Our liturgical year You can keep up to date with daily news via our twitter page (@stbedes1957).

Jess wins the top award at our celebration evening

The incredible Jess Beselga was awarded the Headteacher’s Award at our annual awards evening on

November 8th. Jess was working at her father’s restaurant on the evening so was unable to attend. She

was shocked to receive both the Headteacher’s Award and the award for English Literature. Mrs Wren,

when awarding the latter, expressed her admiration for Jess having overcome great personal loss to be

one of our top performers in the Class of 2018. I can only admire her strength and resilience which is a

genuine inspiration to us all. We now hope that Jess will be back in to inspire more students in the future

about how she overcame great adversity to achieve success. Having met with Jess and her proud father,

it is clear that she will go on to be a great business woman of the future and without doubt, make the

world a better place.

Y10 girls get to grips with handball Tuesday 28th November saw the year 10 girls take part in their annual handball competition at Lathom

High School. The team consisted of Melissa Willis, Roksana Krol, Martha Owens, Isaeblla Penswick, Reine

Kelly, Isabella Murray, Sharna Garforth and Jessica Hodge. The girls played three incredibly fast paced

matches where they were able to demonstrate their agility, power and speed throughout. Although the

games were tough, the girls showed outstanding determination along with some very impressive striding

jump shots which meant they won all three games and became district handball champions! A huge well

done girls!

Sam in Y11 passes his driving test It is not often a current student passes their driving test however last week Sam Vose passed his tractor

driving test. This is a great achievement for Sam and hopefully the first of many steps towards his future

in agricultural and livestock. Our vision of world class is seen in so many forms and this great

achievement for Sam is just one of them. Well done Sam from all at St Bede’s.

More money raised for CAFOD In October we held a loose change collection for Cafod, which raised £131. A number of pupils brought in

large amounts of copper coins from home. Thanks to all who donated and to the staff in the finance

office who counted it!

Primary maths event = a good time for all! Last week we held our annual primary maths event. The event was attended by several local primary

schools that all competed for the top prize. All of the children were a credit to their schools. They were all

winners in our book although Our Lady’s All Saints from Parbold scooped the top prize. Well done to all

involved!

MFL News On Friday 2nd November, the very talented Onatti theatre company came to school to present their

French play La salle des énigmes (the break out room) to our year 9, 10 and 11 pupils! The actors spoke in

French throughout, but amazingly, we think our pupils managed to follow what was going on.

We were delighted in the MFL department to see so many St Bede’s pupils taking part during the

performance. Bravo!

Next Friday 7th December, we will be hosting our annual MFL Weihnachtsmarkt for pupils and staff!

Letters will be going home with more details very soon!

Sports hall athletics success Tuesday 20th November saw a very successful night in the Year 8 sports hall athletics event. The team

consisted of 16 athletes who took part in a variety of track and field events, many of whom won first

place. Overall the girls’ team came second and the boys’ team came first meaning they will now

represent the district in the county championships later in the year! It was an excellent display by all the

athletes involved who showed determination, strength and sportsmanship throughout the night. The

year 8 girls’ team consisted of Isla Fearon, Anna Woods, Grace Hayes, Sade Lawal, Katie O’Neill, Bethany

McCluskey, Faye Lovatt and Maisy Murphy. The year 8 boys’ team consisted of Josh Jackson, Jack Rogers,

Jack Vose, Sam Brown, Rhys Jones-Kent, Luke Grundy, Will Jackson and Sam Merriman. The night was

run by the school sports partnership and couldn’t have gone ahead without some excellent athletics

leaders who made sure the night ran smoothly. The year 10 athletics leaders were Martha Owens,

Connie Roberts, Olivia Johnson and Erin Higham. A huge well done to all involved!

Pudsey Bake Sale

By Sophie Orledge 7CA On Monday 12th - Wednesday 14th November we held a bake sale for Children in Need. So, first of all, I

would like to thank everyone who bought a sweet treat and donated money. Also well done to those

year 7s who spent their break helping sell the cakes - we had lots of volunteers! Finally a big, massive

well done to all those who donated cakes. They were so delicious and had lots of compliments, so thank

you! Overall, we raised about £126. Thank you St Bede's.

