John AshChef, Author, EducatorIn addition to being a renowned chef, author and food and wine educator, many refer to Chef John Ash as the “Father of Wine Country Cuisine”. In 1980 he opened his namesake restaurant, John Ash & Company, in Santa Rosa, CA. It was the first restaurant in Northern California wine country to focus on local, seasonal ingredients used to create dishes that complemented the wines being made in the region. Currently, John travels the world teaching cooking classes to both home cooks and professionals. Most recently John Ash won a 2014 James Beard Foundation Book Award for his 2013 cookbook, “Culinary Birds: The Ultimate Poultry Cookbook.” His other awards include “Seafood Educator of the Year,” awarded in May 2014 by Cooking for Solutions, a sustainable seafood event held annually at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and “Cooking Teacher of the Year,” awarded by the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

With gratitude to our

Guest Chefs

Barbara HomChef/Owner, Night Owl CateringOne of Northern California’s favorite chefs for 25 years, Chef Barbara Hom has served on the Sonoma County Harvest Fair Board of Directors and is one of the founders of the exclusive Sonoma County Chefs’ Tasting. She has taught in the culinary department at Santa Rosa Junior College and consulted with groups ranging from Geyser Peak Winery to Westin Hotels and Four Seasons. Barbara was owner and chef of the widely acclaimed Fans Restaurant where she won the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for her wine list every year of her ownership. Currently, she does consulting for restaurants, wineries and hotels. She also lives in a Victorian farm house that she renovated on a 2-acre farm in the middle of vineyards, where she tends apples, plums, organic vegetables, edible flowers, raspberries and soon to be planted olive trees.

Daniel KedanChef/Owner, Backyard RestaurantChef Daniel Kedan is a longtime supporter of Ceres. Daniel’s background includes stints at local favorites Ad Hoc, Solage, The General’s Daughter, and Peter Lowell’s. He is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America.

In 2012, Daniel and his wife, Marianna Gardenhire, opened Backyard Restaurant to rave reviews and accolades including the 2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Their passion for local food and sustainable communities is beautifully showcased in their menu and in their generosity to their community, including Ceres.

Justin WanglerExecutive Chef, Kendall-Jackson Wine EstateJustin grew up in Asheville, North Carolina. He came west and took a job at Napa Valley’s Culinary Institute of America in 1999, followed by Saddleback Cellars and Santa Rosa’s Syrah Restaurant before joining the Kendall-Jackson Culinary Team.

Under Justin’s direction, Kendall-Jackson has taken “wine country” cuisine to a new level. Given Sonoma County’s array of farm-fresh meats and produce, it’s easy to understand his enthusiasm for creating memorable combinations of textures and flavors. For the daily food creations at Kendall-Jackson, Justin finds a tremendous amount of inspiration and ingredients from the wine center’s 2 1/2-acre culinary sensory gardens and local food producers.

Carl M. StimmelWhole Foods Market SebastopolCarl is an accomplished chef who embraces a commitment to whole foods and community. He began his career at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and has since worked at L’Auberge de Sedona, Bistango Restaurant, the Regency Club, Hotel Waldhause, and the Savoy Hotel. Carl has studied specialties including classic French and Sushi as well as German and Swedish cuisine.

Mission& Programs

MissionWe build healthy communities by restoring fresh, whole and organic food to its place as the foundation of health, and by connecting people in heart-centered ways to themselves, others and the earth.

Key facets of our approach include:

• Improve treatment outcomes, reduce health care costs and build better long-term health by providing nourishing organic meals to low-income people with serious illness along with nutrition education and the caring support of the community;

• Empower a generation of healthy, engaged leaders by placing youth at the center of the organization as gardeners and chefs growing food and preparing meals for our clients, and by helping them develop the life skills and empathy they need to thrive;

• Strengthen social relationships and sense of purpose – keys to longer and healthier lives – by engaging thousands of community members as volunteers and donors and creating authentic opportunities for connection and caring;

• Increase consumption of whole, organic and locally-grown foods to strengthen the health of people, local food systems, and the planet through involvement, education and modeling.

