REST IN PEACE

THE PILGRIM'S CORNER (Continued from page 1)

WE REMEMBER St. Isidore’s storyline evidently having her joys and pains, her challenges and struggles; but remained strong to the test of time. Like the faith of the farmers/founders, our community will always remain strong to battle each life’s tempest and the seasons’ trials. We are profoundly grateful to the foundations they established, and in some moment of time our parish family wants to MOVE ON with renewed VISION AND MISSION coherent with its pillars and encouraging enhancements in our parish life. WE CELEBRATE. Along with our 60th Parish’s anniversary and the forthcoming Strawberry Festival, we celebrate today the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Our Church will continue to be a solid and dynamic community when we finally learn to reconnect to the source of our strength: the Holy Eucharist and the Church. Jesus did not leave us without his bodily presence; Christ still joins us to himself through the Eucharist. Therefore, let’s make every Sunday’s celebration of the Eucharist a chance to increase our love and commitment by reminding us of our stewardship toward one another. You and I have a duty to represent Jesus and to bring him to the world; share the Good News of Christ not only by words but also by how we live our lives. Take this responsibility to work against all forms of injustice; recognize Christ in the poorest and the forgotten. WE SHARE THE STORY. Finally, continue to share Saint Isidore’s lovely STORY because you and I have been part of it; you take part in building St. Isidore with your gifts, talents and presence. Invite one another today to be grateful because “WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED! If the only prayer you ever say today or perhaps in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough; and God is at home to that because God knows Saint Isidore has gone out for her journey.Happy Celebration of Corpus Christi and see you all at the Strawberry Festival next Sunday!

CSA MINUTE: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Vacation Bible schools allow children to enjoy themselves while growing spiritually.Through the archdiocesan Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools, your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal support the work of catechists, who plan vacation Bible schools in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. These faith-filled weeks during the summer help children encounter Christ in a relaxing and fun way. Dedicated catechists also teach our faith in parishes and Catholic schools. Their mission includes helping others to reflect on their Catholic faith and understand its purpose in today’s world. For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.

Most Holy Body and Blood of ChristThis day used to be called Corpus Christi, Latin for Body of Christ. With the Precious Blood restored to the people after Vatican II, the name was changed to indicate the fullness of the sacrament. It is intended that all of us receive the Eucharist in both species because that is the way the early Christians celebrated.Deuteronomy tells the story of how the Israelites were given manna in the desert, a food that was never heard of before. This food saved their lives. This reading is also the source of that line that Jesus says during his temptation in the desert, “that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord.”The Second Reading from 1 Corinthians is a clear explanation of what we do when we share the Eucharist. The cup of blessing IS Jesus' Precious Blood. The bread IS the Body of Christ. We are strengthened when we share this sacrament of unity. In the Gospel of John today, Jesus tells us he is the living bread that came down from heaven. If we eat his body and drink his blood we will have his life within us. We are joined to his body in the taking of the bread and wine. The Israelites in the desert had manna to keep them physically alive but they still died. Jesus’ body and blood gives us eternal life. What’s in it for us? I have said many times that thousands of people who profess being Catholic do not believe in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It is actually a staggering statistic, 63%. Where do you stand?

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL [email protected] DEACON BILL [email protected]

We Are Prophets written April 25, 2017

True or False? In the Catholic Church, we are trained from early on to accept the principle of distinct job functions. Often the qualification to fulfill the function is some form of professional training, and for some, the qualification is more gender-based. And, depending on the personality of the person assigned a specific responsibility, they may become very territorial and dictatorial. Thus, many Catholic men and women shy away from understanding their own responsibilities in the Church, to avoid perceived (or real) conflicts. And, in some instances, not everyone is prepared to minister in specific areas. But, every baptized person is baptized into the Body of Christ and is responsible to the church. And, I would suggest that the most critical role everyone serves in the Body of Christ is the role of PROPHET. We may live out this role intentionally or unintentionally, correctly or incorrectly, but we, by our baptism, are PROPHETS. In reading the Sacred Scriptures, we can get a somewhat distorted understanding of what exactly a prophet really is. Through the centuries, we have restricted the understanding of “prophecy” to a form of “future gazing”. This understanding is far too narrow to be an adequate or accurate understanding of our prophetic nature. The role of prophet is not restricted to those in “prophetic guilds” (cf. 1Sam 9:1-16), specifically called like Elisha (cf. 1Kgs 19:19-21). We do not need the visions of an Isaiah, Ezekiel, or Daniel to be a legitimate prophet. But there is a requirement and a specific task all prophets are called to fulfill. The prophet is one who speaks in God’s name. The prophet, the true prophet, is one who recognizes God’s “voice” despite the cacophony of voices claiming “alternative truths”. Thus, the prophet is one who is close enough to God that they actually recognize God’s voice.Unfortunately, I think, the prophets of the Old Testament are often too steeped in “visionary language” and apocalyptic imagery that God’s message often gets confused. God’s message is, though, rather simple: We are to care about what God cares about! What does God care about? God cares about the poor. God cares about injustices, and especially injustices against the most vulnerable (widows and orphans in ancient times), God cares about empty worship and false idols. God cares about mercy. The Prophets of the Old Testament were men and women who had a close relationship with God, but could only speak metaphorically for God. Jesus, God become man, spoke as God. The messages of the Old Testament prophets provided a skeleton of God’s cares, and Jesus filled out the frame with sinew and flesh. God cares about every person. The “love your neighbor” is, by God’s standard, any person in need. God has no national preference, no “religious” bias, no appreciation for wealth. God simply loves all people!I find it odd that people question: “How could the world get so far away from God?” and not understand their part in the problem and solution. When we, in our words and actions, ignore what God cares about we are still seen as a “prophet”. The question is: Are we a “true” or “false” prophet?

Our SVDP St. Isidore Conference mourns the loss of another member. Genevieve (Gene) Wieczerza was a vibrant Vincentian for the past 13 years. God’s tender mercy surrounds her and comforts us at this time. A life that touched so many can never be forgotten. R.I.P., dear friend.
