When 13-year-old Hubertus resident Ted Colwell grewa 525-pound pumpkin three years ago, the 4-H memberdecided it was time to take his gardening beyond the back-yard.

That was when Ted, now an ingoing eighth grade stu-dent at Friess Lake School, formed a team of young gar-deners that has grown more than 2,000 pounds of vegeta-bles to sell at a farmers market and raised $3,500 for alocal food pantry.

Ive been a giant pumpkin grower for as long as I canremember, Ted said in an interview with the Express News.(After growing the 525-pound pumpkin), I decided to putmy extreme gardening skills to better use.

Thanks to his hard work and dedication to a seriouscause, the teen was honored in the nations capital in Maywith a Prudential Spirit of Community Award for outstand-ing youth volunteer service.

He was recognized along with 100 other top youth vol-unteers from across the country. The winners received$1,000 and a personal congratulations from AcademyAward-winning actor Forest Whitaker at an award ceremo-ny and gala dinner reception held at the SmithsoniansNational Museum of Natural History.

Teds moment in the proverbial sun came after countlesshours in the actual sun of using his green thumb for a morethan just a pastime. Three years ago, Ted assembled ateam of other youth (with a grant he received from KatiesKrops, a non-profit youth empowerment organization thatseeks to end hunger) to plant a variety of

vegetablesincluding spinach, lettuce, rhubarb, cabbage,

tomatoes and kohlrabiin his backyard. The group pre-pared raised beds, and then added soil and drip irrigation,mulching and weeding along the way. When the harvestwas ready, the team washed and prepared the vegetablesfor sale at the local farmers market, and all proceeds andleftover produce went to the St. Boniface/St. Gabriel FoodPantry.

When asked about the time and energy that has goneinto his gardening over the years, Ted credited his parentsJoe and Ann, younger sisters Rebecca and Maggie and hisgrandfather with helping him getting off to a strong start.

It all started with me and my family working for a fewhours every week and on the weekends to get thingsgoing, he said.
