How does one go about touching their ancient self? This awareness isn’t achieved with a learned technique; it ultimately occurs on its own. Yet, there are things to do that will prepareyou to be more open to allowing it. The 5 preparations that this workshop will focus on;

“We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals... In a world older and morecomplete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost ornever attained, living by voices we shall never hear. they are not brethren, they are not underlings; they areother nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail ofthe earth.” —Henry Beston

1. Spending time in Nature. 2. Being with animals without an agenda. 3. Getting involved in making music. 4. Listening to your body. 5. Letting go of what you think you are.

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole youMusic has been one of my loving companions throughout life. As I kid it was campsongs around the fire. In high school I spent more afternoons with my record play-er than with other humans or doing homework. When CDs were born, I joinedBMG Music Group—receiving monthly music as if it was a gift from the universe. As an adult, my preference is to go see live music and dance with abandon. Yet,since my school days in band, I had never involved myself in making music. Thenin a conversation about seeking passion, I mentioned that if I could play any instru-ment it would be my own voice. My friend, who was struggling to find any excite-ment said something like “lucky you to know what you want.” The truth was by‘passion’ I meant something to be infallibly great at, and singing was doubtfullythat. But my friend’s statement gave me the fortitude to follow through with theidea. So at home alone with my dog, I gave singing a try. When Bella got up andleft the room, I decided to contact a professional singer/songwriter friend. As fatewould have it, she had just decided to coach people and I signed up.

Abridging the story, last night I was at an open mic to sing. It was not my firstone, and I had already surpassed the nerves of singing in front of an audience. However, last night there was so much talent, it felt more like the finals of‘American Idol’. Then there was me, who prior to last year was too embarrassedor self conscious to even sing in the shower. As I sat listening to people play andsing songs they had written themselves, I was washed over with feelings of inad-equacy. This feeling is not new; rather it has followed me throughout life. I havetried to outrun its discomfort, mostly by exiting any race all together. Yet, to betruly authentic and continually grow and expand, I have to move through the vul-nerability of feeling unworthy based on a supposed lack of talent. Doing soempowers my soul, while giving up perpetuates the negativity.

So, last night I stayed and sang my set. When I got on the mic, I told everyonewhat was going on saying; “Tonight’s musical talent has been so extraordinary, Ihad to write myself a letter about how we are all on our own musical journey. Itdoesn’t matter where we are on that voyage, it only matters that we keep takingsteps rather than dropping out along the way.” This could be said for any path.

My first song was new to me, my breath was con-strained and my voice shaky. I’d like to report that mysecond song sounded perfect. However, I so lostmyself in the song—giving it all I had without holdingback—that I have no idea what it sounded like. For thatreason, no matter how it sounded, that song may beamong my greatest accomplishments to date.

In harmony,

Saratoga Integrative Medicine EducationNetwork Upcoming ProgramThe Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, orSIMEN, has an upcoming program scheduled for Tuesday,March 5 at 6:30 pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49Henry St., in the Community Room. The program is free andopen to the public. No registration is required.

The name of the program is Hand Analysis and the Treasure Mapin Your Hands. Hand analysis is the modern form of the ancientart of palmistry. Whereas palmistry is defined as foretelling thefuture from the lines of your palm, Hand Analysis (non-predic-tive palm reading) is scientific – it is repeatable, based uponthousands and thousands of conclusive studies. Hand analysis islearnable – like learning to speak a foreign language or play amusical instrument. This type of palm reading is used with greatsuccess around the world by doctors, therapists and coaches tohelp their clients experience more ease, joy and success in theirevery day lives.

The shape of your palms and the lines of your hands have infor-mation about your temperament, your personality strengths andweaknesses, the type of emotional system you have, communi-cation and thinking style, etc. Both hand shape and lines canchange over time, but there is a part of your hands unaltered fromfive months prior to birth: your fingerprints. Like an acorn con-taining within it a picture of the oak tree it may become some-day, your fingerprints reveal your Life Purpose.

Join presenter Christine Kidder for an enlightening “hands on”presentation about what your hands can reveal. Discover yourheart line type and how that can help you with relationships andcommunication.

Christine Kidder is a certified hand analyst, artist, and creativitycoach. She does private and group readings as well as creativityworkshops using life purpose info combined with expressive artexercises to help you break through blocks in your creativity, yourbusiness and your life. Harmony Spiritualist Church was born. After countless conversa-tions from like-minded, spiritual people in the Capital Region, thatwere looking for a place to worship a God of their own understand-ing, it only made sense to plunge forward and embark on this greatadventure. Our Pastor, the Rev. Kelly Ballard and our Board ofDirectors were thrilled to celebrate our first service is July with over80 people in attendance, and our numbers just keep on growing.

