Let me start out this final article of the year by saying thank you to our graduating seniors and their families. It has been a wonderful 4 years and this graduating class has done much to help continue the traditions that make our school such a great place. On behalf of the staff here at MTHS, I wish our seniors all the best in the years to come and always remember that you will forever be a Terrace Hawk! Special congratulations to Darin Faul and the MTHS Jazz 1 Ensemble. They recently traveled to New York City to compete in the prestigious Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition. High school jazz bands from across the nation apply to compete and we were honored to be selected. Our jazz ensemble took Third Place honors. With regard to the final few weeks of school, we have much going on. Here is a rundown of the major events in the coming weeks: Senior Project Presentation Day- May 26th is the culmination of 8 months of hard work by our seniors. Each of them has designed and implemented a project that included 40 hours of time spent on the creation of a final product. On May 26th, our seniors will present to a panel of staff and community members and will share the outstanding work they have done over the course of the school year. Math End of Course Exams- On June 7th and June 8th, students who have not yet passed the state assessment in Math will be required to take one of two End of Course Exams—either Algebra or Geometry. We are working to identify which students will be taking which test and students will need to pass one of the two tests this year to fulfill the state graduation requirement. On both days, we’ll be on a late start schedule to allow time for our students to take these very important tests. Senior Finals, Senior Awards Night, Moving Up Assembly, and Graduation- Our seniors will take final exams on June 13th and 14th. Monday, June 13th at 7 pm we’ll have our Senior Awards Night in the TH Theater. Seniors’ last day of school will be June 15th and we’ll end the day with our traditional Moving Up Assembly where our school gathers to celebrate our seniors and say farewell. Finally at 6:30 pm on June 16th, we’ll hold our Commencement Ceremony at Edmonds Stadium. Final Exams and Last Day of School- Finals for 9th ,10th and 11th graders will be on June 22nd and 23rd. The last day of school will be on June 24th and we’ll be on an early dismissal schedule with students leaving at 10:20 am. Please check the school website for information about the final exam schedule and the schedule for the last day of school. Also, now is the time to take care of any student fees or fines that are outstanding. If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information. To our students and families returning to MTHS in 2011-2012, have a great summer vacation. We look forward to seeing you in the fall!

Spread the Word! Many past graduates have never picked up their diplomas. Diplomas from previous graduation years may be picked up in the counseling office!

Not Attending MTHS Next Year? It is important that a parent or guardian notify the registrar immediately once you know that your student will not attend MTHS for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Please email or call Mary Kikikis and it is important that you notify us which school your student will attend. [email protected] or 425 431 5662.

Address and Phone Changes: Please keep the school informed of any changes to your address or telephone number. Often we try to contact parents or guardians and we do not have a working number. Please call Mary Kikikis, registrar, by phone at 425 431 5662 or email her at [email protected] to update address and telephone number(s). You may also contact Mary via the Student Information Tab in SKYWARD by clicking on “contact us” and your email will go directly to Mary Kikikis.

Email Addresses Needed! We are increasingly sending information home via email. If you do not have your email addresses on SKYWARD you may miss vital information. For example, our summer letter to seniors will only be emailed. Please verify, add or update your email address online in SKYWARD Family Access from the MTHS website home page: www.edmonds.wednet.edu/mths . Just click on the “Account Info” button in the upper right corner of the screen. Please call 425 431 5663 if you need assistance accessing SKYWARD. If you do not own a computer you may access the internet through your local public library.

Running Start: First time running start students planning on taking fall courses need to apply by June 18th. See your counselor asap; Running Start students must make an appointment to speak with their counselor. Students who complete English 12 through running start will also need to sign up for culminating project (Bridge 155) class through the college. MTHS will no longer offer a culminating project class here for running start students.

Behind on Credits? As the year draws to a close this is also a very important time for you and your student to take stock of his/her credits. If you failed a class this year, summer is a good time to make it up. (Current juniors who do not have 16 credits in August will not be rolled up to senior status. If you have 15 – 15.99 credits you may be moved up if you meet with your counselor and develop a graduation plan.) Listed below are some of the credit retrieval options available.

Summer School Options: Summer School will be held at Edmonds-Woodway High School July 5 – July 29th. Each course costs $250 and earns .5 credit. However, ELL (English Language Learner) classes are free with a materials fee of $25. Summer School Applications are now available in the counseling office.

Edmonds eLearning: If you prefer to work independently online apply @ www.edmonds.wednet.edu/elearning. One .5 credit course taken during the summer costs $200. Most Elearning courses taken during the school year are free.

Volunteer Credit: Students may earn credit for volunteering. Applications must be submitted and approved prior to counting hours. See your counselor.

Private Instruction Credit: In certain cases classes taken off campus through a private instructor may be approved for credit. Applications must be submitted and approved prior to counting hours. See your counselor.

Correspondence Credit: See your counselor for details.

