Administrator’s Message
Wow, where did that time go. It certainly flew by, but boy what fun we had. Looking over the year we had
great community events, starting with our Meet the Teacher BBQ, followed by our awesome Christmas
dance and who could forget the fabulous Multi-cultural Day and the awesome drumming residency.
Now in the month of June we need to celebrate our “Dads”. They are our first supporters and constant
guardians. They love us unconditionally like our Father in Heaven. They are the blessed men who cheer
us up when we are feeling low, take us out biking, and fill our hearts with so much joy. Make sure that you
thank your Dad for all that he does for you and give him a wonderful Father’s Day.
As we end the year, we need to thank our Lord in heaven for leading us through our days here at school;
for blessing us with wonderful relationships within our school community and the awesome learning that
took place. As we now enter into summer holidays, let us pray;
Summer Vacation Prayer
No more homework, no more tests.
No more getting up for school.
No more book reports or studying.
My summer vacation begins today!
I'm so happy and I'm so free.
I want to read and get up late.
I want to ride my bike and swim.
I want to play more with my friends.
Please bless my summer days, dear God.
Keep me safe and happy.

2016 ST. PIUS X FILM FESTIVAL
On Star Wars Day (May 4), St. Pius X held its first annual Film Fest!
Since January, Mrs. McCormack, Mr. Roffey, Miss Cerminara, and Miss Adomako-Ansah,
along with 14 students between grades 3-6, spent Monday and Wednesday after school
learning all about creating, editing, filters, and genres, all through the use of iMovie. The
students were tasked with creating their own short film between three and five
minutes. There were two documentaries, a ‘how-to’ movie, a comedy, a sequel to an
existing franchise, and a horror film. All six films were very well done! The students of
Film Club had a movie premiere with their peers of St. Pius and it was a huge success!
Later that night, the students of Film Club were invited (along with their families) to join
us in our school library for a celebration of their hard work. We had our very own Film
Screening, complete with a red carpet, popcorn, and fancy, sparkling drinks. Bravo to
the students of Film Club!
In light of the tragedy in Fort McMurray, Alberta, the Social Justice students at St. Pius X
decided it was important to roll up their sleeves and help make a difference in the lives of
displaced children. Our initial meeting was on Tuesday, May 10. We met, mainly, to ask the
following question: If you had 15 minutes to grab anything from your home, what your take?
Most students said things like, toiletries, my passport, my phone and its charger, a snack. When
we asked, the same question, but asked for the students to pretend that they were five years
old. Their answers changed drastically. It brought to light that there are many children aged 4-
13 that are without something as simple as a book to read. We then decided to create backpack
care packages for children filled with student suggestions, like toys, bouncy balls, colouring
book and markers, a book to read, a skipping rope, and bubbles. After Miss Cerminara and Miss
Adomako-Ansah went on a shopping spree, the students successfully spent their lunch time on
Wednesday, May 11, constructing these care packages. The students showed plenty of
empathy while making these care packages and even included a card wishing the children of
Fort McMurray well. On Thursday, May 12, these care packages were picked up from our school
and will be delivered to children who really need something fun to do amidst all the horror of
the past couple of weeks. Well done to the Social Justice students of St. Pius X!

be the most convenient way to make payments. If you have not received a username and password for Power
School, please call the office at 780-453-3941. It is our goal to have everyone on and using it for the 2016-2017
school year.

In mid-August Transportation Services will be mailing out your child’s bus route information, advising par-
ents of the location and time of your child’s yellow bus pickup and drop off.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact transportation services at 780-441-6078.
Preordered School Supplies
We will continue a program at St. Pius X to make the return to school more convenient for our families. Write on
Stationary is a school supply company who will do your back to school, school supply shopping for you. In the
very near future, you will be receiving an order form for your child(ren) school supplies. Simply fill it out, enclose
payment, and your child’s school supplies will be waiting on your child’s desk on the first day of school.
Medication and Medical Information
Parents must pick up their child’s medication for the summer holidays. If you know that your child will be taking
medication in the 2016-2017school year, please contact our office to get the appropriate forms which will enable
you to receive the doctor’s consent over the summer months.
Class Configuration
Each year our teachers spend time, and effort into placing students in appropriate grade groupings. Teachers use
many criteria to make class lists. All parents are asked to respect that there is a lengthy process in which the staff is
involved and they construct class lists to ensure the best possible learning environment within each class for the
benefit of each student. On June 29th, if you are set up with a Power school account, you will be able to see what
classroom your child will be in, otherwise class lists will be available on the first day of school.
Summer Reading
What can you do to encourage your child to read during the summer? Where can you find the latest
recommended summer reading lists? How do you choose the right children's books for your child? What
type of book will be best for your child? There are a lot of resources available to help you interest your
child in reading throughout the summer.
Go to the Library for Summer Reading Fun
Your public library can be a great help as you encourage your children to read during the summer. Why
is it important? If you want your children maintain or improve their reading levels during the summer, you
need to keep them reading. You'll find special summer reading programs for both elementary and teen
readers at most public libraries. Many libraries schedule puppet shows, special performances and other
activities during the summer to add to the fun.
Get Books at the Right Reading Level
You need to keep two things in mind when helping your children choose books: their reading levels
and their interests. Check with your children's teachers at the end of the school year to find out their
reading levels. The reading level may also be listed on their report cards. Then, ask your children what
they'd like to read. (Note: If you are not sure of the reading level, you can use the five finger reading level
test with any book your child is interested in reading.) The children's librarian at your public library should
have reading lists to help you find books at the appropriate reading level.
If you are buying children's books, many show the reading level on the upper right hand corner of the
front cover (books for beginning readers) or on the bottom of the back cover (books for intermedi-
ate and young adult readers). Remember that different publishers use different criteria to set reading lev-
els so you may need to try several publishers and books to determine the best fit for your children.
