Residential ServicesWe recommend that residential septic customers protect them-
selves with regular preventive maintenance of their waste disposal
systems, including septic tanks and pump stations. When you
become a Hartigan customer, we maintain detailed information
about your system, including dates of recommended service. You
will receive a reminder, every 3 years, to schedule service. Our pro-
fessional, trained and certified technician will arrive at your

condition report of your system.
Further camera inspections may be performed on the empty tank
and lines if needed. If repairs or other services are required,
Hartigan will assist you with resolving your problems.

Hartigan: Here for New England’s Wastewater Needs
Lining Systems, Cured-In-Place Pipe Repairs (CIPP)Hartigan offers a range of trenchless repair systems, from cured-
in-place pipe repairs (CIPP) to main line sectional point repairs. These
lining systems are an alternative to digging and replacing sewer lines
with cracked or missing sections of pipe, root intrusion or water infil-
tration without costly excavation to property. These trenchless repair
methods are aimed at the municipal, residential and commercial
infrastructure addressing pipe sized from 2- to 72-inches in diameter.
Video Line InspectionWith today’s new collection system demands, infrastructure assess-
ment is critical to any operation. Whether the need is to identify
infiltration in an existing system or evaluate potential problem areas,
Hartigan has the equipment to meet your needs. Our technicians
will conduct an analysis of all appointed infrastructures using closed
circuit video inspection equipment. Inspections are used to docu-
ment the condition of underground infrastructure before purchas-
ing property or to identify the source of an existing problem.
Hartigan Company’s video inspection equipment utilizes a self-
propelled transporter with a 360° high-resolution camera allowing
for a complete overview of your system. Our cameras will survey
lines from 4- to 72-inch diameter lines with moderate flows. Robotic
inspections reveal obstructions, cracked lines and leaks before site
work begins. All video data collected is
recorded onto a CD or DVD format for
cataloging. Hartigan will pinpoint your
problem so the most cost-effective solu-
tion can be determined.
Line CleaningHartigan uses the most
advanced line cleaning equipment
available. Our advanced jetting sys-
tem offers a method of line clean-
ing that surpasses the traditional
cold cutting or auguring methods.
These self-contained service units
are capable of delivering 3,000 PSI
of 170 degrees Fahrenheit water
delivered through high-pressure
nozzles to ensure the removal of all
grease and deposits from inside your lines. Whether it is a 1-inch sink
line or a 72-inch main sanitary line Hartigan will provide the jetting
solution for all your line-cleaning needs.
Portable Toilet Rental & ServiceThe Hartigan Company delivers and services portable toilets in Cen-
tral and Northern Vermont locations. Standard and Enhanced Access

Knowledge and Training
Where is Hartigan located?
Our office is centrally located in Middlesex, VT
Is Hartigan part of a big national corporation?
No. Hartigan is locally owned and owner-operated.
How much do municipal services cost?
We tailor service programs to accommodate your
municipal budgetary constraints.
What is your availability and response time?
Response time to any emergency is the highest priority. Our
fleet of service vehicles are constantly in transit throughout
Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and Maine and are able
to be rerouted to your location — within minutes of
your call.
What is a septic system?
A septic system is actually a small sewage treatment and
disposal system with two main components: a septic tank, and
a soil absorption area (also commonly called a “leach field.”)
What happens in a septic tank?
When household waste enters the tank, organic solids float to
the surface. Inorganics sink to the bottom. Bacteria decom-
pose the organic matter, and relatively clear water flows out of
the tank into the soil absorption area.
Why should I have my home’s septic tank serviced?
A septic tank is just one component of your home’s larger
septic system. Failure to service the tank regularly can cause
the entire system to fail.
How often should my tank be serviced?
The average residential system should be serviced every three
years. System filters should be cleaned every six months.
What signs would tell me if my system is in trouble?
Sluggish toilets and backups. Gurgling toilets and drains,
septic odors or pooling water on or around leach field and
pumpstations. Saturated ground on and around your system
What could cause my septic system to fail?
A wide variety of things. Incorrect installation and/or
placement. Overloading or exceeding the systems designed
limitations. Excessive water use such as a leaking toilet, can
cause a system to fail. Inorganic materials like feminine
hygiene products, cigarette butts. Avoid putting kitchen
grease down your drains.
Should I be putting special additives into my septic tank?
NO! Additives are not necessary for a properly operating
system
What kinds of maintenance do I need to do to keep my
system working properly?
1: Sludge that gathers in the bottom of the septic tank has to
be pumped out on a regular basis. Frequency depends on tank
size, intensity of use, and system health.
2: Don’t introduce chemicals into the tank that can kill bacte-
ria, that digest solids. The list is long, but in most households
this includes bleach, water softeners, ammonia, chemical
cleaners, detergents, disinfectants, toilet cleaners, polishes,
sink and tub cleaners, and caustic drain openers.
3: Don’t use a garbage disposal! ( They double the amount of
solids in the tank.)
4: Plant ONLY grass on or near the leach field. No trees, shrubs
or structures.
5: Divert storm water away from the leach field. Fluids are
being absorbed underground, too much saturation is not a
good thing.
Are there any alternatives to having my entire yard dug up
if there is a problem with the sewer line - such as roots
or cracks?
YES! Hartigan has the capacity to perform trenchless repairs to
collector lines, using a cured-in-place system called “slip lining”
This product is a resin-based lining system to reinstate pipe
lines to their original working condition.