Summer HSPE Information: Since we have completed spring high school testing, the next opportunity for those students who missed a test or did not pass a test, is August testing. August HSPE Testing dates are as follows:

Writing - Monday and Tuesday, August 8 – 9 (both days required)

Reading – Wednesday, August 10

Science – Thursday, August 11 (graduation requirement for class of 2013 and beyond)

The registration window for August testing is June 1 – June 17. (Schools will receive electronic score files after June 1st.) Students or parents can register by phone with OSPI at 1 866 400 9275. Students will need their State Student ID number in order to register, which can be found on any previous HSPE or contact the counseling secretary at 425 431 5663.

2011/2012 Schedules may be viewed online beginning August 15th. Look for a summer letter inviting you in to make needed schedule changes. Students who wait until school starts to make changes may not be allowed to make changes unless there are missing requirements or have holes in their schedules. Students who requested Honors or AP courses may not drop those courses, so be sure to do summer homework! It is the responsibility of students to make certain that they have needed graduation requirements.

Seniors - Class of 2011

It is important for seniors who have been accepted into four year colleges to maintain academic excellence. It is the policy of four year colleges to review final high school transcripts and the offer of admission may be rescinded for a decline in academic performance or for dropping a course. Final transcripts will be postmarked on or before June 30th.

Seniors need to see their counselors on Monday, June 13th to obtain a Graduation Credit Verification form to take around to their teachers. These signatures will be proof that the student has passed their classes. Seniors need to return the forms with needed signatures no later then Wednesday, June 15th at 1 pm in order to participate in commencement exercises. Students must secure 22 credits, fulfill state testing requirements and pass all required core courses in order to participate in commencement exercises. Students taking classes off campus (intra-district, Sno-Isle or Running Start) will need to pick up another form to obtain the off campus signatures. This year diplomas will be given to students once the signatures have been obtained. However, students taking running start courses will have their diplomas held until we receive grades from the college. These diplomas may be picked up at the counseling office June 28 – 30th or after August 22nd in the counseling office.

If you will not graduate this year we encourage you to make an alternative plan with your counselor for earning a diploma.

If you have not yet met with your counselor to review graduation and college entrance requirements you may still do so by

scheduling an appointment with the counseling secretary. You also need to give thought to what you will do for your culminating project next year. Look on the school website at www.edmonds.

wednet.edu/mths/ClassActivities/culminatingProject. You can find templates and guides for what to expect next year as you do your project. If you are planning on attending a four year college or university directly out of high school you need to take a SAT or ACT examination. If you did not apply for the May or June SAT and/or ACT then be sure to register for the SAT October 2011 test date. Study guides are available online through

www.collegeboard.com (SAT) and www.actstudent.org (ACT). Additionally, summer is a great time to visit colleges. Many host tours for prospective students. Look on college websites to sign

up for tours. Please make sure you meet college admissions requirements; check college websites as not all colleges have the same requirements. One last note: The University of Washington admission’s deadline for the class of 2012 is December 1, 2011. Also, check out the wealth of information available on the MTHS

website; you can find college information under “Academics”, “Counseling” and the “Career Center.”

As the end of the year draws to a close it is important to stay focused and work hard to earn the best grades possible. Final exams may make an important difference in grading. It may be stressful, but putting in some good study time, sleeping well and eating a good breakfast each day will help. Students who do not eat breakfast do not do as well in school as those who do. Feed your brain! Once school has finished it will be time to enjoy your free time, but it is also great to stay active. Summer opportunities abound and if you are too young to get a job there is good news! You are never too young to do volunteer work. Go to the career center tab and then click on “Volunteer Opportunities”. As a bonus you may apply to earn volunteer credit. A completed application must be submitted and approved before counting hours.

Feeling Down? Noticing changes in a friend or family member’s mood?

Although springtime is a time of new beginnings and the start of better weather (hopefully J) these changes can also bring with them unexpectedly challenging changes in mood. In addition to this, rough economic times, which often effect several areas of our lives, can make this a rough season. If your student or someone else you know exhibits the following behaviors, please address these concerns immediately with his/her doctor or counselor:

• Sad, irritable, or grouchy for a prolonged time• Nothing is fun, even activities that used to be• Not interested in anything• Change in appetite• Trouble sleeping• Less talkative or active than usual• Less energy• Feeling bad about his/herself• Difficult paying attention• Unable to make decisions

• Thinks about death or dying

Be a Part of the Mountlake Terrace Endowment Scholarship Association (MTESA)MTESA was formed in 1982 by a group of MTHS teachers who wanted to give back to the students. Each year scholarships are awarded deserving students. The scholarships are based on financial need, academic excellence, and involvement in the community. The scholarships are funded by donations from the staff and community. There are two ways to give:

• Send a check to MTESA (You may sponsor a scholarship. In the past scholarships have been named in honor of loved ones or given toward specific areas.)

• Donate through the United Way campaign at your place of employment.

As our economy continues to lag, there is a particular need this year. Contributions are tax deductible. If you would like more information contact: John Traxler, MTESA President ~ [email protected]

From the Library: Check Out What’s New!

