Innovation has always been the true driving force of Brembo. The communication instruments adopted by the Company implement this approach, through constant updates and renewal as time progresses.

We live in a digital society characterised by an excess of information, in which we are constantly hovering between being overwhelmed and limited to a very superficial understanding of things. Infographics, in various forms, are a response to this need for decoding reality and constitute a new communication tool that aims to graphically display complex information, making them understandable without impoverishing the more noble content.

Drawing on the experience and expertise of its technicians, Brembo

has created a series of infographics, one for each 2014 GrandPrix of Formula 1 and MotoGP championship, which summarise the most significant values of braking system use on the race track and in the various circuits. Furthermore, “special” infographics have been created to illustrate the main components of Brembo brake systems used in F1 and MotoGP, comparable to the same Brembo products for road cars and bikes.

These infographics have been proposed throughout the entire motor season on social networks in which Brembo is present, and have achieved great success, further contributing to the growth and the involvement of the Brembo community.

This volume, dedicated to all engine enthusiasts, gathers the Brembo main infographics released 2014.

THE 7 BRAKINGS THAT REQUIRE THE MOSTbraking spaceThe braking distance is one of the best indicators of the difficulty of the turn,as it is influenced by external factors such as the grip conditions and the aerodynamic drag that can affect braking performance. Indeed, when all other conditionsare the same, a lower grip and aerodynamicdrag will tend to reduce the transmissionof the brake torque to the ground, increasing the space and the difficulty of braking.

THE 7 BRAKINGS CHARACTERISED BY THE MOST decelerationThe difference between initial velocityand final velocity is another indicator which can be useful in determining the difficultyof braking. This provides an absolute value that indicates the difficulty of the turn,or in other words, shows the number of Km/h by which the vehicle must reduce its velocity by braking, without consider external factors such as grip or aerodynamic drag, whichcan facilitate or hinder the transmissionof the brake torque to the ground, and so affect the braking procedure.

2014

THE 7 BRAKINGS THAT REQUIRE MORE BRAKING TIMEThe braking time is an indicatorof the braking difficulty, which is greatly influenced by exogenous factors such as the grip conditions or downforce. In fact, in the event of similar conditions, less grip and less downforce will tendto reduce the transmissionof the braking torque to the ground, increasing the required braking time.

THE 7 BRAKINGS THAT SUBJECT THE PILOT TO GREATER G FORCEThe g-force on the driver’s body during braking is positively influenced by the grip and the aerodynamic drag. In fact,in a scenario where all other braking conditions are similar, a higher dragand higher grip will help to increasethe g-force on the driver. For this reason turns with a higher g-force can usuallybe found in circuits featuring a mediumto high aerodynamic drag.

The 7 types of braking requiring greater loadon the pedalThe load on the pedal, measured in kilograms, is the force that the pilot must applythe brake pedal and is a good indicator of the difficulty of letting off the throttle although this parameter is influenced by internaland external variables. In equal conditions,in fact, the load applied to the brake pedalis affected by the conditions grip and friction material aggressiveness, factors thatare capable of increasing the braking torque.

01THE BRAKE DISCOne of the most critical components for Formula One braking is the managementof the operating temperatures especially for the brake discs. For this reason the ventilationof Brembo carbon brake discs has undergone constant transformation and evolution, considerably increasing the absolute performance of the braking system.

The increase of the air flow of the Brembo brake discs has also been achieved throughthe CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics, study of fluid dynamics via computer), a synergic study between the air intake, developed by each team for their cars, and the Brembo disc brake. This allowed the design of the ventilation holes to reach extreme characteristics, with a vast increase of holes increasing the carbon surface exposed to the air flowfor better heat dispersion.

During a complete season, Brembo provides each team, consisting of two cars,an average from 140 to 240 brake discs.

The monoblock calipers are a solution once again introduced for the first time by Brembo thanks to its extraordinary capacity for innovation; a new concept of the brake caliperable to revolutionise, over the years, the brake systems of automobiles followed by motorcycles.

During the second half of the 80s, the first monoblock brake caliper was manufactured inside the Brembo workshops, which quickly debuted in Formula 1 racing. Since then, F1 brake calipers have undergone numerous evolutions. Currently, roughly 10 hours of processing are requiredto manufacture an F1 brake caliper. Both the materials and the phases of the process are always 100%, controlled in accordance with the concept of total quality requiredby the application.

During a complete season, Brembo provides each team, consisting of 2 cars,10 sets of calipers.

03THE BRAKE PADSThe friction material used for Brembo pads has gone through significant changes. The actual material used, known as CER, has significantly reduced wear and guaranteed a more effective thermal conductivity. Compared to the previous composite,CER ensures excellent warm-up time, namely speed in reaching the maximum operating temperature for greater efficiency, broad range of use, both in terms of pressureand temperature, and linear brake response. These are all features that allow the driver perfect modulation of the brake system. Incredibly low wear that means constant pedal stiff and performance throw the race. The material used for all Brembo discs is the same for all teams.

During a complete season, Brembo provides each team, consisting of two cars,an average from 280 to 480 pads.

In recent years, engineers have completely changed Brembo brake cooling, whichin Formula One can reach the maximum temperature of 1,000°C, adapting the cooling system, which can now feature up to 1,000 ventilation holes. The ventilation of Brembo carbon brake discs has undergone constant transformation, considerably increasingthe absolute performance of the braking system.

05G-FORCEThe G-forces borne by pilots when braking is positively affected by the grip and downforce. At constant braking performance, in fact, greater load and more grip generate greater G-forces that the pilot must bear. For this reason, letting off throttle with greater G-forceis a condition mainly found in circuits with medium to high downforce.

