Principle Accountabilities

Head of Department

The primary responsibilities of the Head of Department are to:

• Provide effective academic leadership, management and strategic direction for the Department across learning and teaching, research, knowledge exchange and academic enterprise so as to provide a high quality academic experience for students and a stimulating environment for the staff

• Support the Faculty PVC on all aspects of strategic planning, financial management, budgeting and deployment of staffing resources

• Demonstrate a continually developing high personal, professional and professorial standing in Sport and Exercise Sciences

• Take a lead role within the Department and across the Faculty for the Manchester Sport Initiative

• Take a lead role in establishing external networks with national sports bodies, developing partnerships as appropriate

• Deputise for the Faculty PVC as may be required.

Head of Department

Key Tasks

Play a full role in the management of the Faculty through membership of the Faculty Executive Group and, where appropriate, chair or participate in relevant Committees and working groups across the Department, Faculty or University.

As a member of the University’s senior staff team, play a full role in the corporate management of the University, engaging in the strategic planning process and ensuring team understanding of corporate, Faculty and Departmental direction and objectives - particularly in relation to the Manchester Sport Initiative.

Have line management responsibility for a team of academic staff and engage in activities such as recruitment and selection, performance management, academic and professional development of the team in line with University procedures.

Lead a team of staff at a time of significant transition, providing a positive personal example and engaging with the corporate change agenda.

Lead and support the academic and professional development of academic staff within the Department through regular, structured discussions in line with the University's Professional Development & Review (PDR) scheme.

Ensure that programmes are managed effectively according to University regulations, professional body accreditation requirements and relevant quality assurance procedures, ensuring a climate of continual improvement in the quality of taught programmes and appropriate engagement in programme development.

Maintain, develop and enhance the departmental course portfolio at all levels in the context of University objectives including widening participation, employer engagement, part-time and flexible delivery and overseas recruitment; monitor the financial and academic sustainability of the existing portfolio and propose revisions or closures of courses as necessary.

Work proactively to develop additional sources of income for research, knowledge exchange, consultancy, academic enterprise projects, short courses and taught programmes.

Ensure a high level of engagement by departmental staff in research, knowledge exhnage and academic enterprise activities.

Ensure that the University’s academic and other policies are fully and effectively implemented within the Department.

Ensure adherence to University financial procedures and regulations in respect of management of the Department’s budget and operating on a sound financial basis in respect of the Department’s operations and projects.

Ensure that value for money (VFM) is sought and achieved in the use of departmental budgets, including maintaining an awareness of good practice and ensuring that this, along with the procedures operated by the University to promote VFM, are followed effectively.

Promote the Department’s activities and reputation internally, nationally and internationally.

Special Features

This will be a rotational role for a period of 4 years after which the post holder will revert to a substantive academic contract commensurate with their academic standing.

A willingness to travel within the UK and overseas where necessary. A willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends where necesssary.

The Head of Department for Sport and Exercise Sciences will have a key role in the ongoing development of the University's Sport Initiative. They will lead on all aspects of the academic transition as the University prepares to deliver on the goals of the initiative. The Head of Department will act as Faculty Lead for the University's Sport Initiative and represent the University with key external partners as the inititive progresses.

Miscellaneous

You will ensure that appropriate management systems and procedures are in place to meet your health and safety duties and responsibilities contained within the University’s health and safety policy. In particular you will ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out in respect of significant hazards and that safety inspections are undertaken on at least an annual cycle in each workplace under your control.

You are responsible for:

• Assessing and managing risk for all elements of work within your own area and for ensuring effective risk management processes are in place across your department• Applying the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy in your own area of responsibility and in your general conduct• Promoting high levels of customer care within your own areas of work• Promoting public engagement as a key element of community involvement• Supporting and engaging in the University’s drive for continuous improvement through people management and development• Assessing the training and development needs of each member of departmental staff to ensure they are adequately supported in relation to their work responsibilities• Promoting and engaging in the University’s strategy and actions on environmental sustainability

You are expected to engage with the PDR process in relation to the setting of your own objectives with your manager to assist in the monitoring of your performance. In addition, you are expected to deliver the PDR process for your departmental staff and set appropriate objectives to assist in performance monitoring and the development of the individual.

Such other relevant duties commensurate with the grade of the post as may be assigned by the Line Manager in agreement with you. Such agreement should not be unreasonably withheld.

You may be, with reasonable notice, required to work at any of the Manchester Metropolitan University sites.
