Hawaii is famous for its volcanic eruptions during the past 10,000 years. It is the home of the world’s most active volcano: Kilauea, on Mauna Loa on the Hawaii Big Island. People like snorkeling over the Molokini crater (a sunken volcano) because there are a lot of fish there.

Explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.

In three voyages Cook sailed thousands of miles across largely uncharted areas of the globe. He mapped lands from New Zealand to Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean in greater detail and on a scale not previously achieved.

Cook was killed in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779.

Page 20: Hawaii

Let’s listen to a Hawaiian song

Somewhere over the ________________

Way up high,

There's a land that I heard of

Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow

Skies are blue,

And the dreams that you dare to dream

Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a____________

And wake up where the clouds are far

Behind me.

Somewhere over the rainbow

Bluebirds _________.

Birds fly over the rainbow.

Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly

Beyond the rainbow

Why, oh why can't I?

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

Away above the chimney tops

That's where you'll find__________.

Games

PASS THE COCONUT

Like the popular game of “hot potato,” but using a coconut, have everyone

sit in a circle. Play Hawaiian music or strum an ukulele while participants

pass a coconut around. Stop the music and whoever is holding the coconut

is “out.” Continue until there is one person left.

ULU MAIKAʻ

Similar to lawn bowling, ulu maika is a traditional ancient Hawaiian game that ʻ

requires concentration and coordination. Place two wooden or metal stakes in

the ground, 6 inches apart and about 15 feet away from where the players are

standing. The goal  is to roll your stone smoothly between the two stakes.

Page 22: Hawaii

STOP THE DANCERS

A player sits in the center of a circle with a drum and a drumstick. All the

other players stand around the drummer. The drummer begins to beat the

drum and the players begin to dance. The minute the drummer stops, the

dancers freeze. They may be in awkward positions, but they must not move an

inch after the drumming stops. If the dancers do move, they must leave the

group. The drummer beats slowly as each game starts and gets faster and

faster. When the players are all out but one, that final dancer becomes the

drummer and the game begins again.

Games

HULA HOOP TIL YOU DROPʻ

Line everyone up and see who can go the longest or do the most hoops in a

timed contest. For an even more challenging competition, double or triple up

hula-hoops on the final two participants.
