i ’m not feeling the love, people. When Sally Field stumbled onto the Oscars stage all those years ago to receive her second Academy Award, and

blurted out gratitude that forever set the benchmark for cringe-making neediness … well, she clearly wasn’t thinking about the life of the journalist.

“You like me – you really like me!” Ah, if only my fellow brothers and sisters of the press could afford such a moment of indulgence. You really dislike us, don’t you? This should have been clear, of course, from the gallingly repetitive survey results that find journalists listing somewhere to the lee of used-car salesman, and aft of real-estate agents.

Now I daily read, flickering before my eyes in a social-media blur of aggression and anonymity, the direct messages of disdain, distrust, disbelief and outright hostility that define the general public’s relationship with the Fourth Estate. Maybe it has never been very good, but I have never known it quite this bad.

The assumption of bias is absolute; the insistence on conspiracy over screw-up is immoveable. The tweets and the emails and the texts fly at me each day like seagulls at Tippi Hedren and, like her, I make pathetic, flailing attempts to fend them off, to defend myself and my organisation.

But the covenant of trust that must exist between the public and the press if a democracy is to remain healthy

seems completely ruptured. You really don’t trust us, do you? And I’m not exactly sure how that trust was so violently shattered, nor can I see how that trust is going to be restored.

It’s not just us, of course: others have helped shift us as a community to this stand-off of contempt. The institution that is Parliament has moved beyond absurd into deeply distressing, with question time a travesty – made this way by both the questioners and the responders; spin doctors control and contort messages on all fronts, public, private and corporate; accountability diminishes, and with it the justifiable outrage of a population that needs to stay concerned in order to demand transparency and truth. Even just a little bit of it.

It’s not just the daily barrage of disbelieving and accusatory messages I receive that has brought on this melancholy reflection: another kind of daily barrage has taken me over the edge, for I cannot imagine a single newspaper reader anywhere who would not come away with a diminished respect for journalists after reading the serial outrages of London’s News of the World and its systematic, many years-long tradition of phone hacking, privacy invasion and what now appears to be possible perversion of the course of justice.

After pleading guilty to a concerted campaign of hacking into the many mobile phones and phone

numbers of actress Sienna Miller (numbers desperately changed to avoid what seemed to the celebrity to be a kind of phone-tapping) many other cases have emerged.We now know that this was simply the modus operandi of the News Corp tabloid when it wanted information it couldn’t get honestly: hire a private investigator to figure out voicemail numbers and dial in.

Now it has been revealed that journalists at the paper hacked into the phone of missing and then murdered teenager Milly Dowler, listening to the increasingly frantic messages of distraught relatives, and then deleting messages when the mailbox became too full, creating the false impression the young girl was still alive.

Police are now investigating every high-profile case involving murder or abduction of a child since 2001, suspecting News of the World interference. An editor and an investigator have been jailed over the scandal.

It won’t help public distrust to learn that payoffs were made from the News of the World to some police officers.

I hang my head for my profession, for those who try to do it well and for those so betrayed by it. You won’t like us much now, will you? \

iT crippled him physically and emotionally and, even today, almost five years after it forced him to quit the Wiggles, you can hear the pain in Greg Page’s voice.It was the greatest of paradoxes – here he was singing about yummy fruit salad and hot potatoes and driving

around in a Big Red Car as young children watched in awe, the most innocent of fun, and all the while he was suffering a condition that he couldn’t put a name to but was crippling him.

Page underwent test after test, with no resolution about what was wrong with him. He feared it might be cancer.

“At various stages I was trying to assess what was wrong with me. There was one point where I had an X-ray done of my lungs, which showed a black spot on it. It turned out to be (just) a black spot. When they came back I thought, ‘I wonder what this is’. At the same time, stupidly enough, or funnily enough, I thought well, at least I’ve got a reason for the way that I’m feeling. If there’s something wrong with my lungs, that explains why I get short of breath and why I’m so tired. There was another three months of tests after that before I got a diagnosis.”

That diagnosis, in 2007, was that Page suffered from orthostatic intolerance, a disorder of the autonomic nervous system, which caused severe dizziness and exhaustion. Often on stage he felt as though he was about to collapse. In his autobiography Now and Then he writes of not being able to do a Wiggles show, and sometimes having a doctor give him an injection halfway through a performance.

As the Wiggles juggernaut powered on, Page dealt with the body that was betraying him. For 12 years he didn’t know what was wrong, and it was the not knowing that was hardest.

“I was being crippled physically and crippled emotionally,” Page says. “That not knowing, and knowing there was something wrong with you, and knowing there are three other guys who are trying to keep going with something you’re intrinsically a part of – that was weighing so heavily on my mind that, yes, I was emotionally unwell.”

He writes movingly about a Wiggles business meeting in 2006 before Page had quit the band. “We were talking about business deals and how they should be approached with the knowledge that I was unwell. Suddenly I burst into tears. I couldn’t understand what Mike (the band’s business manager) was saying. I could hear his words but my brain could not comprehend them. I couldn’t function at any basic level that required brain power. I felt useless and embarrassed.”

Physically he was in worse shape. “I would sometimes walk into walls when trying to go through a doorway because I’d overbalance,” he writes. “Or I’d go to pick some thing up and I’d miss it entirely; or I’d hit the side of my mouth with a fork full of food. I needed a walking stick on most occasions to assist me in getting around and if I walked across a room I was so exhausted I’d have to sit down to recover.”