What sets us aside from other Spiritualist Churches, is that we arean independent Spiritualist Church; we practice and teach uncon-ditional love, we refer to our 9 Principles as guidelines, and wehave no dogma or creed. We offer a safe and sacred place foreveryone to freely discover and develop their spiritual path, theirpurpose, and their spiritual nature. We practice and promoteprayer, meditation, and mediumship as a way to connecting moredeeply with our Divinity and the Spirit World who loves, supportsand guides us on our earthly journey.

Spiritualism is a religious and spiritual belief, which blends ancientwisdom and contemporary thought. References to Spiritualismhave been found for centuries in religions, literary, and historicwritings. Spiritualism, through mediumship, proves that life con-tinues after the death of the physical body. All Spiritualists recog-nize God as the Universal Source, the Infinite Spirit and we believethat each of us is an integral part of that God Power.

Our philosophy, drawn from this understanding, teaches that thepathway to spiritual growth and positive living comes from takingpersonal responsibility for one’s own behavior. We do not believethat anyone needs to atone for another’s transgressions. We are allsurrounded and supported by an unconditional love, and alwaysgiven a chance to heal and grow.

Healing is another very important dimension of our belief. Weaccept the healing power of God as the ultimate healing force, while encouraging the importance and value of medical treatmentand other health care services. We believe that the most effectivehealing benefits are derived from combined spiritual and physicalinputs. Spiritualism...a religious and spiritual belief that offers arealistic and dynamic path for positive living.

As our church continues to grow, we are holding our services ona monthly basis. Our services include quiet moments of reflec-tion, inspirational messages, hymns, a brief sermon, hands-on-healing, and demonstration of mediumship. We are a familyfriendly church, and are thrilled to announce that we also have aChildren’s Lyceum for the little ones of our Church community.Children, ages 3 to 12, are welcome to attend the Children'sLyceum during all of our services. Our Lyceum starts before thesermon portion of our service, in which our Pastor asks our chil-dren to come forward and join our Lyceum Leader to head to theirown classroom for an age appropriate lesson geared toward thetheme of our sermon; the children are returned to the congregationright before our Closing Hymn and Prayer.

We hope that you will be able to join us for a refreshing, inspir-ing, and uplifting evening at our next service on SaturdayFebruary 16, 2013 at 6:30pm.That same day, we are having a

In addition, Peaceful Acres Horses is looking for adults who wishto help care for the horses at the ranch. PAH is a volunteer runorganization. We employ one full-time stable care manager andtwo part-time college students who offer care and rehabilitation tothe horses. Everyone else is a volunteer!

Part of your volunteer experience with us will include being abuddy to a rescued horse and our Stability- Fit program. Manypeople would love to own a horse, but due to time constraints andother financial obligations, horse ownership is just not in thecards.

By becoming a volunteer at PAH, you not only help a horse inneed, you also have the joy a horse can bring into your life. Horsesare a prey animal, they have a desire to be with their herd, “fami-ly”, enjoy companionship, can feel who authentically loves themand are wonderful counselors, friends and confidants.

Physically: Instead of going to a gym to get in shape, I come toPAH instead! Doing barn chores; carrying grain buckets, waterbuckets is like lifting weights. My walking partners are the hors-es, bringing them out to a pasture for turnout or bringing them infor grooming. Grooming a horse gives your whole body a goodworkout.

Emotionally: Being at the farm in such a peaceful environment, with the horses, has a calming and de-stressing affect. Horses aregood for mind, body and soul.

Almost everyone has experienced time pass quickly as we watchan inspiring movie. As we abandon our sense of self and emo-tionally merge with the protagonist, we often gain insights thatwould have been impossible for us to acquire through our ownhabitual perspective. Shamanic practitioners throughout historyhave not only acknowledged the power of this identity transfer-ence (shape shifting) but have cultivated this ability to help themgain wisdom that ordinarily would have eluded them.

In this talk, shamanic practitioner, and publisher of the HealingSprings Journal, Katrina Clay will share with us how intimatelycommuning with nature has profoundly influenced her life. Shewill discuss how animals and nature can teach us when we allowthem to. Katrina will also facilitate a contemporary shamanicjourney that will take the participants to the experience of being adifferent species of animal. Each person will experience the eventdifferently, but all will come away with having had a private jour-ney tailored by their own subconscious.

Katrina Clay is a certified Shapeshifter Practitioner, a ShamanicReiki Master & publisher of “The Healing Springs Journal.” Sheis also a forever student of the natural world—a place that holdsthe knowledge of billions of years. We who read ‘Healing Springs Journal’ value clean livingand health. We strive to achieve optimal health by eat-ing well, paying attention to our thoughts, exercising,

healing our emotions, and creating a healthy home. Our homes andfamilies are sacred grounds. We pay special attention to our youngpeople, who will soon take our places as adults on Earth.

Our homes are also connected to the outside world. The Internet, radio, and television connect us to communications. We havevehicles which transport us to and from places that we need togo. Some of us use highly energy efficient vehicles. Some of usminimize the number of trips we take. Some ride a bus or bike.

