Just as speaker positioning is important for large Just as speaker positioning is important for large speakers in a listening room, it is also important speakers in a listening room, it is also important on your desktop. Properly positioned ‘near fi eld’ on your desktop. This has a number of advantages. This has a number of advantages.Possibly most important is that it signifi cantly reduces the fi rst refl ection of sound waves off the desktop surface. When speakers are low and close to the desktop this fi rst refl ection almost completely destroys any audio image!Once the speakers are off the desk surface, the real work of tweaking the audio image can begin by adjusting the height and tilt of the speakers, and the distance, width, and toe-in.

Generally speaking, you should position the speakers such that the speaker’s acoustic axis is horizontal and at ear level. On small two-way speakers the tweeter virtual sound source is usually slightly closer to you than the woofer virtual sound source. This means that the center axis of sound coming from the front of the speaker is tilted slightly downward, and that you should tilt the speakers slightly back in order for the speaker axis to be horizontal. In order to fi ne tune the tilt of your speaker, set the speakers in roughly the correct position and then raise and lower your head to fi nd the best sound. Usually if the tweeter is too close it will sound slightly too ag-gressive and you will have to tilt the speaker rearward; if the woofer is too close it will sound slightly muffl ed.To adjust the stands simply loosen the knobs on both sides and slide the top part of the stand up and down, and/or tilt it forward and back. DO NOT adjust stands up and down with speakers on them. You can, however, make small tilt adjust-ments by partially loosening the clamping knobs and then tilting the speaker back and forth. Be sure to take your speak-ers off the stands before making any adjustments.

Generally speaking the speakers should be about an arms reach distance. A good way to determine if the stands are equidistant from you is to reach out and touch the stands with both hands at the same time; sometimes closing your eyes helps to tell if the stands are in exactly the same spot to either side. The speakers should be positioned roughly in an equilateral triangle. Speakers are generally toed-in to point just wide of the ear closest to the speak-er. This is a good starting position, but additional tweaks may be required. If the image isn’t deep enough, push the speakers farther away. If the im-age has a hole in the middle, push the speakers closer together. If the sound isn’t punchy enough, move them closer to you. If the soundstage is to narrow, push the speakers farther apart.