He underwent numerous tests, including for multiple system atrophy, a terminal condition that would lead to death, in most cases within five to seven years (he was cleared of that). To add to the stress, Page was in the midst of breaking up with his wife. “It happened all at once,” he says.

He was the youngest member of the Wiggles and felt unnerved that he couldn’t cope with the pressure of touring .

“At the time I didn’t know I was suffering from a condition or a disorder. All I knew was I’d feel a certain way. I’d had the symptoms of this disorder for 12 years before I got diagnosed. In that time you see doctors, you tell them how you feel, you tell them you get short of breath, you tell them you get shaky, you tell them you get vague at times, you tell them your heart thumps in your chest and they send you off to tests to do with heart problems or lung problems or brain scans and each time the tests come back telling you you’re perfectly healthy, nothing wrong with those organs. But you still feel the way you feel.

“And when the other guys can do the routine – and Jeff is 20 years older – and the regime and the schedule with no problems, you start to think ‘What on earth is wrong with me? Am I just a wimp or something? Am I just not built like these guys?’. To get (diagnosed and find out) that reason you’ve felt this way for so long is a real relief and a weight off your mind.”

Back in Australia recovering, Page quit the band by email, am impersonal way of ending a 16-year journey

with Anthony Field, Jeff Fatt and Murray Cook.“They certainly understood. They could see, as time went

on, that I was getting worse and worse. There seemed to be no reason for it. I can’t imagine what they would have been thinking. They knew I had some personal problems I had to deal with, relationship-wise, so they were understanding of that, but in terms of my physical health it was perplexing everybody. ‘Why is Pagey feeling the way he’s feeling?’”

Page’s marriage break-up impacted on his health. “The decision to end the marriage was two years before I got unwell. So I was living on my own and trying to deal with that and, as anybody knows who has a marriage break-up, it is extremely taxing emotionally. There is no doubt in my mind that that made the symptoms of orthostatic intolerance so much worse.”

The lack of diagnosis also left Page suffering depression. How did he get through it all? “The way I got through it was by getting myself physically a bit better and feeling physically well, and then I felt that I could have the energy to deal with the emotional problems. At that time things were kind of amicable between me and my ex-wife, which was great. But being amicable doesn’t save a marriage and, as time goes on, things take their own course.”

He learnt a lot in the years after the Wiggles.“You find happiness again and you find ways of being able

to make yourself happy, because other people can’t make you happy, and that’s one thing I’ve learnt. I had a lot of self-esteem issues as a teenager and was looking for something that made me feel good about myself. And without the Wiggles, that’s where I felt the biggest blow to my self-esteem and my self-worth, that that was now gone. I’m the one who has to

make me happy. No other thing or no other person is going to make me happy in life, I just have to do that myself.”

Page would like to take a larger role as an advocate for orthostatic intolerance and help doctors understand it as well. He is involved with the Baker Institute in Melbourne where work is being done on the condition.

“They are doing some really amazing work in terms of world research,” he says. “I’ve been asked by them to help to advocate the doctors about better understanding of the condition so (doctors) can more easily diagnose at GP level.”

Page has remarried (to Vanessa) and has a 21-month-old daughter, Lara. Their second child is due soon.

“Life changes. There are certain aspects of my personal life that I’m a lot happier in. Career-wise I’m still a little bit lost in terms of how I’m going to get that sense of contribution to the community again. I’ve got some exciting opportunities that have been presented to me in the past four weeks. My (next gig) will probably never be as life-changing as the Wiggles was.”

Page has a fascination with Elvis Presley and after the Wiggles visited Presley’s home Graceland in Memphis. He now collects objects such as clothing, jewellery, books and furniture that were owned by Presley. He has set up a museum in Parkes in New South Wales where they hold an annual Elvis festival and has plans for another museum on the Gold Coast.

“(Visiting Graceland) changed my life in terms of feeling a connection and having an identification with his story,” he says. “Being able to walk though his house where he lived and get a sense of who he was as a person off stage. The thing I could identify with was a feeling of success in terms of a career … but in certain parts of life not having that same sense of happiness or success. I had this incredible feeling of success in what I did on stage, and then when I walked off stage I kind of felt some areas of my life were a little bit empty.”

The Wiggles have had an extraordinary career, selling massive numbers of CDs and DVDs and touring the world.

For many celebrities around the world, a ticket to a Wiggles show has been a hot item. Fans included Jerry Seinfeld, Mick

Fleetwood, Neil Sedaka, John Fogerty and Paul Hester from Crowded House.

“It was a real thrill to meet him, I was a big Crowded House fan,” Page says. “It did open the door to a lot of experiences I would not have had otherwise and experiences I’m very grateful for. To be asked to play in celebrity cricket matches where I get to bowl to Glenn McGrath or Mark Taylor, to face Shane Warne or Mike Whitney.”

What was Robert De Niro like? “Very quiet. He came backstage and said what we did was great,” Page says. “In movies he’s so menacing and so intense, to have him come backstage at a Wiggles show and say ‘What you guys do is really good’ so quietly and so timidly is just very surreal. And to perform with people like John Fogerty on DVD and CD is just something you never could dream, could happen.”

