The Harvard African Students' Association (HASA), founded in 1977, is an orga-
nization committed to nourishing cultural, intellectual, political and economic
awareness about the African continent. HASA is dedicated to building com-
munity and promoting collaboration amongst African students at Harvard, en-
couraging awareness of Africa within the Harvard community and the greater
Boston area, and ultimately contributing back our continent.
Our Mission

3/8HASA 2008-2009
We are the Harvard community for students from Africa, con-
nected to Africa, or interested in matters concerning Africa.
Anyone who is intrigued by lively debates, art shows, cultural
shows, music, and African cuisine will find a welcoming home
at HASA. HASA is composed of nearly 100 active members
and caters to the Harvard African community of over 200
students. On Wednesdays we hold HASA general meetings in
which we discuss topics including oil, religion, politics, art, and
modern culture. Some meetings feature honorable guests in-
cluding ambassadors, NGO leaders, and political figures. Other
meetings are simply discussions among students about the
issues that affect Africans locally and globally.
Who We Are
We Are
Aware of the important and positive contributions Afri-
can students inside and outside the African continent have
played in the past towards the development of Africa.
Convincedthat Pan-Africanism and African Solidarity based
upon egalitarian principles is essential for the genuine politi-
cal, social, and economic progress in Africa.
Committed to initiating programs of special interest to
students concerned with Africa, and contributing to the
development and liberation of the African continent and Af-
rican mind.
Resolved to mobilize African students at Harvard and to
inform the non-African members of Harvard University and
the American public of important events occurring in Africa,
with a view to articulating a progressive African position
and generating informed support for African development.

In addition to our bi-monthly general meetings,
HASA holds events which are well-attended
by the general Harvard community. These in-
clude the annual Potluck, Africa Week, Fresh-
man Event, Senior Luncheon, Summer in Africa
Program, and special events like the African
Hip-Hop Conference. While HASA has always
sought to be active in Africa, the membership
has recently voiced the desire for increased
social responsibility on the continent. Thus, the
Executive Board has decided to host a new
event, titled Dinner for Water, as well as a Si-
erra Leone Pen-pal program.
What We Do

Dinner for Water
Dinner for Water is a new HASA fundraiser geared towards increasing awareness about issues that
span the African continent, especially the lack of clean water in African villages. The event is open
to the entire Harvard community, with special invitations to professors in the African Studies De-
partment. Dinner for Water will feature a renowned keynote speaker. All proceeds from this event
will go to H20 Africa and Ryans Well Foundation, who work to bring clean water to schoolchildren
in Africa. The event is scheduled for November 8, 2008 at the Sheraton Commander Hotel. The
projected cost of Dinner for Water is $12,000.
Africa Week
Africa Week is a weeklong series of events addressing ways that students can take part in tackling
the difficulties faced by Africans and serves as a venue for interested college students to simply
get involved in whatever capacity. Africa Week is a practical, student-oriented presentation of Af-
rican issues and culture. The week ends with the African Cultural Show, a lively display of student
and community talent in the areas of African music, dance, fashion, theater, and cuisine. This year,
30% of proceeds will go the Fistula Foundation. The projected cost of Africa Week is $17,500.

Short-Term Initiatives

6/8HASA 2008-2009
EndowmentHASA would like to establish a $50000 endowment with Harvard Corpora-
tion so that the organization can look forward to an annual interest that will
serve as the operating budget for each academic year. It would also pro-
vide HASA with a lasting presence on Harvard campus. By helping to ensure
HASAs long term viability, sponsors will benefit from having an undergradu-
ate partner and vehicle to publicize the work of the firm as well as generate
valuable interest.
Scholarship
HASA would like to establish a $1000 bi-annual scholarship awarded to a
member of HASA who demonstrates life passions and career goals most
in-line with HASAs visions for African advancement. The money would be
expected to cover the semesters costs for books.
Travel Stipend
HASA would like to establish a $3000 annual travel stipend awarded to two
members of HASA who are looking to conduct research, thesis or otherwise,
on the African continent. The students work must show a commitment to
the advancement of the African society politically and/or economically.

HASA aims to extol the cultural vibrancy and
opportunity within Africa to students on Har-
vard campus this year. In light of our mission and
the stark financial realities we face, a partnership
between HASA and your company is a natural
development. By supporting HASA, your com-
pany can spark interest and good faith from in-
telligent young minds.
