Over the last year we have achieved a number of successes, including:

• The West Midlands Quality Review Team visited in October 2011 and reported good service user and carer engagement. They were impressed with the storytelling approach that had been implemented across some of the Trust’s Learning Disability Services.

• The Research and Development Team recruited 684 patients and members of staff into National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) projects across many specialties within the Trust.

• In July 2011, we developed and launched a Staff Involvement and Engagement Strategy to actively improve levels of staff engagement.

• In October and November 2011, over 300 staff engaged in our Trusts Value and Vision events to share and co-create the future direction of our Trust. Early signs are that the Values and Vision of the Trust are better understood and more frequently reinforced.

• There have been no MRSA infections since 2007 and, this year we reported one Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). Statistically this represents a 50% improvement on reported CDIs in the previous year.

• The implementation of a Service Line Management structure with eight service lines across the three divisions.

• The use of patient stories, mystery shoppers and patient surveys inform the focus on continuous improvement and a discharge survey in 2011/12 showed that 93% of service users were happy with the services provided.

• Achieved 16 out of a possible 18 excellent scores and two good scores, in the Patient Environment Action Team Assessment (PEAT).

• Achieved Level 2 compliance in Information Governance management and Information Security assurance.

• Following the review visit the Care Quality Commission issued a formal report which confirmed improvements have been made since November 2010, and that the Trust is now fully compliant with Outcome 16.

If you had to compile an instruction manual in dealing with service users, putting them at ease, finding out what it is they want when they don’t really know themselves, handling situations with ease and complete and utter ability, then you would only have to observe her day-in and day-out.”

Opening Minds – early Intervention at newcastle Borough Museum and Art Gallery12 people using the Trust’s Early Intervention Service took part in an exhibition to showcase their art work at Newcastle Borough Museum and Art Gallery.

The featured pieces were on sale from £50 to £200, with 25% of the proceeds going to fund the museum and the remainder going to the artist.

Appointment of two GP AssociatesThe Trust welcomed two local GPs to its Board, to further strengthen the links between primary and mental healthcare.

Dr Keith Tattum, from Leek, and Dr David Sheppard from Blythe Bridge joined the Trust Board as GP Associate Directors.

May 2011

Staffordshire Police Awards - local Section 136 GroupSean McLachlan, Psychiatrist with the Criminal Justice Mental Health Team, and Carol Sylvester, Clinical Co-ordinator, joined their project partners from Staffordshire Police, Inspector Nigel Gunn, from the Northern Area Custody Facility and Detective Sergeant Sandra Jones, from the force’s Protecting Vulnerable People department, to collect the Police Authority Diversity in Action Award.

The team were recognised in their efforts to improve the response to members of the public found by the police seeming to be suffering from a mental disorder.

Stroke Oxygen StudyThe Stroke Oxygen Supplementation study (SOS) is studying the long term benefits or risk of routinely prescribing oxygen to patients for the first 72 hours after a stroke. This trial exists on the Comprehensive Local Research Network and Stroke Research Network portfolio and receives National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) support across the UK.

2011/2012 saw the study expand even further with the award of a NIHR Health Technology Assessment grant (of £1.4 million over four years) to continue the study, which is held jointly with Keele University.

unique Bench takes ‘Pride of Place’ in Therapy GardenA unique bench made by local students was donated to the Trust’s therapy garden. A former patient commissioned the bench from Stoke-on-Trent College, and has been inscribed with ‘May you find some comfort here’, from the Sarah McLachlan’s song ‘Angel’, which the patient used to listen to while in hospital.

Falls Awareness WeekVisitors, patients and staff were able to try on special glasses to find out how the world looks for someone with eye conditions, such as cataracts, and how to prevent falls.

‘The Impairment Experience’ involved people trying on glasses with special lens to mimic eye conditions so they can see how it affects their balance and walking.

July 2011

Dementia Awareness Week Memory ClinicsThe awareness week encouraged people to get help if they had memory problems. The team at the Meadowcroft Assessment Unit at Bucknall Hospital set up displays for patients and visitors with more information about dementia, and the treatment and support available.

August 2011

Phase One consultation launchedTogether with cluster commissioners, we launched the Model of Care Service Redesign programme, with the intention of changing the way in which a number of clinical services were delivered. These changes required public consultation, which were to take place in two stages.

Part One launched in August and the outcome meant we could make changes to dementia services, older people’s services, community services, rehabilitation care and the move toward closing the Bucknall Hospital site.

Phase Two considers further changes to the model of care within Adult and Older People’s mental health services, launching in May 2012.

September 2011

Annual General Meeting (AGM)The Trust held it’s AGM on Thursday September 22, 2011 in Wade Hall at North Staffordshire Conferences, formerly known as the Medical Institute.

