• Income $162,000.00, Budgeted $158,000.00
• Expenses $155,000.00, Budgeted $97,000.00 o Julia’s Paleo grant income offsets the expenses
• Investment funds did fairly well with net gain in value of $29,000.00
• The grant income will alter financials comparison for next two years
• Admissions up from last year
• Gift shops sales more than last year
• Memberships more than last year
• Strong start for 2018
• Finance Committee Meeting o Met with Alpine Bank Wealth Management
▪ 2017 great year with 13% gain on our investments o Will meet with Wells Fargo next month
▪ Unusually good year for our investments in 2017 Move to Approve By Arlene Baker Second by Deb Parman
Approved Business:
• Election/Ballot Discussion By Peter Booth o Needs, Timeline, and Message
▪ Executive Committee looked at the previous study and Peter’s pros and cons thoughts
• It was decided to have individual meetings with the County Commissioners o Main concern is if our current funding would be cut if we went to ballot
• Commissioners have to approve the ballot measure ▪ Decided not to move forward with ballot if could lose current $350,000.00 Funding
o Peter pros and cons (see handout) ▪ Staff not prepared for this, have full slate of trips and events planned for the year
o According to last study (2015), 38% voters favorable, 18% not ▪ Peter says this will be an uphill battle ▪ This study was 2 years ago, things have improved ▪ Cost will be $150,000.00 To $250,000.00 As per last year’s School District’s ballot
o Museum funding currently is on the edge ▪ Exhibits and buildings are aging and in need of repairs/replacements ▪ CMU study says it all is “old and tired” ▪ Museum is viewed favorably by public
o How do we influence swing voters? ▪ Economics ▪ Argument of providing stable funding ▪ Idea of preservation is important ▪ Idea to make it fair by the County
Museums of Western Colorado Board of Directors Meeting
February 27, 2018 Whitman Building-East Wing
pg. 3
• Election/Ballot Discussion (continued) ▪ Economic growth for community
o Needs going forward ▪ Would we want to go forward with established mil levy-property tax?
• Currently not under a mil levy, just subject to general budget o Started out as a mil levy, but was reinterpreted in 1990 o 1974-1990 received full amount, under Mesa County o County retained a lawyer & it was decided they could give us $1.00 And meet the terms
▪ Would we want to go forward with sales tax initiative?
• Not as favorable to voters according to study o Need to work against a message that we are moving out of the City and selling Cross Orchards o Notice terms that are ok to use and those that are not
• Would want to start with this right away o Short timeline o Some resources in investments, but would need to have fundraising o Set up committee of Board Members o Voting District 2 (Scott McInnis) and District 3 (Rose Pugliese) show more favorable
▪ Voting District 1 (John Justman) show strongest opposition
• Except for Fruita
• January Board meeting voted to look into a ballot measure o Peter has compiled this information o Will now meet with County Commissioners o Peter wants to hire
▪ Campaign Manager ▪ Campaign Business Manager to help Peter
• Not included in current budget o Must have strong Board commitment and help
• We only have one shot at this and it has to be done right
