1 Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 HDMI Frame Generator OverviewThe HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) Frame Generator software (short: “Frame Generator” or “software”) is astand-alone software utility. It provides semi-automatic control of different Keysight Technologies (formerly AgilentTechnologies) HDMI TMDS (Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling) Signal Generator configurations for physical layertests. It is a flexible tool for trouble-shooting and debugging. The Frame Generator complements the full Test AutomationSoftware (Keysight N5990A opt. 010, 150, 151 and 250, depending on the configuration), which provides automatedphysical layer compliance tests and device characterization. It allows a wide range of HDMI video formats to be generatedand provides control over parameters such as color depth and color code. It comprises jitter insertion for jitter tolerancetests, to set the skew and other key parameters. The software runs on a standard Windows XP or Windows 7 PC andcontrols the hardware test resources through appropriate interfaces such as LAN (Local Area Network).

The HDMI Frame Generator software is able to drive the following Keysight HDMI TMDS Signal Generator configurations:

• the E4887A platform which is based on a ParBERT 81250A and external jitter sources and test accessories suchas cable emulators (for short: ParBERT configuration). See Figure 1.

• The compact Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) configuration which is based on M8190A. See Figure 2.

The Video Format section in the upper part of the main window allows the user to select several parameters:

Video Mode

The desired Video Mode can be selected from a broad choice of CEA-861 video modes by means of a drop-downselection box.

Color Depth

A Color Depth of 24, 30, 36 or 48 bits can be chosen.

Color Mode

The Color Mode is user-selectable, too, and includes RGB as well as multiple YCbCr modes. The quantification can beFull Range or, Limited Range.

Content

The Content flag can be selected (Not specified, Graphics, Photo, Cinema and Game), in either 2D or 3D formats (FramePacking, Side-by-Side (half), Top-Bottom).

Check box selections are available for:

DVI Compatibility Mode

Check this option to enable the DVI interface which transfers only video.

Audio

Audio Output will be accessible if supported by the hardware.

Null Packets

Selecting Null Packets will fill up the blanking periods to achieve balanced pattern.

Scrambled

HDMI 2.0 introduces scrambling to reduce the EMI and to improve the DC balancing. To send scrambled video select theScrambled check box. Before performing the test with scrambling an extra step is required. It is necessary to enable thescrambling in the sink using the HDMI SCDC Controller.

TMDS Clock 1:40

If the TMDS Clock 1:40 property is selected, the TMDS data bit rate is changed to 40 times the TMDS clock rate instead of10. Just as for scrambling, it is necessary to use the HDMI SCDC Controller to inform the sink of the relationship betweenthe TMDS clock rate and the TMDS data bit rate. This function is only available for HDMI 2.0.

TMDS Information

Some information about the current frame format is shown in a table. The table comprises TMDS Signal Generator specificinformation, such as the memory usage.

5 Using the Software

Restrictions when using a ParBERT configuration:

The most important information is whether the selected sequence can be generated with the ParBERT sub-system of theTMDS Signal Generator or not. If the sequence can be generated, this is indicated by “Valid for ParBERT – True” at thebottom of the “Parameter” List in the main window.

All available video modes can be generated with 24 and 48 bit color depth. In addition, 36 bit color depth can be generatedfor most video modes. Some 30 bit color depth formats cannot be generated. For details, see the E4887A data sheet.Another important parameter is the “ParBERT Frequency Multiplier”. The following relationship holds:

ParBERT Bit Clock = TMDS Clock x Frequency Multiplier

Restrictions when using an AWG configuration:

None

5.2.2 Packets

On the right side of the main menu, several Info Packets can be selected. They will be sent with each frame during theblanking period.

Packet Position Offset

The position of the desired packets in the blanking can be selected. The offset of the packet position is relative to theHsync Active Start. A value of 0 will place the packets directly after the Hsync Active Start. Any value above 0 will shiftthe first and all residual packets by the amount of symbols as given in this field. For example, a value of 2 will shift theappearance of the first packet by 2 symbols from the Hsync Active Start. The possible “empty” parts between the HsyncActive Start and the first packet position will be filled with control characters.

Packet Viewer/Editor

The desired packets content can be shown and edited.

Press the Edit... button to edit the packets with the Packet Viewer/Editor as shown in Figure 15.

5 Using the Software

Use this window, for example to stress your device by applying deviations from the standard format or to generate yourown video pattern by starting with a reasonably close standard pattern.

Some of the parameters influence the data rate. If a data rate deviation is to be generated, this can be achieved bychanging the Frame Rate. The data rate can be computed by:

DataRate = (Hblank + Hresolution) × (Vblank + Vresolution) × Bits per pixel × Frame Rate

Select Ok if you want to apply the selected parameters or simply close this window to close this window without changes.

5.4.2 Color Gradient Setup

This sub-menu provides additional options that are not available from the “Video Content” group of the main window. It isshown in Figure 25 and offers the following choices:

5 Using the Software

Clock and Data Jitter

The Clock Jitter setup group shows the values of the sinusoidal (periodic) jitter Amplitude, Frequency and Phaseparameters which are generated either by the clock jitter source of the TMDS generator (ParBERT) or calculated into thewaveform (AWG). Check the Enable box and set the required jitter values to use this specific jitter.

The same applies to the Data Jitter. Note that the clock and data jitter parameters can be selected independently (default).Alternatively, the clock jitter parameter settings can be applied to the data jitter (Same as Clock).

For both, clock and data jitter, an independent 2nd Jitter Component can be selected and specified.

Output

The Output setup group provides access to the TMDS signal generator output channels (clock and data) in terms ofamplitudes and delay.

Signal Controls

The Signal Control group allows the sequence to be started and stopped.

Filter

The Filter allows you to set Filter parameters such as transition times and cable emulators, which are calculated into thewaveform and downloaded to the AWG.

If you are using a ParBERT based setup the selected parameters can be applied individually for instant validation byselecting the adjacent Apply buttons. Apply All Settings will set all parameters at the same time.

For an AWG-based setup only the Apply All Settings is available since specific parameters are calculated into thewaveform and cannot be set in real-time.

Close terminates the window without changes.

5.5 Setting Dialog

Once all parameters are set as wanted, the Setting Dialog can be used to manage settings, either as single setting or assetting lists as shown in Figure 32.