Page 11: Harvest Heart - Ceres Community Project...2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Their passion for local food and sustainable communities is beautifully showcased in their menu and in their

ProgramsHealing Meals for Healthy Communities is our core program which provides 85,000 beautiful, delicious and nourishing organic meals each year, nutrition education and a community of support to individuals and their families throughout Sonoma and Marin Counties who are dealing with a serious illness. We deliver a week’s worth of meals for the whole family.

All of the meals are prepared by our teen chefs working under the guidance of a team of adult mentors. The 450 teens a year who participate in our Sebastopol garden and our kitchens in Sebastopol, Sonoma and San Rafael gain life and work-ready skills, learn about the vital link between diet and health, develop self-confidence and leadership, and discover the satisfaction of giving to others.

In 2015 Ceres will launch a new branch based in Oakland serving low-income women with cancer and working with local youth. We are also actively engaged in planning for our role in Social Advocates for Youth’s Dream Center, opening in Santa Rosa in 2016.

National ProgramOver the past four years Ceres has supported eight additional communities in replicating our model by providing training, a program operations manual, an integrated data base system and ongoing support. Ceres-inspired programs are now operating in Summit, NJ; Bay Village, OH; Geneva, IL; Nashville, TN; Santa Cruz, CA; Eugene, OR, Grand Rapids, MI; and St. Helena, CA. We are in conversation with a dozen other communities, with our next Affiliate Training scheduled for October.

Nutrition EducationOur Nutrition Education Programs extend the learning about food and health to our volunteers, clients, others dealing with illness, and the larger community:

• Healing Foods Basics, open to the public on a donation basis, provides an introduction to cooking and eating whole foods and Ceres’ food philosophy. In late 2014, we will release a film version of this course and provide a copy to all of our clients.

• Each teen shift in the kitchen or garden includes a ½ hour education segment covering a wide variety of topics, from knife skills and how to read a food label, to local food systems and food insecurity.

• Nourishing Connections Cookbook: the Healing Power of Food & Community, our cookbook and nutrition guide, makes the Ceres Community Project experience available nationwide.

• Nutrition for Wellness classes, offered in partnership with West County Health Centers, provide clinic patients living with or at risk of developing a chronic disease with practical, hands-on classes and cooking demonstrations.

• Our website provides recipes, nutrition tips and information on our food philosophy.

Accomplishments• Since March 2007, we’ve provided 250,000 healing

meals to clients throughout Sonoma County, with another 32,000 meals delivered in Marin since September 2010.

• More than 1,000 teens from 53 schools have worked in the kitchen and gardens here in Sonoma, and about 200 from 15 schools have been involved in Marin.

• Hundreds of people each year participate in our Education Programs, and more than 7,000 copies of our Nourishing Connections Cookbook are in kitchens across the US as well as in several other countries.

• During 2013, 857 volunteers (408 teens and 449 adults) contributed 40,000 hours of time and expertise to our work valued at $704,000.

Bidding & Checking Out

⊛How to BidEach silent auction item has a Bid Form near it on the auction tables. To bid, clearly print your name and Bidder Number (shown on the back of your program) and list the amount you would like to bid. Each Bid Form includes a starting bid and information about the dollar increment that bids can be increased. Check back often if you are interested in an item and use a new line to increase your bid as needed.

If you are committed to an item, consider using the Buy It Now option. Simply fill in your name and Bidder Number at the bottom of the bid sheet where it says “Buy it Now.” Note the preset price you’re agreeing to, then let one of the volunteers know that you have purchased the item so it can be removed from the display.

⊛Silent Auction ClosingThe Silent Auction will close at the end of the reception, at about 6:20. The Super Silent auction will close at 7:20. No bids may be placed after the auctions close! Make sure that you check your bids just before the auction closes so you do not lose items that you want, or use the Buy It Now option to guarantee that you win.

Page 15: Harvest Heart - Ceres Community Project...2014 Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Their passion for local food and sustainable communities is beautifully showcased in their menu and in their

⊛Paying For & Picking up Your ItemsThroughout the evening any items that you have purchased or won will be added to your invoice and organized for pickup.

