AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE
REPORT
Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside.
Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-social Behaviour, off
road Bikes. Calls for service to these areas saw an
increase in recent months and centres in and
around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road,
Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land
owned by local farmers and others.
The times of reports vary throughout the 24 hour
period. The calls include reports of theft including theft of cable, burglary, suspicious persons with dog(s), criminal
damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff
and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are
committing these acts and routes they use. Off road bikes are still being used on land without permission and
illegally. UPDATE; There has been a decrease in calls involving farmland. There has been a reduction in the
cable thefts, however as a division we are still experiencing a level of these types of thefts. We would encourage
any suspicious activity to be reported immediately to the police. Cable thefts affect the connection of phones, TV’s
and broadband to name a few and can massively impact entire communities, isolating vulnerable people and in some
cases limiting access to emergency services. At this time further legislation to enable the agencies to deal with
offences is being established.
Humberside Police and energy suppliers are working together to collate and jointly investigate and prevent further
offences occurring. Some suppliers are also working with surrounding police forces as these offences are not
confined to Humberside. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is far
better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police
areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their
activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so
Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear
normal.
We have leaflets which contain advice for parents and riders of the various bikes being used off road. Please
contact PC Starbuck if you wish to have one delivered to you or you can call in at Epworth Police Station when the
front counter service is available by a member of staff, generally on a Monday or Thursday during 0900 to 1500hrs,
to avoid a wasted journey it may be prudent to call on 101 to check that the front desk service is running that
particular day.
Calls for persons trespassing on land with dogs had dropped recently, but this does not mean we have seen the last
of such persons. Countrywatch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from
farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which
warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Anyone
wishing to join please contact PC 1839 Starbuck for further information and an application form. We have
now also got members joining from just outside the Humberside Police area and we encourage everyone to
promote the scheme and new members are always welcome. We are also looking at whether there is sufficient
interest to launch a Horsewatch scheme to run alongside and under the banner of Countrywatch. It would involve
attending a meeting in Epworth held every 3 months and other benefits to be finalised if interest is sufficient. If
anyone is interested in becoming part of this please contact PC Tina Starbuck, details below
Any on-going matters or suspicious activity can be reported on the new Local police telephone number of 101 OR,
if any information is to be passed then please feel free to e-mail the Neighbourhood team using the details below;-

Wroot Crime Prevention.
Calls for service to the village of Wroot saw a rapid rise in December, where offences included thefts and non
dwelling burglaries over a period of time during the night.
UPDATE; The amount of crime reported has reduced and we are grateful for all the phone calls we have received
and the information the residents have given. Please remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the Police.

Rachel Shaw will be entertaining us on Thursday April 5th at 7.30pm when she will be telling us about
her visit to the Philippines. Rachel works for the Lincolnshire Trust as Publicity Officer and she has
travelled to other parts of the world, both to walk and look at conservation so this promises to be an

Slug Workshop
On Thursday May 3rd at 7.30pm Chris de Feu will be telling us everything there is to know about slugs
and people who have already been to this workshop have said that it is very interesting so don’t be put off
by the title. To many people slugs are just pests that should be destroyed but perhaps there is another
side to them, do they have a purpose? There are several different types of slugs and we are asking those
who come along to bring some with them if possible. We look forward to seeing you and your slugs
on May 3rd.
All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low

