Despite Egg Tart (Sebring) having to undergo a veterinary inspection yesterday, trainer Chris Waller is confident the

talented four-year-old will be fit to run in Saturday’s Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick.

The dual Group One winner, who was runner-up to Deploy (Fastnet Rock) when resuming in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) on 9 September, is currently battling an eye irritation and is therefore an uncertain starter in the Group One race.

As the barrier draw for the $1,000,000 race was being conducted at Randwick yesterday, Egg Tart was being inspected by Racing NSW senior official

veterinarian Dr Craig Suann, who later declared the mare unfit to start in the Epsom Handicap at this stage.

Dr Suann will inspect Egg Tart again at Waller’s Rosehill stables today, to monitor her progress and see if the problem has persisted, before determining whether the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2010m) and Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) winner can take her chance in the race.

Egg Tart, who is due to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy with 51 kilograms, drew barrier one yesterday in the field of 14, which is headed by race favourite, the Pat Webster-trained Happy Clapper (Teofilo) ($3.20).

Even if Egg Tart is ruled out of Saturday’s race, Waller will be well represented in the 1600 metre race by stablemates Foxplay (Foxwedge) ($9), McCreery (Big Bad Bob) ($17), Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) ($8) and Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock) ($7.50), who have all accepted for the Epsom Handicap.

Despite Egg Tart’s setback, Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth remains confident the mare will be fit to take her place at Randwick on Saturday.

“Eyes are very sensitive, but it also means they are incredibly quick to heal. The turnaround we saw from Thursday last week to Friday was incredible,” Duckworth said yesterday.

“We have another 96 hours until the race and I’m sure it won’t be an issue at all. If it had been, we wouldn’t have accepted.

“She’ll go around from a good barrier with a good jockey. She galloped this morning and galloped at Rosehill on Saturday. She hasn’t missed a single day.”

Duckworth believes Egg Tart is well placed in the Epsom Handicap

in her second run back from a short spell, a programme followed by champion stablemate Winx (Street Cry) when she won the 2015 edition.

Egg Tart was given an exhibition gallop on Saturday at Rosehill to prepare for the race.

“This has always been the target and it’s the exact same route as Winx, even down to the exhibition gallop a week before. It didn’t cause Winx any issues and from memory she didn’t draw as well as Egg Tart,” he said.

“It makes life hard comparing those two but we certainly hold her in high regard as everyone should after last campaign.”

McEvoy does not envisage barrier one being a problem for Egg Tart on Saturday, believing the mare has the turn of foot to be able to run through the field when required.

“She is pretty easy to ride and push button. She can be midfield from there and she has a good turn of foot when you ask her,” McEvoy said.

“Hopefully she can be slicing through them when she needs to be. Her finishing effort was good and Deploy was running a pretty swift time on a firm track. This is a better trip for her and she is a smart mare.”

Victorian trainer Shane Nichols accepted with Group One winner I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) in the Epsom Handicap, but she is also expected to be kept in the W H Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday when the final field is released today.

I Am A Star has drawn barrier two, with jockey Dean Yendall booked to take the ride, and looks set to carry 52.5 kilograms in the Group One if she heads to Sydney.

Nichols told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday he would discuss with owner Matthew Sandblom today whether they run I Am A Star in the Epsom Handicap.

“The Stocks Stakes is the softer race, but with due respect to the others, I don’t think it is a vintage Epsom, the top weight looks hard to beat and Comin’ Through will be highly competitive, but I Am A Star has had a chequered preparation this time in without much luck,” Nichols said.

“With 52.5 kilograms is extremely appealing and while she hasn’t had much luck in Sydney previously, she has encountered heavy tracks, so we would love to go back and make amends on top of the ground.”

In three runs this campaign, I Am A Star has finished fourth in the Aurie’s Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) and seventh in both the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on her most recent start at Flemington on 16 September.

“Going by her work this morning, which was outstanding, she is going to be highly competitive wherever she runs,” he said.

“She had 59 kilograms with no luck last start, so I thought she went OK, and the start before the Memsie Stakes, Humidor finished behind her and came out and won a Group One (the Makybe Diva Stakes).

“My horse is going OK and it would not surprise me if she wins the Stocks Stakes or runs a hell of a race in the Epsom.”

Meanwhile, jockey Blake Shinn, who rides Happy Clapper from barrier four, says the in-form seven-year-old is not badly weighted with 57 kilograms, the top weight in the race.

Happy Clapper is third up from a spell, having won the Tramway

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick first up on 2 September before finishing second to Winx in the George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) two weeks later. Foxplay ran third in the same race.

"He's in well with the weights," Shinn said."He's going to get every chance. He's got the best form lines of any

horse going in. I'm very confident."Trainer Gerald Ryan also made a late call to accept with Red

Excitement (Excites) in the Epsom Handicap. The eight-year-old gelding ran fourth in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2,

1400m) first up and almost caused a major upset when run down late by Winx in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on 2 September.

He then ran seventh in the George Main Stakes on 16 September when taking up the lead early in the race.

Brenton Avdulla takes the ride from barrier three on Saturday.“He is an old marvel, Red, I remember winning on him a few years

ago,” Avdulla said. “He nearly beat Winx a couple of runs ago and I have a good barrier to

work from (in the Epsom).”However, the Lindsay Park-trained Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)

winner He’s Our Rokkii (Roc De Cambes) could be scratched from the Epsom Handicap, with connections considering running the five-year-old in Sunday’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Caulfield instead.

