Information from the President:
Dear fellow Congregants,
As the New Year 5777 arrives, so are many new things happening at
Congregation Agudath Achim. We are beginning to renovate and modernize
our office complex as this is written, we are offering more activities to entice
young families and their children, our Backpack Buddies program is
beginning its eighth year with tremendous support and potential for growth,
our lay-leadership services are beginning to catch on with our members, and
our Rabbi search committee will begin the search process again in the early
part of winter.
Our different adult education programs continue to draw
attendees, and Shalom School now has 67 children enrolled, about 25% are
from AA, and it has seen an upgrade in computer and audio-visual teaching
tools.
Just a reminder, our doors are always open to you so please come in and take
part.
Elise and I wish everyone a L'Shana Tovah and nothing but sweetness and
goodness to each of you for the new year.
See you in Shul
Victor Shernoff

Orange Juice & Cookies for Break the Fast Thank You to Helene & Jack Streicher and Joan Pam for donating the cookies, and also to Nancy & Bobby Isaacson
for providing the Orange Juice.
Operation Isaiah This is my chosen fast…share your bread with the hungry, take the homeless into your home, clothed the naked when
you see him, do not turn away from the people in need (Isaiah 58:6-7).
Sunday, October 2nd begins the celebration of the Jewish Holidays. This was also the start of the annual food drive,
Operation Isaiah which ends on Friday, October 28th. We ask each congregant to bring a minimum of one pound of
food to the synagogue for distribution to the hungry through the Second Harvest Food Bank. With 100% participa-
tion, we would together, as an act of Tzedekah, give no less than 600lbs of food to feed those less fortunate. Drop
off barrels will be located in Congregation Agudath Achim, along with 4 other locations
(The JEA, Congregation Mickve Israel, Congregation B’nai Birth Jacob and Rambam Day School).
The flowers in the planter boxes on the Bimah for Rosh Hashanah were donated by
Sheryl and Stavie Kreh, Sidney & Marissa Karp & Arnold & Chrissie Karp
in loving memory of their parents, Annette & Melvin Karp, Esther & Max Kreh, Eric Nathan Karp,
Clara & Abe Harris, Fannie Harris, Herschel & Barbara Harris, Julius & Jay Kaminsky,
Abe & Annie Karp, Hilda Weinstein, and Rabbi Jerry Potack.

A magic moment in children’s eyes.
Not a holiday in itself but Tashlich is a ritual that is a big favorite with little ones: how not! We go on
a field trip and we come back after we got rid of the equivalent of a year full of sins. This
tradition appears around the 15 century and was originally intended to be held by a body of water
containing fishes. One of the symbols behind the ritual was for us to be judge by the eye of god the
same way a fisherman judges the fish he just caught: to be released or to die. Several centuries later,
we have pushed the symbolism a step further: we casting our sins away, usually in the form of
breadcrumb that we throw in the river or the sea, with the hope of being granted a fresh start.
For young children, the symbolic act of throwing away our sins brings that message home in a
dramatic yet very concrete manner: to think about all the things they have done wrong that past year,
get more or less a breadcrumb for each item on that mental list and throw those crumbs away during
Tashlich. to come out with a blank slate and all this, while feeding the fish. (Parents, be ready to
answer the typical “What happen to the fish who are eating all those sins?”). This is of course of a
very simplified version of what Tashlich is meant to be but it is a wonderful opportunity to demon-
strate forgiveness to younger ones. Families with small children will enjoy reading together the
related story “New Year at the Pier” by April Alperin.
As we celebrating Rosh Hashanah, we, at Shalom School have spent the summer working on making
our new academic year even better. We learned on how to teach in a project base learning
methodology meaning, our lessons are now more interactive and always centered around one bigger
project matching the grade and the curriculum. That also means that we will be incorporated art and
technology in a more blended manner. Many of our classroom have been equipped with big screen
TVs with computer like capability that will open many new possibilities: we can access the online
components of our curriculum, we can show our students short videos or do team research on any
given topic, but also we can play various games while reviewing and testing the students’ knowledge
in a really fun atmosphere.
We may not feed the fish at Shalom School but we are definitely aiming to make Jewish education at
least as exciting!
Wishing you Shanah Tovah Umetukah, a sweet and happy new year!
Eva Locker, Principal.