Haxey Parish Heritage Trail
Haxey Library
The Library in Haxey is a valuable asset to the community to which we should give our full support. To this end the
Parish Council has formed a Working Group to consider, in conjunction with North Lincolnshire Council, possible
ideas for enhancing the role of the Library. In the meantime, we would encourage residents to join the Library and
use the facilities available which include access to the internet.
398 Belton to Gainsborough Bus Service
Following the proposal to withdraw the 398 bus service, Cllr Allcock, Ward Councillor had discussion with North
Lincolnshire Council who has tendered the service and a new agreement has been reached with Stagecoach for
them to continue to operate the service. There has been a change of departure time from Belton; the service will
start at 0945 hrs from Tuesday 3 April 2012.
Bus time tables have been placed on the parish notice boards and the Parish Council website for your information.
Parish Plan
Haxey Parish residents will recall the decision the Community took in 2009 to produce a Parish (Community Led)
Plan, aimed at setting out the vision and development of their local area over a 5 year period. The research for the
Plan took place over an 18 month period and was supported by Officers from North Lincolnshire Council (NLC)
and Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC), culminating in the production of the document in
June 2010. The Plan’s progress has been monitored and actioned through the work of the Parish Plan Action
Group(PPAG) and at its meeting in February, it was decided to hand over responsibility to the Parish Council (PC),
with the formation of a Parish Plan Working Group of Councillors, which will continue to be open to residents. The
overall analysis of opinion in the Parish Plan revealed that the majority of residents were mostly content with the
environment and their lives in the Parish. Many thought it a friendly place to live with a real sense of community
and they liked the quiet rural setting. Reference was also made to the excellent local facilities, including schools,
The Haxey Parish Heritage Trail has
now been completed with two main
information boards having been
installed at Westwoodside (Park)
pond and in front of the church,
together with 20 local information
signs at points of interest. Leaflets
will soon be available to guide people
around the trail.

doctor’s surgeries, village halls and playing fields; however, there were issues raised and these formed the basis of
the subsequent Action Plan, which set out the problem; how it would be tackled; the priority; the timescale; those
responsible and any resource implications. Timescales for actions varied from short term out to 2015; however, it
should be noted that there was no extra funding provided by any Agency for the implementation of the Plan. The
full Action Plan is set out in the Parish Plan document, which is available on the PC web-site. Progress to date has
been excellent and of the 54 Actions identified over half have now been completed. Current progress and
planned ways forward on issues is summarised as follows: Roads, Traffic and Transport. Road, traffic and
transport issues were considered highly important to residents and since the publication of the Plan, the Parish has
seen the periodic installation of flashing speed signs around the local area and the more frequent enforcement of
speed restrictions by the Police. The approach to Westwoodside along Doncaster Road will shortly have the
speed limit reduced and there continues to be a lobby on NLC to reduce the speed limit adjacent to schools to 20
mph. Car parking is still a concern, particularly in Haxey along Church Street and Greenhill; however, liaison with
the Police, NLC and local residents is continuing in the hope of improving the situation. The poor state of roads
and pavements remains a problem and whilst there has been some success with the resurfacing of Akeferry Road,
consultation continues with NLC Highways to ensure the Parish is correctly prioritised for repairs; however, with
the current lack of available funding the situation is unlikely to improve in the near future. Public and Community
Transport is under continual review and the PC and Ward Councillors are well aware of the issues, which are
being addressed, with the relevant authorities, where possible. Bus timetables and stops are recent areas
consulted on.
Housing and Development. The feedback from residents on housing and development was straight forward:
restrict housing development in certain locations e.g. Greenfield sites and gardens and ensure that new housing
comprises a mix of types, size and tenure. The PC has continued to reflect these opinions in its recommendations
on Planning Applications and the NLC Local Development Framework; moreover, it will continue to promote
these views in future consultations with the Principal Authority. An Affordable Housing Needs Survey was carried
out in March 2011 in consultation with HWRCC and NLC. The findings of this survey, which had a 21% response
rate from residents, concluded that: the recommended mix of affordable housing for Haxey Parish is a scheme of
16 homes with 14 homes for rent and 2 for shared ownership with the mix of 4 X 2 bedroom bungalows; 6 X 2
bedroom houses; 2 X 1 bedroom flats and 4 X 3 bedroom houses. There has been little further progress on this
issue since the survey, principally due to the lack of available funding or interest from local Housing Associations.
Environment. The Parish continues to support the CPRE Best Kept Village Competitions and last year
Westwoodside Playing Fields won the Best Playing Fields category. Litter picking has taken place over the past
year and the PC continues to provide hanging baskets around the Villages and the now appointed Parish
Handyman is involved in planting schemes to improve the look of the Parish. A Heritage Trail has been developed
with funding from the PC and LEADER and has now “gone live” this spring. Flooding continues to be a major
concern to the Parish and following lobbying from the Local Drainage Board and a Ward Councillor, Policy 4 has
now been adopted in the Trent Catchments Flood Management Plan, which will provide improved flood defences
for the area. The Isle of Axholme Flood Strategy document, the Low Burnham Flood Relief and Haxey Village
Drainage schemes have all been completed. Dog fouling is an ongoing issue in the Parish and the PC is working
with NLC to ensure that there are sufficient bins provided around the Villages and clean-up is enforced.
Local Facilities. Following the recent reprieve for Haxey Library, work continues with Ward Councillors and
NLC Cabinet Members to develop the facilities provided by the Library. These could include using the Library as
a focal point for the assessment of resident’s needs in relation to NLC services. The PC has drafted a Community
Emergency Plan, which is nearing completion and has also stockpiled a limited supply of Floodsax to be used in any
localised flooding events. A limited supply of salt and grit, to be used to support supplies provided by NLC around
the Parish, has also been stockpiled.
The Community. Liaison with the Police on the tackling of local crime problems is ongoing; the inauguration of
a local Farm Watch has proved successful and the encouragement of Neighbourhood Watch schemes and the well
attended, regular, Safer Neighbourhood Meetings continue. The PC is implementing an improvement package for
it’s’ website and plans are in place for the updating and provision of a Parish Directory during the year.
In summary, since the publication of the Haxey Parish Plan in June 2010, there has been considerable progress
made in implementing identified actions. Work will continue to complete any outstanding issues over the next
few years; however, with the recent disbandment of the PPAG, responsibility for the Action Plan moves to a PC
Working Group which will be able to co-opt residents to assist with further implementation and any subsequent
updating. On behalf of the community, thanks are extended to the members of the original group, who were
responsible for the data gathering and publication of the Parish Plan and to the PPAG who carried out the initial
implementation. Without the considerable effort of these groups, the Plan, which is considered an excellent
document by the Principal Authority and HWRCC, would not have been produced.