It provided a chance to meet, and ask questions to, the Executive and Non Executive teams, about the Trust developments and see examples of excellent projects.

Introduction of Rapid Assessment Interface and Discharge (RAID) serviceIt was recognised that current liaison services needed to be expanded to provide support across all age ranges, 24 hours a day. This specialist 24 hour mental healthcare support was introduced and named The Rapid Assessment Interface and Discharge Service, or RAID. This helped patients quickly get the right care, at the right time and in the longer term reduce the demand on A&E services.

Mystery Shopper launchedThe joint project led by the Trust with Staffordshire and Stoke Partnership NHS Trust, NHS Stoke-on-Trent, NHS North Staffordshire as well as Staffordshire PCT Cluster and the University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust (UHNS) launched.

As a commonly used research tool in the retail sector, this was the first time it was being used across a whole health economy to find out valuable information about what people think of the services they use.

October 2011

World Mental Health DayLyme Brook Mental Health Resource Centre held a ‘Fun and Find Out Day’ as part of World Mental Health Day. Their aim was to raise awareness of mental health issues and the services the Centre offers. Celebrations included stalls, displays, refreshments, balloon making and local organisations supporting the day.

8

Service users’ artwork displayed in Harplands ReceptionA unique piece of art, designed by service users, was displayed to welcome visitors to Harplands Hospital. The montage was made by local people who have used the hospital’s services and attended a Project Group run by Harplands Acute Central Therapies Team.

The members of the Project Group have used images to show their feelings and experience of mental health, showing the journey that people may take on the way to recovery.

november 2011

Occupational Therapy WeekThe Occupational Therapy Team showcased the ways in which they help older people, with mental health issues, manage day-to-day activities such as dressing and using public transport to get out and about. The week included a display at Harplands Hospital and information leaflets about safety in the home.

european Antibiotic Awareness Day with a new RecordThe Trust promoted European Antibiotic Awareness Day which included displaying information about antibiotics and tips on how to avoid becoming resistance to antibiotics.

We also highlighted that the number of infections within the organisation had reduced, and that there had been no reported cases of MRSA since 2007.

Alcohol Awareness WeekThe specialist alcohol detoxification services from the Trust offered free tests to visitors at Harplands Hospital as part of National Alcohol Awareness Week.

The test, called an Audit (Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test), involved ten questions which were used to assess how much someone drinks and what their level of dependency is. This information is then used to find out the best type of treatment for someone, such as support or detoxification.

At the unveiling of the art work are, left to right, Myles Howson and Lisa Hartley, who are both members of the project group which created the art work, along with Sally Atkinson, Occupational Therapy Instructor who led the group.

new Chair appointedKen Jarrold C.B.E. was appointed as Chair of the Trust on Thursday December 1, 2011.

Ken is committed to healthcare and has worked with the NHS for 42 years. His previous roles have included Chief Executive of health authorities and he spent three years at national level as the Director of Human Resources and Deputy to the Chief Executive of the NHS in England.

January 2012

Foundation Trust application public consultation launchedWe launched the ‘Have Your Say’ public consultation which outlined the Trust’s bid to achieve NHS Foundation Trust status. This would allow greater autonomy and local accountability to enhance mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services.

This completed at the end of March 2012 and the application for Foundation Trust continues into 2012/13.

February 2012

Community Mental Health Survey launchedThe 2012 Community Mental Health Service User Survey aimed to find out what people receiving community-based support thought about the care they received.

Around 850 individuals were asked about various aspects of their care, and the feedback would be used to further improve service users’ experiences. The results were posted on the Care Quality Commission website.

Health and Wellbeing eventOn Wednesday February 1, 2012, the Trust encouraged people to visit stalls providing help and advice on keeping well and healthy, both physically and mentally.

There was a whole host of information and advice, from personal health checks to an opportunity to sign up for fitness sessions with Stoke City Football Club.

March 2012

HIGHlIGHT OF THe YeAR Staff ReACH awards149 nominations were received for the awards to recognise staff and volunteers for their outstanding contribution to the Trust. 10 overall winners were selected – see ‘Staff Achievement Awards’ for the full list on page 5.

Some stalls at the Health and Wellbeing event included the Sexual Health Clinic and CONNECT, with Ken Jarrold CBE, Chairman.

10

The application for NHS Foundation Trust (FT) has continued throughout 2011/12 with the final stages taking place next year.

As a FT we would still be part of the NHS, and we would have greater independence from the Government and more financial freedom to run our own affairs.

The Trust is also expected to develop a membership, headed up by a Council of Governors. Membership provides us with the ideal opportunity to engage with our local communities to respond to local need. We currently have 8,849 members (staff and public), which is 349 more than the target for authorisation.

If you would like to become a member you can contact our membership office on Freephone 0800 032 8728 or visit our website at www.combined.nhs.uk
