Where did that ten weeks go?!! It has been wonderful to see the new students and staff settle so well into Harvey SHS. Term one was busy with many extra-curricula activities for the students. It has been great to see our students involved in a writing workshop in Busselton and a Geography Competition with plans afoot for incursions and excursions later in the year in HASS, Maths and Science. Well done to Jodi Dyson, our new Teaching and Learning Coordinator, for organising these events. Anna Capogreco organised for a guest speaker for our Year 11 and 12 students (these details are in this newsletter). All these experiences help to broaden our students perspectives and gives them additional knowledge and skills. It was heartening to see the P&C had a good turnout for their AGM. The new President, Helen Thomas has been busy recruiting parents, prospective parents and community members onto the P&C. The fundraising committee have been busy organising their first activity – the Entertainment Book. Please refer to the advertisement in this newsletter. The funds raised will go towards a new activity area for our students, particularly the Year 7s. The P&C have also approved partial funding to replace the soccer nets on the top oval. The staff and students thank them for this contribution. We have a number of staff leaving our school to explore new opportunities: Natalie Tomic will be taking up a position at Harrisdale High School at the commencement of Term 2; John Grant will be taking the rest of the year on leave; Mishell Landwehr, who was responsible for the beautification of the western boundary after the fence was erected, is also leaving. On behalf of the school community I would like to thank them for their contribution to the students at Harvey SHS. We will welcome back David Ford to our Mathematics Department, and Josh Letchford will return to teaching HASS. We are in the process of recruiting a new English teacher. Finally, thank you to our parents and community who support us here at Harvey SHS. I really appreciate your efforts to make our school a school of choice. I hope you have a safe and relaxed Easter break and enjoy having your children home for the holidays. The staff have two (2) school development days at the commencement of Term 2, meaning your children will return to school on Wednesday 1 May, 2019. Kind regards Di PRINCIPAL Wednesday 1 May Student Leadership group at our Anzac Ceremony. We would like to thank our guest speaker, Mr David Marshall for his inspirational speech.

Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, based on the successful integration of migrants into our community. It is also about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background and is united by a set of core Australian values.

We celebrated Harmony Day on Friday 22 March, with a lunch and afternoon activities celebrating an array of different aspects of our multiculturalism. Students were asked to nominate for activities and it was a pleasure to see so many happy faces participating in sporting events, arts, music, or the ever popular scavenger hunt. Huge thanks to Ms Butler for her face-painting skills, Ms Millichamp and students for the cupcakes and watermelon, teachers who gave up their rooms and time, the Student Councilors for setting up and Debbie Lysaght for getting the ball rolling and organising equipment. Students need to be congratulated on their participation and alignment to the PBS behaviour expectations of respect.

On Friday 29 March, Harvey SHS was privileged to support the Hawaiian ride for youth. This amazing charity moves across the state spreading knowledge and understand of mental health, through their personal experience. The entire ride covers more

than 3000kms with groups leaving from Albany and Geraldton, stopping at schools along the way to Perth to

impart experience and knowledge. The ride also raises funds and support for Youth Support.

Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 took part in the assembly and we were all honoured and privileged to hear from several of the riders about their life journeys. I was very happy and proud to watch our students ask mature and honest questions around mental health. It was a pleasure to see the compassion and understanding that

our students showed to the riders and each other.

Harvey SHS looks forward to having the Riders return next year.

Harvey Teaching and Learning News

On Thursday 28 March, 20 students from Harvey Senior High School attended the Between the Lines

Literature Festival. The students attended two workshops. Firstly, Danny Parker a world-renowned picture

book author entertained us singing, juggling and using metaphor as a vehicle to inspire story writing.

Secondly, Mark Smith shared how he researched and created characters for his novel Road to Winter.

Metaphor as a Vehicle for Story Creation

Danny Parker How do the rules of writing for students help students learning to write? This session looks at metaphor as a vehicle for story creation. Danny will draw from Tree and Sarah and the Steep Slope but will reference other books (Molly and Mae, Crusts, Paperboy). We’ll trace how an idea is developed and then the business of turning this idea into a piece of work.

Creating Believable YA Characters Mark Smith In this workshop, Mark draws on his experience of writing The Road to Winter, Wilder Country and Land of Fences to lead students through the creation of the main characters. What does a reader look for in a character? How do you build those characters to make them believable? How do you interest boys in female characters and girls in male characters (apart from the obvious!)?

Harvey Students Take Part in 2019 Australian Geography Competition

15 Students from Harvey SHS took part in the 25th annual Australian Geography Competition last week.

Over 71,000 students from around Australia have entered the Competition, which is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography

Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland.

Competition Coordinator, Bernard Fitzpatrick, said that the competition gave Teachers an opportunity to highlight Geography in

their schools and challenge their students.

“With current international affairs, Geography is a vital subject that all young people should study. Understanding place and people, and the socio-economic and environmental interactions at local, regional, national and international scales is important to the

economic and environmental future of Australia,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

Students are attempting to ride or walk around Australia. Each student must complete 15 mins per day on a piece of equipment. The first week, we arrived at Windy Harbour. Students then research 10 facts about that place.

The students have been busy getting Cert work and TAFE units completed.

Spelling in the LSEP LSEP mornings always focus on Literacy and Numeracy. Our spelling is a large component of our Literacy focus. Six reasons why spelling is important 1. Communication: good spelling facilitates communication. By following the same rules for spelling words, we can all under-stand the text we read. 2. Comprehension: good spelling avoids confusion. In a way spelling is a bit like sports. It’s up to the person passing the ball to make sure the receiver actually catches it. The same goes for spelling. If you write with intent and proper spelling, the receiver of that text will understand it. 3. Future: let’s face it, University and TAFE applications and job resumes littered with spelling errors do not make it very far. 4. Computer errors: we can not rely on computers to check our spelling. They get it wrong too. 5. Distraction: poor spelling distracts the reader and they lose focus. It is hard to read a text for comprehension when it’s full of spelling errors. 6. Impressions count: when you have people read something you’ve written and that text is full of spelling errors, it does not leave a good impression. Homework classes have commenced for 2019. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to receive individualised assistance. Students shown here are working on programs specifically tailored to their individual learning needs such as OLNA support and career interest pathways.

Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at 3.15pm here in the school library.

After numerous nominations from teachers, based on PBS respectful behaviour, ten students were chosen to attend the Principal’s Lunch on Tuesday 19 March. Attendees dined on chicken and salad with vanilla slice for dessert and although the conversation was initially stilted discussions began to flow. A very big thankyou to those teachers who nominated students, Mrs Mazza for setting up, serving and cleaning and Mr Cavanagh for stepping in at the last moment. Looking forward to the next lunch in Term 2.

12 Step to Interview Success Program

This week Year 11 & 12 students were lucky enough to have a presentation done by Phill Cronin, who is acommunication skills expert and founder of Cronin Communication, an organisation focused on the research and development of how we communicate and connect with others. Phill has been training in this area for nearly seven years. Phill's presentation included tips on interviews, cover letters and resumes. Phill went through his 12 Steps to Interview Success Program, including Communication skills, decision making, being mentally prepared and planning for the interview. He spoke to them about researching the company they were going to for the interview and how to present themselves to make that first good impression and a lasting impression. He also recommended the students write some interview questions down and then record themselves at least 3 times to improve their interview techniques. The students were also given tips on how to write a cover letter and the importance of it. Our students have been provided with some really good tips and advice which will go a long way in starting their careers.
