NOVEMBER 2010 - ISSUE 19

In celebration of ten successful years of Luminus changing the world where we are, Luminus employees, residents and non-executives enjoyed a day of training on a tour of local development and community sites.

Inspiring OthersBeing able to inspire others is part of the Luminus way of doing things. It’s important we do this especially since there is so much discouragement around and we believe it’s our responsibility to do as much as we can to help.

Luminus, the UK’s No. 1 for leadership, work-life balance and a company run on strong moral principles is celebrating again with two of its subsidiaries scooping prizes at Fenland Business Awards 2010.

Keith Smith, Director of Ferry Project and HOPE Social Enterprises achieved the accolade of the Business Person of the Year Award, in recognition of his dedication, commitment and hard work in founding homeless charity Ferry Project, while HOPE was runner-up in the Social Enterprise category for contributing to the economic, business, social and environmental growth of Fenland.

In 2010, Ferry Project opened Octavia View, a community centre at the heart of Wisbech that will provide accommodation for up to 24 homeless people, a community café, a shop run by HOPE Social Enterprises, conference rooms for hire and many other facilities.

The Grade II Listed building has been beautifully and sensitively restored to preserve the original features including a carved ceiling and ornate fireplaces for local people to enjoy.

HOPE provides work experience to the long-term unemployed, while benefitting the local community and environment through reusing and recycling items that will otherwise go into landfill. 2010 has also been a very successful year for HOPE as they have opened Renewal Park.

The site comprises three warehouses which has allowed HOPE to expand operations and lease space to other local social enterprises.

Fenland Business Awards Success

Luminus employees have embraced the idea of giving something back to the community by raising and donating over £2000 for local charities.

At two presentation ceremonies, representatives from the Huntingdonshire Society for the Blind, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Leonard Cheshire and Christians Against Poverty were welcomed to Brook House by over 230 Luminus employees and guests to receive their £500 cheques at the monthly Luminus Conference.

In addition to these four fantastic charities, Luminus has also supported locals woman Ann Bentley, who is undertaking the 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of Diabetes UK.

Giving Something Back

When children returned to Eynesbury C of E Primary School after the summer break, they discovered a new member of the school community waiting for them on the playing field – a giant!

Luminus and HDC funded the project through Voice Your Choice scheme and local residents elected to give the school £4,600 towards a sculpture celebrating the ‘Eynesbury Giant’. Eynesbury C of E School were one of thirty community projects to receive a share of £70,000 during Voice Your Choice, a scheme designed to support groups who tackle issues such as employment, education, skills and training, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, improving transport and mobility, enhancing the environment and community empowerment.