Catalogued as Lot 245, from the Woodpark Stud draft, the colt ran the 200 metres in 10.31 seconds. The colt was only 0.01 of a second quicker than Widden Stud’s Sebring (More Than Ready) colt, who is catalogued as Lot 179. The sale begins its two-day run on 10 October. Winx heads Cox Plate second acceptancesDual winner Winx (Street Cry) heads the 48 horses still in contention at the second acceptance stage for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley. Last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) has been left in the race by trainer Robert Hickmott. Other notable entries include talented three-year-olds Royal Symphony (Domesday), Catchy (Fastnet Rock) and dual Group One-winning four-year-old Egg Tart (Sebring).

Ability and Super Cash could miss Moir startAbility (Reward For Effort) and Super Cash (Written Tycoon) are not certain starters in Friday night’s A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley. With a maximum field of 13, the Andrew Noblet-trained Super Cash is 18th in the ballot, while the Robert Smerdon-trained Ability is 19th. Both trainers have said they intended to run their horses in the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on 14 October if they don’t make the field for the Group One. Acceptances for the $500,000 race take place today, with last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) expected to make her much anticipated reappearance.

Step up in distance to suit AzazelTrainer Tony McEvoy is confident a step up in distance will suit Azazel (Snitzel) when he lines up in the Bill Stutt Stakes (registered as Moonee Valley Stakes) (Gr 2, 1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday. Despite the colt finishing a disappointing seventh in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on 16 September, McEvoy is intending to aim Azazel at the Caulfield Guineas on 14 October. "I'm really looking forward to seeing him at the mile," McEvoy said. "I've had the Guineas on my mind all the way through with him. While he has won the two races and they've only been smaller races, he's been very competitive in the better races and I believe they just haven't been quite at the right trip.” Click here to view the Moonee Valley weights.

Big Duke ready for MetropolitanJockey Brenton Avdulla believes European import Big Duke (Raven’s Pass), who won the ATC Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m) at Randwick in the autumn, is ready to improve in Saturday’s The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m). The Darren Weir-trained six-year-old, who was also third in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), ran tenth in last Saturday’s MRC Foundation Cup (registered as Naturalism Stakes) (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield behind Harlem (Champs Elysees). “At 2400 metres he probably should be unbeaten,” Avdulla said. “He is fourth up, on the quick back up and trained by one of the premier trainers in the world.”

‘Rock-hard’ Broadside fit for Group OneFitness will not be an issue for The Metropolitan contender Broadside (Raise The Flag), a Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) winner who backs up in Saturday’s Randwick race. The lightly raced six-year-old, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, ran third in last week’s Colin Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill. Tim Clark retains the ride on Saturday from barrier nine in the field of 12. “He has plenty of racing, but we felt we needed to get the miles into his legs. We felt that was going to be a better option than going third up into The Metropolitan,” Bott said. Legal Girl to take FlightPromising filly Legal Girl (Star Witness) will take her next step towards the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) in November when the Clarry Conners-trained three-year-old runs in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday. Conners foreshadowed VRC Oaks plans after Legal Girl won a Class One (1500m) race at Kembla Grange by three and a quarter lengths on 17 September. "She's come back a stronger, much better horse this prep. The plan's going well," Conners said.

Premiere start for Fell SwoopCanberra trainer Matt Dale yesterday confirmed multiple Group One-placed sprinter Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) would have his final lead-up run to The Everest (1200m) in Saturday’s Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, instead of the A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) for which he was also nominated. The six-year-old sprinter is representing slot holder Inglis in the $10,000,000 The Everest. Fell Swoop, who ran third behind fellow The Everest-bound gelding Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) in this year’s T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick, ran sixth first up in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) on 16 September.

Avdulla excited about ChautauquaBrenton Avdulla was delighted with the first up performance of star sprinter Chautauqua and expects the grey gelding to show himself to be a major player for The Everest when he runs in

Saturday’s Premiere Stakes. The Team Hawkes-trained seven-year-old made up ground in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) first up when seventh to Redzel (Snitzel) to be beaten two and a quarter lengths, his first run since winning his third straight T J Smith Stakes in the autumn. "You're not very happy many times when you get beat but the other day I was just happy seeing him back," Avdulla said. "From one prep to another a lot can happen, and you wonder if they've come back or not."

Hartnell gallops at CaulfieldUnderwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) contender Hartnell (Authorized) headed a four strong group of Godolphin-raced gallopers at Caulfield yesterday morning. He was joined by Group One winner It's Somewhat (Dynaformer), who is set to run in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and three-year-olds Kementari (Lonhro) and Esperance (Bernardini), both nominated for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m). "Hartnell was perfect," Godolphin’s David Charles said. "His work was really solid, exactly what James would have wanted. He got around on his right leg so I can't fault him for Sunday."

Single Gaze to tackle UnderwoodGroup One-winning mare Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) has been given the green light to tackle the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on Sunday by her trainer Nick Olive. The five-year-old, who ran fifth behind the impressive Humidor (Teofilo) in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at her last start, pleased her Canberra-based trainer in a racecourse gallop at Caulfield yesterday morning and is on course for Sunday’s $750,000 race.