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY A number of railway schemes for the Isle of Axholme were mooted in the 19th century. One
of the suggested London to York routes was to have been through the Isle, but nothing came of it. During the 19th century there were about 200 separate railway companies at one period.
To build a new railway, a Bill had to be put before Parliament. This was costly and time consuming. Rival companies that sometimes ended in the schemes being dropped could raise
objections.
In 1846 George Hudson, the ‘Railway King’, promoted the idea of the Axholme, Gainsborough and York & North Midland Junction that was intended as a link between York and the Eastern
Counties Railway. The plan had to be submitted to Parliament, but the House of Lords rejected
this. In 1847 there was a proposal to build a railway from Gainsborough through Axholme to
Askern, but the idea never materialised. In 1878 the Great Eastern Railway sought an extension of its system into the lucrative Yorkshire coalfield by proposing the construction of a
line to Askern through part of the Isle of Axholme. The Great Northern Railway opposed this scheme.
In 1883 the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway put the idea of a tramway forward. It was to have a 3’ 6” gauge and was to run from Haxey to Eastoft. This again never
materialised.
In 1896 the Light Railways Act was passed which facilitated the provision of railways in rural areas. It permitted the construction of a line under a Board of Trade Order, instead of seeking
Parliamentary permission. In 1898 the Goole and Marshland Light Railway scheme, to build a railway from Goole to Reedness, Eastoft and Addlingfleet, was confirmed. The Isle of Axholme
Light Railway scheme was proposed in the same year. It was to run from Haxey north to link with Goole and Marchland railway. In 1899 the Board of trade confirmed the scheme
authorising the construction of 22 miles and 6 chains of railway. The line was to run from Haxey Station on the Great Northern and great Eastern Joint Railway north through Haxey,
Epworth, Belton and Crowle to Reedness. A four and half mile branch line was built from
Epworth north, down to Hatfield Moors. By 1902 both the Goole and Marshland and the Axholme Railway had been taken over by
the North-Eastern Company (N.E.) and the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L. & Y.) – hence the name Axholme Joint Railway (N.E. and L. & Y.).
In 1922 the North Eastern Company became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (L.N.E.R.).
The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway became part of London and North Western, which in turn
became part of London, Midland and Scottish
(L.M.S.). Thus the Axholme Joint Railway continued, but it became a L.M.S. and L.N.E.R. Joint. The
Transport Act of 1947 brought the Axholme Joint Railway under British Railways (North-Eastern
Region).

