This is the third platform in the station with direct access from Mambalam side. The double-discharge platform is a much-needed facility where commuters can get down from both sides of an EMU. Hitherto, passengers from Mambalam side had to climb the overbridge to enter/exit the platform, and to avoid it, many crossed the tracks thereby risking their lives. Also, since the train stops for only a few seconds, having such a platform can bring down accidents. A ramp has been provided for disabled persons and he elderly. Commuters say, the platform leaves a lot to be desired and was completed in a hurry for the inauguration. It lacks a roof and cons- truction debris and other materials have been dumped near the entrance and there is lose gravel on the floor, making it slippery for commuters. The platform is in darkness at night as most lights are not burning. Railway officials have assured to solve the problems at the earliest. TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK
With advancing age and changing trends in Tamil film musicunder the impact of Hindi film and western music, PapanasamSivan began to move away from movies and dedicated himselfto Classical Carnatic Music. He was, though belatedly,honoured with the title ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ by Madras MudicAcademy.
Cinema has contributed immensely to Thamizh Isai and itall began with Papanasam Sivan way back in the 1930s. Theman is no more but his music and film songs shall live forever.Man is transient but art is immortal. So is Papanasam Sivan,the “Thamizh Thyagaiah”.
V. V. Satagopan - The Forgotten HeroMovies began to talk and sing in Tamil in 1931. As early
Tamil cinema inherited the legacy of the Tamil theater, music,or more precisely songs, dominated Tamil films. Films con-tained as many as fifty songs and this number was advertisedwith pride on posters, in song books, and elsewhere. In thebygone decades, all films had song books which were sold atmovie houses, shops and by pavement book sellers at lowprices. Today they are great sources of information and a partof film history. The books gave the story in a capsule, creditsof artistes and technicians and the songs. Sometimes even theragas were mentioned. Some had even still photos which areinvaluable today. Sadly the practice of bringing out song booksdied some years ago and that important source of film historyis lost forever. Today such old film aong books are collector’sitems.
Until the late 1930s there was no voice-lending behind thescreen due to lack of necessary technical facilities for such asystem. The actor had to sing himself or herself while thecamera rolled. (In Hollywood the word ‘actor’ is used for bothsexes, thanks to Women’s Lib!).
Consequently producers sought the services of stage actorsand Classical Carnatic musicians. Thus, during the 1930s andthe early 1940s, many such musicians came into films but notmany lasted for long. The reasons were many. Firstly therewere not actors by inclination nor did they have any profes-sional training in acting. Secondly most of them were Brah-mins and they could not shed their Brahminical accent whiledelivering the dialogues! Most of them came from orthodox andtradition-bound families and the freewheeling ‘leisure-plea-sure’, easygoing, fun-loving, female-filled ambience did not helpmatters! After a film or two they went back to their world ofmusic. Of course not all of them were saints but social and peerpressures forced them to keep up appearances and play thegame of social hypocrisy!
This list of noted classical male musicians includesMaharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer (one film), MusiriSubramania Iyer (one film), Thiruvavaduthurai N. RajaratnamPillai (one film), G. N. Balasubramaniam (five films). And inthat list was another musician, V. V. Satagopan. For a shortperiod he was in movies and, in spite of his handsome looks andsinging talents, stardom eluded him.
‘V.V. Satagopan, B. A.’, as he was styled in the film credits,hailed from an orthodox middle class Brahmin Ayyangarfamily. He had good looks and showed a flair for music even atan early age. Like many middle class young men of his time hewent to college and took his B. A Degree. Besides he underwenttraining in Classical Carnatic Music and attained a goodstandard of proficiency. Not surprisingly he cut gramophonerecords (then known as ‘plates’) for Columbia Recording Com-pany. The most successful song he recorded was SaintThyagaraja Swamigal’s composition in raga ‘SaraswathiManohari’ , “Entha Vedukonthu O Raghavaaa”. The disc wasa best seller and indeed that song and Satagopan becamesynonymous! Like “Nagumomu” and Musiri Subramania Iyer!
Satagopan took his bow in movies in 1937 with a now-forgotten film ‘Navayuvan’ (Modern Youth) or ‘Geetha Saaram’.In that era Tamil films had two titles, with one in English too!As Tamil films played all over South India in that era with nosub-titles or dubbing, an English title was given to make non-Tamil moviegoers understand what the film would be all about.

