The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ cruciied, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctiication and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Segunda Lectura 1 Corintios 1:18-31

Dios ha escogido a la gente despreciada y sin importancia de este mundo, es decir, a los que no son nada, para anular a los que son algo. Así nadie podrá presumir delante de Dios. Pero Dios mismo los ha unido a ustedes con Cristo Jesús, y ha hecho también que Cristo sea nuestra sabiduría, nuestra justicia, nuestra santiicación y nuestra liberación. De esta manera, como dice la Escritura: “Si alguno quiere enorgullecerse, que se enorgullezca del Señor.”

But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God. I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. Renewal of Vows

After the Sermon, the Bishop addresses those who are to renew their vows. They stand facing the Bishop.

Bishop Dear friends, the ministry we share is none other than the sacriicial ministry of Christ, who gave himself up to death on the cross for the salvation of the world. By his glorious resurrection he has opened for us the way of everlasting life. By the gift of the Holy Spirit he shares with us the riches of his grace.

We are called to proclaim his death and resurrection, to administer the Sacraments of the New Covenant, which he sealed with his blood on the cross, and to care for his people in the power of the Spirit.

Jesús había hecho muchos milagros delante de esa gente, pero aun así la gente no creía en él.

Esto sucedió porque tenía que cumplirse lo que había escrito el profeta Isaías: “Dios mío, ¿quién ha creído en nuestro mensaje? ¿A quién le has mostrado tu poder?”

Obispo Amados hermanos, el ministerio que compartimos no es otro que el ministerio sacriicial de Cristo, quien se dio a sí mismo a la muerte en la cruz para salvación del mundo. Por medio de su gloriosa resurrección nos ha abierto las puertas del camino de la vida eterna. Por medio del don del Espíritu Santo, comparte con nosotros las riquezas de su gracia.

Bishop And now, as your bishop, I, too, before God and you, re-dedicate myself and reafirm the promises that I made when I was ordained. I ask your prayers.

People May the Lord who has given us the will to do these things, give us also the grace and power to perform them.

Consecration of the Holy Chrism

Bishop Dear Friends in Christ: In the beginning, the Spirit of God hovered over the creation; and, throughout history, God, by the gift of the Holy Spirit, has empowered his people to serve him. As a sign of that gift, the priests and kings of Israel were anointed with oil; and our Lord Jesus was himself anointed with the Holy Spirit at his Baptism as Christ, God’s own Messiah. At Baptism, Christians are likewise anointed by that same Spirit to empower them for God’s service. Let us now set apart this oil to be the sign of that anointing.

Bishop Let us pray.

The Bishop then places a hand on the vessel of oil and prays

Eternal Father, whose blessed Son was anointed by the Holy Spirit to be the Savior and servant of all, we pray you to consecrate this oil, that those who are sealed with it may share in the royal priesthood of Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

O Lord, holy Father, giver of health and salvation: Send your Holy Spirit to sanctify this oil; that, as your holy apostles anointed many that were sick and healed them, so may those who in faith and repentance receive this holy unction be made whole; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your ininite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace.

But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people.

Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal lesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

The Presider continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be illed with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever.

Bendito seas, Dios benigno, creador del universe y dador de vida. Nos formaste a tu propia imagen y nos llamaste a vivir en tu amor ininito. Nos diste el mundo para cuidarlo y para que fuéramos administradores ieles y mostráramos tu gracia abundante.

Pero fallamos al honrar tu imagen entre cada uno y en nosotros mismos; no pudimos ver tu bondad en el mundo que nos rodea; y violamos tu creación, abusamos uno de otro, y rechazamos tu amor. Sin embargo tú nunca dejaste de cuidarnos, y preparaste el camino de salvación para toda la gente.

Por medio de Abraham y Sara nos llamaste a una alianza contigo. Tú nos salvaste de la esclavitud, nos sustentaste en el desierto, y nos diste profetas para renovar tu promesa de salvación.

Y así, en la plenitud de los tiempos, mandaste a tu Palabra eterna, hecha carne mortal en Jesús. Nacido en una familia humana, y viviendo entre nosotros, él nos reveló tu gloria. Entregándose libremente a la muerte en la cruz, él triunfó sobre el mal, abriendo el camino de libertad y vida.

En noche antes de que muriera por nosotros, nuestro Salvador Jesucristo tomó pan; y después de darte gracias, lo partió y lo dio a sus amigos, y dijo: “Tomen y coman. Este es mi Cuerpo, entregado por ustedes. Hagan esto como memorial mío”.

Después de la cena tomó la copa de vino, y después de darte gracias, se los entregó, y dijo: “Beban todos de él. Esta es mi Sangre del nuevo Pacto, sangre derramada por ustedes y por muchos para el perdón de los pecados. Siempre que lo beban, háganlo como memorial mío”.

Por tanto, proclamamos el misterio de fe:

Cristo ha muerto.

Cristo ha resucitado.

Cristo volverá.

Celebrante continúa:

Recordando su muerte y resurrección, te presentamos ahora de tu creación este pan y este vino. Que sean para nosotros, por medio de tu Espíritu Santo, el cuerpo y la sangre de nuestro Salvador Jesucristo. Concédenos que ahora compartiendo estos dones quedemos llenos de tu Espíritu Santo y vivamos como el cuerpo de Cristo en el mundo. Llévanos a la herencia eterna de tus hijas e hijos, con todos tus santos, pasados, presentes y los que vendrán, alabemos tu nombre por siempre.