Tiamo Grace entered for Tokyo City CupWakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Tiamo Grace (Monaco Consul) could run in Saturday’s Tokyo City Cup (Listed, 1800m) at Morphettville after missing out on a run last Sunday. The Darren Weir-trained four-year-old, who has been unplaced in two starts back from a long spell, was due to contest Sunday’s Coleraine Cup (1800m) but the meeting was abandoned

due to the weather and state of the track before the main race was run. Stablemates Articus (Areion), Gallic Chieftain (Tamayuz) and Moonovermanhattan (Manhattan Rain) are also entered for the $100,000 race.

Unbeaten Desert Lashes nominated for Whylie Unbeaten mare Desert Lashes (Reward For Effort), who was previously trained in the Northern Territory and has won her eight starts, is set to resume in Saturday’s W H Wylie Handicap (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville. Now trained by Shayne Cahill at Morphettville, Desert Lashes last raced on 22 April when taking out the Redelva Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville by two lengths. Stakes winner Viddora (I Am Invincible), Ruettiger (Duporth), Benz (Bushranger) and I Am Zelady (I Am Invincible) are also among 18 nominations for the $100,000 race. Derby Trial for Weather With YouThe Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained stakes placegetter Weather With You (Teofilo) will bid to earn an automatic start in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) by breaking his maiden in the Victoria Derby Trial (1800m) at Flemington today. "I thought he ran well," Baker said of the gelding’s recent second over 1400 metres at Sandown Hillside. "It was probably a bit short for him but he plugged on all right. I certainly think he will be better suited up to the 1800 metres. It's a nice big track and he's a staying horse who should come into his own the further he goes." Passage Of Time to have first start for PrideThe promising four-year-old Passage Of Time (Northern Meteor) is set to have his first start for trainer Joe Pride at Rosehill today having been transferred from now Godolphin head trainer James Cummings’ stable. "He's trialled like a horse that's going to race well for us. He seems like he is in good order," Pride said. "We'll take him to the races and let him tell us how well he's going." The entire will race from the outside

barrier in the $40,000 Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m). Click here to view today’s Rosehill fields.

Pariah spelledThe high-class dual Group Three winner Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) has been spelled and will return next year for an autumn campaign. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt, who finished second in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last season, made a winning return in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before running second in The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m). However, he could only manage ninth place in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at the weekend and will now be given some time off.

Admire Deus arrives in AustraliaThe Australian Bloodstock-raced Japanese import Admire Deus (Admire Don) arrived in Melbourne yesterday. The dual Grade Two winner is likely to tackle both the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) for new trainer Darren Weir in the coming weeks and is currently in quarantine at Werribee. "He ate up and drank plenty of water," Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said. "That first 24 hours you're always keeping a close eye on them, but as I understand it he's in really good shape. We couldn't have been happier with the way he had done in quarantine, so I'm pretty pleased with what I've heard out of today."

Winx and Almandin headline awards nomineesChampion mare Winx (Street Cry) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Almandin (Monsun) feature among the nominees for subcategories of the Australian Racehorse of the Year Awards. Winx is likely to be a strong favourite to win the Australian Racehorse of the Year crown for the second year running while she also features among the nominees for the Champion Middle Distance Horse. Almandin heads the Champion Stayer category, while last year’s winner Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) heads the Champion Sprinter line-up. The ceremony will be held in Brisbane on 8 October.

Stewards reject Maher’s caretaker plansSuspended trainer Ciaron Maher’s plans to have his brother Declan and current assistant David Eustace take over his stables while he serves a six month ban have been rejected by Racing Victoria stewards. Maher was suspended and fined $75,000 at a hearing on Monday for training horses, including Group One winner Azkadellia (Shinko King), for convicted conman Peter Foster. "They haven't got the standard of licence required," chief steward Terry Bailey told Racing.com. "Because they've only just been licensed, the first step in the process is they get a restricted permit which only allows them to train so many horses - which is about five or six - so they don't meet the criteria for a stable the size of Maher's. So they are going to look further afield."

Group One winner Hauraki retiredA year after his biggest win, Epsom Handicap winner Hauraki (Reset) has been retired from racing. The Godolphin-owned six-year-old had his last start in the Doncaster Handicap earlier this year, finishing fifth behind stablemate It's Somewhat (Dynaformer). Over three seasons and 25 starts, Hauraki won five races and was placed another 11 times, earning $2,546,660 in prize money. He ran in 14 Group One races and as well as his 2016 Epsom Handicap win, he was placed another six times at the highest level. "Horses like Hauraki are hard to find, and when they come along they are appreciated," Godolphin's Australian racing manager Jason Walsh said. Spendthrift sponsor Goulburn Guy Walter raceSpendthrift Australia will sponsor the Guy Walter Fillies and Mares Benchmark 70 Handicap (1300m) at Goulburn, donating a stallion service to the owner of the horse who wins the race on 26 November. Spendthrift Australia are standing four stallions at their Victorian property: Hampton Court (Redoute’s Choice), Swear (Redoute’s Choice) and shuttlers Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor) and Warrior’s Reward (Medaglia d’Oro). “This is the fourth year we have held the Guy Walter Fillies and Mares race on Cup day and we warmly

welcome Spendthrift’s involvement in the most prestigious day of racing on our calendar.” Goulburn Race Club chief executive Robyn Fife said.

Port Macquarie transferred to TuncurryTuncurry will host a race meeting initially set to be run at Port Macquarie on 29 October. The programming change, announced by Racing NSW yesterday, sees the distance of three races changed. The Benchmark 70 handicap will now be run over 2100 metres (instead of 2000 metres), the Benchmark 55 handicap will increase 100 metres to 1200 metres, as will the four-year-olds and older maiden handicap. All other race distances remain the same as programmed.

