    to the Netherlands...

WHAT AM I SUPPOSEDTO DO WITH THIS?

In 1550 a sultan gave a few tulip bulbs toa very important man from Austria. That

man gave them to a Dutch professor.

    3. The name of this professor was:Carolus ClusiusClemens CarolusCarel Clemens

The professor took the bulbs andbrought them back to the Netherlands. He was crazy about the bulbs. He madenice drawings and did lile experimentswith the tulips. But he refused to sharethem with anybody else. He kept thebulbs all for himself.

    Crazy about tulips!

    6

Back in those days, tulips were extremely rare and very

expensive! Only the super rich people could aord to buy

tulip bulbs. But those people did not plant them in their garden

or put them in a lovely vase in their homes. They bought the bulbs

just to sell them again for prot. That way the tulip bulbs became

    more and more expensive.

Strangely enough, the people that bought the bulb didn’t actually

get to see one. They received a piece of paper that stated that

they were the owners of a tulip bulb. One day it all went com-

pletely wrong and suddenly the bulbs lost their value. Many, many

    people lost their money.

In those years, people were absolutely crazy about tulips. Not

because they are such beauful owers, but because

they were worth so much. They could smell the tulip

    money.

Fill in the leers that remain. Then you’ll

know what this period in history is called.

These pictures show you how tulips are grown.

Oh no! The pictures are all the wrong order.

Can you put them in the right order?

Growing a new tulip goes like this: A grower (culvator) crosses theseeds of two dierent tulips. For example a pink and an orange one.

He then culvates bulbs from the seeds. Aer five years, these bulbs

start to flower. Only then, will the grower know if he has succeeded in

creang a new tulip species with all the good qualies of the pink and

orange tulip. Creang a new tulip is an intricate job and can take up to

    25 years to perfect!

Have you ever seena black tulip?

Guess what happens if you put

a white tulip into a glass with

    ink or food colouring?

The tulip will drink all thecolours and the leaves will show

    coloured stripes.

         6

No? Well, that’s right! Black tulips don’t exist. However, there are dark

purple tulips that look like they’re

almost black. Which colours will you

need to create such a dark purple tulip?

A mosaic is a picture that is made out of a lot of small parts.Pieces of le for example. Or… Flower bulbs! This year the theme

is The Golden Age: an era in which Dutch merchants earned a lot

of money. They sailed their ships over the world’s oceans and

returned with merchandise they could sell for a large prot. With

the money they earned they built beauful canal houses.

What is what? A tulip bulb is prey special. When you cut it through the middle, you

can see the remains of the blossomed tulip and the beginnings of a

new tulip. It’s fun to try at home! What are all parts of the bulb called?
