WE’RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARDTHE FINAL SNAIL IS UPON US. It’s time to head for the shelter as there’s a twister on the way. This particular twister is sure to delight — The Wizard of Oz beginning December 20 at the Ed Mirvish Theatre. This entire issue is devoted to Dorothy and all her friends. Follow the yellow brick road to the nal Gauntlet puzzle, the destination might include a $10,000 Amex card with your name on it.

Snail is published bi-weekly until September 24, 2012 and is produced by Mirvish Productions. Though we have made every e ort to have this publication read and look like a real newspaper, we have no intention of getting into the newspaper business. Our goal is to provide a fun and informative promotional entertainment news source for the people of Toronto, and beyond. Snail welcomes submissions, but is not responsible for unsolicited material. Printed in Canada. Thank you for reading Snail! To contact us, please email [email protected]. Read back issues of Snail online at www.mirvish.com/snail. Over TheRainbowLet’s face it, rainbows are not just the domain of little girls and gays. Throughout history the rainbow has been a legendary symbol of life, prosperity and death.

Of course the most well-known rainbow myth hails from Ireland where clever and mischievous Leprechauns guard the pot o’ gold at the end of the arc, but that is only the beginning.

Many cultures believed Rainbows were a bridge between this world and the next. They have been called a Pathway of Souls, the Bifrost bridge to Asgard or the path to the upperworld, among others.

For Noah a rainbow was a sign of peace, their absence for 40 years was a harbinger of the end of the world for Medieval Germans, they represented a child-eating demon in Burma, and a vexed Devil in Honduras and Nicaragua! What does a rainbow mean to you?

Double double toil and trouble. The Three Witches from Macbeth are prophetic and downright creepy.

She murders and tortures with glee, but even the vile Bellatrix Lestrange is looking for love. Desperate to please Lord Voldemort this witch from Harry Potter holds nothing sacred. Dobby was too far!

The Greeksknow how to take a story to the extreme. Medea is possibly the scariest witch we’ve ever encountered. Cold-blooded and vengeful, she’d kill her own children to destroy her enemies.

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST IS ONLY ONE OF MANY CHILLING LADIES IN LITERATURE. WE’VE COMBED THROUGH THE BOOKS FOR SOME OF THE SCARIEST WITCHES TO EVER HAUNT YOUR NIGHTMARES AND RATED THEIR FRIGHT FACTORS: 5 BROOMS= TERRIFYING

Wicked Witches

The White Witch of Narnia. She lures Edmund into her trap with poisoned sweets and sweet words but she cannot be trusted. She is truly bad to the bone!

1959The popular ice skating show Holiday On Ice features a condensed version of The Wizard Of Oz.

1985Return To Oz is Disney’s uno cial sequel to the classic; it incorporates many characters from Baum’s sequels.

2003Maguire’s novel is adapted into a Tony award-winning Broadway smash hit musical.

2013The animated lm Dorothy Of Oz hits the big screen.

1902The rst musical adaptation

premieres in Chicago and then moves to Broadway in 1903.

1960The premiere

episode of The Shirley Temple

Show was titled The Land Of Oz.

1986A full anime adaptation

of Baum’s books called

The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz is created. The 52 episodes were

dubbed and edited by HBO

in 1987.

2005The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.

2013Oz: The Great And Powerful, a live-action lm about the Wizard’s arrival in Oz is set for a March release.

1908Dorothy, portrayed by Romola Remus, makes her rst appearance on the silver screen in The Fairylogue And Radio-Plays, Baum’s rst attempt to create a cinematic version of his Oz books. The multimedia event features lm, stage performance and magic lantern slides. Baum goes bankrupt.

1973Pink Floyd releases

their album Dark Side Of the Moon.

The band insists that the synchronicity

between the album and the 1939

lm The Wizard Of Oz is purely

coincidental. We’ll let you be the

judge.

1987-89The 1939 lm is adapted for stage again, this time for the Royal Shakespeare Company. It is truer to the screenplay than the adaptation from the ’40s. This reimagining was the rst production at the newly refurbished Elgin Theatre in Toronto in 1989.

2006Apocalypse Oz is a short- lm hybrid between The Wizard Of Oz and Apocalypse Now.

1910A silent lm based partly on the 1902 stage musical and directed by Otis Turner, is released.

1974The animated lm Journey Back To Oz is released as the o cial sequel to the 1939 classic.

1987The Wizard Of A.I.D.S is an adaptation used as an educational play about A.I.D.S.