A confession: I am a Wiggles veteran. Many, many hours were spent sitting with my children as Page and his mates drove around in that Big Red Car.By the time my kids were about four I introduced

them to the Beatles and Crowded House and Paul Kelly, and was thankfully free of Dorothy the Dinosaur and Captain Feathersword. I told Page I didn’t want him to take this departure personally.

“It seems to be happening at younger ages these days, where the kids are moving onto the the Beatles, music influenced by their parents, or Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga,” he says. “That’s fine, that is going to happen. I still take comfort in the fact that that first few years of a child’s life they may be getting exposed to the Wiggles, and that may be shaping their musical tastes.”

The Wiggles have all done extremely well financially. For several years they hovered around the top of the BRW top-10 list of Australia’s richest entertainers. In 2010 their reported earnings were $33.5 million from live performances, merchandising and television endorsements.

“It has been amazing, and yes, I am set for life, and I’m very grateful for that,” Page says.

Recent media reports suggested Page had lost a lot of money as a result of collapsed property investments.

“Recently there’s been some speculation in the media about my financial position,” Page says. “Some of the numbers are over-inflated … There was talk of some loss in some investments that I made, which is true. I did make some losses, but they were saying I’d lost tens of millions of dollars and that when I left the group I got paid out $50 million, nonsensical figures, and it makes me upset because it puts the focus on what the Wiggles did on the money side of things.

“I guess people are fascinated by that. BRW did its top 50 earners and said ‘The Wiggles made $45 million’ and people look at that and say ‘There’s only four of them, they must have made $11 million each and they’re all massive multimillionaires’. We have done financially very well out of it, but if you look at the figures that way you are looking at them incorrectly. We put a lot of money into what we did to keep the integrity and the standards of what we did very high.”

Does he keep in touch with the other guys? “Haven’t seen them for a while. Spoke to Murray a couple of months ago. They’re flat out flying all around the world.”

Finally, with the diagnosis, Page has found some peace in his new life. He says he is no longer in denial about not being a Wiggle any more. When he sees the yellow skivvy (now occupied by Sam Moran) what are his feelings?

“Mixed feelings. I don’t have any negative feelings. My daughter Lara watches both versions of the Wiggles, the old ones with me and the new ones with Sam. and she gets as much enjoyment out of both versions. When I watch Sam I think isn’t it great that they’ve been able to go and replace me with (him). I must admit I look at it and think ‘I wonder what it would be like seeing that song with me in it, I wonder how different it would be’. That’s as far as it gets.” \

Cast youR mind back to the joys of cracking the cardboard on a cask of wine

in your early undergraduate days. For a long time that was my impression of the Riverina wine region.

That was close to 20 years ago in my case, and wine in a box now makes up only a small percentage of the 400,000 tonnes the Riverina crushes each year, equating to one in every four litres (or bottles) of wine produced in Australia.

The quality of the wines is much, much better than I remember, but I was a beer drinker back then.

Advancements in winemaking technology, better viticulture and efforts to produce wines suited to the hot inland climate are only part of the puzzle that makes up the Riverina.

The Riverina was founded in 1912, when the Murrumbidgee irrigation scheme was launched to provide produce growers a guaranteed yearly water entitlement in the dry, arid area. John McWilliam planted planted 40,000 vines at his Hanwood farm the following year, and the rest is history.

Without this guarantee of water, which still stands today, there wouldn’t be a Riverina.

There’s another reason why the Riverina has taken great strides in the past 20 years – most of the wineries are family owned, which frees them from the shackles of answering to shareholders.

One of the key regulations when the irrigation was introduced 99 years ago was that the land could only be privately owned – large corporations were forbidden. These regulations have since been relaxed but there’s still no sign of the corporates in the Riverina.

McWilliams was soon joined by the Penfolds and De Bortoli families as Italian migrants flooded Griffith and the surrounding areas in waves after the first and second world wars. Many of the original wineries still exist, and now the second and third generations are at the helm.

The Riverina has built a worldwide reputation for producing consistent wines on a huge scale, as evident with the enormous facilities at Casella Wines, which produces a staggering 120 million litres a year.

Wineries have taken a horses-for-courses approach to the wines they make and don’t try to extend

themselves with styles that don’t suit the region. The Riverina’s hot and dry climate is well

suited to late-ripening reds, such as durif and petit verdot, and white grapes that have

an ability to ripen with high amounts of natural acidity that help them stay balanced, such as pinot grigio and chardonnay, do well.

Fortifieds and botrytis-affected sticky dessert wines have also found a welcome home and ideal growing conditions.

Grape varieties from southern Italy, where the climate is similar, are being planted, and the early signs for these alternative varieties are good.

Many of these vines are still young and the wines in the experimentation stages of their existence as winemakers and vignerons look to see what else the region is capable of.

Keep an eye out for wines such as vermentino, montepulciano and aglianico in the coming years – they have great potential in the land described by explorer John Oxley in 1817 as “a country which for bareness and desolation … has no equal”. \

YeaRs ago, a friend grumbled at having to join his extended family

for lunch at the Old England Hotel in Heidelberg. Surely he was too cool for this.

But a decade later, travelled and sophisticated but yearning for some good pub grub, he happily joined us for dinner at the hotel. Only this time, instead of eating in the bistro along with about 200 others, dinner was served in the dining room.