The carbon-ceramic brake discs are derived directly from the carbon models usedin Formula 1, used exclusively while on track due to relatively high minimum operating temperatures, but can also be used for standard road vehicles due to their effectiveness even when “cold”. This material allows a constant braking force to be maintained even after repeated operation, thanks to the good behaviour of the material at high temperatures. This is why hard carbon ceramic is exceptionally resistant to fading, especially when braking, especially in more challenging conditions, and incredibly light.

THE 7 BRAKINGS THAT REQUIRE THE MOST BRAKING DISTANCEThe braking distance is oneof the indicators that best represents the problems of the cut out, since it is influenced by external factors, such asthe grip conditions, the disconnectionsof the track and the choices madein the use of the friction materials, which can affect the braking performance.

THE 7 BRAKINGS CHARACTERISED BY GREATER DECELERATIONThis indicator shows how demandingthe cut out is in absolute value, thatis to say by how many Km/h the motorcycle must reduce its own speed throughthe braking action without taking other variables into account. In fact, this indicator does not take into account external factors such as the grip or the choice of friction materials which can facilitate or hinderthe transmission to ground of the braking torque and as a result affect braking.

2014

THE 7 BRAKINGS WHICH REQUIRE GREATER PRESSURE ON THE LEVERThe pressure on the lever, measured in kg,is the force that the driver has to applyto the lever to brake and is a good indicator of the difficulty of the cut off even though this parameter is influenced by internaland external variables. In fact, on a partwith other conditions, the pressure appliedto the brake lever is influenced by the gripping conditions and the aggressivenessof the friction material, factors capableof increasing the braking torque.

THE 7 BRAKINGS THAT SUBJECT THE DRIVER TO GREATER G FORCEThe G unit of measurement (knowas G-Force) is used to express the acceleration (or deceleration) to which the vehiclesand any passengers are subjected. In motorcycle competitions, the maximum G-Force applicable while braking determines a physical limitation of the motorcycle, since once a certain threshold of G-Force appliedis surpassed there is an excessive loadon the front of the motorcycle whichcan even lead to overturning.

THE 7 BRAKINGS ACTIONS CHARACTERIZED BY GREATER INITIAL SPEEDThe initial speed is the speed at whichthe driver begins to brake. This parameter, even though it is only a partial indicator of the difficulty in braking, is however interesting since the speed at which the motorcycleis launched constitutes a rather critical element for the driver who must interpret with greater attention and talent the cutout the higher the speed.

01THE BRAKE DISCCarbon discs allow a considerable decrease in weight on unsprung masses, significantly reduce the gyroscopic effect improving bike handling and provide performance far superior to those offered by steel counterparts. However, they have a flaw: they are unable to brake effectively until they reach the correct operating temperature; which is why the pilots use the warm-up lap and the first bends after the start to bring the discs at the right temperature. To this date, in Moto GP, in case of rain, meaning that weather conditionsdo not allow the correct temperature range of operation to be achieved, the brake discs used are still made of steel. Even with low temperatures, however, but in the absenceof water, carbon discs still remain the solution of choice, perhaps with standard band(see below), with any needed use of protective covers produced by the teams to raiseand maintain their operating temperature even when not braking.

Since its debut in the world of motorcycle racing in the early 70s to the present day, Brembo used four different types of material to produce brake discs.

From plasma coated aluminium discs used in the course of 80 years to reducethe weight in the 125 and 250 classes to the floating discs with disc carrier in cast aluminium and disc rotor in cast iron screwed on the disc carrier up to the floating discs with aluminium disc carrier and stainless steel disc rotor. In early 90s, a new materialwith revolutionary features made its appearance. This is carbon and it was then usedto manufacture the discs of premier class bikes, the first for the 500 classand then for MotoGP and briefly for the 250 class.

03THE DISC TYPEDuring the last season of 2014 the Regulation on measures of front disc brakes madeof carbon in the MotoGP class was amended. Up to now, the rules allowed two formats of front discs: 320mm, used in almost all tracks and 340mm, mandatory for Motegiand optional for Barcelona and Sepang. This modification allows 340mm discs to be used on tracks (where the use of 320 is still allowed), while remaining mandatory for Motegi.

The Brembo 4 piston monoblock calipers for the Moto GP are drawn from a single block of aluminium-lithium material. The shape of the caliper body is designed in orderto optimise the mass/stiffness relationship whilst the surface is nickel plated. One of the most obvious differences compared to the calipers fitted to road bikesis the presence of “quick couplings” for purging and feeding that allow for rapid caliper replacement or bleeding between test sessions or during the same session.

05THE BRAKE PADSThe main characteristics of the Brembo carbon brake pads used in MotoGP championship racing are high friction and constant efficiency, especiallywith high disc temperatures, but still falling within the correct range of use. These characteristics guarantee an excellent and uniform braking for the duration of the competition, making it less likely for fading to occur. Above the maximum temperatures, the friction coefficient for carbon may change, triggering the fading effect with consequent decay of braking performance and sudden increase in wear of carbon disc and pads.

06BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND LEVERThe history of the radial brake master cylinder begins in 1985 when the first Brembo registeredthe first patent idea that was destined to revolutionise brake systems.

The idea was initially adopted in the Racing, where issues of limited space on race bikes require adamant research for more compact solutions. The new solution, in addition to reducingthe overall dimensions, was able to improve the ergonomics of the driver, making lever actuation more effective. This structural arrangement, among other benefits, also allowed designingof the brake master cylinder with the aim of optimising the hydraulic and mechanical interactions, in order to improve the performance of the product. In 1986, the radial brake master cylinder already took to the track, on board the Yamaha YZR OW 81 of the American Lawson who, that year, won the 500 class championship. The American pilot immediately appreciated the high linearity of response: this convinced Brembo to further develop the idea, introducing new sealsand enhancing the enhancing the adjusting device of the lever distance from the handlebar.