The Ashwin Maharaj Foundation, which organizes musicsessions in cancer wards of hospitals, was established inmemory of Ashwin Maharaj Ramasubramanian in December2015 by his parents R. Manonmani and D. Ramasubramanian(residents of T. Nagar).
Ashwin had lost the battle to cancer in 2015.According to his parents, their son who was in college at the
time, found great solace in trauma and pain by listening tomusic. “It was his no cost and most effective pain killer and amood elevator. He used to feel better and get sound sleep,” saysAshwin’s mother Manonmani.
“His loss motivated us to do something for terminally illcancer patients in hospitals in the city. It was also our son’swish that music be used to alleviate the distress faced bycancer patients, especially those from the lower rungs ofsociety, and we decided to fulfill it”, they said.
Initially started with the help of Ashwin’s friends, theFoundation today has more than 100 volunteers who organizemusic sessions in cancer wards in hospitals. The Foundationis also supported by music societies of SSN College ofEngineering, Ethiraj College for Women, Stella Maris College,Women’s Christian College and Anna University.
Age-appropriate songs, melodious songs from films andpoems of Subramania Bharati and rhymes for children areusually presented. Patients, their family members andcaregivers are also encouraged to sing along to take their mindaway from the pain and worries.

Banks should not charge any fee for cashtransactions
Sir, Some banks have started charging a fee for cashtransactions from savings bank account holders beyond fourfree transactions a month.
This is nothing but daylight robbery. Having lured customersinto opening accounts with tall promises, does this move notamount to betrayal of trust?
Why should a customer be penalized for transacting his owncash, be it withdrawal or deposit? What is the rationale behindthis move? Is it to reduce cash transactions with the thrust foronline banking or do these banks not have enough money topay their staff, or are the staff over-worked and transactionsbeyond five will further burden them?
Many, especially senior citizens and housewives, openaccounts to avoid keeping cash at home and withdraw in bitsand pieces as per their needs. Why should they be taxed forwithdrawing money at their own convenience? And, who arethese banks to put a cap on transactions?

smart ration cards will be issued from April 1.We have been hearing about the issue of smart cards to
replace the existing ration cards for the past couple of years.Only in the past few months has the work picked up pace withlinking of the Aadhaar number to ration card. Still, much workis left as many are yet to complete the process.
With smart cards, it is expected that there will be bettercontrol over the PDS system and the commodities will reachthe beneficiaries instead of getting diverted to the open market

Looking at the guy named Trump, the latest addition to the galleryof dictators foolishly rung in by the American voters, my mindtravelled back several years when I was the Government Pleader inthe Madras High Court.
One evening, after court hours, a family group of my wife Lakshmiand daughter-in-law Monisha and a man from Kanchipuram Coop-erative Bank marched into my chamber with a request from theKanchi man for an opinion on a legal point from me.
I hate pressing the button to call for the help of my staff, and sogot up and called the newest stenographer to take my opinion. Shewas a pretty girl freshly appointed by the State Government andtransferred to the G.P’s office.
The girl (I forget her name now after so many years) took myblabber correctly and the opinion was ready in 10 minutes.
“Sir, I have come here several times in the past and had to spenda minimum of two days in the city for urgent opinions on legal pointsconcerning the eligibility of the Kanchipuram silk producers for grantof loans. Often I had to toil even three or four days to get the opinion.Thank you. I shall give you the name of the Silk Emporium whosought the loan so that they will, if you buy any silk saree from them,give you a rebate”.
I thanked him but said, “I don’t buy silk since it is a product ofcruelty”.
The new stenographer, a beautiful one, was shocked!The typed opinion was ready in ten minutes and the seeker of
opinion went home saving the day’s lodging charges. The stenogra-pher was all smiles but was in tears when I left the post some monthslater.

On Feb. 25, the second phaseof the trial run for thepedestrian plaza in T. Nagartook a predictable course withpedestrians welcoming theinitiative and local tradersaccusing Chennai Corporationof scant consideration for theirwelfare.
But compared to the 1st triallast November, this time therewas lukewarm response fromthe residents.
The trial run was carried outbetween Thanikachalam Roadjunction and Panagal Park, adistance of around 700 metres,from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
