EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 1-2016

7StepsThere’s a lot of talk about revving up your career inthe New Year. While reinvigorating goals inJanuary is an exciting endeavor, problems arisewhen excitement wanes, and the real work of jobsearch sets in.

So, how you do keep the embers of enthusiasmburning over the long haul of career change? Howdo you perpetuate that invigorating New Yearfeeling while methodically and planfully executingyour plan?

Following are some building block steps as well asideas to help you stay focused and energized asyou participate in your career change marathon.

1. Make a career change plan. This can begin as simple as brainstorming a fewkey steps to successfully move ahead in yourcareer. For example: 1. Brainstorm what type ofrole, specifically, you wish to land; 2. Researchtarget companies; 3. Revamp your résumétargeted to your new goal including the needs ofyour target companies; 3. Attain a new credential, pursue training or take a class in an area of growth

crucial to your career change; 4. Join an industryassociation; 5. Volunteer for a stretch project atyour current job that will set you up for success ina future role.

2. Schedule action steps in your calendar.Estimate timelines and plan out weeks, months andeven a year or more. I f you have mult iplecalendars; e.g., hand-written, electronic and/orwhiteboard, then use all of these. The more youwrite something down, the more l ikely youremember it.

3. Write out the sub-steps of each action. For example, writing a résumé is not as simple asdumping a few achievements on a page anddressing up the formatting. Potential steps mayinclude: investing in a recommended résumé bookor writer , completing a résumé worksheet, reviewing your achievements against the needs ofyour target companies, and much more. Take timeto strategize your résumé properly. As you build insub-steps, you may need to tweak major actionsteps to ensure calendar fluidity.

4. Be accountable to someone other than yourself.

Whether you hire a career coach or simply reachout to a colleague for ‘accountability partnership,’deepening your commitment to your goals ensuresthere is someone to whom you report regularprogress. This, in turns, ensures your goals don’tget buried by everything else. Moreover, the act ofsharing and celebrating successes with yourcoach/partner helps fan the enthusiasm flames, and perpetuate momentum.

5. Start telling people about your goals. For example, if a conversation you are engaged inoutside of work lends itself to sharing your futureaspirations, then do so. Opening up your careerdreams to interested others may feel vulnerable orpremature depending upon where you are in thetransition process; however, planting seeds nowcan be fruitful later. You never know whensomeone you’ve mentioned your goals to willencounter someone who needs your talent andtherefore can make an introduction. So, it’s not justwhat you know, it’s also who you know and whothey in turn know.

6. Be prepared to pivot. If your career plan gets knocked off its axis by a personal or professional crisisor other unplanned delays, then recalibrate. Delays are just that –postponements, not cancellations. As well, even when certain details of yourplan get overthrown, you can be creative in patching your plan’s structurewith strong, actionable ideas. For example, if your plan for advancingclassroom studies gets crushed, then find another way to learn the skills youneed through a part-time job, a volunteer role or another full-time role at adifferent company where the opportunity to learn is available to employees.

7. Stay calm. While you will have periods of hyper-productivity and advancement in regardto your career change goals, it also is likely you will have periods wheredisappointments reign or you are sluggish from too much on your plate. Thiscreates angst or overwhelm and may be a signal to step away from the careerchange process altogether for a brief period. As well, upon returning to yourplan, consider ramping back up with smaller, bite-size tasks, to ensure youmaintain a proper energy level for the long haul. n

EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 1-2016

Do you have a personal mission statement, andhave you melded it with your career?

In other words, (borrowing from Dictionary.com),do you have “an important goal or purpose that isaccompanied by strong conviction; a calling orvocation?”

Vision statements often are described similarly.

According to About.com, “Your personal visionstatement guides your life and provides thedirection necessary to chart the course of yourdays and the choices you make about your career.Your personal vision statement is the light shiningin the darkness toward which you turn to find yourway. It illuminates your way.”

Whether you dub it as your mission or your vision, the bottom line is that having a calling, somethingthat is a beacon of light guiding you when you getoff course, is the primary purpose of creating sucha statement. It is something by which you measureyour day-to-day actions and decisions.

Your mission statement should focus on others(and not just your personal goals)More broadly defined, a mission focuses beyond asingle specific outcome such as to “becomepresident of a company” or to “own your ownbusiness.” Instead, it often weaves in elements ofhow what you do will fulfill customer needs, solveproblems for your company, improve thecommunity, or even improve the lives of yourcolleagues or staff.

Now, with that done, you should consider howwhat you do makes you feel. In solving others’problems, do you feel satisfaction? In providing jobsatisfaction to your employees, do you in turnreceive a sense of pleasure? In other words, if youare providing a service or a solution that is mission-oriented, but you are lackluster or even miserablein the process, then it may be time to tweak howyou are achieving your mission.

Your mission statement should be flexibleWhich brings us to the idea that your missionstatement is fluid, evolving over time. And for

many, if you don’t know where to start, you may betoo overwhelmed to ever create one. There aremany books, and hundreds of articles on theInternet to guide you.