The dining room looks through to the bistro through heavy gold curtains. It has timber tables, configured for large or small groups, including a big, round table in the centre of the room beneath an elaborate brass light fitting with pale gold shades. On the floor, the distinctive Royal Stewart tartan with its red background – Queen Elizabeth II’s official tartan – keeps the image of Old England front of mind.

The food is the same as the bistro food but with a $3 per-person surcharge for the table service. That seemed like a much better idea than queuing at the servery, so we settled down in very comfortable chairs by the fireplace and ordered glasses of wine and a bitters, lime and soda.

The menu is divided into breads, entrees and sharing dishes, salad meals, stir-fries, pasta and risotto, fish and seafood, char grills, other mains, daily specials and desserts.

We started with chicken satay sticks served on a Thai noodle salad with spicy peanut satay sauce and pork, chicken and shiitake mushroom spring rolls served with crisp lettuce, Vietnamese mint and chilli dipping sauce. Pleasant enough, but not exciting.

The mains arrived on large white plates. The piece of Atlantic salmon served on a white oblong plate came with a creamy lemon-feta mash, broccolini and a tomato salsa. Described as a “baked fillet” on the menu, the well-travelled fellow who ate it said that the skin could have been a little crisper, but the fish was fresh and tasty.

The 400-gram rib eye had a cute swirl of herbed butter on top. Next to it, the mound of sautéed spinach and six big, fat chips were arranged like a work of art on the plate. The meal looked good, and the meat was tender, succulent and pleasingly pink near the bone.

As a sucker for the traditional chicken parma, I was not disappointed when Old England’s Premium parma came to the table. It was a very fat and juicy chicken breast with prosciutto on top, the same tomato salsa, Yarra Valley Persian feta, olives and finished with pesto and served with chips.

The prosciutto added a salty hit to the dish, but became rather dry and frayed at the edges. The creamy Persian feta and pesto that oozed around the meat once you put the fork into the chicken flesh was satisfyingly exotic. It tasted pretty good, too.

A small side salad came with the parma. There it sat in its little bowl, the usual arrangement of lettuce leaves, baby tomatoes and sliced onion with a slice of cantaloupe and watermelon on top. Not sure what its origin was, but the more traditional salad we ordered for

the table with its cucumber, tomatoes, black olives, and grated lemon zest was much more appealing.

The Old England Hotel was founded in 1848. It has a long history that mirrors the changes of Heidelberg.

In the past century it attracted everyone from the artists of the Heidelberg School when they were young, struggling painters working in and around the area to middle-class families having a Sunday outing with grandparents and toddlers in tow. The pub has been restored using original bluestone and walls made from local bricks.

A wall depicting the hotel’s history shows grainy black-and-white pictures of Burgundy Street in the 1880s through to a 1916 Myer staff picnic held at the Old England as well as riders preparing to ride to hounds.

Just as the fashions have changed – all those Myer girls were in big-brimmed Edwardian hats and long dresses – so has the food. The boiled fish and asparagus in butter that featured on a 1903 menu has gone, and we didn’t see anyone in hats.

What we did observe were large numbers of diners – from big family groups with small children to couples and business people – tucking into the hearty pub food that remains a favourite in the ’burbs. \

The Old England Hotel is a local landmark ideal for locals, families and people coming from different suburbs but looking for a central meeting point.

It offers several dining areas. The bistro has won best metropolitan hotel bistro four times, most recently in 2008. The dining room is a more intimate space, seating about 50 and is ideal for special occasions, quiet dinners and private functions. The dining room is rather elegant with its open fireplace, well-spaced

tables and upholstered chairs. Paintings reflect the importance of the 19th-century Impressionist painters of the Heidelberg School, but the Old England theme is never far away. Just look at the Royal Stewart tartan carpet that is a recurring theme in the décor. The dining room offers hearty, value-for-money meals, served on plain white plates by friendly staff. Damask napkins get top marks. The wine list also includes limited wine by the glass. \

verdict The dining room at the Old England Hotel is a very pleasant place to eat. It serves hearty, upmarket pub food at reasonable prices in a comfortable and spacious setting. The menu is the same as the bistro, but for $3 a person extra you get table service. The generally young staff are pleasant, polite and well trained. You cannot hear the buzz and bells of the pokies, just the clinking of glasses and the chatter of families. Perhaps this is why it has such a loyal following. It really is possible to eat in a sophisticated dining room without even realising you are in a venue that also has gaming machines.

I n just a few years, Brisbane shoe label Tom Gunn has clocked up seven seasonal collections and recently collaborated with emerging designer Gary Bigeni for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week,

held in Sydney in May.Designed by friends Gabrielle � ompson and

Shannon Gunn, who both learnt the art of shoemaking in Europe (they studied at Ars Arpel School in Milan), the brand is fast becoming known for its elegant cra� smanship, emphasis on silhouette and the use of high-quality leather in luscious shades.

“We both loved independent and original Australian clothing designers but noticed that footwear designers were few and far between,” explains � ompson of their decision to launch the label in 2008.

“We also saw a gap in the market for originally designed shoes by an Australian designer. � e footwear market in Australia has always been dominated by large companies and imported international labels.”

Hence the arrival of Tom Gunn – a shoe brand run by two women with a passion for shoes, a so� spot for leather and a knack for elegant designs. It was also a perfect opportunity to create shoes that they wanted to wear.