Tabcorp-Tatts merger hearing dates announcedThe original date of 18 October set for Tatts Group shareholders to vote on the potential merger with Tabcorp will now have to be rescheduled after Justice John Middleton, president of the Australian Competition Tribunal, set dates of 24-25 October for the rehearing of Tabcorp's application for the merger. Tabcorp announced last week that it had obtained all necessary pre-merger approvals from the relevant gambling regulatory authorities in relation to the proposed union.

Te Rapa next for HiflyerTrainer Peter Lock is favouring a tilt at an open handicap over 1400 metres at Te Rapa on 6 October next up with Hiflyer (Tavistock) ahead of his ultimate target, the Thompson Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on 28 October. The Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Hastings on Saturday week was originally earmarked as his lead up race. “It’s not about the money, it’s about placing him in the right race and if we go to Hastings, he’s going to have another big trip after that to Wellington,” Lock said. “He’s a lightly-framed horse and I don’t want to get to the bottom of him. There’s a race at Te Rapa the day before Hastings and, at this stage, I’m leaning toward that.”

Start Wondering to follow same pathThe Evan and J J Rayner-trained Start Wondering (Eighth Wonder) is set to embark on a repeat of his hugely successful 2016-17 campaign which led to him be crowned New Zealand champion sprinter. The gelding will be aimed at a defence of his Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and NRM Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) titles, and is likely to start off in the Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m), a race he won by three lengths last year, in November. “He’s been back in work a bit over four weeks and he had his first quiet run up the straight last week. He looks great and we’re very happy with him,” Evan Rayner said.

Cumani considering New Zealand trip for fillyBallarat trainer Matt Cumani is considering a tilt at the New Zealand Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) with the unbeaten Tigeen (O’Reilly). The filly, who is owned by his parents’ Fittocks Stud, is set to have her second start over 1600 metres at Bendigo tomorrow. “I’m still working out what distance is best for her and if she can learn to settle,” Cumani said. “She’s in the Thousand Guineas here, but that might come up a bit quickly for her so the Guineas in New Zealand is a potential Group One target. She’s owned by my parents so breeding is definitely the aim for her later on.”

Burgundy progeny making impressionCambridge Stud general manager Marcus Corban has been pleased with the start made by their resident sire Burgundy (Redoute’s Choice). The son of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) sired his first Group winner at the weekend when Dijon Bleu took out the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) taking his stakes winners tally to two. “We’re very excited,” Corban said. “He’s done a great job and he’s got some promising horses here in New Zealand as well as in Australia and Singapore. He will serve over 120 mares this season and the people who have been with him all the way have continued to support him.”

Breeders’ association calling for scholarship applicationsThe New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association are calling for entries for two

scholarships sponsored by Sunline Education Trust. The first, The Irish National Stud Scholarship, offers the successful applicant a full scholarship to attend the Irish National Stud’s five-month diploma course. Applicants are required to be under 25 years of age. The second scholarship is the International Management Scholarship, and the successful applicant will receive an all-expenses paid trip of 30 weeks experiencing the operational infrastructure, systems and management of Cheveley Park Stud in England, Coolmore Stud in Ireland and Taylor Made in Kentucky. Written applications for both scholarships, including a full CV, close on 13 October with applications to [email protected].

Chadwick hopes for repeat from Brave LegendJockey Matthew Chadwick is hopeful that Brave Legend (Choisir) can repeat his last start success at Happy Valley when he lines up in the Citi Sprint Challenge Cup (1200m) at the same track this evening. The Australian-bred four-year-old, who was a dual winner in New Zealand last year, ran out a comfortable winner on his first start at Happy Valley on 6 September. “I wasn’t surprised – I always thought he was a nice horse and I expected a nice run from him, it was just whether or not he would handle the track,” Chadwick said. “He seemed to be a bit green that day but he got around it nicely and hopefully he has learned a lot from it.”

Countofmontecristo thriving ahead of Kranji MileConnections of the Michael Clements-trained Countofmontecristo (Echoes Of Heaven), who has won seven of his eight career starts in Singapore, are looking forward to the Kranji Mile (SGP Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday. The Australian-bred four-year-old won the Jumbo Jet Trophy (SGP Gr 3, 1400m) on 10 September and assistant trainer Michael White believes the gelding has improved since his sole defeat in the Singapore Guineas (SGP Gr 1, 1600m) in May, when he ran third. “He’s top class. He thrives on racing; the more he races, the more he shows,” White said. “When he ran in the Singapore Guineas, he was nowhere near as good as he is now.”

Godolphin purchase top lot by Galileo

Godolphin continued where they left off at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale when purchasing a yearling by a Coolmore stallion on the first day of the Goffs Orby Sale yesterday, buying the top lot for €1,200,000. The Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) filly, catalogued as Lot 35, is the first foal out of Group Two winner L’Amour De Ma Vie (Dansili), and the trio of John Gosden, David Loder and Anthony Stroud outbid M V Magnier to secure her. "David, John and I all thought she's a very athletic filly," Stroud told the Racing Post. "She's from a good racemare and from a very good stud. She's the sort of filly that will add to what we already have at Godolphin.”