After the Live Auction closes we will post a list of all bidder numbers who have items to pick up at Check Out. If your bidder number is listed, please visit Check Out and pick up your items before you leave the event as this saves us important staff time. If you gave our event staff an imprint of your credit card at check in, and you only purchased Golden Tickets and/or Pantry Keys, or contributed to Fund a Need, you do not need to check out. We will mail you a donation acknowledgement letter within the next month.

⊛Silent Auction RulesThe minimum bid and the bidding increment for each item are specified on the bid sheet. To be valid, bids must comply with these minimums and be written legibly. Bidding constitutes a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item at the price you stated if your bid is the winning bid. The last (highest) valid bid entered prior to the table closing will be the winning bid. When a bidder chooses the Buy It Now option, no higher bids will be accepted.

⊛Live Auction RulesWhen bidding, please raise your auction booklet to be identified. If a group is bidding on one item, please designate one person to place your combined bid. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item.

⊛Terms of SaleUnless otherwise noted, all auction items expire within one year (August 16, 2015) or on the date stated on the bid sheet (most relevant for sports tickets, etc.). There will be no exchanges or refunds. Ceres Community Project does not make any expressed or implied warranties or guarantees on auction items regarding quality or value of items or services. Ceres Community Project has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered and sold “AS IS.” We have attempted to be as accurate and inclusive about restrictions as possible: however all items and services are subject to the terms and conditions specified by the donors. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted.

⊛Tax InformationThe excess of the amount you pay for an auction item over its fair market value may be deductible as a charitable contribution for tax purposes. All Fund a Need pledges are eligible for tax deduction. Golden Tickets and Pantry Keys are considered raffle purchases, and are not tax-deductible. Please check with your tax advisor for specific advice on this topic. Certain auction items are subject to sales tax, which will be collected at check-out.

You will receive a donation acknowledgement letter within one month following the event. This letter will provide the total you paid above the fair market value of the event itself as well as any items that you purchased.

Drive & DineExperience Ceres Community Project in Person!If you’d like to learn more about how Ceres Community Project empowers teens and supports clients we invite you to join us for a very special evening that we call Drive & Dine. You’ll arrive at our Sebastopol location about 4:30 and have a chance to see our teen chefs in action as they cook and package the meals. Then you’ll join one of our seasoned Delivery Angels on his/her route bringing the bags of prepared meals to our clients. Back at Ceres you’ll enjoy a bountiful and delicious meal featuring the dishes the teens prepared that week for the clients while hearing directly from a teen chef and client about how Ceres has touched their lives.

Each evening is limited to about 10 guests so let us know soon if you’d like to join us. Upcoming dates are Wednesdays, September 10 and November 5.

If the timing of Drive & Dine does not work for your schedule, we are happy to give you a private tour. Just call us at 707·829·5833 and ask for Deborah Ramelli.

Fund a NeedHelp Deliver 13,000 More Meals in 2014This year Ceres Community Project will deliver 85,000 meals – an 18% increase over the 71,809 meals we delivered in 2013, and we continue to have 20 to 30 potential clients waiting for service. The additional 13,000 meals we will deliver this year is adding $120,000 to our budget. Please help us raise $60,000 tonight to close the gap so that we can continue to serve these clients who so need our help and support.

Each week some 120 clients and their families receive nearly 2,750 meals. Each of those clients is struggling with the stress, fear and physical challenges of a serious illness. Most of our clients are very low income – 25% have household incomes of less than $10,000 a year and 55% have household incomes below $25,000 a year. Many live alone with little or no support system. The meals from Ceres provide much needed nourishment while letting them know that someone cares.

And at Ceres, those same funds help hundreds of teens learn about cooking and eating for health, gain important life, leadership and work-ready skills, and discover the joy of giving to others.

Triple Value for your Donations

We turn each dollar you donate into $3 worth of value. Each dollar supports client meals and does double duty by funding a young person to gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed. And thanks to our generous network of volunteers and donors, we double that dollar again through donated service hours and in-kind donations.

It takes just $550 to support a client with 7 meals a week for 3 months. During Fund a Need, you’ll have a chance to help us close the gap so we can continue to care for our friends and neighbors in need, and give our teens a place to learn, grow and shine.
