Auditions are over and we are delighted to announce a 72 strong cast for our next production... Blitz Babies! Jess Watson will be overseeing the show and it will hit the stage at IGS on Wednesday 23rd November and will run for three nights. We are once again thrilled that two of our students have co-written the script. Rose Blackburn (12AJK) and Charlotte Armitage (12SSS) have penned a terrific script for our budding actors, dancers and singers to bring to life. Set in war torn Britain, ‘Blitz Babies’ tells the tale of a single mother from the city who has to make the agonising decision to give her baby away to her sister. What makes the decision even more heart-breaking is that it’s an attempt to make everyone happy. When WWII breaks out, the evacuation takes Tilly away from her mother, Eloise. Life is made easier for her when she befriends Charles, a mild mannered bookworm from the country. When it’s time to return to the city, Charles seeks an opportunity to escape from his miserable farm life but will things go to plan?

Charlotte and Rose are enjoying writing the script - ‘We’ve been working on the storyline for this play since last summer and have been writing together in the holidays and emailing scenes back and forth. We’re both super excited to be involved in another production and can’t wait to see it come to life.’ The lead roles of Tilly and Gus will be played by Annabelle Cole (8ASH) and Gus Lovell (7AW). Both are looking forward to the production.

Good luck Year 11 and Lizzie Armistead! Year 11 have worn their silver ties with pride throughout their time at IGS. However, this is their GCSE year…and they aim to follow in the hopes of Lizzie Armistead, our local sporting superstar who gained a silver medal in the London 2012 Olympics, and turn silver into gold. Our Year 11 students have all signed a card to wish Lizzie the best in her quest.

This week has been a celebration of Year 11 with a Sports’ Award Assembly on Wednesday and final assembly on Friday. Lessons carry on as normal next week and Year 11 study leave begins on Monday 23rd May when for most students attendance at normal lessons is optional: teachers will, however, be available in your normal timetabled rooms/times for specialist support and guided revision. A revision plan is available on the website here. Book collection day will take place on Thursday 17th June, after the Physics exam, and all school text books must be handed in to the Year 11 centre. The first GCSE exam takes place on Tuesday 17th May...good luck to our students and we look forward to celebrating their success with them on results day!

Head of Year Actual annual salary: £ 19,726 (Term time only, plus 5 days). Pattern of hours will be 37 hours each week: 8.00am to 4.00pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch each day and an early finish of 3.30pm one day each week

We are seeking to appoint, as soon as possible, an enthusiastic and adaptable non-teaching Head of Year. The successful candidate will have high expectations and an unwavering commitment to all students maximising their potential through outstanding support, encouragement, collaboration and mentoring. This role is integral to student achievement, with the main focus on providing the day to day support to students. You will report directly to the Director of Key Stage who will provide the strategic direction for this role. You will lead on behaviour and attendance, communication with parents and staff, and work with the administrative or data support, where necessary, to ensure all students within your Year group achieve their Personal Best. Non-teaching Heads of Year are new posts in September 2016, and Heads of Year will follow their group through the school to aid continuity. Summary of the post: student progress and achievement; behaviour, student welfare and attendance; communications and support the organisation of Key Stage events, trips and other enrichment activities. Congratulations to: Charlie Franks (11HGW); Jamie Spiller (10KL); Imogen Brodaty (10LV); Ellie Cooper (10JDA); Nathaniel Richardson (9PB); Amelia Milner (9PDH); James Holmes (9DSF); Finlay Tunney (9LG) and Nathan Foster (10MWC) who all qualified for the United Kingdom Mathematical Trust's (UKMT) Intermediate Challenge Kangaroo level. Each year over six million school pupils aged 5-18, from more than 50 countries throughout the world, take part at various levels. The UKMT has been involved in Kangaroo activities for many years and uses the hour-long multiple-choice papers (in English) as an extension to the Intermediate Challenge.

James, Charlie and Jamie achieved one of the higher merit level awards as a result of their scores being in the top 25% of this year's entrants. Congratulations also go Emmot Finch (9DSF) who received one of the higher merit level awards at the even more challenging Olympiad level. Only around 500 of the highest scorers in each school year nationally are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers which contain six complex mathematical problems for which full written solutions are required. This is a fantastic achievement for Emmot.

Good luck to Amber Woffindin (9DSF) who is competing in the U14 County Cup Tennis Finals in Nottingham on 13th- 15th May. It's an annual event where around 45 counties from England, Scotland and Wales compete in eight qualifying groups with the group winners progressing to the National Finals. Over the May Day weekend Amber played as number one for Yorkshire U14 girls in their group in Sunderland. She won all four singles and doubles matches against opposition from Hereford and Worcester, North of Scotland, Northumberland and Durham and Cleveland to help Yorkshire progress to the finals.

National Dwarf Games The Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSAuk) hosted the 23rd National Dwarf Games over the early May Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 30th April to Monday 2nd May at venues across the West Midlands. Over 190 athletes from around the world took part in the games, competing in 12 sports including track and field events sanctioned by the International Paralympic Committee, indoor sports, swimming and football. Our very own Savannah Troughton Webb (7DJJ) competed in the competition and did brilliantly. Savannah was awarded gold in shot put and gold in discus! Not content with topping 2 events she also entered the swimming event and secured 4th place. Well done Savannah.

Year 7 Cricket Yorkshire Cup Year 7 cricketers made a great start in the second round of the Yorkshire Cup beating Whitcliffe Mount by 6 wickets. Man of the match, Tom Dover, took 6 wickets and scored 19 runs. They played Bradford Grammar School on Tuesday afternoon in the third round of the Yorkshire Cup, but unfortunately BGS were too strong for us and we lost by 9 wickets.

