Principal News…..
Welcome back!! We hope our students and their families had a relaxing and restful holiday break and are refreshed and ready to commence the last term of what has been a very interesting 2020. Congratulations to Jodi Dyson (pictured right) on achieving Level 3 Classroom status. The primary role of a Level 3 Classroom Teacher is of an instructional nature, modelling high standards of teaching in the classroom and continually improving professional teaching practice. We are very proud of her! During our recent School Development Day, a number of Senior School leaders attended professional learning in Perth with Fogarty Edvance, covering Secondary Teacher Leader Program, up skilling staff in the capacity to become better leaders in our school. The staff that remained on site completed the St John's Senior First Aid course. This covered everything from snake bites to asthma attacks and how to use our onsite Defibrillator in case of an emergency, either on site or within the community. Currently we also have a number of our Year 11 and SSEP Students completing a four day First Aid course on site at our SSEP campus. Travel exemption support for students Families of students, who are planning to leave Western Australia for overseas or interstate destinations during COVID-19, need to consider current travel exemptions, restrictions and quarantine requirements if they wish to return.
The Western Australian government is maintaining strict border controls to limit the spread of COVID-19 and a travel exemption is currently required to travel into Western Australia. This may impact entry into Western Australia in time for the commencement of the 2021 school year.
Should you wish to apply for an exemption to travel into Western Australia, please refer to the considerations below:
Travel exemptions can be applied for through How do I apply for an exemption to enter Western Australia? on the
COVID-19 coronavirus: Travel to WA website.
All students entering Western Australia from interstate will be required to abide by the Quarantine (Closing the Border) Directions on the COVID-19 coronavirus: Travel to WA website.
As the advice regarding travel exemption applications may change, please check the Western Australia Government Travel to WA website regularly.
If you require further clarification, families can access support from the COVID-19 Parent Helpline by:
phone on 1800 882 345 (8.00am to 4.00pm) email to [email protected] Year 12s and Graduation Preparations are underway in organising our final Graduation farewell to our Year 12 cohort, which will take place Friday 13 November. I’m sure our Year 12s can agree that this year will definitely be one to remember, a mark in history. While each pathway after school is different and individual, the Year 12 2020 students have conveyed a tremendous amount of resilience in what has been a very disruptive and challenging year. We wish all our graduates the very best in their future endeavours. Regards Di Ray

Harvey ACES: Academic Extension Our Year 8 literacy students will be competing in the West Australian Debating League on Friday 27 November at Edith Cowan University. We will be entering two teams and they will be required to prepare for three debates over the course of the day.
The members of our teams are: Chloe Basten, Jorja Plant, Gianna Bacich, Chloe Perez, May Montero and Alessandra Santos.
Aurora Program Over the school holidays, Sam Smith and Richard Mead attended the Academic Enrichment camp at Point Walter. At this camp, a total of 70 Perth and Southwest Year 8 and 9 students, and 17 Year 10 students came together for six days of cultural and academic enrichment facilitated by Elders and Mentors. Year 8 students focused on the themes of relationship, journey and challenge Year 9 students discussed conflict, power and agency, and Year 10 students explored integrity, change and potential. The Year 8 and 9 students had the opportunity to try their hand at weaving with Sharyn Egan a prominent Noongar artist. They worked together to create a community art piece and participate in sessions with SHQ to discuss healthy relationships. On top of all the fun and games Uncle Noel, Aunty Annette, Aunty Gail, Uncle Malcom and Aunty Gladys guided the Year 8 students through a web of relatedness activity, effectively connecting every student to one another through family and/or community connections. While the Year 9 students provided input into the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition’s work to create a more equitable education system. Next year, Sam will join the Year 10s and have the opportunity to stay at St Catherine’s Residential College for the week. This will be a chance for him to live on a college campus and experience a week in the life of a university student.

In the Community…..
SSEP students have been busy volunteering in the Harvey Community. Maintaining the Community Garden at the Harvey Community Resource Centre. Students are enjoying the garden to plate process and cooking the produce they have grown.
Helping with spelling and reading in the Junior Cluster at Harvey Primary School is also a regular part of the SSEP program. It is great to see the smile on both groups as they work together.
Students have also been preparing for entering the workforce by participat-
ing in mock interviews. We would like to thank Kathy and Natalie from JSW
for their time and feedback on our students interview skills.
This term our in-class learning focus is upon short, sharp non-fiction animal facts sheets, personal, prompt response writing and time and measurement. After an outstanding work effort by the majority of LSEP students, students chose to cook "pizza scrolls" as an afternoon extra privilege. Absolutely outstanding effort LSEP.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)
RYPEN is a weekend leadership camp, held once a year and supported by our local Harvey Rotary Club. It is a successful youth program, where Year 10 students, across different high schools in Western Australia meet and participate in different activities.
RYPEN aims to provide young people with the opportunity to develop their potential and self-esteem, as well as provide experiences that will assist young people to form their own values and moral standards, as well as broaden their cultural, social and academic horizon.
RYPEN encourages young people to explore their ideas of problem solving in team and group activities. RYPEN also builds young people’s confidence and develops skills to cope with a wide range of situations.
The selection criteria is for year 10 students who have leadership potential as well as positive attributes.
The Harvey Rotary Club have a commitment to our youth and as such, paid for Tye Chambers and Ash Riches to attend the RYPEN camp at the Baptist Camp Centre in Serpentine on the weekend of 11-13 September. Ash and Tye met many peers from varying backgrounds and had a busy and fun weekend. Both boys encourage other students to take up the opportunity and experience in 2021.
Tye and Ash were invited back to the Harvey Rotary Club meeting, to speak to the Rotarians about their weekend and the experiences gained. Mr Charlie Baggetta said both boys spoke well and were great representatives for our school. Well done Tye and Ash!
Harvey Senior High School are grateful to the Harvey Rotary Club for providing the opportunity and experience for our students.

The Senior School Photography students have been getting inspired by the photomontage works of Hannah Hoch and David Hockney this semester. This meant they had to stretch their imagination as well as their skills in Photoshop. The great outcomes really showed off the students attention to details but also showed inspiration from their cultures, whether it be their origin or school
culture and experiences.
We hope you enjoy looking at the designs as much as we enjoyed the
process.

On Monday 19 October we were fortunate enough to have a local St John Ambulance trainer on-site to deliver Provide First Aid to 15 of our staff. Our presenter provided us with the experience, confidence and knowledge to equip us with skills to assist in emergencies or medical situations within our school, community or family. I think I speak on behalf of all participants when I say I feel far more comfortable if I am faced with any number of situations including snake bites, asthma attacks, broken bones, seizures, choking and
bleeds. The role modelling was a special highlight. I especially liked the moment when, whilst at a makeshift picnic in the library, I had laid on a large plastic ant, which bit my back and gave me an anaphylactic reaction requiring the use of an EpiPen for treatment. On recovery I was suddenly so hungry that I choked on my plastic food and was struggling to breath, requiring firm blows to my back to dislodge the blockage. Only to go into an asthma attack from the stress!! I don’t wish any of these events on anyone though felt very privileged to have the medical assistance close at
hand. Kelly Servaas, MCS