� eir forthcoming spring 2011 collection, titled � e Darling, evokes images of the dry and hazy Australian outback. In fact, they also had those early explorers in mind when it came to de� ning the colour palette and edge of their collection.

For the Gary Bigeni spring 2011 show, the pair created a 13-centimetre, minimalist-inspired strappy heel in so� Italian Nappa leather that was featured in grey, burnt orange, amber brown, light brown, light blue and intense blue.

“Tom Gunn is all about juxtaposition – paring

unusual leathers, textures and colours in a way that somehow works – we wanted to work with someone who pushes the boundaries in a similar fashion and Gary was our number-one preference,” says � ompson.

In their collection, it’s all about shades of so� sand, burnt orange and amber brown for a hint of Australian landscape, but their true strength lies in their design from unusual mules, platforms, chiseled wedges, brogue-inspired � ats and heels with a point of di� erence. � e Maxim shoe is one the designers say you can wear all year round.

“A sexy yet unusual mule that will look equally great with jeans or with a short dress,” says Gunn.

“We wanted to create a shoe that was dressy without being too girly. We love heavier, more covered upper designs, and this, paired with a stiletto heel, completes the look for us. Our leathers come from the same tanneries as Miu Miu, Jimmy Choo and Louis Vuitton,” she says.

Until a few seasons ago, Tom Gunn manufactured its shoes in Italy, but due to rising costs and the status

of the world economy, a shi� to China was in order. � at doesn’t mean there’s a downgrading in quality or production expectations – the leather is still sourced from Italy but assembled in Asia.

“Up until our � � h season we made our shoes in Italy,” says Gunn. “Due to the world economy as well as the

long distance that Australia is from Italy, we made the move last year to manufacture in China. We

work with a small handmade workshop and use Italian leathers. � is has enabled us the freedom to be more creative and dynamic with our collections while bringing the prices to the level that the Australian consumer is

comfortable with.”Tom Gunn, which has also collaborated with

fashion house Saba, is known for its love of exotic leather – think python and lizard. “We can't get over our addiction to exotic leathers. � e texture and the rich colours that come from these has inspired us to make them part of our label hallmark. Using these leathers adds another dimension to the design without taking away from the styling,” says Gunn.

Named best footwear designer in the 2010 2threads Fashion Awards, as well as selected as � nalists in the prestigious 2009 Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards, Tom Gunn is fast becoming a label to look out for.

W hile Kate Mornement’s friends played with dolls, she helped nurse orphaned sheep. As they hit the netball court, she mustered cattle on her cousin’s station. And while they

celebrated finishing university, she was chasing rhinos in Borneo.

Now, as most of those mates work in offices, Mornement spends her days talking to cats, dogs and cockatoos. And she couldn’t be happier.

“I always knew I wanted to work with animals,” she says, sipping an after-lunch latte in a pale-pink dog-print T-shirt – what else? A sensible grey cardigan and dangly silver earrings complete the casual look of someone completely at ease in their own skin.

Mornement has just seen a client of her Pets Behaving Badly animal behaviour business; with her simple, straight blonde hair and genuinely happy smile you can easily picture her soothing an anxious pooch or grumpy cat … or even their over-stressed owners.

Animals have always been a passion for this country girl at heart. Not even a primary-school teacher accidentally stepping on a chick she was raising with classmates could put her off. The chick died but her passion continued to grow.

As a young child, Mornement lived behind the Booroorban pub in New South Wales, between Hay and Deniliquin. These were the days before official animal shelters, so her mother, Margaret, became the local go-to person for orphaned wildlife.

Mornement found herself nursing joeys and sheep while looking after the family cat, Milly. She also rode Cat Ballou, a horse agisted on pub land. “There were lots of farms around the pub,” she recalls. “Any orphaned animals we would look after. We’d help raise joeys … orphaned sheep.”

Milly had kittens, and one of Mornement’s earliest memories is helping to feed them. “We also had a kelpie cross dog called Fiva – because she cost $5,” she adds. Such experiences helped lay the foundations for a

lifelong love of all creatures great and small, particularly cats, dogs and parrots.

Moving to Melbourne at about five did nothing to curb her enthusiasm. Mornement and brothers Sam, now 31, and Tom, 28, continued to visit their cousin’s sheep and cattle station, yabbying and helping with mustering and shearing.

During these visits Mornement’s admiration for birds also grew. “My uncle and … my cousin Anna found an orphaned wedge-tailed eagle chick,” she says. “She pretty much raised this wedge-tailed eagle by herself. She named it Eddie the Eagle. That was just amazing. He was so tame. He was really used to all of us kids. He was beautiful.”

In Melbourne the family eventually settled in Balwyn and rescued Molly the cat and Pepe the bitzer from the RSPCA. Next came Harley, a hyperactive blue heeler who taught Mornement a valuable lesson in choosing the right pet. A working dog, he wasn’t suited to the suburbs. Sadly, Harley was hit by a car and died before his first birthday.

A few months later came Lucy, a gorgeous tan and white cavalier King Charles spaniel. She lived for 15 years, delighting her family and visiting nursing homes with Margaret, an aged-care worker. Her father Peter runs a wine and coffee shop in East Balwyn, Bin 3 Fine Wine Merchants.

