LONG WAVE CONVERTER DETAILS by Jim Hagan and Bob Foxworth

Here are de ta i l s of the long wave converter tha t i s being offered along with the multi-core f e r r i t e loop antenna that was jus t described in DX News. A schematic and f o i l pattern i s provided below. The osc i l la tor subassembly i s a commercial item, available from International Crystal. The frequency of the crystal may be selected t o su i t the user 's requirements. Suggested frequencies would be 3500 kHz which would permit the user t o tune the f i r s t 500 kHz range on a bandspread range fo r the 80-meter amateur band on h i s HF receiver, or 3000 o r 4000 kHz which would permit use of a d ig i ta l frequency readout with minimum changing of the preset (e.g. 164 would come in a t 4164 on the d i a l ) . The double-balanced mixer i s a commercially available assembly and use of it allows the user t o tune much closer t o the osc i l la tor frequency before undesirable osc. feedthrough effects become a problem. This represents a considerable improvement in performance over typical mixing type LW conver- te rs . The lowpass f i l t e r incorporated around L1 and L2 i s effective i n keeping out unwanted broadcast s ta t ion feedthrough. This converter i s intended specifi- cally t o operate with the f e r r i t e core loop/preamplifier described ear l ie r . Note tha t the operating voltage appears on the input jack. This allows use of a single coax cable between the preamp and the converter. The procedure for inquiries i s the same as tha t described i n the antenna a r t i c l e i n DX News.

20 197576 ANNUAL REPORT ZI

T H E "LORDED BEVERAGE" A N T E N N A The 1975-76 DX season w i l l be remenbered by NJFC as the year that the de-centralisation was implemented. Reprints, Publicst ions orders and Gmbership functions were farmed out I n i t i a l Report thus reducing the HQ workload sijgificantly. As you my remember, this de-centralisnt ion (Frank E. Dailey) became a necessity rather than R dream for us during the pest year due t o om Treeaurer's =ore frequent absences due t o business, end our h X o m Coordhtor's business comit- While a t t e n d i n g t h e pre-Convention YAD a t Je r ry S t a r r ' a house, ments and impending (at tht time) marriage. .We8 ~ o y d and I had t h e oppor tun i ty t o diacusa t h e g o t e n t l a 1 f o r

what we chose t o c a l l t h e " ~ o a d e d Beverage Antenna . What t h i s The basic de-centralisation of Publications qml Reprkts proved t o be fnir ly msy t o would amount t o i s upwards o f 1333 f e e t of wi re i n an a c t u a l s t r a i g h t accosplish, our only problems being the UPS strike and the resultar& problems h get- l i n e o f 633 t o 753 f e e t . (As i n a c t u a l beverage antennas, t h e longer t ing Logs -out of iiQ; a d our failure t o change the addresses on the re*int l i s t s t h e b e t t e r - but space conserva t ion is t h e premium h e r e ) . I f t h i s themselves. The de-centralisstion of the jhmbership functions ~ f ~ r ~ ~ t e l y met with approach proved p r a c t i c a l , many DXers who d i d n ' t have t h e room f o r more than a few snaPus: missing names of new members on the front mge (our apologies) ' t h e r e a l t h i n g could perhaps use t h i s ins tead . The antenna would missd address changes, snd soma internal confusion, but most of this i s behind us be s i m i l a r t o loaded VHF antennae and i n theory it appeared p r a c t i c a l , now as we're 1/3 of the wpy through Volume 44. b u t would it work a t HF o r MW ( i f you p r e f e r ) f requencies .

Following the rapid grmrth during Volumes 42 and 43, our membership totnl has slacked off a bit, and has stabilized just short of the 700 figure we rwched for the f i r s t t ise in September of 1975. This i s due t o the n o m l at t r i t ion after 1-2 years of men;. bership by those who don't stick with the hobby enough t o maintain club membership combined uith the large nlimber of members who joined 1-2 years ago. No doubt also economic factors play some part in this, too.