Then there is electricity. It comes into our home from outside, enabling nearly every aspect of our modern lives. It keeps ourfood cold, and cooks food for eating. It brings us heat and light. It powers all of our communication devices, and keeps us safe bymonitoring for fire or intrusion alerts. Yet about 70% of electric-ity is produced by fossil fuels, which directly contribute to green-house gases and climate change. Another 20% of the electricitygenerated comes from nuclear plants, which have their own longterm, toxic implications. So 90% of the current electrical pro-duction comes from toxic sources. 25% of all greenhouse gasemissions are the result of burning of coal, natural gas, and oilfor electricity and heat. In addition, 50% of the electricity that isproduced is wasted. It never reaches our homes due to losses inthe generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is an alternative for us to consid-er. It produces 100% clean electrical energy from the sun, there-by reducing our impact on Mother Earth. PV produces electricalenergy at our homes, so that there are virtually no losses in thedistribution system before it reaches us. It can provide us withpower when there is a utility disruption. And it makes financialsense. Many say that it is a better investment than banking alter-natives since it usually offers double digit ROIs. And the energyis absolutely free, after the initial investment is recouped.

This article will tell you more about solar PV energy. Just how

does electricity come out of boxes placed on your roof? Howmuch does a system cost? How can you get a cost estimate? What are the steps involved in actually installing a system? Whocan I contact to take the next step?

How is electricity generated by the sun? The PV panels or modules that are placed on your roof are actu-ally sets of cells. Each cell is made up of two layers of semicon-ductor material composed of silicon crystals. Note, silicon comesfrom sand, which is plentiful and benign. When sunlight entersthe cell, its energy knocks electrons loose. The presence of wiresin an external circuit provides the necessary path for electrons totravel. Extremely thin wires provide this external circuit, and theelectrons flowing through this circuit provide the cells’ ownerwith a supply of electricity.

Most PV systems consist of about 60 individual square cellsaveraging about four inches on each side. Alone, each cell gen-erates very little power, so they are grouped together as panels ormodules, encased in glass or plastic to provide protection fromthe weather. These panels are grouped into even larger arrays tosupply the needs of a house, business, or industrial plant.

How much does a solar PV system generally cost?More and more people are viewing solar energy as an invest-ment, producing better returns than generally known bankingalternatives. It was recently determined that solar energy is nowcheaper per kW to install than new nuclear plants. And solarpower is shown to be significantly cheaper than electricity fromfossil fuel plants when you factor in health and environmentaldamage. Continuing improvements in PV technology are result-ing in continually lower costs for PV.

In the meantime, our governments provide incentives for theinstallation of solar systems. New York State provides a directdollar discount off of PV installations, as well as a tax incentive. The Federal government also provides a tax incentive. With all

of these incentives, the net cost for a typical residential systemcosts less than $9,000, resulting in a payback of 6-8 years.

You also have the option to lease a system. In this case, you sign alease for 20 years. The lease company owns and maintains the PVsystem that is on your house. With a leased system you either pay theleasing company less per month than your utility company or prepaythe 20-year lease and have no electric bill for the next 20 years.

The financial analysis around leasing is similar to that of leasing acar. As with all leasing programs there are caveats in the details.Have your attorney review the contract since you will be obligatedfor 20 years and selling your home before then could have problems.Additionally no one really knows what happens after 20 years sincewe have not reached that milestone yet in respect to solar leasing.

Please note that the warranted life of solar panels is 25 years, although they are expected to keep producing energy long after that. Some solar panels currently installed have been in operation for over40 years. There is little maintenance required, and all systems gen-erally come with an overall warranty and maintenance provisions.

How can I get a cost estimate for solar PV on my house? The first step is to solicit bids from solar vendors in you area. There are many vendors, which can be found with an Internetsearch. You may also wish to use the list provided on theNYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and DevelopmentAuthority) website. Make sure that a vendor is certified by NAB-CEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) inorder to help ensure that they have the knowledge and experiencerequired. (Please note that not all vendors have their NABCEPcertification listed on the NYSERDA website.)

Each vendor will have their own process for estimating a PVproject for you, but will generally involve the following steps:

1View your home location from a satellite view like GoogleEarth for suitability. About 30% of sites are not suitable forsolar due to obstructions such as trees.

2Review your electric bill to determine your annual electricalusage.

3Inspect your home in-person to take measurements for thelocation of equipment.

4Produce an estimate for your consideration.

When you receive the vendors’ estimates and compare them, read the detailed language carefully. Many of the approaches aredifferent from each other. For example, you will want to knowwho has responsibility for maintenance and warranty. Check thereputation of the vendor, and ask for references. Many solarcompanies have also started to install Chinese equipment, whichfor some homeowners may be a concern knowing the historicalquality of Chinese products.

