Haskins Community Church News August 2020 Star Words Update Last Epiphany, which we celebrated on Sunday, January 5, 2020, I began what I hope will be a new yearly tradition at HCC – the selection of a Star Word. I almost said, the choosing of a Star Word”, except that we dont choose them. They choose us. That morning we prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide each of us in receiving a word upon which we could focus that would bring us closer to God and to our true selves. And then we bravely reached into the basket, and received our gift – our Star Word for 2020. Within a few weeks, I was receiving emails and phone calls, from church members sharing experiences in which the added awareness brought forth by the word gave new meaning to their daily experiences and spirituality. So here we are, nearly 7 months later, and for most of us, in a very different place than we were in January. So the questions beginhave you thought about your star word? Did you meditate on it for a few weeks, but then put the star literally and figuratively out of sight? Or perhaps you are clinging to the lessons learned through your Star Word, and continue to see the Holy Spirit using this new awareness in your life? My Star Word was Service.I have to admit, I was hoping for a much better word. Maybe something like Compassion, or Creativity, or Celebration. But I got Service”. I was puzzled. Did God want me to serve people more? Or take more time for selfcare and serve less? But then COVID-19 hit, and suddenly the old paradigms of service were all thrown out the window. I have had to re-evaluate and rethink what service truly is, and how I can best respond to the evolving needs of our congregation, community and world. I taped my Star Word of Serviceon my inbox in the church office, so every time I pick up my mail, it reminds me that no matter what circumstance I find myself in, the Spirit will direct me into service in new and creative ways. Star Words Update

Last Epiphany, which we celebrated on Sunday, January 5, 2020, I began what I hope will be a new yearly tradition at HCC – the selection of a Star Word. I almost said, “the choosing of a Star Word”, except that we don’t choose them.

So the questions begin… have you thought about your star word? Did you meditate on it for a few weeks, but then put the star literally and figuratively out of sight? Or perhaps you are clinging to the lessons learned through your Star Word, and continue to see the Holy Spirit using this new awareness in your life? My Star Word was “Service.” I have to admit, I was hoping for a much better word. Maybe something like Compassion, or Creativity, or Celebration. But I got “Service”. I taped my Star Word of “Service” on my inbox in the church office, so every time I pick up my mail, it reminds me that no matter what circumstance I find myself in, the Spirit will direct me into service in new and creative ways.

Pastor Letter Continued….

I know that many of you have stories to share about your experiences with your Star Word. Might you be willing to share those with me and others? You could 1. Type up your experiences and email to me before the end of August or 2. Share them in person during worship on Sunday, August 30th, or both! If you haven’t thought about your Star Word in awhile, this gives you the entire month to see where it takes you. And if you have not yet received a Star Word, I will bring them to worship every Sunday in August so you may receive one, or I can prayerfully and confidentially send you a Star Word in the mail. In the meantime, I would like to offer this prayer that you can pray:

God, I acknowledge that I am not always ready to receive your best gifts. You have given me an epiphany word in order that my searching will bring me to you. It is often my habit to turn aside, stumble over, or even reject experiences and encounters that I lat-er understand to have been precious gifts. Help me to be open to the gift that you offer now through my Star Word. I acknowledge that I do not fully understand what this word might mean for my faith, but I receive it from you with gratitude and pray that your Spirit will enable me to live into my word with intention and faithfulness. Amen.

Worship Schedule August 2020

August 2

Worship: 9th Sunday After Pentecost / Communion

Scriptures: Isaiah 55: 1-5; Psalm 145: 8-9; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21 Sermon: Walking By Faith Sermon Series: “The Crisis of a Woman” At times we feel as if faith is all we have when dealing with the struggles of life. Fortunately, when faith is all we have, we can discover all we need. When it appears our situation is beyond any hope of being re-solved, the Lord is able.

August 9

Worship: 10th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: 1 Kings 19:9-18; Psalm 85:8-13;

Romans 10: 5-15; Matthew 14: 22-23 Sermon: Walking By Faith Sermon Series “The Conversation of Paul” Paul’s encounter with the Lord brought about a radical transfor-mation in his life. He began a walk of faith with the Lord that offered hope and assurance of eternal life. Of all the walks one takes with the Lord by faith, salvation is by far the best.

August 16

Worship: 11th Sunday After Pentecost/ Blessing of the Backpacks

Scriptures: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8; Psalm 67; Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32; Matthew 15: 21-28 Sermon: “Watch Your Mouth” In Matthew 15: 11 Jesus tells us, “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.” I’m guessing that the phrase, “Watch your mouth!” was directed at most of us at one point or another by a parent or teacher. Usually we receive this admonition after we use a curse word, or gossip or say something hateful or derogatory. Jesus tells us that what comes from our mouth indicates the condition of our hearts.

August 23

Worship: 12th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Isaiah 51:1-6; Psalm 138;

Romans 12:1-8; Matthew 16:13-20 Sermon: “Let Anyone Who Has Ears LISTEN!” I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage- God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth because it’s twice as important to listen than it is to speak. Do we follow this sage advice? Are we truly listening to each other, even as ideologies, COVID-19, politics, and so much more divide us? How do we put aside our preconceptions and dogmas, and really LISTEN to each other?

August 30

Worship: 13th Sunday after Pentecost/ Sharing Of Star Word Lessons

Scriptures: Jeremiah 15:15-21; Psalm 26:1-8; Romans 12:9-21; Matthew 16:21-28 Sermon: “Overcoming Evil With Good” Romans 12: 9-21 is filled with not just good advice, but pertinent, im-perative directives from the Apostle Paul, which echoes the words of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Verse 21 tells us, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” What evil do we see in the world today, and how can we combat it, not with more hated, but with love?
