Ball Rolling For Men’s Tennis

Physically-speaking, Graham Ball isn’t the first person you notice on the Stetson men’s tennis team . He stands about 6 feet tall, weighs approximately 160 pounds, and outwardly looks just like a regular college student . The Canadian native of Montreal suburb Baie-D’Urfe could get lost in a crowd and shuffle on by like one of the masses . But put him on a tennis court and Ball most definitely stands out. As a freshman last spring, Ball earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun Conference all-freshman team and was also named second-team all-conference after posting a 14-4 record in singles play . While last season was a nice start to his Stetson career, this year could be even better . Ball recently opened Stetson’s fall season by capturing the singles title at the Bedford Cup, an annual tournament featuring every men’s NCAA Division I team in the state of Florida . Ball was a perfect 4-0 in Jacksonville, dropping just one set along the way .

“I felt good about being able to maintain solid performances throughout the tournament and not letting my opponents get back into the match after the first set,” said Ball . This was a new experience for Ball . He joined the Hatters last January and missed out on the fall tournament season, a portion of the schedule that is more aimed toward individual play than the team-results-oriented spring schedule . “It was very much different for me,” he said . “The fall is still geared toward the team, I find, even though it’s really an individual part of the year . We are still a team, and we always stick together and we try and support each other as much as possible, but we try to make sure that we are a bit more to ourselves and focus on what we need to do to get through our matches.” Included in the new experience were some nervous moments for Ball, especially when he reached the finals, where he

ultimately defeated North Florida’s Zach Goldberg 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 . “I was playing a guy from UNF at UNF, and I had to control my nerves a bit more, relax and get my feet moving more,” he said . “Because of a change in the scoring format I had to take my chances a lot more on the more important points, and it paid off . He was a bit more aggressive, and that worked to my favor.” Also working in Ball’s favor is the fact that he’s left-handed, one of three lefties on the Hatters this year . “It played a huge part in the final,” said Ball . “My opponent had a one-hand backhand, so I adjusted my serve to slice more to his backhand . That helped me a lot.” Ball was lightly recruited out of Canada . He came to Stetson’s attention when women’s player Eveline Lepinay, a fellow Quebecer, advised the coaching staff about a video she had seen of Ball .

“Graham was an under-the-radar player in Canada,” said associate head coach Christophe Noblet . “He is a late bloomer . We are very fortunate to have him . If he was playing at this level when we recruited him, we wouldn’t have gotten him.” The tournament win is a perfect way for Ball, and the Hatters, to start the year . “It gives me a lot of confidence and hopefully gives the team some confidence as well,” Ball said. “The more we train and the more we get closer as a team, we’ll do great things in both the fall and the spring.” Ball has simple goals for himself and the Hatters as they move through the fall and into the spring season . “I just want to be a part of a team that wins conference,” he said. “I want to contribute the most I can to the team . I want to be able to say I played for Stetson and we got a ring at the end of the season.”

Tough Schedule Awaits Women’s Hoops

A minimum of 12 home games, plus away contests against Marist, Florida and Baylor, highlight the 2014-15 Stetson University women’s basketball schedule . Stetson’s challenging schedule features seven of the first nine games on the road, including five games against teams that participated in last year’s postseason . “It is the hardest schedule ever, it really is,” Hatters head coach Lynn Bria said. “I know I have said that in the past, but this is really hard . We have a lot of away games, which is pretty typical of our schedules each year.” Following the home opener vs . Bethune-Cookman on Nov . 14, the Hatters will play six consecutive games on the road, beginning with contests at UCF (Nov . 19) and Indiana State (Nov . 22) . From Nov . 28 through 30, the Hatters will participate in the BTI Classic in Waco, Texas . Stetson will face MAAC Champion Marist to open the tournament before meeting a Baylor team that won 32 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight . The Hatters’ road trip concludes at USF on Dec . 3 .

Stetson returns to the Edmunds Center on Dec . 5 to face Webber International in the annual Volusia County Schoolchildren Day . Stetson will be back on the road to face the University of Florida on Dec . 14 . The Hatters will welcome Campbell and Texas State to the Edmunds Center on Dec . 19-20 as part of the 27th annual Hatter Classic . A New Years Eve game vs . UNC Wilmington caps the homestand . Nonconference play concludes on Jan . 3 at Valparaiso . Stetson will then navigate its 14-game, double round-robin Atlantic Sun Conference schedule . The Hatters won a school record with 16 conference games last year . 30 Regular-Season Games for Men’s Hoops

Fourteen home games and road contests against Florida State, UCF, New Mexico State and Wyoming highlight Stetson’s 2014-15 men’s basketball schedule . The Hatters will also face in-state rivals such as Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman, in addition to a full slate of Atlantic Sun Conference opponents as head coach Corey Williams embarks on his second season at Stetson . “Our schedule is good for where we are as a program,” said Williams. “We have some games where we’ll have to play really well to have a chance to win, but we also have some teams a bit more in our wheelhouse . For us, it’s a very competitive schedule.” With such a young team, Williams wanted to make sure the Hatters had plenty of time at home in the early going . Unlike last year when Stetson played its first eight games on the road and didn’t host a home game until Nov . 30, the Hatters will play three of their first four games at the Edmunds Center .

