Perfection as Standard

The CompanyFor over half a century, the name Knick has been a by-word for exceptional quality in the manufacture of electronic measuring devices. Back in 1945, company founder Dipl.-Ing Ulrich Knick began manufacturing highly accurate zero-pointstabilized DC amplifiers in Berlin, laying the foundation stone for the modules product range. These amplifiers made it possible to produce reliable and precise pH measuring devices whose zero point did not have to be readjusted every day. Thanks to integrated operational amplifiers, modern pH transmitters no longer have offset problems today. By contrast, electromagnetic interference of the measuring signal and the dynamic range of signal processing create new challenges, especially in low-power components. Knick analyzers are known for their reliability, stability, precision, and unique warranty services, all with optimal functionality. Completely new sensor monitoring functions such as information on the expected remaining sensor lifetime, new operating concepts with functional colored backlighting, and 2-wire fed, intrinsically safe transmitters with a previously unknown range of functions are just some examples of the latest process analytics. Knick is also the only supply of explosion-protected portable meters for pH, oxygen, and conductivity.

Alongside the process analytics business area, Knick develops and distributes a broad range of interface modules for industrial analog signal processing, transmitters for temperatures, and digital indicators for analog signals. Great emphasis is placed on functional safety and explosion protection, where the firm has made a name for itself with its high level of expertise.

Traditionally Innovative Today, company policy still focuses on a high technical level and a highly innovative orientation. Every fourth employee works in Research and Development. A large number of patents and licensing agreements are the result. The strategy of achieving business success with optimal technical solutions for demanding tasks has proven itself beyond doubt and also promises stability and independence with solid growth in the future. The economic independence of the company allows for the far-sighted work of the development department focused on innovation and sustainability. Although this is necessary to create and manufacture products and systems of ever increasing complexity today, it can by no means be taken for granted. As the result of this exemplary commitment, Knick will continue to offer its customers products perfectly suited to their particular tasks and problems and safeguard investment security for many years.

The Point of MeasurementIn analytical measurement loops consisting of a sensor, fitting, and process analyzer (transmitter), the application is crucial to the choice of individual components. The measurement problem can rarely be reduced to the transmitter alone, but usually comes down to understanding the complete interplay between the individual elements of the point of measurement. By confronting the problems directly where they arise, Knick has been able to gain significant additional knowledge from the close interaction of customer know-how and the experience and expertise of its own employees. Some years ago, to complement Knicks more than sixty years of expert knowledge of circuit technology and pH electrodes, the company acquired the Hagen-based specialists Regnault, known for their ultrapure-water applications with steel fittings and conductivity sensors, and integrated its products within its own range. In its usual way, Knick began by addressing the most complicated applications with the greatest challenges, starting where existing fittings fail. This required a huge investment in terms of time and materials and resulted in the set-up of mechanical production centers of the highest standard.

Process SensorsSensors as the direct interface to the process must be perfectly matched to the chemistry of the measured medium and to the prevailing pressure and temperature conditions. These essential requirements for error-free, low-maintenance, and reliable recording of process parameters are perfectly met by the new, upgraded range of Knick sensors. This serves a wide range of different applications: pH sensors with applicationspecific properties pH sensors from Knick are fitted with integrated temperature detectors. Modern contactless sensors are conected using the Memosens standard, analog sensors use the multi-pin Variopin (VP) cap connector. Most of the pH sensors offered by Knick are available not only in the standard length of 120 mm but also in 225 mm length for use in the Unical 9000 and Uniclean 900 automatic cleaning and calibration systems. Retractable fittings with ideal functionality for this purpose are Ceramat and SensoGate. Conductivity sensors for the complete measuring range The conductivity of aqueous media covers a range of more than eight decades, starting with ultrapure water with 0.055 S/cm and going as far as fully dissociated acids or bases with more than 1,000 mS/cm. The applications for conductivity measOxygen sensors with low maintenance effort Sensors from Knick for measuring dissolved oxygen are characterized by a high level of process safety. The robust design using durable materials and the modular structure of the sensors lead to a high level of reliability and low maintenance. As a module, the steel-mesh-reinforced, PTFEcoated membrane can be replaced quickly and easily, as can the electrode system with its complete inner body. The sensors offer a high resolution of 6 ppb. With a version for trace measurement, a value of 0.1 ppb can be achieved, while its insensitivity to high CO2 partial pressures also makes it outstandingly suited to the beverage industry.

urement vary accordingly: from checking the purity of feed water in power plants to measuring highly concentrated electrolyte solutions and concentrated sulfuric acid. Ideally, these very different requirements can only be fulfilled by different sensors, which are adapted to the application-specific conditions by means of special properties. Knick offers the whole range of sensor technologies for this: sensors that measure with two or four electrodes, or electrodeless on the inductive principle. All sensors are equipped with a temperature probe for automatic temperature compensation of the conductivity level.

