FOR FOJAN, A SPECIAL MARE The crash of Comair Flight 5191 at Blue Grass Airportin the early morning hours of Aug. 27, 2006, was astriking blow to the people of Lexington. The Thorough-bred community wasn=t spared, as several well-re-spected horseman were among the casualties. Includedwas George Brunacini, who owned and operated BonaTerra Farm, a 200-acre commercial operation basednear Georgetown, Kentucky. Brunacini was a success-ful real estate developer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before launching Bona Terra in 1996. Among others,Brunacini bred GI Travers S. winner Flower Alley andGII Beaumont S. heroine Victory U.S.A. A year beforethe crash, Bona Terra sold Flower Alley=s dam, PrincessOlivia, to Japanese interests for $825,000. In addition to three daughters and a son, George leftbehind his fiance and partner of 10 years, Emilie Fojan,a soft-spoken, Austrian-born trainer. Hard as it was, especially in those early months,Fojan carried on under the Bona Terra banner. She soldoff some of Bona Terra=s best mares that November, and was still in the process of halving its 60-strongbroodmare band at Keeneland January when the 13-year-old Ascot Knight mare High in the Park went underthe hammer. She was one of the few mares to makeFojan=s short list. Fojan thought High in the Park wouldmake a fine replacement to some of the pricier maresshe was parting with, and was somewhat surprisedwhen she landed the mare for just $3,500. AI was sitting there in January, and I was just soupset,@ said Fojan. AI was literally sobbing in the pavil-ion, because we=d sold two mares before her and I wasthinking, >This isn=t really happening.= She was really theonly mare I wanted to buy.@

Quality is our Trademark

Fojan had a reason to like the mare. She had seenHigh in the Park=s fifth foal, a Chester House coltnamed Divine Park, work at Turfway Park, and thestrapping bay caught her eye with a snappy three-fur-long breeze in :34 and change. AI had seen that he had some great works other than

that one, and I was thinking thatmaybe I could get her,@ Fojanexplained. ALuckily for me, shehad slipped [her foal], and I thinkI was the only person on her andgot her for $3,500. I was thrilledto get her for so cheap, becauseI thought I was going to have tospend around $25,000 or so.@ Divine Park was an unracedthree-year-old when Fojan pur-chased his dam as EMFO Racing, but a month later, in February,

he debuted a winner at Aqueduct. Divine Park estab-lished a new track record at Keeneland winning hissecond outing, a seven-furlong allowance, and in histhird start he won the GIII Withers S. AHere we were selling all our good mares, and here Iam getting another good one,@ Fojan said. AIt was like itwas meant to be.@ This year, Divine Park notched an important victory inthe GI Met Mile and is now retired to Airdrie Stud tostand stud. AHe=s a beautiful animal; he=s just gorgeous,@ saidFojan. Divine Park=s success convinced Fojan that now isthe right time to sell his dam, and today, High in thePark, now 14, enters the ring at Fasig-Tipton as hip155. High in the Park is the lone horse in the EMFORacing draft at Fasig and is in foal to a leading juvenilesire in Medaglia d=Oro on a Mar. 10 cover. AI was lucky that I liked Medaglia d=Oro, because Ibred her back to him and he=s having such a greatyear,@ said Fojan. AIt=s a beautiful match and she=s infoal on an early cover.@

Fojan does have some reservations about the currenteconomic climate, though. AI don=t know what the market=s going to be like, because everything=s so up and down,@ she said. ABut Ifeel like I=m not going to just let her go because of theeconomy. If she doesn=t bring what I think she should,I=ll just bring her home and have the baby.@ These days, Bona Terra is home to about 20 or 25mares, and Fojan still trains young horses at the Ken-tucky Training Center on Paris Pike. AI=ve kept on trucking as best I could,@ she explained.AI always trained the leftover babies that could not besold, and now I=ve got a few great clients. We do a lotof breaking and legging up and getting them ready, andthen they go on to do bigger and better things.@ As she was preparing to send High in the Park toFasig last week, Fojan reflected on the day back inJanuary in 2006 when she first purchased the mare. AI liked her, but for some reason it was like I had tohave her,@ Fojan said. AIt was so strange because sheturned out to be a really nice mare.@ She adds with alittle laugh, ASometimes there is help from above.@

Sara Louise hinted at potential in her 5 1/2-furlongAug. 28 Saratoga bow, closing from a 14-length deficitto finish fourth, beaten 3 1/4 lengths by subsequent

