Head of School’s Newsletter February 2020
Dear Parent/Carer
Welcome back. I hope you all had a lovely half term holiday, despite the wind, rain and storm Dennis keeping
everyone wrapped up and staying in the warm.
Our enquiry question this term is ‘What’s beneath our feet?’ We will be learning about Palaeontology with a
particular focus on learning about dinosaurs. Each year group’s topic web is on our website for you to look at.

Staffing
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Miss Mullis into Wroughton Federation. Miss
Mullis has joined our team this week as teaching assistant in White Class. She has currently just
finished her teaching degree and will be working at Wroughton Infants until July.
Also I want to say a big congratulations to Miss Gomes, who has recently got marriage. Miss
Gomes’s married name is Mrs Desouza.
Friends at Wroughton Infants
Friends at Wroughton have bought the school 15 programmable toys. These programmable toys are
used as part of the computing programme where the children will learn about algorithms, creating
an algorithm and debugging it. During Fabulous Friday this term the children
will teach their parents all about algorithms
and how this resource has enhanced their
practical skills and knowledge with the
computing curriculum.
Thank you to all parents for investing and
supporting the school at the Friends of
Wroughton events.
Year 1 Phonics Parent Workshop
The Year 1 team are inviting parents to a Phonics workshop.
There are three session held.
On Tuesday 10th March at 5pm & Thursday 12th March at
9am there is a phonics workshop for parents. Staff will give
you all the information about how we teach phonics in school
and will discuss what the phonics screening paper looks like.
On Wednesday 11th March at 9am we are inviting parents
into the classrooms to observe one of the phonics lessons and see phonics in action. You will be
able to see the theory being put into practice. Please come along if you feel this would benefit you.
It will give you ideas on how to help your child with their reading at home.
Year 2 SATs Preparation
Not long now until May, when the Year 2 children will undertake their SATs. These are standard-
ised tests that the children will complete. This term the teachers and children will be working hard
to prepare for these. All the prep work will help give your child confidence when taking the tests.
Please help your child prepare by reading frequently and completing homework given. Reading
fluency is the key to helping all children to access the task ahead. Please help your child by encour-
aging them to read in their talking voice (not sounding out each word and reading from sight the
words) to help them prepare. This in turn will help children understand and comprehend what they
have read during the reading, grammar and maths paper.
The Year 2 team will be sending a letter out to invite parents to an Assessment Workshop. During
this session the teacher will go through what the papers look like and how they prepare your child.
The children will not know they are doing these tests as we like to organise it so the children are as
relaxed as possible. Therefore all children will be secret agents and will have to tackle the challeng-
es ahead to complete the mission. If your child comes home saying they have been secret agents
today then they have been practising their SATs. We would encourage you to use the same lan-
guage so that the children do not panic that they are being tested.
Many of the old SATs questions from the previous National Curriculum are online and if you wish to look at what the papers look like before the parent workshops. www.satspapers.org.uk The Parent workshop will be held on Wednesday 1st April at 9.30am and again at 5.30pm. Please sign up to a slot so we know how many people to cater for.