Excursus

Process FittingsThere is a basic distinction between static fittings and retractable fittings. The static fittings are available as flow-through fittings, generally for by-pass or inline applications directly within the process flow, and as immersion fittings for measurements in basins, tanks, or channels. Retractable fittings better described from a functional point of view as sensor lock-gates can be used to remove and service a sensor under process conditions. This is done in either manual or pneumatic mode. This can be linked with an automatic cleaning and/or calibration function. Because of the variety of production conditions, the requirements for a fitting are as diverse as they are for a sensor. Pressure and temperature, the choice of materials and above all the type and symmetry of the installation and the desired functionality, are determined by the fitting. Electro-pneumatic controllers Ideally matched to the sensor lock-gates, the Unical 9000 and Uniclean 900 controllers provide for perfect fully automated interplay in a complete measuring station. Highly accurate measurements can then be taken, even under difficult process conditions such as high pressure, high temperatures, and high levels of impurities. When measuring in aggressive media or at high process temperatures, the sensor rests in the calibration chamber and is only briefly moved into the process for measurement. This method decisively increases the sensor life.

On the Subject of Hazardous ApplicationsFor more than 50 years, Knick has developed and produced hazardousarea equipment with the intrinsic safety type i protection preferred by the chemical industry. The product range of approved equipment includes standard-signal isolators, repeater power supplies and temperature transmitters as well as devices for liquid analysis, systems for fully automated process analysis and retractable fittings. The approvals are in line with IECEx standards, ATEX rules and, for North America, UL, FM, and CSA, as well as further regional standards. The intrinsic safety type of protection i is based on the limitation of voltages and currents or power outputs in order to reliably avoid explosive sparking or impermissible heating. The maximum permissible values were determined in comprehensive test series carried out by the German PTB and other institutes and were first specified in according standards. The European standards EN 60079, EN 61241, and EN 13463 currently serve as a basis for the development of explosion-protected equipment. The latest guidelines and regulations on the subject of explosion protection are always promptly implemented by Knick and continuously integrated into the development of equipment.

Explosion Protection Explosion protection has developed dynamically in recent years; this will continue in the future. A great deal of work in this respect has been and is being done by the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC, which also developed the series of standards IEC 60079 Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres and IEC 61241 Electrical apparatus for use in the presence of combustible dust, which now serve as the global basis of national standards. In Europe, the 94/9/EC directive requires comprehensive explosion protection for electrical and nonelectrical equipment. This requirement was carried out when the above IEC standards became EN standards further complemented by EN 13463 Non-electrical apparatus for use in hazardous locations. A range of changes have been added to the current bodies of standards; the following presents just a few examples of these: intrinsic safety i, introduction of type of protection ic in addition to ia, ib encapsulation m, division into types of protection ma, mb, mc introduction of Group III for dust atmospheres at risk of explosion, subdivided into IIIA, IIIB, IIIC introduction of information on EPL (Equipment Protection Level) Ga, Gb, Gc for gas and Da, Db, Dc for dust Directive 94/9/EC also requires that the latest technical level of knowledge, which is constantly changing, must be used promptly and as far as possible. The assumption here is that the latest standards also reflect the latest technology. Equipment must therefore be regularly adapted to the latest body of standards. The standards themselves are usually reviewed every 3 to 5 years. As every device is subject to several standards which naturally cannot all be superseded at the same time, the manufacturers must constantly work on revising their devices. This can mean that the identifier, the area of application, or the electrical data change. For this reason, users should check on every repeat order whether the relevant devices still meet their requirements. Protection of existing rights continues to apply for existing systems and devices used within them.

Explosion Protection

Global Developments Explosion protection continues to develop not just within the European Union but also on a global scale. Standardization of norms is seen as a particularly relevant factor here, making approvals valid in many countries. The desired ideal condition is a single, globally applicable approval. A system like this does exist, building on the IEC norms, and is generally known as the IECEx system. Although many countries cooperate on this system, the IECEx approvals themselves are still only accepted by a few nations. However, in countries which do not recognize the IECEx approvals, national approvals on the basis of the IECEx approvals are possible. As a result, electrical equipment is increasingly first receiving an IECEx Certificate of Conformity (IECEx CoC) approval as per the IECEx standard. On the basis of this, approvals for the ATEX region, North America, Asia etc. are then carried out (IECEx CoC are available at www.iecex.com). The IECEx standards are established on a zone system which will become the norm throughout the world. The division system common in the U.S. and Canada will nevertheless remain in force for a while especially in the U.S., where new plants may still be built on this system. Both systems the zone and the division system have to date been used on a mutually exclusive basis in the U.S. and Canada; a mixture is not permissible.

