5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ENTRANCE HYMN 451 Songs of praise the angels sang ANTIPHON Psalm 94:6-7 Come, let us worship the Lord. Let us bow down in the presence of our maker, for he is the Lord our God. COLLECT Father, watch over your family and keep us safe in your care, for all our hope is in you. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING Isaiah 58:7-10 (ESV) A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh. Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. The Word of the Lord. THE RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 111 (112) R. The good man is a light in the darkness for the upright. He is a light in the darkness for the upright: he is generous, merciful and just. The good man takes pity and lends, he conducts his affairs with honour. R. The just man will never waver: he will be remembered for ever. He has no fear of evil news; with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord. R. With a steadfast heart he will not fear; he will see the downfall of his foes. Open-handed, he gives to the poor; his justice stands firm for ever. His head will be raised in glory. R. THE SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (ESV) A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians. When I came to you, brothers, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.. The Word of the Lord. -6- -3- HEALING PRAYER We pray for our troubled world. We ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our lives and help others to come to know the love of Christ. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION John 8:12v. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!v. I am the light of the world, says the Lord; anyone who follows me will have the light of life.R. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

THE GOSPEL Matthew 5:13-16 (ESV)A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”.

OFFERTORY HYMN333 All my hope on God is founded

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS Lord our God, may the bread and wine you give us for our nourishment on earth become the sacrament of our eternal life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PREFACEIt is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For out of compassion for the waywardness that is ours, he humbled himself and was born of the Virgin; by the passion of the Cross he freed us from unending death, and by rising from the dead he gave us life eternal. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy . . .

COMMUNION ANTIPHON Psalm 106:8-9Give praise to the Lord for his kindness, for his wonderful deeds toward men. He has filled the hungry with good things, he has satisfied the thirsty.

COMMUNION ANTHEM Teach me O Lord - Thomas Attwood 1765 - 1838

COMMUNION HYMN 278 Christ be with me

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNIONGod our Father, you give us a share in the one bread and the one cup and make us one in Christ. Help us to bring salvation and joy to all the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

FINAL HYMN 235 Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go

THANK YOU

I must thank everyone who helped make Sunday’s Choral Evensong and party such a great success. The music and singing was superb and refreshments after much appreciated especially by those who travelled. It is hard to realise that it has been twenty years since I started as your parish priest. The support and love you have given me and my family makes it such a privilege to be your priest.

Every blessing

Fr Martin