More Donations needed for our Hamper Appeal The year 11 Dream Team are making Christmas hampers for vulnerable older people who attend a local

day centre. They fill and decorate shoe boxes with donations from pupils. The finished hampers look

amazing. Thank you to all those who have already generously donated, but we still need more items to

fill the 20 hampers.

We are asking each pupil to bring in one small donation for our hampers. Some suggestions are:

biscuits, cakes, tinned food, non-alcoholic drinks, confectionery, puzzle books, toiletries, socks, gloves,

stationery, ornaments, Christmas decorations or any other items you think would be appropriate for an

older person to receive at Christmas.

We also need empty shoe boxes to make the hampers. Pupils should bring all items to the school hall by

Friday 7th December.

World Class Art Club Our KS3 lunchtime DT club created these wibbly wobbly robots out of wood and twine. They used the

pillar drill, laser cutter and belt sander to make the bodies, and then they were embellished using acrylic,

buttons, beads and googly eyes. They all have very different characters. I am really impressed. Well

done to the DT club on their creativity and enthusiasm.

Christmas dinner is on the way!

World class Christmas celebrations begin

Isobel Housley -Y11 Music Representative

Rehearsals for the Christmas Carol service on Monday the 17th are well underway!! The year seven choir

are excited to make their debut this year with a song that they have been working towards every Monday

since October. They have been singing both brand new songs and some old favourites that no doubt,

everyone will love and adore. The senior choir, our largest group, have been meeting on Fridays to

prepare a song that is both beautiful and powerful for our service, reviving an amazing vocal reflection

that just builds and builds to deliver a message to everyone who hears. Chamber choir has been

incredibly busy rehearsing a piece that can even rival last year’s stunning rendition of Mary Did You

Know, this year performing one of the most challenging yet impactful pieces of music that they have ever

done.

It is not only pupils that are rehearsing for the service. The community choir has been meeting after

school on Thursdays to prepare a range of classical and modern Christmas pieces for the service. The

choir consists of GCSE music students, past pupils, staff and members of our local community, both

parents and people who simply enjoy being part of a choir. Our school band will be performing some of

the nation’s favourite carols as always and will no doubt blow the congregation away with school’s range

of musical talents; with instruments ranging from saxophone to flute, the band is a greatly diverse group

of instrumentalists that come together to express their love of music. Boys’ choir has grown immensely in

the past few years; one of our largest boys’ groups ever. The music department has been overwhelmed

by the amount of enthusiasm for them in our past few years with many people leaving the service noting

the boys’ choir as one of the best parts of the night.

Everyone is welcome to attend our Carol service on Monday the 17th of December at 7pm at St. Anne’s

Church for a service full of musicianship, performances from our school’s drama groups and reflective

readings; a wonderful night that really helps people understand the true meaning of Christmas and also

just to get into that final festive spirit.

Help to shape the future of the Catholic Church The Catholic Church in our area recognises that it is at a significant moment due to the challenges and

opportunities which are facing the church and society. Archbishop Malcom has therefore called a synod.

All Catholics are invited to be part of this decision making process which will make decisions about goals

and actions for the Catholic church in the Liverpool Archdiocese in the coming years. It is vital that

Catholics of all ages and backgrounds are represented in this process.

Anyone with an interest in finding out more about the synod is invited to attend an open meeting to find

out more. The meetings in our area will be held at the times detailed below. For more information about

the synod please see the attached information or go to www.synod2020.co.uk

Requests for prayer We pray for the students, who have left us last year, always remember that you may leave St Bede’s but

St Bede’s never leaves you. Finally, we pray for all of our school families, especially those experiencing

difficult times. May you all know the Lord’s presence.

Let us know your news! If you are involved in any exciting activities or you have stories of St Bede’s from years gone by please

contact school and we can celebrate this in our fortnightly blog. Also if you have a relative or friend who

you would like our school community to pray for let us know via [email protected].

God bless,

Mr P Denton,

Headteacher