Hazardous-area Quality Assurance Systems Quality assurance systems for hazardous areas are required by the various approval systems / offices for the development and/or manufacture of hazardous-area devices. Compliance with the relevant standards is checked in regular audits. For example, the audits for IECEx and ATEX take place every three years, with an interim audit after half this time in each case. FM, CSA, and UL audit the parent plant and production sites every three months.

Contactless. Digital. MEMOSENS.

The Industry Standard for SensorsInductive connection for contactless energy and data transmission The inductive Memosens connector system offers contactless energy and data transmission between electrochemical sensors and process analyzers. The built-in intelligence allows sensor-related data close to the process to be saved and evaluated. In late 2008, the two companies Endress + Hauser and Knick agreed to work closely together in the development of and general cooperation on contactless and digital sensor technology. The result of this cooperation is Memosens (logo). A new generation with a greatly expanded range of functions is currently in the final stage of development. The new Memosens generation will display significantly enhanced predictive diagnostics, record sensor history, and reliably measure glass and reference impedances. Together with all common fieldbuses, Memosens can be used with all process control and asset management systems. In addition to digital pH measurement, Memosens technology is available for ORP, conductivity and oxygen parameters. As an open standard, Memosens is supported by many other manufacturers.

Advantages of Memosens at a Glance up to 40 % longer lifetime of sensors reduction in process downtimes with simple sensor replacement fewer calibration cycles thanks to longer sensor life more precise process management with exact calibration in the laboratory under reproducible conditions predictive maintenance as an integrated element of the sensor technology improved asset management

Intelligent pH Sensors With analog pH measuring points, humidity can cause faults and thus failure of the measuring point. Problems like these are effectively rectified by the contactless, inductive data transfer of Memosens technology. In outdoor areas, impurities20

in the plug connector present no measurement problems with digital Memosens pH sensors. Stresses on the pH sensor are logged and can be used for preventive maintenance. Memosens sensors can be precalibrated in the lab under optimal

conditions and then only need to be replaced on site. As a result, there is no need for calibration in dirty or dangerous conditions and measuring points which are difficult to access no longer present a problem.

Contacting Conductivity Sensors Memosens technology is also used for contacting conductivity sensors. The contactless and digital data transfer reduces the influence of cable capacitance, cable resistance, or contacts susceptible to corrosion. In addition, the fully galvanic decoupling of analyzer and sensor element simplifies wiring. Here, the corresponding transmitters in the Stratos Pro series or the Protos measuring systems complete the Memosens conductivity measuring point. Of course, the relevant measurement and process data, such as minimum and maximum conductivity value and the number of cleaning and sterilization cycles, are also stored in conductivity sensors with Memosens technology.

Oxygen Measurement Using Memosens oxygen sensors, the measured value is also digitized directly in the sensor and can be transmitted as an interference-free digital signal to the analyzer and processed further there. When a sensor is replaced, the last sensorspecific data are loaded onto the analyzer and operation promptly continues. The oxygen sensors can also be calibrated locally in the laboratory or workshop and then commissioned at short notice at the relevant installation point without further work. In addition to standard data such as sensor ID, various operating data are recorded and made available for asset management (number of calibrations, operating hours taking account of the different process conditions, SIP cycles, and electrolyte stress).

A Quantum Leap in Technology: SensoGateThe unique modular system from Knick for innovative manual and pneumatic retractable fittings. Also ideal for hygienic applications. Manual versions, variants for use with simple commercial control units, or fully automated quality solutions the flexible sensor lock-gates in the SensoGate series offer a multitude of advantages and enable swift amortization through considerable time and cost savings. All SensoGate fittings are also available as EHEDG-certified hygienic versions and as versions for hazardous locations (marking: II 1 GD c II).

SensoGate for gel sensors

SensoGate for liquid-filled sensors

Design Innovations More than a dozen patent registrations speak for themselves with the SensoGate series of sensor lockgates, Knick succeeded in markedly improving the previously practiced principle of the push rod mechanism. The results are as pioneering as they are customer-friendly: over seventy percent time savings in initial installation and replacement of wearing parts compared to other devices. The benefits of genuine and unique modularity are seen here: for example, the immersion tube can be replaced in a single movement without removing the entire fitting. The drive unit with the immersion tube can be disconnected from the calibration chamber and the process adaptation by loosening a single coupling nut.