The match finished IGS U12 XI 62-5 (20 overs), Bradford Grammar School U12 XI 66-1; BGS won by 9 wickets.

Congratulations to Lucy Haines (12SLG) and Laura King (12SLG) who teamed up with Airienteers club mate Evie Conway from Prince Henry's School, Otley to win the W18 class at the British Orienteering Relay Championships. The two day event was held at Brown Clee Hill in Shropshire. In the individual championships Lucy took bronze position in the W18E class and Laura was 5th.

Rounders News On one of the hottest days of the year and what can only be described as perfect rounders weather, our Year 7 rounders team played their first league fixtures. The girls played 3 matches and won all 3 of them! Their batting was extremely strong and consistent throughout all games. All the girls played brilliantly and represented school proudly. Player of the night, as voted for by the girls, was Bowler Amy Gott (7MPC). The full results were:

Well done to Alex Johnson (12LCM), Ollie Hopkinson-Cook (12PPB), Michael Moore (13PC) and Matthew Sykes (12AJK) from IGS who played their part in a thrilling final of the U18s boys’ Knockout Cup at Lee Valley Olympic Park on May 3rd.

Nerves from the team in the first 5 minutes, gave Surbiton opportunity to go 2-0 up following 2 penalty corners. The Ben Rhydding side then settled into the game, pulling a goal back later into the first half. Despite a pretty even game, Surbiton capitalised on two further breakaway goals, leaving a stunned Ben Rhydding 4-1 down at half time. Ever determined, the boys came back onto the pitch with renewed vigour after the break, giving their all to the delight of the army of Ben Rhydding supporters. They succeeded in pulling the score back to 4-4, despite players collapsing with cramp from their efforts! Alex made a couple of phenomenal saves in the final few minutes preventing the Surbiton team from nudging ahead; likewise the Surbiton goalie made an excellent save from Ben Rhydding's final penalty corner, meaning that the score at the end of play remained a 4-4 draw. The boys then had to face the ordeal of penalty shuffles (basically an 8 second, one on one between attacker and goalie). Ben Rhydding scored first to the delight of the crowd; Surbiton then put away 2 goals despite excellent defending from Alex Johnson.

The remaining Ben Rhydding players, despite one beating the goalie and then hitting the post, were unable to put away any more goals, leaving a final score of 2-1 to Surbiton. Being runners up in this competition is a phenomenal achievement for the boys; all but two of the squad are U17, meaning that they will compete again next year. Congratulations to Amelie Pardoe (7DJJ) whose book review has been published. Amelie entered her review to Oxford University Press who were publishing some old classics, simplified and designed to appeal to a younger audience. Amelie’s review was picked as the winner for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book and the prize was, alongside £100 worth of books to her primary school and a full set of all the books they were publishing, for her review to be included inside the front cover of the books as they went to print.

Congratulations to our intrepid scientists from Year 7 and 8 who competed at the annual Salters’ Festival of Chemistry held at the University of Bradford on Friday 29th April. Tomas Cesar de Sa (7AW); Freddie Charlesworth (8MH); Eloise Hall (8PO) and Emma Whitaker-Pitts (8MH) were selected from students who attend science club. They competed in two practical activities against 14 other schools. Marks were awarded for team work, good laboratory practice as well as the correct result. They missed out on a top three place in the first task but were awarded a special mention for their efforts because of how safely and carefully they worked. Pleasingly their hard work paid off in the second, more challenging task set by the university where they were awarded 2nd place. Well done!

Well done to our Year 10 girls’ rounders team who won all their matches on Wednesday night. They played four fantastic matches that finished:

Congratulations to Harri Pitches (13AH) and Will Lovell (12SLG) who are both starring in Noel Coward’s ‘The Vortex’ at the Ilkley Playhouse. The thrilling drama directed by Ilkley Playhouse’s Studio Theatre Director Damien O’Keefe has been enthralling audiences since Tuesday and will continue with a final show on Saturday night. Harri has been playing the charming and debonair Tom Veryan and Will has been cast as Nicky, the son of the main character, Florence. Tickets have now sold out for the play, so if you were lucky enough to get one...enjoy the show!

Year 9 Meningitis Vaccination Schedule Please see below the schedule detailing the Year 9 immunisation sessions on Thursday 26th May, Periods 1 to 4, for the Year 9 Booster and Meningitis vaccine (from 8.50-12.10pm) to be held in C8. There will be several nurses vaccinating and students should only be away from their lesson for a short time.

The next event in the Education Perfect World Series 2016 begins in just 6 days with the Language Perfect World Championships. The Language Perfect World Championships is a 10-day event - the biggest on the World Series calendar! It carries the most weighting in the overall standings, and offers students the chance to compete in any combination of the languages they offer - so, there’s no need to restrict yourself to just one! Any student interested in competing should head to N4 before the end of Friday 13th and see Diane Kitchen.

Make Ilkley Dementia Friendly As part of our Dementia Friendly Awareness week in May the local dementia group are consulting with the community about positives in Ilkley for people living with dementia and what they would wish for.

Part of their display involves a big dementia flower, based on their logo, which will be used for people to stick post-it note comments on. Charlotte Sayers (9PDH) and Beth Day (9PB) made the flower for the group to use and presented the finished artwork to Alison Neagle from the Ilkley Dementia group this week.

Career planning helps students to realise their ambitions — what they would like to do in their working life, which courses would suit them and which colleges/universities or businesses fulfil their needs. Each week, we hope to provide information that will help students along their journey ranging from apprenticeships, open days and insights into careers they may not have thought about.