Our bulletin content has been the same through Volume 43 as it was for Volume 42 in terms of approxbte ratios of ar t ic le page3 t o column pages, and of the breakdowns of the CO~UIIIU pages. Our to ta l page count for the year was 944, or 16 pages less than our projeotion. Our annual aim for the psst few years has been 20 small issues and 10 large ones, each presumbly 22. or 48 pages. Things being what they are, we fre- qua t ly have t o compromise as we have too much copy for a small issue and not enough for a large one, thus more issues in the 36/@/44 page range (4). Volume 43 also had 3 -ge issues, or , not enough copy on hand for full-sized s m l l issue. Pour support in terms df articles and column support w i l l t e l l if that situation changes

, for the comlng year.

We have gotten out bath a new d i t i a n of the Night. Pattern Book and a reu edition of the MU: Domestic Log during the p ~ s t Voluum Pear, and both contnin more useful. material than ever before.

We have also arranged for the orderly transition from the current publishers t o the new publishers, and in so doing, we w i l l be achieving even more de-centralisation. The Louisville group w i l l have t o concern themselvee priinarily uith only three of the Inany aspects of club operat ians which we took on in Volume 41 : General club oper- ations, b i i e t i n pblicatiorJdistribution, and trmsury. The latter, too, would have been removed from HQ save for a request that it co~ne al- t o Louisville as well.

A t p resen t , I have n o t s t r u n g more t h a t 703 f e e t , bu t it appears promising, and i n hopes of g e t t i n g o t h e r DXers t o t r y it, compare, t o o t h e r antennae ( loops, LW's o r t r u e beverage antenna

KARL JETER - 2816 Frontier T r a i l NE - Atlanta, bA - 30341 Greetings. I ' m f i na l ly out of school f o r the holidays un-

Last year I got 60 or so newies & I ' d l i k e t o top t h a t , but I ' m off t o a slow s t a r t so f a r as not much new i s coming down the wire. Here's recent s tuff : Cayman-1555 I s ; regular i n the eve & morn here, heard 11/26 well @ lOpm w/"time pips & in to BBC World Ser- vice. 11/27- R. Conora-675 Costa Rica noted well W/SS mx & IDS. Dakar- 764 11/27 a l so @ 12:57a, w/their IS, weak, but there . Whoops, Sonora's

* time was 12:45am. WKKO-860 FL heard W/ET/TT & I D @ 1:58. Also they had mx during that ET. One surprlsing th ing l a t e l y i s that Guinea-1403 i s about the best TA on almost any given night , even when CX a r e off & the regulars aren ' t heard, I can generally get audio, although weakly, from t h i s guy. Nust 've jumped up power, eh? On 11/29, during an SSS t ry , I heard WBUL-1220 AL w/s/off 5:45pm. I th3ught t h i s was a newie unt 11 I realized it was old WBVI. 12/6 brought unn WSGA-1400 well on top of the mess 8 1:13am w/"Gal Friday contest promo. Local NSPer wasn't NSP t h i s AM (12/6) as they were off , but had e i t h e r OC or TT most of time, so same difference, h i . I am mournin@: the loss of WSB's deceased MM SP - R. I.P. Back t o 12/6, Em. Monserrate-650 Colombia heard well B 3:20 w/ WSM off - frequent ment Ion of Bogota. 12/7 AM, KDFN-1500 heard w/s/on O/WTOP & WSB harmonic @ 7. This one plays a Kate Smith vers1on.of SW, also mentions KOEA-FM. Old t e s t f r iend WRBJ-1580 M I in t h i s AM, way o/ usual, 7:llam w/UX. Finally, WTAB-1370 NC noted w/ET/TT & I D B 1:25am on 12/11, t h i s unn also. Further comments on ve r i e returns. In the past , I have had much b e t t e r return. than here l a t e ly . I used t o get a- bout 60-655 re turn even a year ago, but I ' l l bet half tha t now. But I ' m stubborn ( fool ish?) enough t o keep a f t e r 'em as the ones two years ago I t h o u ~ h t I ' d never hear from did eventually answer. Only one ver ie in Dec., KTMN-1530.