Thanksgiving week finds the Hatters on their only lengthy road swing of the year, when Stetson is scheduled to participate in the Wyoming Classic, a four-team, three-venue tournament . The Hatters will face New Mexico State (Nov . 24) and Wyoming (Nov . 26), before heading to Greeley, Colorado, for games against Northern Colorado (Nov . 28) and Florida A&M (Nov . 29) . On Dec . 22, the Hatters pay a visit to Tallahassee for a clash with Florida State . The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Williams, who spent six seasons with the Seminoles prior to becoming Stetson’s head coach . “I’m looking forward to going back,” said Williams . “I was there for six years and enjoyed my time in Tallahassee . That will be a special moment for me.” The Atlantic Sun Tournament is scheduled for March 3, 5 and 8 . Busy Fall Schedule For Golf Teams

Both the Stetson men’s and women’s golf teams got busy fall schedules started the first weekend of September at the Golfweek Program Challenge in South Carolina . That event, which is the only one this year in which both teams will compete, started a hectic eight-week stretch during which both teams will compete in multiple events . In fact, the men’s team will play in five more events over a 38-day stretch starting Sept . 28 in Louisville, Kentucky, and concluding Nov . 4 in the Stetson Invitational at Victoria Hills . In between will be another trip to Kentucky and two tournaments here in Florida . The women’s team, which features an entirely freshman and sophomore roster, will play in just four fall events before cranking things back up in the spring . The Golfweek event to open the year provided the Stetson men with plenty of room for optimism about the direction the team is going in its second year under coach Larry Watson . The Hatters finished in ninth place in the 12-team tournament, but that does not tell

the story. Stetson’s final score of 857 for the events, which was 7-under-par, was a whopping 58 shots better than the team scored in the same event on the same course last year . It was also the best three-round score for the Stetson program in 38 events, going back to the 2010-11 season . The women’s team didn’t quite have the same level of success as the men, but coach Floyd Kerr did give three of his freshmen a chance to get their first taste of collegiate competition . Newcomers Carolin Schart, Eilidh Watson and Paige Kemp had their ups and downs in that first event, but Kerr said he was encouraged by the way they played . “That is just the way these freshmen are going to be,” Kerr said. “I expect them to be somewhat up and down and inconsistent . The thing they want is to get that consistency.” With no home event this year, the closest the Hatters will play to home is at the Xavier Invitational at LPGA International in Daytona Oct . 9-12 .

Davion Belk Overcoming Adversity

Growing up on the west side of Chicago, Stetson defensive lineman Davion Belk saw much of the bad that life can dish out . Belk, who has gotten off to a fast start this season, earning the Hatters’ Defensive Player of the Week honors twice in the first three games, comes from a large family that, despite his parents’ best efforts, suffered multiple tragedies . During Belk’s sophomore year at Whitney M . Young High School, he lost both a sister and a brother to gun violence . The separate incidents occurred just six weeks apart . His sister Claudette Sauls was killed by her fiance in a murder-suicide, and his brother David Sauls Jr . as caught up in gang violence . “It was very tough to deal with, especially considering how close they were together,” Belk said. “He was my half brother, and he didn’t grow up in the same house that I did, but he was around a lot . My dad and mom both tried to keep him out of harm’s way and do good things for him, but he made some bad decisions.” Belk credits his parents, David Sauls and Vivian Belk, for making sure that he

and his other four siblings didn’t meet the same fate as his older siblings . “Growing up, it was hard to understand why we couldn’t go off our block or why we couldn’t do the things some of the other kids were doing,” Belk said. “There are some people that I went to school with, that I would see every day, who were shot and killed.” Hatters coach Roger Hughes said it is obvious that Belk did not allow the tragedies of his life to negatively affect the kind of person he has become . “You see some young men and women in situations like that become very bitter about life,” Hughes said. “He is just the opposite . He is doing everything he can to help other people, and that is one of the reasons why he was chosen as one of our first captains.” Belk was able to turn away from the trouble in his neighborhood by focusing his time and effort on his other favorite sport – tennis . Yes, the fearsome Hatters defensive lineman was a standout tennis player in high school and, in fact, started playing the

sport in the fourth grade . He served as the team captain for three years in high school and, as a senior, captured a city title . “I think I have really quick feet, and that is something I developed and used on the court, and it is something that I surprised a lot of people with,” Belk said. “Back in high school, when I was 280 pounds, people didn’t think I could move or play, but then I was all over the court.” While he hasn’t yet received a call from Stetson tennis coach Pierre Pilote, Belk has been known to hit the court since he arrived in DeLand . “I have had a chance to play against Eveline Lepinay, who is a good friend,” Belk said of the junior from Quebec . “We played to four, and I got one game, which was pretty good since I had not played in two years. I miss it. It is a fun sport.” The quick feet that make for good play on the court are an attribute that Belk uses to his advantage on the football field. Even though he is often much lighter than the offensive linemen he opposes, it is his quickness that he relies on to get into the backfield and disrupt plays.