What is Involved in the Actual Installation of a PV System? After you select a vendor, you will sign a contract with them, andwill pay a down payment. The vendor will then file an applica-tion for funding with NYSERDA and any local permittingauthorities. After NYSERDA approval is received, usually 1-2

months, the vendor will obtain all the equipment for your instal-lation. When the equipment is received, its actual installationwill generally take about a week, assuming that there are noweather or other disruptions. The last step after installation isthat your utility will install a special meter to accommodate thesolar system, and give the final approval to ‘turn on’ your newPV system. The vendor should provide you an overview of sys-tem use, and provide all needed documentation.

As we get into this New Year, let’s all continue to strive for ahealthy lifestyle in all its dimensions.

Love, compassion and forgiveness are the keys to a happy andsuccessful life. They are all we really need.

But, how do you get there when there are so many people and sit-uations in your life that create challenges for you everyday?

Your life is okay, but it could be better.

You want to be passionate, fulfilled, happy and peaceful, but how?

How do you get what you want without running away to anothercountry and starting all over?

You change what you can. It is as simple as that.

We have all heard the phrase: “you can’t change anyone but yourself”.What is that elusive and key component you need to change withinyourself? I can help you to discover it and find the happiness you seek.

My clients and students come to me because they are unhappy anddissatisfied. They want abundance, prosperity, improved health, and better relationships. I teach them how they can go from feel-ing like a victim, feeling that the world is happening to them, tofeeling empowered and loving.

In my program my students learn how to step off the triangle ofdisempowerment and step onto the triangle of love.

They discover the true causes of their unhappiness and proceed toeliminate those causes once and for all.

It’s not what is happening to us in the moment that is the problem. The real problem is the triggers we feel from old wounds. Thesewounds happened in childhood or in other lifetimes. We carry pat-terns of negative core beliefs around, baggage from our past thatis just waiting to be explored and healed.

The problem is that “we don’t know what we don’t know”. Welive in a story. In our story we believe that the world is happeningto us, that we are powerless. The truth is that the story is the symp-tom. To live the life of our dreams, we must discover the rootcauses, the negative core beliefs that are running our program-ming. Think of your body like a computer. If your computer hasa virus it is highly unlikely that you would know it. All you knowis that things are not working as they should. It’s the same for you.You ‘don’t know what you don’t know’. What you ‘don’t knowyou don’t know’ are negative core beliefs that you hold aboutyourself that keep you held in sabotaging patterns of behavior.

In my program students not only discover their subconscious neg-ative core beliefs, they learn techniques to remove these imprintsfrom their luminous energy field and magically heal their lives.

Jane is a confident and successful energy practitioner and chiro-practor. She helps lots of clients, yet her personal life is a sham-bles. The long standing feud with her mother has caused muchheartache and stress over the years. Finally after 50 years of deal-ing with this pain, she came to my program. She learned for thefirst time that she held the negative core beliefs of unloved, aloneand unwanted. Her mother was not the problem! Nothing hermother said or did could make her feel loved, wanted or accepted.Once Jane healed those pieces she was able to heal quickly andeasily. Today she has much happier relationships with her moth-er, her loved ones, friends and co-workers. The world is no longerhappening to Jane, she is empowered and in control of her reac-tions and her life. She discovered the root causes of her sufferingand released them. Her life now unfolds with ease and grace andshe easily dreams her world into being.

You can apply love, compassion and forgiveness to all situationsin your life. You must first learn what your key triggers are. Inrecognizing and healing these triggers you will experience a lifeof love and freedom of which you only dreamed possible.

As students progress through this yearlong program they heal onso many levels. This is lasting healing that includes ancestralissues, patterns of illness, and unwanted habits. They learn how tocreate easily and effortlessly the lives they really want to live.

“Retreat? Why would I want to attend a retreat?”

That was exactly my response back in November of 1997when my Transpersonal Therapist, Mia, told me that shewould like me to attend an overnight women’s retreat at

Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

Back then, I was a full-time Administrative Director for a largenon-profit organization in the Bay Area. In addition, I wasattending college part-time, and keeping up with domesticresponsibilities while my husband worked crazy computer-guruhours. This is why I told my therapist that It seemed to me that abetter use of what little free time I had would be to go to sleepearly in my own bed with earplugs inserted.

“Why would I want to feel constrained and uptight with a bunchof strangers in a church?” I challenged.Despite my mini-rant, my therapist gently persisted. Sheexplained that regardless of the venue, this event would be any-

thing but constraining. The setting did not matter; the intentionof the gathering did.“And the intention of the gathering is?” I asked.“The intention is to retreat from your everyday life ... to step outof your normal routine ... to get away from your practical respon-sibilities ... all of which distract and prevent you from being intouch with your Inner Truth and your Heartfelt needs.”

Well, I had to admit that it sounded like what I needed ... but Iwas still unsure. Being in a large group of women sounded emo-tionally intimidating, even for someone as outgoing as me. Iwanted to know more about what would happen there.