WESTWOODSIDE Church of England SCHOOL
Celebrating Strengths Update
We are now 7 months into building a Strengths Based School and we would like to share our journey so far with
you. I am delighted to say that ‘Celebrating Strengths’ activities have flourished in all year groups from F1 (Nursery)
to Year 6 ( 11 year olds ). Using storytelling, celebrating festivals and noticing and building on children’s strengths
to compliment the existing curriculum, our school is developing a strong strengths based ethos.
Year Groups
Our youngest children in school can talk with confidence about their individual ‘top strength’, whether it be
creativity, friendship, love of learning or one of the many others and because each strength has an accompanying
British Sign Language action as they talk about the strength they are able to do the action. Years 1 and 2 have used
Celebrating Strengths themes recently to great effect in their class assemblies and included some thoughtful ideas
and lively drama. Our Year 3 to 6 classes have used different strengths to focus on as part of the weekly theme and
included storytelling and discussions about strengths in their planning.
A 10 year old pupil, Georgia told me about a really interesting idea they have in their Year 5 class:-
‘We have a ‘Kindness Catcher’ in our class. The kindness catcher is a box and every week we notice people who
have been shown the strength of Kindness. We write down their names on a piece of paper and how they have
been kind and then our teacher, Mrs Harris reads them out at the end of the week. It makes us into a very kind
class.’
The Festival of Easter
At the end of March we were delighted to welcome
back Belinda Catt, a ‘Celebrating Strengths’ consultant
to lead 2 very special whole school assemblies linked to
the Life of Jesus. At the start of the day the assembly
focussed on the ‘Road to Jerusalem’ and in the
afternoon the assembly ‘Celebrated the Resurrection’
by inviting the children to walk along a daffodil lined
‘road’, at the end of which each person was presented
with a chocolate egg. A lovely experience for us all,
with many memories to take away from it.
Photographs
It was difficult to select photographs showing Strengths
as we have so many. Here are a selection :-
Three F2 children showing their strengths of Friendship
and Teamwork as they play together
A group of Year 2 children showing the strength of
Creativity and Love of Learning during a recent
Passport Day
Year 3 / 4 children found out about the Festival of Holi
and the Strengths of Love and Forgiveness
So as we move through the year our whole school’s
aim is to continue to grow and develop in a
‘Celebrating Strengths’ community recognising our
own strengths and the strengths of others.
Girls’ Under 11 North Lincolnshire Cup
On Thursday 1st March, Westwoodside girls’ football
team took part in a tournament alongside other
Schools from North Lincolnshire. The team had
already won their competition at South Axholme
School and went on to also win this tournament. The
team played brilliantly and showed a fantastic attitude throughout all the games.
Well done to all our players who are now the champions of North Lincolnshire!

HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE
HERITAGE SOCIETY MEMBERS
MEETING - 8TH. MARCH 2012.
Welcoming members to the March meeting of the Society
the chairman apologised for the cancellation of February’s
Villages of the Isle talk by Mr. John Roberts and Mr George
Fiddler, this had been due to the poor weather conditions
and the talk would now take place at the Society’s July
meeting.
Members also heard of the death and funeral of past Society
member Mrs. Peggy Knowles.
Details of the Parish Council’s Diamond Jubilee
celebrations were made available and chairman Jackie Starr
outlined the Society’s own celebration plans, which were
an indoor ’Street Party’ 1950s style, members were invited
to bring along memorabilia of the period and to dress in an
appropriate style.
Introducing the evening’s speaker, the well known Mr. Geoff. Trinder, the chairman said that she was
not too sure what to expect from his title of ‘Wild Life of North Lincolnshire’.
Members were in fact, by means of a range of colour slides, given an introduction to the wild Flora and
Fauna of the local countryside.
Geoff. Deputy Chairman of the Lincolnshire Wild Life Trust explained that Lincolnshire possessed many
Reserves including beaches, salt marshes, heathland reedbed and grassland and that although some
appear to be natural landscapes they were man made and that when lands were acquired by the Trust
these were managed in order to return the habitat to its original condition.
Ranging through wild flowers, insects, snakes and both resident and migrant birds Geoff. explained how
populations of these could become almost extinct but often had the amazing ability to recover
especially where the right conditions were created.
Discussing the management and habitat of woodland that had been donated by well known Haxey
doctors Green and Dyson Geoff explained that this area was particularly favourable to wild life due to
it’s large amount of wetland.
Giving a thought provoking finale to his presentation Geoff. said that as we are all part of the natural
world that if we destroy the wild life we will destroy ourselves.
Mrs. Pam Johnson then gave the vote of thanks, refreshments were served and the meeting closed.
The next meeting of the Society will be on Thursday, 12th. April when Society member Mr. Malcolm
Dolby will give a talk on ’The Mayflower Pilgrims’.