Hughes said Belk’s success this year is a product of the hard work he put in during the summer . Back home in Chicago, Belk worked a full-time job as an engineer’s assistant at RML Specialty Hospital during the day, spending hours each day painting before spending his afternoons lifting and running . “I think that is a function of his hard work in the offseason,” Hughes said. “In this sport, a lot of the success that you have is prepaid . He did all of the prepayment this summer when he did the work, so he came in much stronger and much bigger and much quicker than he was.” Through three games, Belk had recorded 21 tackles and five quarterback hurries, but he is more interested in the end result than individual achievement . “I take pride and I am happy that my coaches have acknowledged that I am working hard,” Belk said. “I just want to keep playing well on Saturdays . If that means getting known more, that is fine. It is a team game, and as long as the team plays well, I don’t care who gets the recognition. I just want the W.”

Tip of the Hat - Turning The Towns Teal

The traditional rich green color of the Stetson University Palm Court turned a shade of teal as members of the Stetson women’s basketball team hung teal ribbons in recognition of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month . The team members also passed out fact cards about ovarian cancer and its symptoms as part of the national “Turn the Towns Teal” campaign that originated seven years ago in New Jersey . “It feels good to help raise awareness about a disease that most women might not know about,” sophomore Amber Porter said . The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, a disease that is often difficult to diagnose, making early detection a critical component of successful treatment . Associate Professor of Sports Business Dr . Matt Wilson helped bring the campaign to the Stetson campus after seeing the success of the program in his hometown of Bristol, Conn . “I just think that it is a very valid cause,” Wilson said . “Ovarian cancer is known as

a silent disease . If we can just help one person today as we pass out our fact cards, then we have served our purpose . Whether it is a person directly on our campus, or a family member, it is a great cause as long as we can bring awareness . That is our No. 1 goal.” The Hatters were out in full force, hanging the teal bows on the palm trees surrounding the Holler Fountain and passing out information cards to students who were passing through on the way to class . “Part of our values here at Stetson are to show our students the importance of giving back and serving in the community,” Wilson said . “We know that sport has a great avenue to promote change and awareness . 5 Questions With ... Brad Lokey

Hatters Extra: What are some of your game-day responsibilities?Brad Lokey: As the strength coach, my primary game-day responsibilities are to be “get back” coach for the sideline. I basically walk the sideline and remind the players and coaches to get back behind the area where the referees work . Also, I am in the locker room pregame to help in manual stretching .

What are some of the great features of the strength room at the Athletic Training Center?The greatest feature of our facilities is the ATHLETES . Second to that is the audiovisual ability of our facility . I like the visual feedback that I am able to give an athlete if they are not grasping the verbal or demonstrated cues . We have an iPad on the floor that controls our five 70-inch monitors, and we can record a player’s movement to show them what is correct or incorrect . We also put the workouts on the monitors while reiterating them with individual workout sheets that have the actual weights for an athlete .

How did you first get interested in coaching strength and conditioning?As a three-sport high-school and two-sport collegiate athlete, I always excelled in the weight room . I think I enjoyed the training more than the sports I competed in . Also, in the Marines, I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to lift and become the captain on the Marine Corps team (Japan) . I enjoyed traveling and seeing different countries’ philosophies and techniques for training and getting to compete in foreign countries while representing the USA and the Marine Corps . Training became a passion and a way that I felt I could help others be more successful than myself . You can learn more about a person in two weeks in the weight room than a year out of it . Are they going to work? Are they intrinsically or extrinsically motivated? In my opinion, the weight room is a great revealer of character .

How did your time in the Marine Corps influence you as a coach?The biggest thing that the Marine Corps instilled in me was a no-quit attitude . No matter what goes on in my life, or in my career, I have attempted to have the ability to adapt, improvise and overcome . Perseverant is the key adjective to define me .

How are the strength programs for the various Hatter teams similar or different?At the base of all training, there are staples . We incorporate those staples with sport-similar auxiliary exercises to achieve our primary directive of maximal athletic performance .

What is the Pink Army?Breast cancer is the second most common cancer found in women, but through awareness, education and the advanced treatment programs at Florida Hospitals, it can be defeated. The fight has been long and difficult, yet because of our efforts, cancer deaths have begun to drop at all stages of the disease. We have invested in specialized training, and armed our teams with the latest technology through a program we call “Pink Army.”

The Florida Hospital Pink Army is an initiative to create greater awareness about breast disease and the importance of annual screening mammograms by engaging the community and having a little fun! Members who join the Florida Hospital Pink Army will become soldiers and receive a Pink Army number and dog tag. From there, they will be able to move up the ranks by completing various missions to educate the community.

Soldiers can move up the ranks and earn free rewards by performing different missions, such as enlisting additional soldiers, volunteering, attending events and hosting Pink Parties. These parties are small gatherings hosted by soldiers that informally and intimately educate women on the importance of early detection when fighting breast cancer.
