TACTILE TILESKitchen islands can often lack texture dueto the need for smooth and cleanablesurfaces, so 3D tiles on the sides can bean ideal pairing. However there are someconsiderations, as Emily Cunnane, ofinterior agency InSpace, explains. “By theirnature, 3D tiles are deeper and thereforecan make a space feel smaller, they alsocost more per tile and cost more to lay.”Usually 3D tiles are ceramic as it’s difficultto create shapes in porcelain, and thismeans they are generally easier to fix,cut and drill through. The most importantthing? “Make sure your tiler is detailoriented, and that there is a proper planin place for the laying of the tiles.” Thisincludes direction of tiles, as well as ratioof 3D versus flat tiles (flat tiles are neededaround sockets) as “there is more scopefor the final look to be lost in translationbetween client and contractor”. inspace.ie

QUIRKYCHARACTERSThis fun mural in Astrid’s bedroom wascreated by hand by Ciara’s sister-in-law, Hesper. Amazingly, the wholedesign was drawn onto the wall with justSharpie permanent markers, so if you’rea dab hand at drawing, you don’t needcomplicated tools to recreate it. Hespersketched out her ideas on paper first, andthen once she was happy, got drawingon the wall. Ciara toyed with the ideaof colouring in it, but decided to leave itmonochrome, and add colour to the wallwith framed prints instead. If you’re lessconfident about your artistic skills, youcan still achieve this look by projectingan image onto your wall, tracing overit with pencil, and finishing with eitherpaint or marker. Alternatively, removablewall stickers are now widely available, check out Etsy for an endless number ofdesigns. @hesperdoodle