Exemplary Modular Design The sophisticated design reduces stress on seals and ensures an increased service life. Divided calibration chambers enable especially easy replacement of the process seal. Complete modularity simplifies the installation and allows replacing different components such as the drive or the immersion tube without disassembling the unit. You can easily switch to other types of electrodes, other process adaptations or immersion depths. Virtually all maintenance work is easily done on the site. The sensor lock-gates, sophisticated down to the smallest detail, allow for cleaning and calibration of the sensor without interrupting the process. A quick exchange during the running process can be done without difficulty.

A Question of Material Today, conventional retractable fittings are available in the widest range of materials: PP, PEEK, PVC, PP, steel, Hastelloy, titanium etc. Plastics frequently provide advantages to resist chemical stresses, but these have been out-weighed to some extent by the disadvantages of the designs: They are thermally instable, tend to swell and therefore do not have enough dimensional stability. In particular, immersion tubes made of plastic are greatly limited in terms of their application, cannot move after swelling and often malfunction at an early stage.

Simple replacement in no time at all: PEEK, PVDF, PP, stainless steel, Hastelloy

Processed Plastics By contrast, the plastic versions of the SensoGate are reinforced with carbon fiber. In addition to the chemical resistance of the reinforced PEEK, PVDF, or PP, the calibration chamber and the immersion tube retain their shape, even when exposed to higher temperatures. The immersion tubes made of carbonfiber-reinforced plastic are injectionmolded rather than cut so as to avoid tool marks. The advantage of this method is that all the fibers remain covered by the surface. Cutting such fiber-reinforced plastics on a lathe would expose fibers and the resulting surface would be too rough for the O-rings to slide over.

Attractive in Every Way The result of Knicks injection-molding is a straight pipe with a cohesive surface of excellent quality. The direct benefit for the customer is the minimal O-ring wear and the correspondingly long service life of the gaskets. At the same time these materials can also be used at a great cost advantage where until now serious chemical stress combined with high pressures and temperatures have required extremely expensive materials such as Hastelloy. In addition to the financial aspect, a further major advantage are the carbon fiber reinforced plastics used by Knick with thermal expansion characteristics similar to those of steel. There are thus no longer any pressure restrictions on the permissible temperature range, due to the division into pressurized components made of steel and process-wetted materials made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The pressure stability is the same at room temperature as it is at 120 C/140 C. Furthermore, the conductivity of plastic carbon-fiber-reinforced components especially suit the use of SensoGate in hazardous areas. The probe guard made of conductive plastic prevents the electrodes from building up electrostatic charge and, in turn, distorting the measurements.

Process Adaptation SensoGate retractable fittings can be adapted to various processes with a steel flange 1.4571 DN 32 to DN 100, dairy-pipe screw joint DN 50 to DN 100, ANSI 316 1 1/2; to 3; flange and Ingold sockets, or hygienic process connections. Other special adaptations such as for flow cells are possible.

SensoGate HSafe Separation and Still Hygienic SensoGate H sensor lock-gates are the only EHEDG-certified retractable fittings on the market which combine hygiene and safe separation from the process. When sensor lock-gates are used in processes in the pharmaceutical and food industries, with their high hygienic requirements, further demands arise with regard to sterilizability. Unlike other conventional fittings on the market, not only the process side but also the calibration chamber has been EHEDG-certified in the SensoGate. This means that its suitability for unrestricted use in pharmaceutical and food applications has been attested. This also allows validation in FDA-regulated production processes.

Setting the Seal Previously, the combination of demands for a hygienic-compliant fitting and safe disconnection of the calibration chamber from the process was considered unfeasible. While nonhygienic process fittings frequently feature two or even three process seals for reasons of safety, this was previously not possible for hygienic lock-gates as the space between the seals cannot be rinsed and is therefore not hygienic. However, the consequences of the sealing principle are insufficient safety and a high level of wear to the seal. During movement of the lock-gate, the connection from the process to the inlet and outlet of the fitting is open; the risk of recontamination to the process is consequently high. In contrast to this, this presents no problems for the SensoGate. The new, patented lock-gate principle for the first time allowed us to create a hygienically certified retractable fitting safely cut off from the process during all movement.