George Moore buys Dark Angel coltHong Kong-based bloodstock agent George Moore made his presence felt at the Goffs Orby Sale yesterday, when he purchased a colt by Dark Angel (Acclamation) for €280,000 from the Grangemore Stud draft. Catalogued as Lot 49, the colt is the first foal out of the stakes-placed Love In The Desert (Lemon Drop Kid). He is also from the same family as Venezuelan Listed winners Roy’s Revenge (League Of Nations), Diego Ramon (Thunder Ridge) and Ivana Valentina (Vacation). Moore revealed the colt will go into training with Clive Cox.

HKJC active The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) secured Lot 24, a colt from the Camas Park Stud draft for €110,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale yesterday.

The February born yearling is from the family of multiple Group / Grade One-winning mare Six Perfections (Celtic Swing), the dam of Group Two winner Planet Five (Storm Cat) and Grade Three winner Faufiler (Galileo). This is also the family as multiple Grade / Group One winner Miesque (Nureyev), the dam of Group One winner and now sire Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector) and multiple Group One winner East Of The Moon (Private Account).

Lloyd Williams purchases twoLloyd Williams made his presence felt at the Goffs Orby yesterday when the five-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winning owner purchased two lots, the most expensive of the pair being a colt by the Coolmore-based sire Camelot (Montjeu), who he purchased for €85,000. Catalogued as Lot 41, and consigned by Camas Park Stud, the colt is the first foal out of a half-sister to Group Three winners Lesson In Humility (Mujadil) and Poet’s Vanity (Poet’s Voice). Williams also purchased a colt by Australia (Galileo), who was catalogued as Lot 31, and consigned by Glenvale Stud.

Forecast rain to suit Dschingis in ArcThe potential for heavy rain in the Chantilly area this weekend is a boost to the chances of German raider Dschingis Secret (Soldier Hollow) in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), according to his jockey Adrie de Vries. The improving Markus Klug-trained four-year-old has won the Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Prix Foy (Gr 2, 2400m), a key Arc trial, at his last two starts. “There wasn’t much forecast but now it looks like there may be some (rain) coming Thursday, then again on Sunday. I’m delighted because it's a big help if the ground is soft," De Vries told the Racing Post. "He's proven he likes Chantilly and if the ground is soft we're very hopeful he can run a good race."

Dual Classic winner Brametot works well The dual Classic-winning colt Brametot (Rajsaman) pleased his jockey Cristian Demuro when galloping at Deauville on Monday morning ahead his start in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

on Sunday. The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt won the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m) and Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) earlier this year but was a disappointing fifth having blown the start in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (Gr 2, 2000m) last time. "He worked well, picking up the bit halfway round the home turn and galloping to the line," Demuro told the Racing Post. "If the horse you saw in the Jockey Club turns up, he can be involved in the finish."

Beckford in peak form for Middle ParkTrainer Gordon Elliott is pleased with Group Two-winning colt Beckford (Bated Breath) ahead of his tilt at the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket on Saturday. The colt was second in the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at the Curragh at his last start and is expected to appreciate the drop back in trip. "Beckford has come out of the National Stakes well and the plan is to run him in the Middle Park," Elliott said. "He seems in good form, but he never does anything too fancy at home. He just does what he has to do. I think the drop back to six (furlongs) will suit him."

Crowley to partner Unfortunately at NewmarketChampion jockey Jim Crowley will ride the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Unfortunately (Society Rock) for the first time in the Middle Park Stakes on Saturday. The Karl Burke-trained colt, who was recently purchased by Cheveley Park Stud, has been ridden by Tony Piccone the last twice having won back-to-back Group races in France. "Obviously it's Arc weekend at Chantilly, so there are jockeys riding there as well as at Newmarket,” Burke said. "I came up with a list of three possible jockeys, put them to the owners and Jim was top of the list. Jim has ridden plenty of winners for me in the past and we're delighted to have him on board."

Cheveley Park Stakes aim for HeartacheHigh-class filly Heartache (Kyllachy) will bid to secure a first Group One success in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket on Saturday. The Clive Cox-trained two-year-old has won the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2,

5f) and Flying Childers Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) this season and is set to tackle six furlongs for the first time. “At this stage we’re very happy and she’ll definitely run,” Cox told the Racing Post. “She’s come back from the Flying Childers very well. This is a step up to six furlongs, and it’ll be only a couple of weeks after Doncaster, but she’s showing us all the right signs.”

Clemmie leads O’Brien challengeAidan O’Brien’s hopes of winning a second Cheveley Park Stakes could rely on Clemmie (Galileo), who is an intended runner in the Group One. The sister to multiple Group One winner Churchill won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket when last sighted in July. "Clemmie is on course for the Cheveley Park," O'Brien said. "She seems in good form and goes for the race. We're not sure about Happily or Butterscotch yet, and a decision will be made on that pair later in the week, but Clemmie is an intended runner at this stage."

Eirene supplemented for Cheveley ParkStakes-winning two-year-old Eirene (Declaration Of War) has been supplemented at a cost of £16,000 for the Cheveley Park Stakes on Saturday. The Dean Ivory-trained filly won the St Hugh’s Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Newbury last month and was narrowly denied in the Dick Poole Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at her last start. “You've only to look at her last couple of runs – she's good enough to take her chance,” Ivory said. “She's in good form, she was second in a Group race last time and should have won it. The ground wasn't soft enough and we made our move a little too soon.”