GI Darley Alcibiades S.runner-up Be Smart (SmartyJones). The bay followedwith a seven-furlong maidenvictory at Belmont Sept. 21,and was called up to the bigleagues here. Breaking fromthe dreaded one-hole in thiseight-furlong contest, shewas handled patiently byRobby Albarado, sitting in

sixth through fractions of :23.29, :46.63 and 1:10.60.Mildly urged on the turn for home, she enhaled theleaders while racing five wide, ducked in briefly afterstriking the front at the top of the lane, and drew awayimpressively once straightened out. Sara Louise maystart next in the GII Golden Rod S. at Churchill Nov. 29.AWe=ll talk about it with Mr. Luke and with Bill Gravesto see if that makes sense or just put her up for the restof the year and get her ready for Gulfstream,@ DaleRomans said. It wasn=t the best of trips for slightlyfavored Rachel Alexandra, who was caught in traffic onthe turn for home and was later bumped in the stretchby the tiring Petty Things (Put It Back), but was unableto match strides with the victress once clear.

COOLMORE ASCOT VALE S. cont. At only his fifth outing, the immensely excitinghomebred Northern Meteor lived up to expectations, scoring a half-length victory in a race that has produceda bevy of successful stallions including his own sire, who won the sprint for trainer Lee Freedman in 1996.Hailed as the emerging spring pin-up horse after stargalloper Weekend Hussler (Aus) ended his spring cam-paign, Northern Meteor crash-landed with aplomb atFlemington less than three months after making hisrace debut. Bred by Eduardo Cojuangco=s Gooree Stud,Northern Meteor was an ignominious seventh of nineon debut Aug. 7 at a Sydney midweek meeting, andhad excuses when third at his second midweek outingAug. 27. He figured it out during a six-week let-up andreturned to the same Canterbury track to win hismaiden Oct. 8 in track record time, before repeating thedose in the Listed Brian Crowley S. Oct. 18. It was thenthat connections revised plans for the colt to contest aListed provincial feature and targeted the CoolmoreStud S.

Ascot Ambitions... Sent straight to the grandstand side of the straightand kept under a tight hold by jockey Nash Rawiller,Northern Meteor stayed out of trouble and was allowedhis head at the 200 meter mark, with fellow Sydneysophomore Fist of Fury hot on his heels. AHe=s an ex-tremely promising horse and he has plenty of scope forimprovement,@ Rawiller commented. AHe has a sensa-tional sprint but he might get over further as he devel-ops.@ Waterhouse has suggested the colt is an idealprospect for Royal Ascot=s Kings Stand S. and GoldenJubilee S. AN AMERICAN IN MELBOURNEBy Bill Finley The Melbourne Cup isn=t on the radar of most Ameri-can owners, which is probably a mistake. The purse isabout $3.6 million, it=s as prestigious as any race in theworld, it attracts crowds in excess of 100,000 and anytop-class American horse with the staying power toexcel at two miles is bound to have a solid chance. It'sa challenge worth tackling, which hasn't escaped atleast one American owner. Earle Mack, who is the senior partner and CFO of aNew Jersey-based commercial real estate developmentfirm and has campaigned numerous stakes winners, isquietly confident that his racing stable is about to landits biggest prize yet. Mack owns Mad Rush, the secondchoice in early betting for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup atFlemington Racecourse. Mad Rush, who was bred inKentucky by Avalon Farm, would not be the first Ameri-can-bred to win the Melbourne Cup, but Australianracing officials have told Mack that he would be thefirst American owner to win the race. "It's an honor and a privilege to bring a horse here,"Mack said by phone from Melbourne. "I feel like I'mrepresenting my country. To me, it would be like win-ning the Ryder Cup or an Olympic gold medal. To winthis would be a special thrill for me." Mack bought Mad Rush at the 2005 Keeneland Sep-tember yearling sale for $80,000 and sent him to Eng-land to be trained by Luca Cumani. A late-developingson of Lemon Drop Kid, Mad Rush didn't start until histhree-year-old season and won only one of four startsthat year, earning just $15,326. He hit his stride thisyear and has been at his best in long distance races. When he finished second in the Group 2 Prix Kergolay,a mile-and-seven-eighths race run in August atDeauville, Mack and Cumani knew they had a seriousMelbourne Cup contender. Mad Rush competed next in the 1 1/2-mile G1 Caul-field Cup, the main prep for the Melbourne Cup, andfinished fourth. But he was closing strongly inside thefinal 200 yards, performing like a horse who was cryingout for more distance. "Luca feels he'll be much better at two miles," Macksaid. "And he's yet to have a chance to run at twomiles." He was ridden in the Caulfied Cup by top Australianjockey Damien Oliver, who will also be aboard for theMelbourne Cup. Oliver is a two-time Melbourne Cupwinner. "I feel he's definitely come on," Oliver told Australianreporters last Wednesday after working Mad Rush. "Idon't think he needs to make much improvement. Hefeels just as good if not a bit better than he did at Caul-field."Writers Up cont.

