Hazardous Area Application Guide

Areas are defined as hazardous where a danger of explosion exists owing to the presence, or partial presence of a potentially explosive atmosphere resulting from the processes or activity undertaken in the immediate or surrounding area.

An explosive atmosphere occurs as a result of a mixture of inflammable materials (such as gas, vapours or dust) with air in sufficient proportions as to be able to cause an explosion when ignited by excessive temperature, electrical arc, spark or other ignition source.

Some lighting applications liable to be classed as hazardous areas are:

•cleaningproductindustries•pharmaceuticalindustries•distilleries•paintandvarnishmanufacturers•oilrefineries

Luminaires in hazardous areasIn order to select the correct luminaire for use in a particular hazardous atmosphere the following information is necessary:

•Theclassificationofthehazardous area (i.e. Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2)

•Theignitiontemperatureofthegas, vapour, solid or dust (i.e. ‘T’ class)

•Thegasgroup•Otherenvironmentalissues

should also be studied such as the equipment ingress protection required plus any possible chemical or mechanical attack to the luminaire integrity.

Hazardous area classificationThe European code of practice EN60079 calls for all potentially explosive areas to be classified according to the probability of a flammable atmosphere occurring in order that the appropriate type of protected electrical equipment is installed. The code of practice gives specific guidance as to which type of protected equipment may be installed in which zones.

Area classification is only intended to assist in the selection of electrical equipment – it is not concerned with the toxic risk which may be associated with the flammable materials, or with the possible exposure of personnel to the vapours.

Zone 0 (gases) Zone 20 (dusts)Where an explosive mixture is continuously present or present for long periods (typically 1,000 hours or more per year).

Zone 1 (gases) Zone 21 (dusts)Where an explosive mixture is present in normal operation (typically between 10 and 1,000 hours per year).

Zone 2 (gases) Zone 22 (dusts)Where an explosive air mixture is present in abnormal conditions only for short periods (typically less than 10 hours per year).

Hazardous area luminaires are used for a wide range of applications

Temperature classificationThe temperature classification of a given gas is the temperature above which an appropriate mixture of that gas with air. It is critical that the maximum surface temperature of any equipment which may come into contact with the gas/air does not exceed the ignition temperature of the mixture.

The temperature class of ‘T Rating’ is normally based on temperature of -20ºC to +40ºC.

Gas GroupsThe explosive gases, vapours and mists present in the atmosphere are classified or grouped into temperature classes and gas groups according to various properties such as ignition temperature, the energy required to ignite the mixture, the energy produced by an explosion, flame transmission capability etc.

Under CENELEC EN50014 and IEC79-12 standards explosive gas/air mixtures are placed in the following groups:

IECGroup

RepresentativeGas

I Methane(undergroundmining)

IIA Propane

IIB Ethylene

IIC Acetylene

Types of protectionThere are established engineering concepts recognised by the IEC for the design of electrical equipment for hazardous area applications. These engineering concepts are the basis of protection against the risk of fire or explosion.

Each concept is identified by a protection symbol. The prefix ‘Ex’ in the symbol denotes a national standard.