The answer Mia gave me was somewhat vague. “We start withsome singing, and large group work through which we breakdown into small groups. After the small groups meet with theirleader, there’s a lot of free personal time during which you canget a holistic healing or walk the Labyrinth, do artwork or justjournal by yourself. Late at night the lights will be dimmed soyou can sleep in your sleeping bag. In the morning you’ll beawakened gently and the process continues. It will all be over bynoon.”

I was still unsure and tried a couple of other ways to get out ofcomplying with her request. Then, finally, Mia said, “Jae, Iwould really like you to do this. Trust me. It will be worth theinitial discomfort.”

Three weeks later, I attended my very first women’s retreat .... myfirst retreat of any kind. That 18 hours that I spent away from theoutside world ... away from my To Do List, away from phonesringing or knocks on my door, away from my inner critic remind-

ing me of what I should be accom-plishing ... changed my life.

That retreat gave me new perspec-tive, gave me time to rememberwhat I had originally envisionedaccomplishing in my life. I wasable to reach back to a time beforeI was subjected to the many “voic-es of reason” and “level headedintellectuals” telling me what Icould and could not do. I rediscov-ered the center of my heart’s long-ings, of forgotten dreams that I left behind, and aspirations that Icompromised away for someone else’s vision.

I shared about these “aha moments” when our small groupregathered that Saturday morning, and I experienced an amazingsense of peaceful affirmation as each member of my small groupshared her own, similar aha. Our ages ranged from 60-somethingto 19. Our backgrounds, vocations, and personal reasons forbeing there were just as diverse. Yet every woman in that circleexperienced a sense of reclaiming a disowned part of herself andof rediscovering forgotten hopes, dreams and goals. Severalhours later, we were bidding goodbye to each other throughshared song and personal farewells. I walked out of GraceCathedral that morning with new perspectives about myself and

a very different vision of myfuture. That vision eventually ledme to become the Holistic LifeCoach and Retreat Facilitator that Iam today.

So, does every woman who attendsa retreat have a huge life changingexperience? Of course not. However, at every retreat that Ihave attended or facilitated, I havewitnessed the amazing difference inthe emotional and physical

demeanor of participants from the time they arrive until themoment of their departure. They leave lighter, calmer and moreoptimistic about life.

Such wonderful gifts ... from simply giving ourselves permissionto retreat.

Shamanism embodies mankind’s first spirituality. It is aspirituality that is practical, experiential, ethical, recogniz-ing man’s inter-relatedness with all of nature. It is a spiri-

tuality of connection, where past, present and future are all avail-able and the invisible is as real as the visible. Animals arerespected as conduits of healing and power. They are teachers.Humans are nestled between earth mother and sky father.

When I open sacred space and pull the energy of my soul stararound me I open to my intuition and to connection with myinvisible help. For so many years I felt sad, cut off, exiled fromthis way of knowing. Each of us has our own way of connectingto the invisible. Sometimes I see. Sometimes I hear. SometimesI sense as in hot, cold, prickly. Sometimes I simply know. In thisspace my clients own intuitive abilities open and often they seeand sense as I do.

Gentle breathing begins to move what is stuck, the imprint oftrauma being held in one or another energy center. Contracts, beliefs and legacies that bind are removed. Cords that hold us toothers in dysfunctional ways are cut. Toxic energies are extract-ed. Parts of soul that have left due to trauma or neglect areretrieved and returned to self. Wholeness, balance and harmonyare restored.

Many of us are exiles, not only from our intuition, but from mostof nature, from our ancestors, from our invisible help. Sinceembracing this path I feel less and less alone. I am beginning toappreciate the gifts of my ancestors. I am more appreciative ofthe unique place every thing has in this creation. I begin tounderstand what it is to “walk softly upon this earth.” I learn thatI am connected and cared for, that I have a place, that I belong.

Each day now I say a prayer:To the winds of the south: great serpent. Wrap your healing coilsof light around me. Teach me to shed my past the way you shedyour skin – all at once. Teach me to walk softy upon the earth.Show me the beauty way.

To the winds of the west: mother sister jaguar. Protect my med-icine space. Show me the way of peace, the way beyond death.

Teach me how to live with impeccability.

To the winds of the north: hummingbird, ancestors, ancient ones.Come, whisper in my ear. I honor you who have come before me,and you who are yet to come, our children’s children.

To the winds of the east: great eagle, condor. Come to me fromthe place of the rising sun. Take me under your wing. Show methe mountains I only dare dream of. Teach me to fly wing to wingwith the great spirit.

Earth mother, pachamama. We are here for the healing of all ofyour children: the stone people, the plant people, the creepycrawlers, the four legged, the two legged, the finned, the furredand the winged ones. All our relations.

Sky father, grandmother moon, star sisters and brothers; you whoare known by a thousand names and you who are the unnamableone. Thank you for bringing us together and allowing us to singthe song of life.

Entering the path of the shaman has enabled me to reclaim thesacred in my work and has added nature to my experience of thesacred in my life. I always suspected that I was in this body, onthis earth, for a reason. Harmony and joy and belonging are not soelusive after all. Healing can be swift and deep. And my own heal-ing can extend into the past and the future. The change we need tocontinue to survive and thrive on this planet is possible whenenough of us become willing to let go of what no longer serves usand bring in an appreciation of the gifts that life offers.