2006My Way Home, the title of the 100th episode of Scrubs, is an homage to The Wizard Of Oz.

1925Another silent lm, featuring a young Oliver Hardy as the Tin Man makes its debut. It has very little in common with the original book but credits Baum’s son, L. Frank Baum Jr., as the screenwriter.

1971The Turkish Wizard Of Oz features Ayşa instead of Dorothy.

1995The Wizard Of Oz In Concert: Dreams Come True is a star-studded bene t concert at New York’s Lincoln Center.

2007The Sci Fi Channel released a mini-series starring Zooey Deschanel and Richard Dreyfuss called The Tin Man — a reimagined science ction version of Dorothy’s tale.

1939The MGM classic starring Judy Garland is released.

1975The Tony award-winning The Wiz puts Oz in the context of African-American culture.

1995Gregory Maguire’s

novel Wicked reimagines the

story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

2010Scott Stanford’s novel Dorothy: The Darker Side Of Oz is a modern retelling of Baum’s original story.

1942The 1939 lm is adapted into a stage musical.

1976Oz is an Australian reimagining of the classic lm transferred to hard-rocking 1970s Australia.

2011Oz — The Wonderful Wizard is a full-length ballet choreographed and directed by Giorgio Madia for Staatsballett Berlin.

1957Rainbow Road To Oz, a proposed Walt Disney live-action production, aired a preview on the Disneyland TV show. The show was abandoned.

1978The lm version of The Wiz, starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, is released.

2000The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, based on Baum’s novel, premiered at the Toronto Civic Light Opera.

Baum and beyondThe Wizard Of Oz is one of the most recognizable icons of American culture. It has been interpreted, reinterpreted, parodied, plagiarized and performed across every medium. Its latest incarnation, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s creation, will take to the stage at the Ed Mirvish Theatre this December. Before we get there, we wanted to follow the long and winding road that takes us from L. Frank Baum’s canon to the present — and a little beyond! We’re de nitely not in Kansas anymore.

There’s Something

About DarynCANADIAN COMEDIAN EXTRAORDINAIRE, Daryn Jones is the completely charming and adorable host of CBC-TV’s Over The Rainbow. While he may steal a scene or two, it’s his job to lead you through the difficult process of picking the right Dorothy for the stage production.

When it comes to his own opinion about what makes the perfect Dorothy, he’s very tight-lipped: “That’s not for me to say,” said Jones. “I don’t want to influence the vote. I’m everybody’s pal up there. But I imagine singing is a plus, she should know how to do some dancing, she’s gotta know how to wear that blue dress, she can’t be allergic to dogs, or if she has some Reactine or whatever, that would probably help.”

Jones is no stranger to live television. For the last six years he’s hosted MTV Live, a live comedy TV show. He’s written for The Rick Mercer Report, performs as astand-up comedian and was the host of Buzzed.

Does he have any advice for thewould-be Dorothys? Not really. “MaybeI can give some advice on how to handlean angry heckler,” he joked. “Whoever wins this competition, it’s not over. Then the real job begins; she’s got to be Dorothy and she’s got paying customerswho expect a great show.”

TOTOlly Adorable!L. FRANK BAUM DOESN’T SPECIFY TOTO’S pedigree, he just describes him as a little black dog. He’s been played by a variety of breeds.Terry, a Cairn terrier, played Toto in the 1939 film. Hundreds of dogs of all species auditioned to play Toto for the CBC-TV show Over The Rainbow. You’ll see the top 10 auditionees every Monday evening.

In The Wizard Of Oz stage production at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, three delightful Norfolk terriers will portray Dorothy’s canine companion. Toronto, meet Toto, or rather Totos — nine-year-old Tilley and six-year-olds Neddy and Winny.

This may be their first time at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, but it isn’t their first time treading the boards or strolling down the yellow brick road. Tilley, the veteran, has played Toto three times in as many years. Neddy and Winny are learning from their big sister and are excited to take the stage this December.

The three sibling pups got involved in theatre by chance. In their hometown of London, Ontario, Tilley’s stage presence was noticed while she was in agility class. Her owner, Terry Shevchenko, took her to an audition to play Toto at the Grand Theatre.

“Tilley blew me away how she took to the stage,” said Shevchenko. “After that, she was asked to take on other plays and Neddy and Winny were always the understudies.”

Don’t miss them at the Ed Mirvish Theatre beginning December 20. (The dogs are l to r: Winny, Tilley and Neddy)
