1. The City of Hastings did a proper job ringing in 2015. We should allbe thanking everyone involved in the production of the annual New Year'sEve Ball Drop. While there was some worry about the weather holdingback the crowd, the event turned out to be the best yet. All ages weredrown to the party and all were reported to have had a very good time.Special recognition to the Thornapple Jazz Orchestra, the City of HastingsDDA, Jon Anderson, Dave McIntyre, Mayor Frank Campbell, CarlSchoessel, the Walldorff Brew Pub and everyone else who helped put onthe party. Great job to all! Congratulations to the now Dan and TammyHause for getting married in the middle of it all. Seems like tying the knotin the heart of Downtown Hastings on South Jefferson Street was theright thing to do. And to those of you who participated in the 5K walk orrun...Wow! Interesting way to end the party and a great way to start thenew year.2. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute has a full month to keep us all busythrough January. From now until the end of February, Colin Alexander, aKalamazoo artist who is known for his depictions of landscape andwildlife in his paintings, will have an exhibit on display. He started paint-ing when he was a child and was encouraged by his parents and has nowreceived several honors for his accomplishments. His exhibit is free andopen to the public Monday through Friday from 9a.m to 5p.m. 3. Make plans now to attend the Winter Festival and January Brunch onSunday January 11, also at the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute. Enjoy a vari-ety of free, winter-related activities all day. There is free sledding on thenew sledding hill, art activities, s'mores and hot cocoa, ski and snowshoerental, folk storytelling and a free guided snowshoe hike (surely we willhave snow by then since this is Michigan!). It all starts at 10a.m. andwraps up at 4p.m. The Brunch has 2 settings with the first at 11:30a.m.and the second at 1p.m. The cost for Brunch is $14 for adults and $7 forchildren for members and $16 for adults and $8 for children who arenon-members. Reservations are required so you will want to call 269-721-4190 or visit cedarcreekinstitute.org. If you are thinking you wouldrather have some alone time with nature, you can rent snowshoes andtake a quiet walk in the woods or simply sit by the warmth of the fireplaceand read a book enjoying a cup of hot cocoa. Sounds like a great winterday for just about anyone.4. If you are looking for an indoor activity for this time of year, this oneis interesting and educational. If you have wanted to see what is underthe hoods of some of America's favorite automobiles, now is the time fora visit to the Gilmore Car Museum. They are offering a program “Underthe Hood” throughout the Gilmore Automotive Heritage Center and con-necting galleries. It is free with general admission. Visit www.gilmore-carmuseum.org for more information.5. If you got a new flag for Christmas and are ready to dispose of the oldone there is someone available to take care of that for you. You will findEvan Smelker and a flag receptacle on the second floor of the HastingsCity Hall and he will take care of it properly courtesy of the AmericanLegion. When you bring your flag in, it should be folded in the classictriangle shape if possible. There's nothing like an American Flag wavingin the wind.6. Hastings Public Library is open and ready to help you find a good bookto curl up with on a cold winter night. They are also available to help getyour children excited about books. Baby Time is at 9a.m., and ToddlerTime is 10a.m. on Tuesdays. Also on Tuesdays at 6p.m., you can playchess and checkers. Preschool Time is on Fridays at 10:30. The Libraryhas many events each week so check out their website at www.hast-ingspubliclibrary.org or call 269-945-4263.7. Watch the Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at7p.m. on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system.Enjoy these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's.See Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, BulldogDrummond, the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice.8. January is Radon Action Month. There are test kits available for freeto residents of Barry or Eaton County during January. They are availableat many sites in the two counties and you can call 517-543-2580 to findout where to get one. In Hastings, they are available at the HealthDepartment at 330 W. Woodlawn Avenue. This is one of those things thatcan get overlooked, but is quite important, because it can happen to you.9. I guess it's really getting time. The City of Hastings residents are freeto drop off their Christmas Trees at the drop off area behind the CityMaintenance Garage in Downtown Hastings. This area can be used atany time and it is for “compostable material only”. No plastic so makesure you get Charlie Brown and your Barbie off your tree first. 10. You can pick up your copy of The Farmers Almanac for 2015 at TheGeneral Store. They are hot off the press having just arrived and free toeveryone. A new line of cards for us, Pictura, just went up on the walltoday, and we received a shipment of scarfs in many colors and styles. Ifyou need a new hat and want to look like a knight in shining armor, wehave the hat for you. I suppose they really aren't shiny, but they are thickand warm do look like a knight's helmet complete with bevor. Since thecold weather has arrived once again, they just might come inhandy...especially that bevor. All of our Christmas merchandise contin-ues to be 50% and 75% off this week. We still have some ornaments,wrapping paper, candy, and other Christmas merchandise. 11. Hastings: What you always wanted your hometown to be.
