Commander’s Corner Dear Post 160 Legion Family:
April is an important month for the
Post. Qualifying will take place this month for Post
elections to be held in May.
The Election Board is up in the Social Quarters
beginning 1 April. This is where members can sign
up to run for one of the elected Officer positions.
The Officer positions up for election are:
• Commander
• Senior Vice Commander
• Junior Vice Commander - Ballroom
• Junior Vice Commander – Social Quarters
• Adjutant
• Finance Officer
• Sergeant At Arms
• Executive Committee Member (x 3)
The qualification to be elected is that one must be a
member of the American Legion and in good
standing at Post 160. Duties and responsibilities for
each position will be taught to interested
members. No special skills are necessary.
Officer positions generally require the volunteer to
be able to devote several hours a week to Post
business at the Post. Members should have a
"Servant Heart" to help Veterans and the
membership.
I promise you the work is rewarding and
satisfying. Helping Veterans and being around
Veterans is always a wonderful thing. As a leader
of Post 160, you contribute to the success of the
Post and help the local community.
The Officers function as a team, a skill every
Veteran understands and does well. When everyone
contributes, no one person has to bear the burden of
trying to do too much. I encourage EVERY
member to consider how they can help and serve
Post 160 and be involved in some way.
The Election Board will be brought into the April
General Membership meeting. Nominations will be
taken from the floor during the meeting. Any
member nominated from the floor must agree to run
for election and for his/her
name to be added to the
Election Board. Nominations
will then be closed
and the names on the Board
will stand for election at the 21
May General Membership meeting.
Thanks are due to Past Post/District/Department
Commander Bill Lienhop for again serving as the
Chair of the election process.
Other Officer and Committee Chair positions are
appointed by the Commander. Appointed Officers
include:
• Chaplain
• Historian *
• Judge Advocate *
• Service Officer *
• Assistant to the Finance Officer
• Assistant to the Adjutant
• Assistant to the Junior Vice Commander -
Ballroom
• Assistant to the Junior Vice Commander –
Social Quarters *
Appointed Committee Chair positions include:
• Food Pantry
• Audit *
• Employment *
• Membership *
• Others as Designated by the Commander
Positions marked with an asterisk (*) are currently
vacant. Please consider how you can help the Post
and sign up to run for a position. If you would
rather serve in an appointed position, please see any
Officer to discuss your interest and get your
questions answered.
Moving on to other subjects....
Thanks are due to SAL Squadron 160 for hosting
the St. Patrick's Day festivities in the Social
Quarters. We appreciate everyone who came out to
have fun and support the Post.

Chaplain's Corner
John F. Burns, a writer for The New York Times, in
a 11 January 2010 article, tells us about the
conviction of five Muslim men in Luton, England.
Luton is located 30 miles north of London. They
were convicted of harassment and using insulting
language during a protest they had staged at a parade
welcoming British troops home from Afghanistan.
The men had shouted slogans describing the soldiers
as “murderers,” “rapists” and “baby killers.”
The convicted men – who had refused to stand for
the judge in court, saying Islam forbade showing
respect to anybody but the Prophet Muhammad,
were unrepentant after the verdicts. Outside the court
they waved a placard that said, “Islam will
Dominate!” and “Freedom can go to Hell!”
Interesting rantings considering their lawyer used a
defense of their right to speak whatever they wanted
due to Britain’s liberal free speech laws.
In Britain and in America, this free speech “right”
was not free – it cost the lives of thousands upon
thousands of men and women military veterans who
stood in harm’s way for the rest of us. This is how it
is done folks, cowards hiding behind and using the
freedoms we have that were given to us by the blood
of patriots that did not love what was on the
battlefield in front of them but what they had left
behind them.
Their goal is to undermine and destroy the very
values and beliefs that our Country was founded
upon. These cowards are the first to shout and
scream using the cancer we have in this Country
known as political correctness, “We are a minority,
how dare you pick on us!” The media jumps on it
with a feeding frenzy, think Jussie Smollett in
Chicago.
The Luton, England rally appeared to have inspired
the announcement by an Islamic radical group,
Islam4UK, to have a march through the town of
Wootton Bassett to honor the “real” victims of the
war in Afghanistan, whom the group identified as
Muslims killed by Western troops. Islam4UK had
praised the perpetrators of the 09-11 attacks in the
United States as heroes.
Thankfully, England’s senior government officials
said they would ban the march.
This refusing to recognize the sacrifices of our
current military serving our Country and refusing to
recognize those men and women that served in the
past – this could not happen in post 9-11 America,
could it? This shunning of our American heroes,
could not happen after the horrors of 9-11, could it?
My wife and I were at Kennestone Hospital some
three months ago, visiting Post 160 hospitalized
veterans. I had the Legion cover on – it was obvious
that I was a veteran. While walking down the
hospital’s main corridor, a young lady with the
headscarf of a Muslim was walking past. As she
passed me, she shielded her face with her hand so as
not to look at me.
President Abraham Lincoln said, “America will
never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and
lose our freedoms, it will be because we allowed
ourselves to be destroyed from within.”
On September 12, 2001 Americans said , “We will
never forget!” I think on their drive to the shopping
mall, Americans forgot something.

