In the fall of 2013, Bonnie Rhoby, owner of Rhoby Designs in Middleville, home of Piecefull Valley Quilters, challenged members of the group tocreate art quilts to enter in the American Quilter’s Society 2014 show, which
will be in DeVos Place, Wednesday, Aug. 20 through Saturday, Aug. 23. Elevenquilters — Loriane Facca, Dorothy Janose (not pictured) and (center inset, fromleft) Judy Jackiewicz, Marie Nicholas, Kathy Medland, Brenda Bremer, KathyDunn, Carrie Dunn, Bonnie Rhoby, Mary DeVries, Karen McClurkin and BettyBourn — accepted the challenge and created a series of nine wall quiltsdepicting a bicycle tour of Michigan’s historic Mackinac Island. While many ofthe quilters had never made art quilts before, they rose to Rhoby’s challengeand earned a place in the semi-finals of the wall quilt machine-quilted divisionof the AQS show. And their work also has been entered in ArtPrize, whichwill be Sept. 22 through Oct. 12. To learn more about these women andtheir creations, look inside this edition of The Reminder.