2013 is the year of the snake in Chinese Astrology. May she bringhealing to you, and help you drop whatever is old and no longerserving you as you move into the new.

Essential oils can be used for more than a soothing bath, massage or pleasing fragrance. They can be used to help usfeel our best all the time. Feeling our best is always having

enough ENERGY. Essential oils can provide us the energy weneed to sharpen our mental focus, finish shoveling the sidewalk, walk the dog or even just read the newspaper.

Our bodies’ energy fluctuates during the day depending on ourmeals, lack of meals, water, lack of water, sleep quality, lack ofsleep and our activities. Even if we sleep well, eat nourishingmeals and move a lot throughout the day, we can still experiencesome fatigue or dips in our energy. A little or BIG pick me up canbe one of your bottles of essential oils.

Please place any bottle of essential oil in your right hand whenyou desire more energy. Please take a deep breath in through yourmouth and hold it for 10-seconds. Please exhale through yournose slowly. Please repeat the same breathing sequence. If you donot notice an obvious increase in your energy please switch handsand repeat the same breathing sequence two times.

It is possible holding a different oil will provide more energy. Please experiment with the oils you have to see what oil providesyou the most energy. Please experiment using the different oils attimes when you need more energy. Most likely you will find thatat certain times one oil will help more than another. Essential oilscan help us feel more energy and allow us to feel our best whenwe need to the most.

Ibegan my Usui Reiki training journey20 years ago working with local teach-ers then branched out to the

International Center for Reiki Training forMaster/Teacher training. I continued withKaruna Reiki and then experiencedAdvanced Master Teacher training withArjava Petter, a well known German ReikiMaster. Along this journey I have had the

most exquisite experience of sharing healing methodologies andtraining with Teachers from all over the world.

This past year I had the honor to have trained with InamotoHyakuten in his Authentic, Simple and Spiritually based KomyoReiki Style. Inamoto, Sensei is a Japanese Buddhist Monk whodeveloped his training style based on the lineage of Usui, Hayashiand Mrs. Yamaguchi (Sensei’s teacher) in Japan. For over fortyyears Sensei has been healing and teaching in Japan, steeped inthe old culture.

Komyo Reiki is a simpler form of healing utilizing the originalUsui-based four symbols with the motto: “Place your hands, sur-render and smile”, the energy knows what to do! It also has astrong focus in the Reiki Principles that are guidelines for livingan enlightened life. Enlightenment can provide a strong sense ofinner balance, compassion, spiritual awareness, happiness, peace, wellness and a good life. It is not an end point but a compass toguide your journey. It is being present & content in every momentright where you are.

Reiki healing from an enlightened view is not so much “doingreiki” as it is “being reiki”. Therefore the practice of Reiki is nottime oriented to a schedule, but becomes a way of living.Compassionate concern for the wellness of all beings is the everpresent lens with which to view the world and most importantly, yourself! Your journey begins and continues with your wellness. For you to assist others, you must be balanced and whole in orderfor the light to clearly shine through you. Simple, serene healingenergy promoting spiritual enlightenment – Komyo Reiki.

Every person, place, and thing, is an extension of Source-the Universe, God, Creator- the name you use or mostrelate to, comes down to personal preference. And because

we are an extension of Source, we can access the same healingand transformative powers of Source. There is nothing that is out-side of our capabilities unless you tell yourself otherwise.

ThetaHealing uses principles of quantum physics and a medita-tive state to facilitate physical and emotional transformation.Vianna Stibal, the founder of ThetaHealing, created this modali-ty after healing herself instantly from a cancer diagnosis that hadleft her with only weeks to live. She found that the technique sheused to heal herself could be taught to others. Everyone has theinnate ability to tap into Source and make all of their wildestdreams come true, because we are co-creators in this experiencecalled life and each one of us has a personal connection to thatSource of infinite and unconditional love.

All of the experiences we see materialize in our life - whetherthey be in our physical body, emotional state, or experientialreality, are outward manifestations of our inner thoughts andbelief systems. When you change your beliefs and thoughts, theexternal reality changes too. With ThetaHealing, implementing aprocess of digging down through the layers of your belief sys-tem, subconscious beliefs can be accessed. The subconsciousgoverns 90% of your belief systems, and many of those pro-grams were developed from birth to 5 years old; often one is noteven aware of them. When cleared, and re-programmed withhigher vibrational thoughts and beliefs, miracles become a partof everyday life and people can experience dramatic changes in

their body, life, and circumstance.

ThetaHealing has nolimits to what it canhelp change. Issues orblocks around weightloss, money, relation-ships, addictions, andillness are a few of thelarger issues that can beworked through. Anyarea of dis-ease,whether it is emotionalor physical, begins firstin the subtle bodies andovertime manifestsitself into your physicalreality. But thethoughts and feelingsaround what you areexperiencing can be shifted when the subconscious root has beenrevealed and pulled. Thus creating fertile soil for the growth ofnew, fresh, nourishing experiences to be part of your reality.