While she loved her pets, Mornement did find some time for people. At school she and her friends at Genazzano FCJ College obsessed over footballers and cricketers.

“We used to catch the train to Essendon to watch the Essendon footy players train,” she says. “We also used to watch the Australian cricketers train and play at the MCG every summer. We had all their autographs and photos with the players.”

But mostly Mornement dreamt of all things zoological. Apart from a brief Jurassic Park-inspired flirtation with archaeology and paleontology, her commitment to a career with live animals has never wavered.

Now 33, she is fast developing a reputation as one of Melbourne’s few qualified animal behaviourists. She helps people train their pets and understand why they misbehave or fret. Within a few minutes of meeting her you’ll learn all manner of fascinating facts.

Take birds. Did you know the African grey parrot has the cognitive ability of a young child and can answer questions? Cockatiels and eclectus parrots are also good talkers. The eclectus, native to the Cape York Peninsula, is “incredibly intelligent” and has “very good vocals”.

So how do you teach a parrot to talk? “It’s just a matter of talking to them every day,” Mornement says. “You just repeat it over and over and eventually they pick it up.”

Before you rush out to buy one, parrots are high maintenance and a big commitment. “They need companionship all the time,” Mornement warns.

“They need training every day; you need to teach them appropriate behaviour.”

While animals are her forte, Mornement is not averse to human commitment. Last year she married David Perry, whose only pet as a child was a rabbit. “I get along very well with both species,” she says, laughing. “In my job it’s very important that I understand the needs and expectations of pet owners as well as their pets’ needs and behaviour.”

Perry and Mornement met while working at Safeway to fund their respective university courses – his computer science and hers arts/science. “I was a checkout chick and he was a service supervisor,” she says. “The first time I met him I didn’t like him. He didn’t smile enough. He used to tell me off if I wasn’t wearing my bow tie.”

Sparks still flew, and last year they married after 10 years together. Mornement, whose name was de

Mornement before French ancestors dropped the “de” when they came to Australia, will keep it professionally because she has built a reputation – and doesn’t want to be confused with singer Katy Perry.

Her husband is a medical field engineer. He maintains and services medical equipment, including an amazing robot that helps surgeons achieve pinpoint precision during operations. “This robot’s got arms … it’s really cool,” Mornement says. “It reduces recovery time.”

Despite Perry’s lack of animal exposure, he is happy for his wife to dote on their boxer, Archie, and black Labrador, Joseph. But he draws the line at the chooks, parrots and cats she would probably also have if she could. “He liked animals but … he wasn’t an animal person at all,” she says.

When she is working, research and backing her methods with science are important to Mornement. She completed her bachelor of arts/science degree with first-class honours in zoology/animal behaviour at La Trobe University.

Her honours thesis looked at the mating habits of zebra finches and whether females chose healthier, fitter males to mate with. “It wasn’t significant but there was a trend that they did,” she says.

The research was supervised by leading zebra finch authority Dr Richard Zann, who died tragically in the Kinglake Black Saturday fires on February 7, 2009, with his wife Eileen and daughter Eva.

and Perry travelled to Thailand, after which he returned and she helped researchers from SOS Rhino in tracking the endangered Sumatran rhinoceros in Borneo’s Tabin Wildlife Reserve.

Volunteers trekked through virgin bush, surveying the rhino’s habitat and finding footprints. Camps were built from trees and Mornement slept in hammocks after eating deer-like dik-diks hunted by locals. “It tasted bloody good because up until then I’d just been living on canned tuna and rice,” she says.

Next came a stint in a pet shop, where customers often returned for advice about how to handle their animals. In 2004, Pets Behaving Badly was born to help pet owners cope using scientifically backed methods. Mornement is also conducting her own PhD research on how shelters assess dogs for adoption.

Animal behaviour theories are a lot like parenting. Certain methods find favour and possibly later rejection when a newer, scientifically tested idea comes along. Mornement says the latest research shows that positive reinforcement, and not aggressive physical discipline such as smacking or yanking chains, works best.

“All you need to train a dog is their favourite treat,” she says. “When you’re teaching a dog a new behaviour and you want them to do it every time … every time the dog sits, treat, so it learns that sitting means, ‘I get a treat which I really love’.”

US animal expert Karen Pryor uses simple clickers that sound like the party favours we remember as kids. “Where you’re training a new behaviour the click sound marks the exact behaviour that you want and is always followed with a treat,” Mornement says. “They learn very quickly. It’s fantastic. All you do is click and treat.”

Some pets are easier to train than others. Common dog and cat problems include separation anxiety and aggression. Some stem from puppies and kittens missing crucial love and encouragement from six to 16 weeks when early socialisation sets the pattern for life. Those treated badly during this period or denied socialisation with lots of people and other animals are more likely to be anxious, not know how to play or find it hard to trust people. Serious cases of conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder, in which dogs or cats may constantly chase light reflections and shadows, can require medication.

“They give dogs Prozac,” Mornement says, adding that it would only be part of an overall treatment and behaviour-modification plan.

“In cases where there’s … severe separation anxiety or OCD, we work with the client’s vet and may prescribe medication,” she says. “The medications alone don’t fix

the problem; they just stop the symptoms.”Mornement visits clients for up to 90 minutes,

compiling a health and behaviour history, observing the animal and maybe demonstrating behaviour modification techniques. She then writes a report and behaviour-modification program. All this, plus follow-up email and phone support, costs $250-$300.