For Mad Rush, a difficult assignment has becomeeasier in recent days. Caulfield Cup winner All the Good(Ire) (Diesis {GB}), who is part of the potent Godolphinteam, has been scratched due to a foreleg injury and2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient was also a recentdefection. Still another top contender, Yellowstone, hasbeen battling a hip injury, but is expected to run. "You hate to see good horses drop out because youunderstand about the hopes and dreams of the peopleinvolved," Mack said. "It took years to develop thesehorses from the time they were yearlings. But that'swhat happens in this sport. You hope for the best andprepare for the worst." The likely favorite is Septimus (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells),from the Coolmore team who romped by 13 lengths inthe Irish St. Leger in September. Like Mad Rush,Septimus has had to go through a lot to get to theMelbourne Cup. The trip from Europe is a long one andthe foreign horses are required to train at a quarantinecenter. That worries Mack, but he has confidence in hishorse. "I am guardedly optimistic about our chances ofwinning," he said. "It's a tough field. The racing here istop quality. Horse racing is so important to the peoplein Australia and that's why they keep investing a lot ofmoney in farms and breeding. They are buying horses inAmerica and Europe and they are breeding to many ofour stallions who have become shuttle stallions." Mack knows that Mad Rush has been handed a diffi-cult assignment. But he also knows that he has a horsewho can handle the task to come. Someday, an Ameri-can is going to break through at the Melbourne Cup.Earle Mack would be delighted to be the one.

NYRA Launches Jockey Health Programs: The New York Racing Association announced it hasimplemented two programs to ensure the best carepossible when a jockey is injured. NYRA racetracks willnow use the Jockey Health Information System, asecure online database which was first implemented atthe recently concluded Keeneland Fall Meeting. Thesystem stores jockeys= updated medical histories andallows emergency medical personnel at racetracks toinstantly access that information in the event of injury.Additionally, NYRA launched the Jockey Medical Advo-cate Program with the start of the Aqueduct Fall Meet-ing Oct. 29. Registered nurses serving as medical advo-cates will be on-call during all NYRA races. In the caseof injury, the medical advocate will meet the injuredrider at the hospital to ensure he or she receives goodcare, and will also assist the jockey and family mem-bers with medical and administrative matters. AWe verymuch appreciate the leadership of The Jockey Club andKeeneland in developing the Jockey Health InformationSystem and are proud that, along with the JockeyMedical Advocate Program, we=ve taken significantsteps forward in supporting the health and welfare ofthese jockeys,@ said NYRA Senior Vice President ofHuman Resources and Labor Relations David Smukler.Additional information about the Jockey Health Infor-mation system is available here.

CONGRATULATIONS from Fasig-Tipton’s own

Graded Stakes Winning Star of the Week:

i SARA LOUISE i

Pocahontas S. -G3

Congratulations to her connections!

AlainWertheimerAccomplishment: Alainand his brother Gerard ownGoldikova (Ire) (Anabaa),who won the GI Breeders’Cup Mile Oct. 25.Birthdate: Sept. 28, 1948.Birthplace: New York City.Current Residence: NewYork City. Why did you select theBreeders’ Cup Mile as atarget for Goldikova?Because I’ve been living inthe United States for a longtime and I think theBreeders’ Cup Classic andMile are some of the most

prestigious races. If she’s in good shape, I’d love to come back next year. And at Santa Anita [during the Breeders Cup], we’ve raced three times and won three times. (The Wertheimers’ other Breeders’ Cup wins came in the 1993 GI Turf with Kotashaan (Fr) (Darshaan {GB}) and the 2003 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with Halfbridled (Unbridled). How many horses do you own now? Around 120 or 130. Basically, we have about 70 births of foals per year. We breed horses in the U.S. in Lexington at Hagyard Farm and in Europe.First win as an owner? [My brother and I] took over the family operation. It really didn’t matter if my father won or my grandfather would win. It made no difference to me because it was always exciting. How has racing changed since you first got involved? When I first started, you had more family-operated involvement. Now you have fewer traditional operations, but you still have some families like the Phipps family. What is your favorite racetrack and why? If I don’t say it’s Longchamp, people will complain! But I really like Santa Anita because the weather is great and there’s the view of the mountains. And then there’s Belmont. What is your favorite vacation spot? Deauville in Normandy. Or Lyford Cay in the Bahamas. I also like Vail.Favorite book: It’s too hard to name just one. I read a book a week. Mostly history books, all from the Middle Ages to Egyptian history to modern history.Favorite food or meal? A good steak. Black and blue. Most fascinating backstretch character you’ve met? Alec Head.
