Hawley Lutheran Church –LCMC Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ

Worship, grow in faith and serve the Lord.

No matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.

Greetings HLC Family, All in. To be fully committed to a task or endeavor; to give or be prepared to give all of one’s energy and resources toward something. In life, in marriage, in parenting, in our careers, in sports, we get the idea of being all in. It’s what we strive for, what we work for, what we encourage in our kids and grandkids. When it comes to things that matter, we are all in. But what about being all in for faith? Why is it that when it comes to faith, the church, religion, we struggle and waver about being all in? Research reveals some of the challenges we encounter when it comes to all in faith. The Christian Church has developed a reputation of being judgmental, hypocritical, and politicized. Christians talk a lot about Jesus, but don’t walk much like Jesus. When it all comes down to it, the message the church is sharing just doesn’t resonate with people. For whatever reason, the Gospel isn’t being conveyed, shared or lived out in a way that impacts our day to day lives. It just doesn’t matter. This grieves my heart, not because I’m a pastor, but because I am a sinner, with a broken, messed up past and story, who was rescued and transformed by the relentless love of Jesus.

So, how do we live out our faith and a testimony of Christ that matters? First, we speak the truth: It has been a trying few years. Our church is coming through a challenging season. But more than that, the world is a desolate, dark, broken place. It feels overwhelming. This is followed by a promise: we have this Light, this hope, this anchor, this promise. His name is Jesus. Then, we go all in. Heart. Soul. Strength. The following pages include information for all the ways to be all in this fall and school year. There are many opportunities to know Jesus, grow in faith and go in service. Not just to do things, fill the calendar and check the box, but because it matters. Brothers and sisters in Christ, this fall I invite you to be all in, for the name and renown of Jesus.

Hello there, I am Erik Carlson, the new youth director and worship leader here at Hawley Lutheran Church! I am so excited to join you, and be a part of the awesome ministry that happens here! First I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Fargo ND, graduated from

Fargo South High school in 2007, where I played baseball, football, and played the saxophone in the band and jazz band. I then went to Concordia college in Moorhead, where I majored in English literature, played football, and was in a few worship bands for a student led worship that would happen on Sunday evenings. I was raised in the Lutheran faith, being baptized at Wolverton Lutheran church, and growing up going to Trinity Luther-an church where I was very active throughout high school and college. After graduating from Concordia, I began working at Peace Lutheran church in North Fargo. I worked there for 4 years, as their youth director, but ended up having to leave when the position was changed to part-time. I then spent the next couple years working towards an education degree, and working at a lawn-care company in Fargo. My then fiancé and I went to church

on a very random Sunday we were supposed to be out of town for, and I ran into some old friends, who asked if I was still interested in ministry. Well next thing I knew I was working at First Lutheran Church in Fargo for the next 3.5 years, as their senior high youth director, I also helped lead worships as well. My wife Kari and I got married in January of 2018, and welcomed our first child in March of 2020. His name is Hugo, and all three of us are very excited to join the ministry happening at Hawley Lutheran Church! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at FLC, but when this opportunity arose for me to come to Hawley Lutheran Church, God definitely hinted at me that this was a place I should be. I am really excited for the ministry opportunities that HLC provides. I am really looking forward to leading worships with you all. On that note if you have any interest at all about joining the worship band as a singer or musician please contact me ([email protected] or 701-367-1198)! I am also very much looking forward to starting a new youth group and senior high ministry team here, I have lots of plans for this coming school year and summer. In peace,

Erik Carlson

September:

ALL IN To be all in is to be fully committed, ready and willing

to give all of one’s energy or resources for a cause.

When we’re all in, we don’t hold back. We’re all in.

What then does it mean to be all in with God? Well,

Jesus told us: heart, soul, mind and strength. All In

will examine Mark 12:30 and the command to love the

Lord with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. As we

grow in an understanding of these words, we see a love

of God and others

that defines our

entire being and

life and impacts

our church and

community for the

glory of God.

