Countdown to Christmas The doors to All Saints’ Church were thrown wide open on Monday 14th December as they hosted our ‘Countdown to Christmas’ event. Reverend Patrick Bateman welcomed the congregation to an evening of carols, readings and music which involved both students from IGS and local primary schools. The evening included traditional carols alongside our classical guitar group, samba band, jazz ensemble and showstoppers choir. The evening closed with a collection for the

charity ‘School in a Bag’. According to UNICEF figures, 20% of the world’s child population will never attend school. ‘School in a Bag’ is a simple solution created to help poor, orphaned, vulnerable and disaster affected children throughout the world. Each school bag is filled with stationery, learning resources and eating utensils that will enable a child to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves and above all learn. ‘Countdown to Christmas’ is a fantastic way to end our school term and celebrate the start of the Christmas holidays. We were thrilled to hold the event at All Saints’ Church with our local primaries, it gives the evening a real sense of community spirit. A collection on the evening raised £354.43 and added to £106.66 raised by our iLeaders who sold Christmas candy canes, made a grand total of £461.09 for ‘School in a Bag’.

May The Force Be With You John Cockshaw and Simon Walpole have both had artwork accepted into an art display in the foyer of the National Media Museum to coincide with the release of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' on 18th December. The title of the event is 'The Fans Awaken: A Star Wars Art Celebration' and is on now until the end of January. Whether focusing on iconic villains or spaceships, they've both referenced the iconic imagery of the films in their drawings for the display. Simon in particular produced a clever idea of presenting his villain drawings in the manner of a criminal record book.

More information on the exhibit can be found here: www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk/planavisit/exhibitions/StarWarsTheFansAwaken

Thank you and well done to our Post 16 volunteers who helped the local Rotary Club and Ilkley Good Neighbours deliver Christmas parcels to the elderly and the vulnerable around Ilkley before Christmas.

Congratulations to our PE teacher Sarah Davies who has been representing a German weightlifting team KSV Grünstadt . The team took on their rivals AC Mutterstadt II in a recent competition and Sarah helped the German team secure a victory. On the last competition of the year, the KSV Grünstadt reached an outstanding victory. The understrength AC Mutterstadt II finished on 263.5 points but Grünstadt, with a little help from our PE teacher, romped home with 475.2 points Sarah impressed the audience with 87 kilograms in snatch and caused some excitement as she managed to finish her starting weight in the third attempt. Sarah who lifted 89kg and 113kg in Houston at the recent World championship wanted to prove herself...which she did in spades...good job Sarah!

Who spotted our PE teacher Sarah Davies on ITVs Ninja Warrior UK last Saturday night?

Yes our weightlifting champion tried her hand at the show’s devilishly tricky assault course...awesome attempt Sarah...definitely not for the faint hearted!

Sarah Davies!

2016 is a big year for Sarah Davies, it signifies the final leg of her journey on the road to Rio. 2016 is Olympic year, and for Sarah that could mean a trip to South America. The first big competition of the year is the European Championships in April where Sarah and her team will need to qualify for a team place. As the team didn’t qualify for any places at the World Championships in November, they can only secure a maximum of one female and one male place. The final push will take place at the British Championships at the end of June and it will be a real nail biter...down to who lifts the most weight to decide which female takes the top spot and that all important ticket to Rio! Good luck Sarah!

Community Alcohol Partnership A new partnership focused on driving down incidents of underage drinking and anti-social behaviour has been launched in Bradford District.

The Bradford District Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) will see police team up with local retailers, trading standards, health services, education providers and other local stakeholders to tackle these issues. There are currently more than 85 CAPs across the UK which use education, enforcement activity and training to achieve reductions in these areas. The partnerships also support local projects which work towards similar aims.

The Bradford District CAP has been established to ensure partners work together to address any issues with underage drinking across Bradford. Its emphasis will be on education in schools and preventative measures such as ‘Challenge 25.’ Partners will also meet regularly and share information regarding any emerging issues within the community, agreeing actions and strategies.

We have been asked to be involved in the initiative and will be issuing our Year 9, 10 and 11 students with a related survey in the coming weeks.

More information can be found here http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/news/new-partnership-focused-youth-alcohol-issues

Year 11 Resistant Materials GCSE 3D Printing We are delighted to share the work of two of our best GCSE students. Emily Robson (11LSL) and Lily Higgitt (11JI) have excelled at designing storage products for their target market using 3D computer aided design. Emily is working on storing hair and makeup accessories whilst Lily is making a CD and book holder. Both students demonstrate originality and creativity whilst managing the demands of project time limits. The prototype product has been printed in 3D to help visualise the final outcome.

The skills that this work requires provides ideal preparation for ‘A’ Level Product Design and we hope real world designing in their futures.

Year 12 A level Product Design Light Fantastic Here are the final products from our talented year 12 AS students. The challenge was to design lamps that utilised a Plug and Yoke system for heat forming acrylic. There has been a high level of manufacturing skill all around with excellent creativity particularly from Freddie Forbes and Roanna Holmes.

Freddie successfully invented his own mechanical system to make his work lamp adjustable.

Roanna decided to use LED strip lighting to provide an effective reading lamp. Gemma Levesley also created an original and unique concept using polypropylene strips to open and close the shade. The photo shows (left to right): Jared Smith (12TG) Decorative Room Lamp; Roanna Holmes (12SLG) Portable Reading Lamp; Robert Fisher (12RN) Desk Lamp; Jake Allister (12AJK) Decorative Room Lamp; Freddy Forbes (12RN) Adjustable Wall Mounted Work Lamp and Gemma Levesley (12TG) Decorative Room Lamp.

Signed, Sealed and Delivered! Congratulations to 20 students and 5 staff who studied a 5 week sign language course which finished just before Christmas. The course taught them how to sign keywords from the following categories:

Food and drink; feelings; family and friends; animals; colours and Christmas.

One of the course attendees, Abi Lafbery (13JLI) thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, ‘It was a wonderful experience with great practicability for the real world. Something to cherish and remember which could make a difference to a deaf person in the future.’

Christmas Constructions A group of Year 7 students joined the Maths team after school in December to create some Christmas decorations. Applying their shape and space knowledge and compass skills they accurately constructed a net that folded up to create a Christmas star design which they could then decorate to produce a reversible Christmas decoration. They produced some fantastic designs that they took away with them to add a bit of a mathematical twist to the decorations in their homes.

Honoured to be ex IGS!

We were delighted to hear that ex IGS student and founding member (CEO) of Code Club, Clare Sutcliffe, has been awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List for services to technology education. Code Club is a nationwide network of free volunteer-led after school coding clubs for children aged 9-11. They create projects for their volunteers to teach at after school coding clubs or at non-school venues such as libraries. Their projects teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites. Their aim is to put a Code Club in every single primary school in the country. There are over 21,000 primary schools in the UK, it’s a big task but they think they can do it! In November 2015 Code Club became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the combined aim of creating a Code Club in every community in the world. After leaving Ilkley Grammar School, Clare studied Graphic design at Bath Spa University, graduating in 2004. Clare has enjoyed enormous success in the world of IT and was recently named as one of the 50 most influential women in IT in the UK.