Kasey Meier MTHS Librarian

Student of the MonthStudent of the Month

Joan Tran Jack Walters

While it may seem early to talk about a final due date for Library books, that date is fast approaching. All Library books are due by June 8th. That said, special arrangements can be made for students who need books for classroom assignments. Overdue book notices will go out in early June. Students with special book requests or questions about items listed on overdue notices should see me as early in June as possible.

The Library now has two new computer carts, each containing seventeen full size Lenovo laptops. They are very nice, indeed. Carts are available for classroom use by reservation. In a time of reduced budgets, we are so lucky to have voters who support school levies. This year the library was able to add approximately three hundred books to the collection, primarily new young adult fiction. Acquisitions also included titles to support instruction in Biology, History, Physical Science, and AP English. Grants from the Edmonds Public Schools Foundation provided over half of the needed purchasing power. Avid readers are particularly grateful for their support!Earlier this year local teen author Tiffany Leahy spoke to several English classes about her newly published novel, Annadyomene. In an effort to inspire other teens to write, she offered students the opportunity to participate in a writing contest that she was personally sponsoring. That was then, this is now: the Microsoft Corporation became aware of Tiffany’s work when she was featured on KCPQ-13 and decided to co-sponsor the sixteen year old author’s project. That’s good news for several freshmen who

take English from Ms. Kinnear. Out of a handful of entries, three were selected for formal recognition. I’m told that other schools have only had two entries selected for further consideration. Not only does MTH have three, all three have been selected to receive as yet unidentified prizes from Microsoft. Congratulations to Gabrielle Harter, Hailey Martin, and Elliot Nebel. An awards ceremony will be held at the Microsoft store in Bellevue next September. All three are still in competition for first prize, which includes collaborating with Tiffany to create a character for her next novel and additional recognition from Microsoft.

You should have seen the pile of toiletries we collected for Pathways for Women and Lynnwood Kiwanis House within the week. Four students: Quinton Barnard, Sera Motokana, Amanda Schnee, and Micah Walburg collected items outside of Albertsons one afternoon. Shoppers who heard about the drive came back with bags of hotel items. Lots of folks dropped of bags if goodies at the MTHS office. In all, eight big boxes of shampoo, soaps, personal hygiene, baby goods, and tons of sample sized items were delivered to each location.

Thank you so much for your support of our Key Club and their projects this year. We had our most successful year to date. With our President Katie Wicklander at the helm, and Colin Miller as our VP, we did a project each month, built our club to almost 30 active kids, and are looking forward to next year.

Music Department News and EventsJazz Ensemble 1 is one of the top three high school jazz bands in the country! MTHS placed third at the Essentially Ellington Competition in New York City on May 14. Taylor Call, Skyler Floe, Kendall Irby, Forest Jackson, and Jack Walters won outstanding soloist awards and the trombone and rhythm sections outstanding section awards. Chaperone Shaunne Walters stated Jazz Ensemble 1 “did a fabulous job…up against stiff competition.” The band also enjoyed the Big Apple including jazz clubs and a Broadway play.

The May 7th band program “Swing, Swing, Swing” was a successful send-off for Jazz Ensemble 1 to NYC and a band fundraiser. Thank you to Rev. Roberts and the Swingsette, BTMS and MTHS jazz bands, and volunteers and donors for a fun evening of music, swing lessons, dancing, raffles and desserts.

Jazz Ensemble 1 was also busy performing at Starbuck’s Hot Java Cool Jazz in April receiving a standing ovation. The audience was especially appreciative of Jack Walter’s clarinet solo in “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The jazz band will receive a share of the proceeds from the sold out concert and an additional $2000 for selling the most adult tickets.

There are more accolades for Jack Walters who won the State Solo Competition for clarinet in Ellensburg April 30th. Jessica Lindsay received a Superior composite rating for oboe at the competition too.

The Dynamics and Accents had a recording session at Bastyr Chapel on April 26th. The choirs worked hard, but had a fun time too. CDs of 16 songs are available for pre-order for $6 each with distribution by the end of the school year. Please contact Geri Pingul at [email protected] by May 26th.

The Accents and Dynamics performed at the Music in the Parks Festival at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Saturday, May 14. Both groups received Superior ratings for their performances and garnered First Place Trophies. The members enjoyed a sunny afternoon and the rides at Silverwood Park. The choirs stayed in Spokane and experienced the Spokane Riverfront Park in all its spring glory. Director TJ Sullivan stated “between the excitement of a demanding musical performance and exhilarating roller coasters, the kids were exhausted as you can see in the (Dynamics) picture.” Everyone had a good time!

The orchestras participated in another successful SE Quad Orchestra Concert on April 26th with a grand finale performance of the 5th through high school orchestras. Music Boosters still needs two orchestra parents to represent the orchestra program and support Director Jennifer Schillen for the next school year. Please contact Mrs. Schillen at [email protected] or Julie Lotz at [email protected].