Begins

September 12 and

September 15

October:

THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED ME As Christians, we believe the word of God is living and

active. We don’t hear much about the personal

experiences (testimonies) of how the word of God came

alive in the lives of believers. And yet, many people can

point to a passage of scripture and say, “that’s the

one.” The Message That Changed Me series will be

an opportunity for Hawley Lutheran to hear from

various preachers about passages of scripture that

impacted, transformed or clarified the Gospel. The

final week of the

series will be

Confirmation

Sunday, in which

we celebrate our

Confirmands and

be challenged to

take hold of the

message that

changes

everything.

Begins October 10

Be watching the mail for info on Senior High Youth

Ministry beginning Wednesday, September 15!!!

Bring a story of how you all passed the time during

the long COVID separation. Judy and I played 259

games of Scrabble. We stopped after that because she

won most of them. So our first meeting will be Thurs-

day, Sept. 16, at 2:00 PM. in the church fellowship

hall. We will be able to distance socially for those who

would like to. Pastor Andrea will be our guest and

share with us her Faith Journey in Christ. Further

planning will be done at that time. I look forward to

being with you all and catching up. We will have

a coffee hour with light lunch. Others of the Hawley

Lutheran Church Family who would like to come are

cordially welcome to join us.

Hope to see you there. Pastor Darwin <><

It is an exciting time at Hawley Lutheran as Fall arrives and we continue our long history of ministry! We celebrate that we are a congregation of new members and longer-term members of all ages and stages of life. God has generously given each of us gifts, talents, and life experiences to be shared for His glory and in service to others, both in

our daily lives and in His church. In the coming weeks you will hear about needs and opportunities to become involved in sharing our unique gifts in the ministry of HLC. Various Teams (formerly called "committees") will focus on many wonderful areas of ministry. Each of us is invited and encouraged to become involved in big or small ways. Please prayerfully consider where you feel called to share your time and your gifts to enrich our ministry. Consider these words from 1 Corinthians...

Chapter 12: 4-6. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work...12. Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts for one body, so it is with Christ...27. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."

Together we are blessed to be a blessing!

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (OCC)

It’s that time of the year again! Members of Hawley Lutheran Church along with Wednesday and Sunday Treasure Kids and CREW can have the opportunity to participate in Operation Christmas Child. Through the gifts and prayers of many people like you, God has enabled us to reach children in over 150 countries around the world. Even greater is the opportunity is to pray for them and to be able to share with them the hope of eternal life in Christ.

OCC boxes can be picked up at the church office or you can use your own shoe box. Below are ways that you can participate this year: • HLC members can put together their own box(es) – items are listed below • Grandparents can “sponsor” a box with their grandchildren • Contribute money towards postage for boxes (each box cost $9) or money towards purchasing items for the

boxes • Wednesday/Sunday/CREW kids – each class put together their own box OR collect specific items listed

below and Mission Team will pack box • HLC members bring specific items to church and Mission Team will pack boxes – we will have a table set up

under Mission Team bulletin board to collect items 1. Wow item: soccer ball with pump, doll, stuffed animal, shoes 2. Toys: toy cars, jump ropes, yo-yos, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries) 3. Non-liquid Hygiene items: Toothbrushes, bar soap, washcloths, combs, brushes 4. School Supplies: pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, markers; notebooks and paper; coloring and

picture books, solar calculators 5. Accessories: socks, sunglasses, jewelry and watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)

Please check out SAMARITANSPURSE.ORG/OCC for further information about Operation Christmas Child.

OCC boxes/items will need to be in to church office by Wednesday, November 3.

Thank you for helping us to be JESUS to lots of children this Christmas! The Mission Team

Spirit of Giving Christmas Project @ REACH The Mission Team will set up a table when the time comes to pick a tag to give a gift to a child. Each tag gives you the age, gender & a Christmas wish list for that child. Please RETURN the wrapped gift to the REACH office. Thanks.