Commander’s Column Continued
On April 13th, ALA Unit 160 will host the 3rd An-
nual Casino Night Fundraiser benefitting Special
Olympics GA-Cobb. See the flyer later in this edi-
tion of The Smyrna Legionnaire and please plan to
attend and support this worthy cause. You are guar-
anteed to experience a great evening of fun.
I want to thank DJ Reggie Davis and many others
for the great Karaoke Contest held in February and
March in the Social Quarters. The contest con-
cluded on March 15th with a packed house on hand
to hear the finalists. Another contest should start
soon, perhaps this time featuring duets. Come out
and listen and have fun!
The City of Smyrna will host its annual Spring
Jonquil Festival April 26th thru April 28th. Mem-
ber Donavan Wade will again chair our effort to
host a Legion Family booth in front of the Smyrna
Community Center. This is the premier event for
the Post to be visible in the community and we add
new members to the roster of each of the Legion
Family organizations. It lets the community know
about the American Legion and how we serve. It is
fun to meet new people and to talk about the Post.
Please consider volunteering to staff the booth for
one or more shifts – there will be a sign-up sheet
posted in the Social Quarters. A shift can be what-
ever time you can give, typically 2 hours. Thank
you for helping us!
Thanks also to Keep Smyrna Beautiful for donat-
ing several dozen trees to Post 160. The trees were
planted around the property on March 21st by a
team from Home Depot, coordinated by Finance
Officer Paul Radomski, assisted by Senior Vice
Commander Nick Wegner and Sergeant At Arms
Alan Toon. The tree plantings were done in honor
of the American Legion Centennial. We hope to
dedicate the trees in a ceremony coinciding with the
5th District Homecoming Dinner on 4 May at the
Post. Stay tuned for more information about this!
Thanks to the Home Depot Team - several associ-
ates came to Post 160 on March 21st for a day of
service. They completed many projects around the
exterior of the Post including removing trash and
debris, pressure-washing the building, planted the
trees from Keep Smyrna Beautiful, placing mulch
and more. Post 160 is very fortunate to have this
volunteer assistance to refresh our building and
property as for the Spring Season. See photos on
Page 9.
Coinciding with the American Legion Centennial is
an event on April 18th at 11:00 am at Greenwood
Cemetery in SW Atlanta. A ceremony will be held
to honor Nurse Camille O'Brien, a member the
Emory Hospital Unit that deployed overseas in WW
I to support the troops. She served at Base Hospital
43 in Blois, France. When the Emory Unit came
home after the war, Nurse O'Brien volunteered to
stay behind to care for the many Soldiers suffering
from the massive influenza outbreak. Sadly, she
caught spinal meningitis and died in early
1919. Nurse O'Brien was the only Nurse from
Georgia who died as a result of WW I.
Nurse Camille O’Brien was brought home in 1921
and unfortunately, buried in an unmarked grave.
This will be corrected on April 18th as descendants
of the Emory Hospital Unit's Commander and of
Nurse O'Brien will be in attendance as the Ameri-
can Legion was when Nurse O'Brien came home,
and again, will be present when her headstone is
dedicated. Look for more information about this
event later in the newsletter. If you can attend this
ceremony, I highly encourage you to do so. Let us
honor this brave and dedicated Nurse and ensure her
sacrifice is never forgotten.
It is my honor to serve and represent Post 160, and I
thank you for your help and support. I hope to see
you at the Post.

New Fundraising/Sponsorship Committee for Post 160
Post 160 is forming a new Fundraising/Sponsorship committee to help raise needed funds to support the Post
and its veterans. We are seeking volunteers to actively participate in this initiative. Some of the responsibilities
will include soliciting donations, selling advertising space in our newsletter, selling raffle tickets and helping to
coordinate and participate in fundraising activities. The goal would be to raise $50,000 annually. If you are in-
terested, please contact Paul Radomski at email: [email protected]
Support Boys and Girls State of GA
Each year, Post 160 sponsors local high school students to spend a few days in Washington, DC. Our goal for
2019 is to sponsor ten students. The cost to sponsor one student is $250. If you would like to sponsor a student,
please donate $250 to Post 160 and specify that it is for Boys and Girls State. As of the end of February 2019,
we have received donations that will allow us to sponsor three students.
ALA Supports Troops In March we celebrated the American Legion on 100 years of service to our country, to our communities, and to
our Veterans. We remember and thank each service member and their families for their dedication to our coun-
try! We thought you might like to see some of our current heroes! Here is the unit we adopted for Christmas
and sent over 800 coffee pods and miles of Clorox wipes too!

DPAA Makes 200th Identification from USS Oklahoma Unknown Remains
By DPAA Public Affairs
Sean Patterson, Armed Forces Medical Examiner System Department of Defense DNA
Quality Management Section DNA Analyst, replaces U. S. Navy Fireman 1st Class
Billy James Johnson's picture background, signifying him as an identified service
member who was previously missing in action. Johnson marks the 200th service mem-
ber to be identified following the December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack where 429
U.S. Sailors and Marines were killed on the USS Oklahoma (BB-37). (U. S. Air Force
photo by Staff Sgt. Nicole Leidholm)
Arlington, Virginia, March 8, 2019 —
A series of large posters hang in the conference room of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory
located at Offutt Air Base, Nebraska. The heading on each of the posters states “USS OKLAHOMA.” Under-
neath the headings are neat rows of printed rectangular frames. Each one represents a person who was unac-
counted for when the USS Oklahoma was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,
1941.
Some of the frames show a U.S. Navy logo or U.S. Marine Corps insignia. Some of the rectangles show a photo
of a serviceman, usually in military uniform. Nearly 400 frames cover the posters. For the team of scientists

A Call for Volunteers Post 160 is run by volunteers for volunteers – as part of the larger whole – an organization devoted to mutual
helpfulness. Many hands make for light work. Each time there is an event, do you see the same people serving
food, setting up, cleaning up? These folks have formed friendships and bonds and have fun serving the Post.
They would welcome more helping hands to join the teams as the Post takes on more opportunities to serve
members, veterans, and to reach out into the community to serve. Do you know people that could join you in
serving? The Post needs volunteers every night we are open. All volunteers should be over 18. Please call the
post or send a note to the Commander or First Vice Commander.
The phone number is 770-436-2501. [email protected]