Global Glamour syndicate launch in IrelandThe ‘It’s All About The Girls’ syndicate, which has enjoyed considerable success in Australia with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained dual Group One winner Global

Glamour (Star Witness), is set to launch in Ireland. The syndicate are likely to source two yearlings at this week’s Goffs Orby Sale and send them into training with Jessica Harrington. "We're absolutely thrilled to be setting up in Ireland, and to be doing it with Jessie Harrington is a no-brainer,” Goffs director and syndicate co-founder Elaine Lawlor told the Racing Post.

Wildcards added to Arc SaleTwo further wildcard entries have been made for the upcoming Arqana Arc Sale, due to be held at Chantilly on Saturday. The stakes-placed three-year-old filly Bijin (Holy Roman Emperor) has been consigned by her trainer Henri-Alex Pantall and catalogued as Lot 35. Meanwhile, Nice To See You, a winning four-year-old colt by Siyouni (Pivotal) out of the stakes-placed mare Around Me (Johannesburg), has been catalogued as Lot 40. The issue might not have gone away, just yet. It’s my understanding that the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) and its chair Amanda Elliott remain

unhappy with the decision but have opted to pursue ‘diplomatic channels’ rather than have the debate play out in the media.

As it stands, it gets curiouser and curiouser. Goodness me, never thought I’d be cheering heartily for a Lloyd Williams-owned horse. But I will be, in this year’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), should the owner opt to run Almandin (Monsun).

If Almandin were to win the Caulfield Cup he CANNOT, rather than may not, be penalised for the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) (which, of course, he won last year) and that would make a mockery of the proposed changes.

That change, just to refresh you, is that: “It has been determined that the winner of the Caulfield Cup will not be re-handicapped in the Melbourne Cup if they have already been allocated 56 kilograms or more for the Flemington feature.

“Furthermore, should the winner of the Caulfield Cup be weighted at less than 56

kilograms in the Melbourne Cup, the quantum of any penalty issued will not take the weight of the horse higher than 56 kilograms on the first Tuesday in November.”

I appreciate that maybe you’re tired of me banging on about this, but it’s just not right.

Bookmaker and keen racing observer Rob Waterhouse had a memorandum on the matter published on Racing.com. He described the decision as ‘wrong thinking’.

He added that ‘It should be said at the outset, this change seeks to solve a problem that does not exist.’ That perceived problem was a loss of connection between our two great handicap races - the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.

There’s no evidence to support this. In the past 40 years, just shy of 50 per cent of Melbourne Cup winners have contested the Caulfield Cup. Since 1991, 11 Melbourne Cup winners have come through the Caulfield race - which is four more than any other race which a Melbourne Cup winner has contested in his final two lead-ups. Next best is the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) (seven) and then the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) (six).

Bon Hoffa boost It was quite the weekend for Bowness Stud

and one which may just be a late turning point in the career of their stallion Bon Hoffa (Belong To Me) who, on the track, was prepared by Wendy Kelly to win the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in 2007.

The stallion, of course, had a two state double last Saturday with Bons Away and Don’t Give A Damn who were arguably the two most promising horses to win at Caulfield and Rosehill on the weekend. It would not shock if one or both progressed to the highest level.

That opportunity might even come as early as this Sunday with the still Ciaron Maher-trained Bons Away nominated for the Rupert Clarke - the race not only won by his sire but also by his best performed son Bon Aurum (also prepared by Maher).

Bons Away dented The Everest (1200m) aspirations of Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) when he won the Testa Rossa Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and became Bon Hoffa’s third stakes winner following Bon Aurum and Deiheros.

However, he has been a prolific producer of winners as Kelly’s husband Kevin notes: “We’ve had 14 individual winners of 51 races by Bon Hoffa and he’s been so reliable. They’re generally lovely, big horses and if you give them the time they’ll come to you.”

Bons Away is the third winner out of the Mossman (Success Express) mare Villa Albani, who was bought for just $2,000 at the 2012 Inglis Great Southern Bloodstock Sale. Villa Albani has a two-year-old Street Boss (Street Cry) filly named Street Icon and a yearling filly by Bon Hoffa.

Bowness Stud had, of course, even greater reason to celebrate on the weekend when Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) - who was born, reared and raised on the farm - scored a stunning win the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m). He was bred and is raced by long-term Bowness client Bert Vieira and his family.

Steve argues the industry shouldn’t shrug its collective shoulders and simply allow the changes to the penalty conditions for the Melbourne Cup to proceed

The FreedmansWhat price four brothers each training

a winner in four different major racing jurisdictions in one month?

Long odds, you’d think, but that is the September case after Michael Freedman got off the mark - with a double - at Sha Tin in Hong Kong last Sunday. Elder brother Lee had, earlier in the month, scored his breakthrough win in Singapore.

Meanwhile Anthony had five winners for the month in Victoria and Richard’s victory with Auvray (Le Havre) in the Colin Stephen (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill was his second for the month and his seventh winner from his past 14 runners.

None of this should shock anybody. After all, Lee Freedman - working originally with his three brothers - racked up Group One winners quicker than any trainer in history, eclipsing some legendary figures who preceded him, and had an impact every bit as remarkable as that of Chris Waller and Darren Weir.

Paris Lane's (Persian Heights) Caulfield Cup win in 1994 was the Freedmans' 50th Group One winner and came within nine years of their first - the 1986 Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) with Miss Clipper (Alert).

