2019 DECEMBER I recently read about a 92-year old, petite, graceful, proud lady, always fashionably dressed and perfectly coiffed even though she was legally blind. Having recently lost her husband, she decided to move to a community with care available to avoid becoming a burden to her family. After sitting in the lobby for quite some time on her very first day, she smiled kindly when a nurse came to take her to her room. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, the nurse carefully described her room to her. “I love it,” she declared. The nurse replied, “But you haven’t seen the room .... just wait.” The lady spoke gently. “That doesn’t have anything to do with it. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged; it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.” This lady could be any one of us. We all, residents and staff, have the choice of experiencing happiness each and every day. We are free to arrange our minds to embrace friendship, community, good work and love. Further, we have the opportunity to share happiness with those who struggle because of worries, the complexities of life, loneliness and pain. To freely give and receive happiness is our gift to ourselves. Please take a moment to reflect on those individuals at Arbor Acres who live here happily, because of you and your donations. If you have already donated to the Resident Assistance Fund, thank you. If you are contemplating a gift for the first time, thank you in advance. If you find you are able to give a little more than last year, we celebrate the happiness of giving with you. Every gift matters. “There, but for the grace of God, go I.” Having a Choice by Denni Peebles

DECEMBER

I recently read about a 92-year old, petite, graceful, proud lady, always fashionably dressed and perfectly coiffed even though she was legally blind.

The nurse replied, “But you haven’t seen the room .... just wait.”

The lady spoke gently. “That doesn’t have anything to do with it. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged; it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.”

This lady could be any one of us.

“There, but for the grace of God, go I.”