Allison Petroski is a LMT, Theta Healing Practitioner, YoungLiving Oils Distributor, and an artist. She is using her intuitive, artistic, and healing skills to teach others that each and everyperson has their own direct connection to the abundance andlove of Source Energy. Phew, we’ve whizzed through another holiday season. Manypeople actually experience more stress during this “seasonof joy” and are looking for relief and rejuvenation by

February! It’s understandable, all the extra activities of shopping, spending, and food preparation and the after effects of the brainfog and weight gain from over-consumption can be depleting.

If it seems to you that this type of stress is not good foryour body, your right! In fact, one recent study fromColumbia University found that being stressed andanxious is as much a predictor of a heart attack assmoking five cigarettes a day!

Negative and anxious thoughts affect our biochem-istry. Think of how your body is impacted by hear-ing joyous vs. negative news. Did your heart raceand mood drop when you learned of the recentevents in Connecticut? Was your immune systemimpacted or your ability to focus at work side-tracked by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy?

Therefore, I felt called to reiterate in thisarticle exactly how thoughts and stress

affects our body. Later on, I will provide hope with tools whichempower and shift the focus onto new solutions to life’s strug-gles. (Still, do keep in mind that the body does need some stres-sors in life in order to stay alert, balance immune and inflamma-tory response, and clear debris after disease processes).

Here’s the Biochemical Breakdown of Stress:

1Stressful thoughts trigger the release of stress hormones (suchas cortisol and other glucocorticoids), and various neurotrans-

mitters (such as epinephrine and norepinephrine).

2The hormonal and neurotransmitter modulation triggers a“fight or flight” response. This shunts nutrients and biochem-

ical mediators away from assimilating utilizing nutrients andbeing utilized in the body for reproduction, digestion, andrebuilding.

3As a result, long term stress can lead to hormonal imbalances.Specifically, the ratio of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone,

and DHEA becomes less bio-available. The adrenalinerush further signals the thyroid to slow down, so yourbody doesn’t go into “overdrive”. These hormonalchanges have an effect on fatty acid metabolism, glu-cose and nutrient use, weight management, mood,

skin, hair, and immunity. Furthermore, bloodsugar deregulation from cortisol excretion canwreak havoc long term on blood vessels.

4If that’s not enough, stress side-swaps yourchill-out neurotransmitters such as GABA

and glycine (from signaling imbalances inelectrolytes that excite the NMDA receptor)which increases anxiety and makes you amore alert yet chronic insomniac (“tired andwired”).

5Your limbic brain (the primitive and emo-tional component of the brain involved in

survival) then takes over and trumps the ration-al and executive functioning region (prefrontalcortex and anterior cingulate gyrus). Bam! Atthis stage, the result can include, but is not lim-ited to, inflammatory emails, excessive choco-late consumption, and reactionary texts goingviral!

6Finally, after enough depletion by stress, you get sick (either through an autoim-

mune response, allergy, or cold). -Initially,the body reacts by suppressing inflammation;however, long term, it decreases your bodiescapacity to deal with environmental stressorsand bugs.

Summary of stress effects:You become not only diagnosed with “wonky brain” but are alsonutrient deprived, bloated, moody, and “sick and tired.” Notcool! Ouch, my Brain! Now, what to do?

1Take a breather! Studies show that mediation and relaxationactually reprogram your brain's response to stress and will

boost your immunity.

2Don’t Forget Fish Oil This supplement can help with brainfunction and decrease the inflammatory effects of stress.

3Care for Yourself! It’s the season for giving, but it can take alot out of you! If you are too busy with others, how will you

be there for anyone else? This is a scientific fact: A study with31 caregivers of dementia patients showed a decline in the care-givers more than the dementia patients themselves! (So, next

time you splurge on self-care, explain to yourhoney your helping your brain. J)

4Nurture Quality Relationships. Studiesshow this boosts immune function!

Other examples of stress busters are yoga, exer-cise, laughter, and nature.

What’s your favorite stress buster? Now, go do it.J

On a sunny fall day, eight people gather eagerly to take aquantum step forward in their spiritual development. The event is the first of five monthly Earth Heart Energy

Attunements – meant to bring expansion to their hearts and toconnect them with all of nature. As everyone settles in and getstea, they speak of the importance of “staying connected”, not tothe internet and smartphones, but to the heart of the planet andthe heart of the heavens. In fact, this heart alignment has beenkey to most ancient earth ceremonies and most recently to “theshift” of 12/21/12, which heralded a new age of spiritual aware-ness on the planet.

The Earth Heart seekers come with a belief that energy attune-ments can transform them in profound ways. Each successiveattunement will lead them ever deeper on this shared journey torediscover their divine selves. Reactivating the energies regular-ly will make these spiritual changes lasting.