On my research, and based on the current

grading of group one races, Freedman's first 50 was achieved much quicker than Tommy Smith, Bart Cummings or Colin Hayes.

In the same span from their maiden group one wins, Smith and Cummings had fewer than 20 group ones and Hayes fewer than 10.

Racegoers at Rosehill last Saturday began to understand the marketing slogan used to promote the 2017 Sydney Spring

Carnival – Expect Unexpected – as outsider Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) raced away to win the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

Firming late in the betting from $101 to $41, Trapeze Artist on form was entitled to much more respect from punters and was back in the blinkers he wore to victory as a two-year-old in the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), but many were put off by his wide barrier position (14) in the star-studded field.

On that point, the caution of punters was correct as Trapeze Artist was caught wide throughout but it made no difference as he was

able to win with a leg in the air in a time of 1:22.41, defeating the filly Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) by the unexpectedly wide margin of four and a quarter lengths, with the favourite Menari (Snitzel), a stablemate of Trapeze Artist, another head away in third place.

Trapeze Artist continued the great early season success of last season’s record-breaking champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), to become his sire’s 12th individual Group One winner. The first Golden Rose winner by an Arrowfield Stud sire, Trapeze Artist led home a trifecta for the stud's stallions in this prestige event.

Little more need be said here about Snitzel, who now has a total of 68 stakes winners and an impressive 538 winners from 749 runners to date.

Suddenly, Trapeze Artist has become a hot stallion prospect, which is well justified when you look at the sustained strength of his female line which goes back through the 1971 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Fairy Walk (Minor Portion) to Raphis (Night Raid), a sister to the legendary Phar Lap and fourth dam of Planet Kingdom (Star Kingdom), a very successful sire in New South Wales in the 1970s and 1980s.

Bred by the Vieira Group and raced by members of Bert Vieira’s family, Trapeze Artist was offered at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale where he was passed in for $250,000, short of his $300,000 reserve.

He is the second living foal but first winner for his dam Treppes (Domesday), whose best

performance in six starts was to finish second in a 1400 metre maiden at Newcastle.

While Treppes may not have possessed great racing ability, this daughter of Domesday (Red Ransom) is bred in the purple.

Treppes, whose 2016 Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt was killed in a paddock accident, is due to foal in October to Wandjina (Snitzel) to produce a three quarter relative to Trapeze Artist.

Astutely bought for $55,000 by Connolly Bloodstock at a Darley reduction in Sydney in 2011, Treppes was later sold to Bert Vieira for $190,000 carrying Trapeze Artist in utero at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast.

A half-sister to Group One winner Crawl (Dr Grace) and stakes winner Old Man (Dr Grace), Treppes is a member of a very distinguished family developed most recently by the Inghams’ Woodlands Stud. Her winning dam Traipse (Bletchingly) is a sister to Group One-winning sprinter Boardwalk Angel (Bletchingly), dam of champion New Zealand sprinter/miler Coogee Walk (Success Express) and other good winners.

Elegant Walk (Le Cordonnier), the unraced third dam of Trapeze Artist, is a sister to Cheyne Walk (Le Cordonnier), only a moderate sire but a winner of five black-type features, notably the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2200m). Another half-sister to the pair, Jubilee Walk (King Of Babylon), won the Flight Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m).

Their dam Fairy Walk captured the 1971 Golden Slipper Stakes and Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and is a half-sister to stakes winners Planet Kingdom (sire of such top-class horses as Ming Dynasty, Ideal Planet, Just Ideal, Mighty Kingdom and Our Planet) and Fiona (Star Kingdom).

Trapeze Artist’s sixth dam Del Monte (Lucky Bag) is a sister to dual Derby winner Monte Carlo (Lucky Bag) and traces through Raphis to Phar Lap’s mother Entreaty (Winkie).

Carrying a 3f x 5m double of Bletchingly (Biscay), Trapeze Artist also has a double of Storm Cat’s sire Storm Bird (Northern Dancer) through two of his daughters, while the sisters Show Lady (Sir Ivor) and Monroe (Sir Ivor) appear in his fifth generation.

The Willie Mullins-trained Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow) and Riven Light (Raven’s Pass), who featured in the first acceptances for the Cox

Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) were reportedly in good shape when they galloped at the Al Bahathri in Newmarket yesterday ahead of their trip down to Melbourne.

The pair were worked under the watchful eye of Ireland’s champion jumps trainer Mullins, who travelled over from his Ireland base as they prepare to leave for Melbourne tomorrow.

They will later be joined in Australia by stablemates Thomas Hobson (Halling) and Max Dynamite (Great Journey), who are both due to enter quarantine tomorrow.

German-based trainer Andreas Wohler also made the trip to Newmarket yesterday to watch Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) bound Red Cardinal (Montjeu) do a piece of work round Side Hill, accompanied by Garcia (Paco Boy).

Also looking in good condition on Side Hill yesterday was the OTI-raced and William Haggas-trained Fastnet Tempest (Fastnet Rock), who will run for Haggas at the Spring Carnival before being sent into training with Lindsay Park.

All the other Newmarket quarantine inmates were out for exercise on Side and Warren Hill yesterday, including the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Kaspersky (Footstepsinthesand), who will run in in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield on 14 October and also featured among the first acceptances for the Cox Plate yesterday.

He looked in fantastic order as he cantered twice up Warren Hill.