Best Cleaning Results The process-side O-ring gasket which fits flush and free of dead spots in the process adaptation can be rinsed by not only the process but also from the interior of the fitting. A special molding on the inner side ensures that the flow of rinse and sterilization medium is directed toward the interior of the gasket. This means that it is possible to clean the interior of the process connection and the exterior of the immersion tube all the way down to the process seal. Three high pressure nozzles arranged tangentially on the sensor ensure an optimal cleaning effect, triggering a cyclone circumflowing the sensor and stripping away impurities at high speed. The cleaning medium or hot steam for sterilization are supplied directly at the media connection, through an integrated check valve decoupled from the regular media connections of the multi-plug. This valve also has no dead spots and is easily accessible.

Extended Immersion Depths by Offsetting the Process Adaptation The hygience SensoGate variants also enable immersion depths not achievable with conventional hygienic fittings. As only the part of the immersion tube may be inserted into the process which was previously sterilized in the calibration chamber, immersion depths of more than 20 to 26 mm were formerly a problem. By contrast, immersion depths of 32 mm or 57 mm can be selected with SensoGate H fittings. As a result, 220 % of previously possible immersion depths is in future available for installation in flow cells and especially for installations in which every millimeter counts, e.g. in double walled tanks. This is achieved solely due to an adjustment of the process adaptation on the calibration chamber, while the rest of the structure remains the same. Once the sensor is inserted into the process, the immersion tube and calibration chamber can also be cleaned in this position down to the process seal and, where required, sterilized. For the first time, contamination from the rinsing chamber into the process while moving can be safely prevented with this solution, even after long measuring intervals. Retrofitting is also possible.

Stratos ProPioneering process analytics for pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen: 2-wire and 4-wire devices with unique color-guided user prompting on backlit widescreen display. Thanks to innovative enclosure technology, the process control devices in the Stratos series are ideally suited for use even under harsh conditions. They allow connection of all common analog sensors as well as digital ISM sensors and contactless digital sensors such as Memosens.

Intuitive Color System and Clear Display The Stratos series are currently the only process analyzers in their price and performance class to feature a widescreen LC display, whose highcontrast image with memorable and self-explanatory pictograms guide the user through the applications. To increase legibility, the text is not presented in jumping lines but as a scrolling ticker line. With the corresponding display backlighting, the user intuitively knows which operating mode the device is currently in.

Setting the Standard In normal measuring mode, the display is backlit white, displays in information mode appear in green, and the diagnostic menu is turquoise. HOLD mode, when the device is calibrating, for example, is signaled by an orange display. The display of this state is particularly important when the device is connected to a process control system and may not supply any invalid output values. Diagnostic messages such as required maintenance or sensor wear are shown in magenta. The operator is made aware of an alarm message by a bright red; if the display is flashing red, this indicates invalid input.

Safety in Operation In the Stratos Pro series, Knick has fully subjected design to the needs of safety. As investigations in real-world environments have shown that operator errors on analyzing devices lead to long downtimes, the developers set themselves the target of designing a device which can be operated intuitively and safely. This was achieved with color-coded operator guidance which signals the current operation status to the user with various color backlighting states on the display.

Shatter-Proof and Corrosion-Resistance Enclosure The extremely robust and corrosionresistant plastic enclosure of the Stratos Pro series is protected to IP67 and can be used even in harsh environments and in the process industry. The scratch-proof and UVresistant display window is made of hardened, 3-mm thick safety glass and is connected directly to the plastic enclosure during the molding process. The specially sealed elastomeric control keys are hardly protuding from the smooth front, making it insensitive to mechanical damage. All the devices electronics are completely encapsulated in the door module: there are no exposed PCBs.

Sophisticated Design The large rear unit can be preinstalled separately and contains no electronics. It is fully available as a terminal compartment. A door contact switch records unauthorized opening of the enclosure and in such cases triggers an entry in the logbook a function absolutely necessary for audit trails as per 21 CFR Part 11 in pharmaceutical processes. The extremely low selfheating of the Stratos Pro not least ensures an extremely long service life.

International Approvals The intrinsically safe models are designed for operation in hazardous locations of Zone 1/Class 1 Division 1 (with sensor in Zone 0). Operation in hazardous locations from 20 C to +65 C is possible. The devices are designed for gas and dust explosion protection (G/D) and can naturally also be used outdoors (type 4 enclosure, UV resistant).

For Analog and Digital Sensors The innovative wiring technology of the Stratos Pro enables operation of all standard sensors. The device supports both conventional analog sensors as well as digital or contactless digital sensors of the new MEMOSENS standard.

Function Superiority From the wireless service interface to the complete HART communication system, the Stratos Pro series offers a wide range of reliable functions for 4- and 2-wire devices. The devices34

can be used in multidrop mode and are certified for the handheld and asset management systems of the leading manufacturers.

Unrivaled wiring technology ensures low self-heating and an extremely long service life.
