I spent hundreds of hours researching synthetic sur-face tracks and the No 1 conclusion I came to is thissynthetic surface racing isn=t that different from con-ventional dirt racing At every synthetic meet the per-centage of winning favorites has hovered around theindustry standard of 30 percent and the vast majorityof horses handle the transition from dirt to syntheticand vice versa just fine It happened again earlier thismonth in the $400000 Presque Isle Downs Masterswhere Wild Gams (Forest Wildcat) won by a half-lengthShe has won two of five starts (40 percent) on syn-thetic tracks and seven of 20 starts (35 percent) onconventional dirt Her career-best Beyer number on dirtis a 102 on synthetic tracks it is a 101 Clearly she isno better on one surface than the other Wild Gamsrepresents the rule far more than the exception Some people get it Eoin Harty wasn=t afraid to enterColonel John (Tiznow) in the Travers even though hiscolt didn=t run well in the Kentucky Derby the onlyprior time he had tried a dirt surface They were re-warded with a career-making win The IEAH Stablesteam has never wavered in its commitment to run BigBrown (Boundary) in the Breeders= Cup Classic Some people don=t Jess Jackson is saying that heprobably won=t run Curlin (Smart Strike) in the Breeders=Cup Classic because he is uncertain how his horse willperform over a synthetic surface Passing the Classicwith a horse of Curlin=s ability (he would be the favoritein a $5-million race isn=t that reason enough to run)
