Principal News…..
What an interesting, disrupted and long term! We started off with learning from home and finished with learning at school. The support from our families has been amazing. Everyone played their part. I am so proud of our school community, students and teachers. Thank you to our parents and carers who found themselves having to motivate and remind their children to complete their work. You did an amazing job!! We had more students complete their work packages than didn't. Well done; Love Your Work.
This crisis, while disrupting all our lives, has given us all new perspectives, developed new skills and most importantly built resilience in all of us. We really don't know what we can cope with until we have to. I feel that we have all passed this with flying colours!
Now that we are working in a "new normal" way, we have welcomed our partner primary school students to Harvey SHS for their High School Experience Days. Students from Harvey Primary School, St Anne’s Primary School and River Valley Primary School joined us this week. More are planned for next term, when we welcome Yarloop and Brunswick Junction Primary Schools in mid August.
Commencing in 2022 we will be introducing ATAR to our suite of courses. This is in line with our future directions. More information will be available next term as we work with our Year 9 students and their families as to what this will look like.
Enrolment Packages are now available for families considering enrolling their children at Harvey SHS. If you know of any new families who would like an enrolment package, please advise them to contact the school.
I hope you all have a safe holiday; stay healthy.
Cheers
Di
TUESDAY 21 JULY
Principals Lunch
This week we had our first Principal’s lunch for 2020. Students were nominated by their teachers for their efforts during Term 1. Those who received more than one nomination were invited to attend the Principal’s Lunch. Due to Covid-19 restrictions we
were unable to celebrate the lunch until this week.
It is a great opportunity for me to have conversations with our students on a whole range of topics including our favourite foods, pets and how our school can be made better for students. As always, I enjoyed meeting with our students and look forward to the next lunch in Term 3. Thank you to Ms Mazza for her support
in preparing the meal and serving.
Well done to all students for the demonstration of Respect for
others and self.

SSEP Students have been making
Snuffle Mats for rescued dogs at
BARRC (Bunbury Animal Rescue
Rehome Care Inc). These mats are
sprinkled with treats and dogs snuffle
their noses through to find the treat.
It helps calm and sooth stressed dogs.
What do "Grubby Gertrude", "Bertha the Blubberer", "Dribbling Drew" and "Peter Picker" have in common? They're all stories in the David Walliams comedy compilation "The World's Worst Children" the book being read by LSEP students throughout Term Three.
As a small art piece we have also created our "Hands of positivity" - collages of our hands reminding each other of all our positive qualities; and our "Hands of inspiration" (thanks Miss Fry for the idea), changing the fingers on our hands to be highly creative and useful implements.

Academic Extension Last week, Mrs Dyson’s writing group worked diligently to submit their entries into the Australian Children’s Television National My Place Competition. It is with great pleasure and pride that I share the completed submission by Chloe Perez, Year 7 (below).
Perseverance
In this day and age, information is available at our very fingertips. With unlimited knowledge available to humans, we can now do as we please.
In a small town, in a small room, a girl is trying her best to achieve what she wants in life. She is inspired to never give up. The tapping of her pen echoing only where she can hear, a sign of her determination. This desk was her safe space, a place where she could do as she pleased, without judgement. This place belonged to her. One day she would make herself go far, further than anyone ever thought she could. And just like a bullet, she’ll roar across the wind of life, piercing through any obstacle that stands in her way. The room she is in, in this little town, will be the place where her name is forged. Her purpose is her drive to succeed, to make the world a safe place for her siblings and the generations that follow. To make something of herself before the hourglass runs out. All of these factors make her motivation to be the best possible person that she could be. This desk made of oak is her paint, her pen and paper her brush, and the world her canvas. She aspires to be a person who is able to paint her name into history, and to have people relish in the colours that she brings. The silence which envelopes her in her room as of now, will become her noise in the future. All of those times where she was timid and shy, will turn into her confidence. Sensing all that is around her, the smell of the paper, robust and familiar and the looks of her handwriting, messy but nostalgic, she takes pleasure in these small details. Writing is her strength and her hobby, her job and her play. She’ll be creating her own story, she’ll write her path to glory, and when she does, she’ll be everywhere. For the upcoming trials to come forth, she is not afraid, for she knows how to overcome them. Ahead with a smile, this young girl boasts a grin, a grin that resonates with all her beliefs, which screams the words “come at me!” She is not afraid to fail, and that is what makes her strong. From every failure comes an opportunity for success. Life taught her that. And so, she says, facing life in the eyes “I’ll keep going.” So, they say “bring it on.” And as a rule of thumb, someone is near unbeatable in their own territory. Unfortunately, for all of my adversaries, this desk, this world is “My Place.”
Secondary Teachers can Code Harvey Senior High School hosted a professional learning opportunity for teachers from the South West and greater community. Hampton Senior High School are experts in the field of Digital Technology and came to share STEM learning programs to support our region in the implementation of coding and robotics. Harvey is very excited to offer Lego League next semester to our Engineering, Architectural and Mechanical aspirants.
Seek Truth
A long time planning for the High School Experience was over in a whirlwind of two days. Year 6 students from Harvey Primary
School, St Anne’s Primary school and River Valley Primary crossed the highway to visit the High School and engage in some
activities of Science, Home economics and an introduction to Student Services. The pizza making was a great success; thank
you to Ms Millichamp. We also had the pleasure of hosting Year 5 students from Harvey Primary School in an inaugural visit.
They were excited to participate in Science, collaborative work with Mr Brown and the Arts with Mr
Walker and Ms Fry. Thank you to all staff at the High school for their support and thank you to the
Primary students who showed respect for others, learning and the environment. I look forward to
future transition days this year.
A big thank you to our Student Councillors for helping out throughout the day!
“My favourite part of the day was cooking because we made pizza, they were delicious and I’m looking forward to cooking in high school next year.” Bryce Ratcliffe River Valley PS
“My favourite part of the day was that it gave me a look at what high school will be like and I won’t be as scared next year. I also like cooking the pizzas, the science experiment and Mr Brown teaching us the pencil trick.” Jet McMullen-Smith River Valley PS
“I learnt amazing science with Mrs Bonner, I loved cooking with Mrs Millichamp and I absolutely enjoyed those pineapple pizzas that we demolished. I saw the aquaponics that I thought was very educational. Oh and I can’t forget the Student Services with Mr Brown was a ball. I hope to experience that much fun again like I had on the 30th of June 2020.”

Harvey Senior High School
On Friday 12 June the Harvey police came to school. It wasn’t to bust students for having their mobile phones in their bags (despite
what Mr Quaife said) but rather to present a talk to the Year 7 - 10 students about cyber safety. Students were warned about the dangers of social media, chats and the information they post including photographs but they were also encouraged to check their privacy settings and the support that the police can provide. Constable Trent Rapley also got to field some very interesting questions from the students. Well done to the students for demonstrat-ing respect for others whilst listening to the presentation.
Tate, Felicity and Tammyn are comparing the skeletal structures of a dog and a seal, during Year 9 Science (Biology) class.
Year 7 Students examine Soil Science as part of their Earth & Space Studies.