Driving in the countryside Dear Readers, Driving on country roads requires an entirely different set of skills to driving in congested towns.
Rural roads are arguably the best place to exploit your driving abilities and get the most enjoyment out
of your driving. Traffic is usually light, you can use your observation skills, the roads are more interest-
ing and you’ll have to make well-judged overtakes.
The same level of planning and concentration is required but you’ll be dealing with an entirely different
set of hazards and sources of information.
You will need all the selective observation skills you have developed but also consider…
Taking extra care in case people or vehicles suddenly appear around corners, drive out of isolated field
entrances, farm drives etc, especially on 60mph roads.
Looking well ahead (over the hedges, where possible) to spot oncoming traffic in the distance, especially
trucks and tractors. Also look for potential overtaking zones and plan your arrival time to coincide with
a gap in the oncoming traffic.
Livestock in the fields might indicate that there may be mud on the road and you should also always be
prepared to encounter a flock of sheep around the next bend.
The line of hedges, trees, or telegraph poles often denotes the direction the road may take around the
next bend. Use this to your advantage.
Don’t swerve uncontrollably if an animal or bird darts out in front of you. Better a broken fog light or
dented bumper than a total loss of control and a
serious accident.
Holes in hedges are often found on particularly
sharp or tightening bends, and are usually created
by some unfortunate driver who has overshot
the corner and gone straight on. Treat them as a
reminder to take care and to keep control of
your speed.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West
Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School
News
As well as all of the core curriculum studies linked to Maths and Literacy this term, we have had some diverse
and exciting learning experiences across both schools.
As part of our schools’ aim to introduce the children to a range of cultures over the Primary years, we invited
Culture Connect in for a Maasai Experience. It proved to be an interesting and colourful experience that
provided the children with opportunities to learn about the Maasai culture through dressing up in costume,
making cultural crafts, tasting delicious African food, hearing exciting eye-witness stories, exploring symbolic
artefacts and participating in lively music, chants and dance. Workshop leader Valerie Taiwo talked to the
children about the different East African countries and how their culture was different to our own. The children
dressed up as Maasai men and women and also performed traditional Maasai Tribe Dances. In the afternoon, the
children designed Maasai shields, necklaces and dyed traditional kikoy fabrics to produce blue, white and red
patterns.
Following this, there were some treats in store for all pupils and staff who have an interest in things ‘creepy
crawly, slithery and slimy’ as a mobile safari visited West Butterwick school on February 21st. The children were
introduced to a range of exotic creatures – molluscs, reptiles, mammals and insects from around the world.
Children handled giant African Land Snails, a Royal Python, a large Dragon Lizard and many more fascinating
creatures. This day also encouraged the children to consider the science of why their particular habitats suited
the animals’ characteristics, as well as broadening their knowledge of world geography. The snakes and Dragon
Lizard were most popular!
Bringing the learning back to a ‘local’ level, pupils at Owston Ferry were visited by three members of the village’s
Sports Club – Ian Woodcock, Steve Lilly and Ged Rule. The children had been invited to submit their design
ideas for a new Sports Club Sign and this resulted in one overall winner (Charlotte Thornton age 8) as well as
runners-up ; Abigail Platt, Jack Foreman, Callum Gallagher, Luke Longhorn, Owen Woodcock and Hannah
Thornton. The winners were presented with gift vouchers, but the best prize of all was seeing Charlotte’s
striking design transferred on to the actual large Club Sign which will be on permanent display in the village!
Last Autumn Term, we were very pleased to be able to take part in the historical project linked to the
repositioning of the baptismal font at St Andrew’s Church in Epworth. Over the last two terms, Junior pupils
made a series of line drawings depicting aspects of local knowledge and features. A number of our children’s tiles
have been selected for the Heritage Pavement to be created as part of this project. The tiles were inspired by
‘the uniqueness of the Isle of Axholme’. Congratulations to Sam Smith, Saskia Heighington, Thomas Latham, Ben
Carby, Anna Layton, Holly Lindley, Harry Watts, Ellie Hughes, Jasmine Watson, Lily Todd and Macaulay Scott
whose tiles were chosen from both St Martin’s and West Butterwick. The children have made an important and
memorable contribution to the living history of St Andrew’s and our locality – we hope that these wonderful tiles
last for hundreds of years to come!
On Monday 5th March, St Martin’s school welcomed two very important guests – the Mayor and Mayoress of
North Lincolnshire. This visit was in connection with
the hard work undertaken by the School Council and
the pupils on the ‘Litter Busting’ work. The school is
now applying for its Silver Eco Schools Award and we
are then looking forward to ‘going for gold’. The Mayor
and Mayoress presented the prizes for our ‘Design a
Sculpture’ from recycled rubbish competition, as
organised by the School Council. Overall winner was
Ellie Wilkinson with her wonderful elephant watering
can made up of an old milk carton and some cardboard
tubes. We had a range of imaginative entries. One, a
recycling robot design, even contained an electrical
circuit so that its mouth and eyes lit up when its nose
was pressed! Many thanks to Councillor Jan Williams of
Owston Ferry Parish Council who donated the gift
vouchers for prizes. All runners-up received Easter
Eggs, so everyone was a winner! It was a thoroughly
enjoyable and thought provoking project that enabled us to see rubbish in a different light!

