Ariver runs through it. Riverbend, aptly named because it is on a bend of the Yarra River, is one of a select

group of only seven properties in this part of Lower Plenty to have absolute

river frontage. The property, set on about 11,000 square metres of land, has marvellous panoramic views towards Westerfolds Park. With visiting ducks, native pigeons, parrots plus the occasional koala, platypus and wedge-tailed eagle, this could be the next best thing to having a country retreat. It even has its own pumping rights to supply the native garden. Yet is it just 21 kilometres from the city.

Riverbend is an absolute stunner of a place. The house, which is at the end of a driveway with a grass-fringed pond, is built on the highest part of the property so that it captures the views across the bushland to the river.

Owners George and Ann Littlewood – he’s an engineer, she’s an artist with a passion for wood carving – commissioned architect Ande Bunbury, who specialises in environmentally sensitive designs, to redo the entire house.

“It was originally a 1970s builders’ special,” says George. “The whole objective was to make it part

of its environment. We were very keen to preserve the integrity of the place and to make it like a bush sculpture.”

Ceilings were raised and the place opened up. One of the architect’s signatures is the use of windows of different sizes so that, instead of large sheets of glass, they vary in size from small timber-framed windows that gradually become large picture windows. Red and green glass details are repeated throughout the house.

The architect also rearranged the living areas and created a feature wall of Smartrock (concrete made to look like stacked stone) around the fireplace.