It is money well spent if it stops your beloved pooch fretting all day or your cat pooing in your shoes to mark its territory. Mornement also helps with pet selection and training regular pets. “I’ve never met a dog I couldn’t train,” she says.

The affable animal lover presents segments for Channel 31’s popular Hound TV show, which airs in Melbourne on Mondays at 7 pm, and writes for Pets magazine and Dogs NSW. She also loves documentaries and going to the movies; her childhood favourites were films such as Turner & Hooch, Free Willy and Babe.

“I also read a lot of books about animals,” she adds. “My favourite books I read as a child were Born Free and The Silver Brumby.”

Mornement, who hopes to add human babies to her menagerie at some stage, laughs at suggestions she could be the next Dr Harry or Bondi Vet. But she clearly likes the idea. “I’d love it,” she says. “The media stuff is really good because it gives you an outlet to get to a lot of people and to help them to improve their relationship with their pet.” \

W hen James Haramis was 10, he spent a lot of time at the Bundoora Police Paddocks. Born with cerebral palsy, which a� ected his feet, he was bullied at Kingsbury Primary School.

A� er school he sought solace in the grass alongside the frogs, lizards and snakes.

He may have had “funny feet”, but his classmates admired his ability to draw and make things. In awe, they looked at his replica wax dinosaur and the cardboard robots made at home, wondering just how he created them.

“I realised that there was a solution to surviving bullying, and that was by excelling at art,” Haramis says. “� e only time I was acknowledged as someone of substance was when I helped them with projects.”

At 14, Haramis did a pencil drawing of his Greek grandmother. Such was its so� ness and intricacy that its lines echoed the Old Masters.

Two years later, Reservoir High School named him its best art student and he won a place in the Victorian Gi� ed Children’s Program.

Montsalvat artist Aileen Weinberg became his mentor and assisted him with the study of still life. She then enrolled him in the Victorian Artists Society, their youngest-ever member.

“Joining (the VAS) allowed me to do life drawing,” he says.

“While other teens were playing with their scooters, I was studying the naked body.”

Oddly, rather than suggesting he pursue tertiary studies in art, Weinberg advised him to learn industrial design. Haramis’ parents trusted her judgement and so he undertook the RMIT tertiary orientation program in preparation for entrance.

unsuccessfully trying to pass year one. From the beginning, he knew it wasn’t for him.

“I surpassed the standard of the illustrator from Ford (Motor Company) who came to teach us,” he says. “But they (lecturers) started questioning my work; how I could design and create prototypes in 3D. It was intimated I cheated, and so I le� .”

Haramis turned to commercial painting, doing houses and even helping to coat the MCG. Along the way he also began work for a company that sold outdoor garden ornaments.

His boss learnt of his artistic and sculptural talents and asked him to make a Grecian urn. He carved the mould in plaster and it was then mass-produced. Soon a� er, a commission arrived from Flemington Racecourse. � ey wanted a reproduction of the course’s old Minnehaha fountain, which no longer existed. He was shown a black-and-white photo taken in 1899 and asked to create a 4.4-metre tall version.

With no formal training in sculpture, Haramis did the historical research for period detail, dra� ed its shape, carved it out of plaster and made the mould. It took the 19-year-old nine weeks to complete.

Further work followed such as fountains, restoration at the Collins Street ANZ bank and creating the pod-like � breglass reception counter at Mattel’s then-South Yarra o� ce.

He also cast bodies, both alive and dead, a process he continues to do.

“My mum died last year and as a gi� to my father, I cast my mum’s head and hands,” he says. “� e head is on a marble base and looks like it came from a museum. Dad has almost worn o� the clear � nish, as he kisses it every morning and night.”

While Haramis enjoyed the variety and challenge of industrial commissions, 3½ years ago, he once more took up painting, something he hadn’t done since he was a child.

Each day at 4.30pm when he returned from house painting, he would descend into the studio adjoining his Greensborough home and translate onto linen the landscape images in his head.

“I am an emotional painter,” he says. “If I’m angry, I’ll paint angry. For me, painting is a

release, my punching bag. People do sport to release but I can’t because of my feet. What else do I have? Myself, nature and painting. � ey are my wonderful friends.”

Haramis doesn’t uses photographic references to paint, nor does he reads art books.

His technique, which touches on the moodiness of Turner and the realism of Wyeth, is self-taught. He has deliberately shunned studying artistic greats, as he doesn’t wish to be in� uenced, preferring to hone his own style.

Haramis’ discovery is down to his wife, Desiree. Last year she sent images of his landscapes over her phone to Margot Tasca, owner of the Light Factory Gallery in Eltham.

A� er visiting their home, Tasca o� ered Haramis a 40-canvas show. At the invitation-only Contemplation preview on June 1, a third of his work sold. � e exhibition � nished on June 26.

Haramis hopes this will be the bridge to life as a full-time artisan. “I never thought of the money,” he says of the frenzied sales.

“You know what I thought of, honestly? � at someone believes in me. And that’s worth a million dollars.” \

BIKE TORQUE\ LOZ BLAIN RIDES A MAGNIFICENT ALL-ROUNDER

PRACTICALITY and versatility are almost dirty words to today’s

motorcycle buyer – but it wasn’t always so. � irty years ago, great sportsbikes were expected to handle bush-bashing and touring duties as well as carve up the racetrack. You owned one motorcycle and it had to do everything.