. Isle of Axholme B.P. Scout Group
From Tots to Teens, the scouting experiences help youngsters to developed self-confidence and learn
many skills. The 1st Isle of Axholme group is part of the Baden Powell Scout association
(www.traditionalscouting.co.uk/) and is based in Westwoodside village hall.
The Scouting journey starts as children approach their 6th birthday, when they can join the Beaver Col-
ony and continues through to their late teens as they progress through Wolf Cubs, Scouts and Senior
Scouts.
The Beavers meet at 6pm. each Tuesday evening in term time and it is our objective to develop self confi-
dence and life skills with a programme of activities, based in the Westwoodside Village Hall and, as impor-
tantly, out in the surrounding countryside. The local woods, turbarys and peat moors provide an exciting,
yet safe, environment for the youngsters.
In this last year, amongst many other activities,
they have explored the Lindholme peat moors.
They learnt all about rearing beef cattle and
sheep with a visit to Gill and David Carr’s
herd. In the Autumn we had a BBQ night in a
local wood where they all cooked their own
suppers.
Each July we hold our annual “Beavers and
Parent” camp in an oak wood near Caistor.
Last year the weather was perfect, and every-
one enjoyed exploring the local woods, a camp fire and lots and lots of good food.
We do have a few vacancies for the start of the summer school term. To learn more about joining this

1 International B414, 2 countries, 6 blokes, 7 days, 12 MPH, 600 miles, £10,000 target!
On Saturday 30th June 2012 a group including myself and 3 sons, James,
Alastair and Joshua , will depart from our home village of Wroot in
North Lincolnshire for the sunnier climes of Western France driving in
relay a vintage 1964 International B414 tractor!
Our destination is an old Farmhouse close to the village of Breuil Bernard near to the small town of
Moncoutant in the department of the Deux Sevre, Western France. We bought the old place a few years
ago and decided in due course to emigrate and settle there. James (my eldest) decided that to successfully
make the transition and settle in Breuil Bernard I would need an old tractor. Some men take up golf, some
men take up fishing apparently I am taking up old tractors!
The event is set to commence on Saturday 30th June in harness with Marie Curie Cancer Care. Cancer
has no geographical boundaries and does not stop at the English Channel. Last year our French friends
Alain and Monique Fievre lost a member of their family, and my sons lost their Uncle Brian to cancer
whilst my sister-in-law is desperately fighting the ravages of liver cancer Sadly the problem is around us all.
The event will be preceded the week before when the tractor will lead a parade at the Lincolnshire Show,
in conjunction with the Lincolnshire Young Farmers Club. The channel crossing will take place early in the
morning Wednesday 4th July from Weymouth to St Malo via a 5 hour stop in Guernsey.
Marie Curie is a registered charity no 207994 (England & Wales), SCO38731 (Scotland). Marie Curie