Also out on the Warren Hill together was Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup entrant Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs), who was accompanied by Mask Of Time (Holy Roman Emperor).

“The nasal swabs for flu came back and everything is clear,” International Racehorse Transport’s managing director Jim Paltridge told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “So they are all ready to go, all the tests are done.

“They are inspected before departure by the vets so they need to show they are in good health and not showing any signs of problems before the health certificates can be signed. That will be last of the procedures before they leave tomorrow.”

Expert viewThe Racing Post’s top tipster Paul Kealy

gives his view on Wall Of Fire’s chances in Australia.

Looked a middle-distance stayer of serious promise last season when closing the campaign with victories in two high-class handicaps, including the Melrose Stakes (1m6f) at York's Ebor meeting. It's hard to say this season has been much of a success as, while he hasn't run too badly, he hasn't shown the sort of improvement that last season promised. Well beaten on his four-year-old debut at Meydan in March, he returned to Britain in April to go down by a nose when a short-priced favourite in a five-runner race at Nottingham and then finished a one-paced fourth in the Ormonde Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5.5f) at Chester before managing to beat only four of 11 opponents in another Grade Three in the America in June. It wasn't until late summer/early autumn that he took off last year, though, and a battling second to Defoe (Dalakhani) at Newbury in August was a step in right direction, even though the winner did not advertise the form when well beaten in the St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f).

Wall Of Fire (IRE)2013 Bay Horse

OverviewThe Group Three-placed Wall Of Fire

(Canford Cliffs) is due to fly to Australia tomorrow ahead of a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) campaign.

The colt will be trainer Hugo Palmer’s first runner in Australia, and he will arrive in Melbourne in good form having pushed the classy Defoe (Dalakhani) close when second in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5f) at Newbury at his last start having been hampered on the run in.

The son of multiple Group One winner Canford Cliffs (Tagula) progressed well through the staying ranks last season, winning the valuable Melrose Handicap (1m6f) and Mallard Handicap (1m6.5f) at York and Doncaster respectively.

He is yet to register a victory as a four-year-old but has run well in defeat when sixth in the Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m), second in the Further Flight Stakes (Listed, 1m6f) and fourth in the Ormonde Stakes (Gr 3, 1m5.5f).

Wall Of Fire is currently joint 34th in the ballot for the Melbourne Cup and is due to carry 53 kilograms, while he was also left in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) yesterday.

"I was delighted with his run at Newbury. I think he was coming to win his race and he had the door shut firmly in his face, but that was just race riding,” Palmer said last month.

"He will have a better chance with the lighter the weight he has. The race has been his goal all season."

Wall Of Fire is one of three named foals but the only winner to date out of the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Bright Sapphire, while his second dam is the Group Two winner Jewel In The Sand (Bluebird).

His third dam is the multiple stakes placegetter Dancing Drop (Green Desert), the whose offspring include the stakes winner Davignon (Highest Honor) and the winning dam of stakes winner Miblish (Teofilo).

His fourth dam is the Listed winner Moon Drop (Dominion), while this is also the family of stakes winners Smokey Storm (One Cool Cat) and Turning For Home (Spinning World).

VERDICT Born To Race probably won’t be far away but VICTORYFOLLOW ME is selected to gain his breakthrough Hong Kong

win. The topweight is 0-20 here but won twice when trained in France and ran well indefeat over C&D when dropped to this grade for his seasonal debut. Rock TheTree and Spicy Double should both benefit from moving back up in trip today, while Matthew Poon’s 7lb claim brings Gobi Storm into the equation too.

VERDICT There aren’t many with convincing credentials in this line-up andit’s tempting to take a shot in the dark with The Legend, who

has been comfortably held on both his starts but remains unexposed and has theservices of Joao Moreira this time. However, the vote goes to MASSIVE MOVE,who might have been better drawn but proved his well-being with a good run on dirt17 days ago and will be fine back on turf. World City has been off the track sinceDecember but, from the inside berth, could also have a say.

VERDICT Show Mission will likely be primed to run a big race after hissix-month absence but it’s very hard to get away from MASSIVE

VERDICT Junzi who scored over this trip on seasonal return last campaignhas been given a real chance by the handicapper as he is now

4lb below that winning mark and on return could be the time to catch him but a saferoption looks to be OCEAN ROAR who chased home Dr Race over C&D thismonth. Under the revised weights he should get a lot closer and has the perfect drawfor a front runner. Beauty Connection should also be competitive off this markand he rates as the main danger.

VERDICT Brave Legend ran out a comfortable winner of a similar C&Devent this month and should be competitive again even under

this hefty penalty but a chance is taken that BREEDERS’ STAR can build on hisrecent return to action when he finished on top of the leaders and secure his fourthcareer win. Starlight is improving and following his latest C&D victory now gets hischance in the higher grade.

VERDICT Kiram who chased home THUNDER STOMP over C&D thismonth will fancy his chances off 8lb better terms but the way the

selection came away from his field that day suggests that even off this mark he willbe too strong for these. Green Energy ended last season well scoring over 1m atSha Tin and he could have a say off this mark on seasonal return.

VERDICT Best Step showed up well in his first season winning twice fromsix starts and has a chance on seasonal return, while Master

Viking will welcome the return to 6f and should have a role to play off this mark. However, both will need to be at the top of their game to see off POWERMAX whoreturned to action this month and ran well, chasing home Brave Legend. Areproduction of that effort should be good enough here.