Getting started on your mission statementProbably the single best tip to just “get started” isto think about your special skills and abilities for amoment, and in particular, the ones that light yourfire. What is your special sauce? Are you acompassionate listener with an ability to warm upeven the most disgruntled client? Do you have aunique ability to crunch numbers? Are you a top-performer when it comes to selling widgets? Doyou have event planning skills that leave even themost skeptical attendee wowed?

Now, take that one trait you know people valueyou for and extend it into your mission. Simply, inone or two sentences, answer, “How will you usethat talent to provide value to your company, youremployees, your colleagues, your customers, yourvendors and ALL whom you touch during a givenbusiness day?” n

Job interviews aren’t only aboutimpressing the interviewer;they’re about sparking a newrelationship with your futureemployer.

The key to a successfulinterview is to keep theinterviewer talking. Sure, whileyou want to share why you’rethe best candidate for theposition, you also don’t want todominate the interview. On theother hand, i f i t seems l ikethere’s a lull in the conversation, you also want to keep theconversation going.

Maintaining conversation duringa job interview can be hard todo. Even if you write a list of fiveor 10 questions, the interviewermay not have much to say. Asyou prepare questions for theinterviewer, make sure they’rerelevant to the position. It’s alsoimportant to keep theminteresting and open-ended. Thiswill make it possible for theinterviewer to talk more duringthe interviewer.

I f you’re stumped on whatquestions you should ask, hereare five questions that will keepyour interview going:

1. What do you enjoy most about working here?

This is a great question to ask tolearn more about theinterviewer on a personal level. You’ l l pick up on theinterviewer’s feelings towardthe job and give them theopportunity to talk aboutthemselves during the interview.

When asking this question, you’ll also determine whetherthis job is the right fit for you. Ifthe interviewer is hesitant aboutanswering, it might be a signthey do not enjoy their job.

2. Where do you hope the company will be in five years?

This is another question that hasthe potential to get theinterviewer excited about theirjob. You’ll also learn about anyupcoming changes thecompany might experience andthe goals the interviewer has fortheir position within company.Learning this information willgive you a better idea of howyou’d f it as a potentialemployee.

article by Heather Huhman | glassdoor.com

TRY THIS.Searching for a job is intense — especially when you’ve been doing it for a solidsix months. It’s easy to give up and drown your sorrows in Netflix episodes ofModern Family and a pint of Haagen-Dazs. And when you’re not glued toNetflix, you’re glued to your other mobile devices — anxiously awaiting anygood news from hiring managers.

In a 2014 Glassdoor survey, 59 percent of job seekers believed they had a betterchance of being considered for a job if they applied as soon as the job was postedonline. But is it really helpful to be glued to your mobile device all day? No.Because there are plenty of other activities that are considered work than justapplying for jobs all day. If you let your résumé and skills ferment long enough, they won’t be as valuable anymore. Here are four ways job seekers can staypresent in the workforce and in life — even if they haven’t landed a job just yet:

Get certified. Take a class in something that may be of interest to hiringmanagers, could set you apart and make employers take notice of your résumé.Maybe you could accomplish your goal with more education or training, butyou’re not in a position to go back to school at this point. The answer just mightbe earning a certification in your current field or a new one.

The job market is extremely competitive. Instead of explaining the six-month gapin your work history, it’s easier to explain you were expanding your educationand taking classes during that time that contribute to the position for which youare applying. Attaining a certificate permits you to build skills and knowledgethat can help you do your work better — and most hiring managers know that.

Blog it out. Stay two steps ahead of hiring managers by creating your own

personal brand. Most often, they conduct online searches on job candidatesbefore deciding whether to offer them interviews. Chances are, hiring managerswill search your name on the web and look for evidence of involvement inbusiness networks and community projects.

Create a personal blog and write about topics that matter to employers. Apersonal blog is something done on your own time and shows your work ethic andwillingness to go above and beyond. You could even include the link to your blogwhen applying for jobs. They want to find examples of success at work orinternships, college or volunteer positions. Keep in mind any material on your blogshould be professionally written and error free. Consider what special projects youhave worked on in the past, and create a special tab for your portfolio.

Use your body instead of your brain. Sometimes, clearing your head is the bestway to get back on track during your job search journey. Instead of scouring jobboards 24/7, try doing something you consider stress-relieving. It’s important totake care of your body as well as your mind and find inspiration in other ways.Find a nearby trail and go for a run to get some fresh air, or grab some friendsand sign up for a fun group exercise class. These examples may seem very basicbut are simple stress.

Take a roadtrip. Visit a few places in your state where you’ve never beenbefore and find your inspiration in other ways. It’s important to step back fromyour routine for a day and have some fun. Spend a day or two driving to a cityand explore. What businesses are there? What do people do? Is there amuseum? Give yourself a chance to learn something new. You never knowwhere life will take you or who you will meet unexpectedly. n