In 2011, motorcycle shopping is all about specialisation. Sportsbikes are built with such intense racetrack focus that they make road riding more di� cult and uncomfortable. Tourers are built like gigantic tarmac couches, great for long freeway miles but wildly impractical around town, where they take up two-thirds as much space as a car on the road.

And the buying public seems to love it this way – there’s no room for all-rounders. You’re a sportsbiker, a cruiser rider, a motard maniac or one of 100 other subclasses. It becomes part of your riding identity.

Ducati’s Multistrada 1200 S Touring is one of the greatest all-rounders I’ve ever ridden – and I mean that in the nicest possible way, even though I fear Ducati’s marketing team will hate me for saying it. � is, a� er all, is a machine that’s deliberately marketed as four highly specialised bikes in one: an urban getabout; a long-range tourer; a full-on sports machine; and a quasi-enduro o� -roader.

� e transformation between the Multistrada’s di� erent characters is achieved using one of the most sophisticated electronics packages ever mounted to a road bike. Switching between riding modes changes the engine’s peak power output, the character of the ride-by-wire throttle’s response, the level of anti-wheelspin traction control, the anti-lock braking system set-up and the suspension settings.

� e fact that these kinds of systems didn’t exist, or were in embryonic form at the MotoGP level, just 10 years ago is a measure of the blinding pace of motorcycle development, and a glimpse of the future. And the best thing you can say about this brace of new technologies on the Multistrada is that it all simply works without complicating the ride.

� e MTS1200’s basic speci� cation is extremely tasty: it weighs just 189 kilograms but puts out a meaty 110 kiloWatts and 118.6 Newton-metres of torque, produced by a 1198cc L-twin Testastretta engine with Ducati’s trademark Desmodromic (gear-operated) valve system.

� e engine is a gently toned-down version of the 1198 Superbike powerplant – and if you’ve thrown a leg over a Ducati sportsbike in recent years you’ll understand what a

potent force it can be. It simply hammers, whatever riding mode you select. Torque is instant and ample anywhere in the rev range, it rears up like a rutting stallion in the � rst three gears and things get absolutely manic as the revs build, especially in the full-fat sports and touring modes.

In fact, it’s this excess of power that really makes things such as ABS and traction control start looking like necessary additions. Governments across the Western world are trying to make ABS mandatory on motorcycles – and while many disagree with this policy push, it’s hard to argue against the e� ectiveness of a modern ABS such as the Bosch/Brembo combination � tted to the Multistrada.

� e ABS just works. It works in the dry, it works in the wet, it works on gravel and in the dirt, and it works at high speeds as well as slower ones – which is just as well, because when you accelerate out of a corner and brie� y enjoy the raging power of that engine, you tend to � nd yourself approaching your next corner a lot quicker than usual.

� e ABS won’t save you in a corner, though, so the � ne art of brake control is still worth learning.

� e Ducati traction control system is hard to fault as well. Within each riding mode, you can con� gure up to eight levels of traction intervention, from “I am a grandma, don’t let the rear wheel spin up at all” right up to “I am the powerslide king, bow to my excellence”. Being in the

former camp myself, especially on violently expensive bikes I don’t own, I gave it a few tests on various surfaces with a high degree of intervention and found it to work exactly as advertised – the intervention was hardly noticeable and the end result was uninterrupted forward drive.

Marketing and sales people may try to tell you that ABS and traction control are safety systems, there to preserve your skin and your investment when you run out of talent. I suspect it doesn’t work that way in the motorcycle world.

To me, an ABS system means that you start enjoying super-hard braking as much as you enjoy hitting the gas, testing the system at red lights and giggling to yourself.

As for traction control, well, you can now hit full throttle pretty much as soon as you see a corner exit. � e electronics gently keep the rear wheel in line and the end result is that you thunder out of corners signi� cantly faster than you may be used to. � e line between additional safety and “now I can go heaps faster” starts looking pretty thin.

Glints of gold at the front and rear of the Multistrada tell you it’s wearing Ohlins suspension, and if you’ve ever used it before, that’s all you’ll need to know. It’s the best in the business. Comfortable, yet � rm; controlled, yet compliant.

Each riding mode has its own pre-set suspension set-up that takes into account whether you’ve got pillion passengers and/or luggage aboard but, like every other setting, it’s fully customisable if you want to roll up your sleeves and delve into the set-up menu on the digital dash – which also rates a mention as one of the best I’ve ever used.

But although it’s good fun to tinker with the riding modes and the multitude of set-up options, the longer I spent with the Multistrada, the more I just le� it in touring mode and enjoyed it. Because behind all the electrickery and marketing, this isn’t four bikes in one.

It’s one very good bike that happens to excel in a lot of areas. It’s comfy enough for long-range touring; it’s zippy and light enough to be great fun around town. It handles reasonably well o� road, on dirt and even trails and it’s probably faster than most sportsbikes, on most roads, for most riders. It’s a proper all-rounder in every sense.

The current owners of Cooinda can certainly attest to the meaning of the word – literally “a happy place” in the local Aboriginal language. “It has been a wonderful house to raise a family,” says the woman of
