arthur, the modulesare assembled together to form the refinery. This mega-project willincrease the refinerys current capacity of 275,000 barrels per day to morethan 600,000 barrels per day.

roject cha enges The Beta Sciences Faculty ofthe University of Utrecht in theNetherlands is housed in variousbuildings in De Uithof. At theend of 2005, the universitysgoverning body commissioned anew building to replace the existingWentgebouw PharmaceuticalSciences facility. Designed by the Hertzbergerarchitecture studio, the strikingnew faculty building brings togetherdifferent scientific disciplines in onecentre under a huge open atrium.Upon completion, the atrium was tobe topped by a large glass structure;however during construction of

the building shell, all work wouldneed protection from exposure toweather conditions.

nsight onsite MHarsco Infrastructure used a wide variety of equipment to allow maincontractor, Hurks van der Linden, to construct the facility efficiently.A temporary HAKI rolling roof ensured construction work remainedon schedule, whatever the weather. Lifted into position using a craneand remaining moveable throughout the project, the width of the roofextended to 39.4m, resulting in a total surface area of 1,446m. The project scope also includes 14,500m 2 of concrete surfaces, for whichHarsco provide supports and shuttering. In total, Harsco will erect anddismantle 65,000m 3 of GASS aluminium supports. 2,500m 2 of MANTO wall shuttering was used, alongside MANTO shaft corners, making iteasier to erect and strike the shaft formwork. Some of the shafts wereused as climbing formwork a few levels ahead of theslab formwork.

The central part of the complex structure is now under construction, with GASS shoring being used to support the concrete beams, incombination with 2,400m of EXTRAGUARD TM as edge protection. Other

Harsco equipment used on this project includes mast climbing workplatforms (MCWPs), mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), materialshoists, suspended access platforms, staircase towers and temporarymodular accommodation cabins.

roject cha engesTerminal 3 at Dubai InternationalAirport, United Arab Emirates isone of the worlds largest airportterminals, built as part of a$4.1 billion expansion programmeto increase the airports capacityto 70 million passengers per year. The 1km long terminal building hasa curved steel roof over a complexconcrete frame and a substructurewhich accommodates arrival anddeparture halls, lounges, restaurantsand parking.

The huge basement area wasconstructed in an excavation 800mlong, 700m wide and 20m deep. The arrangement of floors includesvarying ceiling heights and openvoids, making the construction of theconcrete structure complex to design,

plan and programme. The upper slabalso forms part of the aircraft apronand therefore has to support theweight of waiting planes.

nsight onsite MHarsco Infrastructure worked with main contractor Al-Naboodah JV todesign and develop a forming and shoring solution to meet the unusuallytight project deadline. The scale of the job was considerable involvingthe construction of over 1,000,000m 2 of floor slab with thicknesses of upto 2.2m and ceiling heights of up to 16m. Our GASS aluminium shoringsystem was selected as the most appropriate, cost-effective solution.GASS is one of the most sophisticated systems of its type, used onmany of the worlds largest and most complex projects. Over a 30 monthperiod, Harsco supplied over 5,000 tonnes of GASS and ancillary productsto the site.

Using the companys experience on similar major international airportprojects, a specialist team of falsework designers were based with themain contractor on site supported by close management involvementfrom the UK. At the peak of the project, our designers were producingover 300 drawings per month.