We establish a sacred circle and call in higher guidance. Spiritis already present, gently loosening accumulated tensions inpreparation for the attunement: one woman says through tears,“The attunement energies are already coming, in waves of pro-found heart energy”. Quietly, we mention the many earth-cen-tered traditions and their belief that the land is sacred and thathumans have an innate interconnection to it. The group nodsvigorously, feeling this truth stirring somewhere deep inside. They long to fully reclaim that bond: the tremendous joy ofearth’s powers running through them and how that calls them tobe guardians of the planet. It is time to reactivate our EarthHearts!

In silence we step outdoors, mindfully kissing the earth witheach step as we walk to the vortex in the forest. We settle intocircle, embraced by ancient maples and sacred stones. A shortguided imagery is followed by a rich, deep, powerful infusion ofhigh energies – the attunement ceremony – and then we gently“come back”. One woman leans her head in gratitude against agiant tree trunk. Another lets herself fall backwards into thearms of Mother Earth, breathing deeply, letting the energies set-tle. The others wander off for quiet time, hearts open to receivethe first moments of new sacred relationship with all of nature.

Afterward we share experiences with awe and wonder. Several

people sensed a beam of light coming down into them. Ben sayshe felt it energizing him “spectacularly as a column of light”;Sally says it had a message for her: “See yourself as the worldsees you: pure of heart.” Next Ellen shares, “I went into this afraidof my power. After the attunement I saw the sun inside me… Iphysically shook off [my] darkness… The sun got bigger andlighter in my expanded heart”. Deb speaks up, “I feel an outpour-ing of love and light within me; I’m doing it consciously.” Kevinchimes in, “My posture is totally different – because I’m standingin my truth and my power!” Each person is receiving expansionand wisdom, palpably, in the perfect way.

From month to month it is evident that the Earth HeartAttunements are having a cumulative effect. Alison gratefullysays, “Working with these attunements is a smooth and peacefulexperience – a gentle progression forward on my path, rather thana sudden jolting step”. Everyone nods. Megan explains, “It’s justbeen growing every day. I am one with the earth – feeling thatgroundedness – enmeshed with the planet”. An herbalist by trade, this has had quite an impact on the depth of her work with plantsand their spirits. Kelly shyly mentions that after three attune-ments, she has been able to go off anti-depressants because of thenew level of calm and grounding. “I can’t believe how happy Iam!” she beams.

The Earth Heart energies were given by Spirit precisely for thistime on the planet. We come away able to sense messages fromnature; holding more of our light; walking with an “amazing senseof unity with other people and the earth”. It is the power of thehuman heart that is at the core of this awakening: our hearts aremeant to resonate in oneness, peace, and life-giving love that willhelp hold the earth in balance. We stand at the brink of being “thenew human”, here at the start of the Golden Age, on this planetthat so clearly needs our help.

It hurts to be embarrassed by our actions. It burns our hearts tomake mistakes, it is a complete and almost unbearable formof vulnerability, belly exposed and everyone can see our fal-

libility. Most people stop there, dwell, form hardened scars, andcarry a heavy collection of regrets. But this is not where con-sciousness is asking us to stop, that is not the intended usage ofsuch experiences. Instead, we stop, and feel that pain, and sit withit, recognizing it, and openly observe. Pieces settle into place. Wecan journal, talk to friends, practice meditation, energy healing, oryoga asanas. We can connect with animals or nature, walking andhiking, or sitting peacefully. We can think, and we can moreimportantly cultivate spaciousness... the spaces between thethoughts, and the pieces fall into place, insight arises, and the painhas become an agent for our spiritual development.

The regular and unconscious response to pain and discomfort is toavoid it. We tense against it, we close.. this is resistance. We learnin the path of mindfulness to instead open wider, to offer NOresistance as we observe all phenomena, all experiences equallywithout judgment or favoring. What happens when we cease toresist the pain, is that we feel it more acutely and intensely, but itleaves us more open, more free, and more conscious. We can learnfrom the pain- the sting of embarrassment teaches us not to repeatthe same mistakes, like the memory of a burned hand teaches usnot to touch a hot pan, or the memory of food poisoning providesa visceral reminder to be more cautious of what we eat.

The evolution of consciousness that we are all undertaking asembodied souls requires this trial-and-error process. As we raiseour awareness, as our energy changes, that which used to serve usno longer does. Old habits that were real and important and part ofus before, are no longer connected to who we are. These ghostsneed to be released. This requires a humbling sense of opennessand flexibility of mind, and it can be hard to imagine that those whoknow us can adapt as our personality evolves with us. However, people connect, disconnect, and sometimes reconnect as their ener-gies are harmonious or disharmonious. Fear of loneliness cannotprevent our evolution, because when one person leaves, anotherwill come. We are here to live our truth, no matter what the cost. And furthermore, if we do not live our truth, we will suffer deepinside, and that suffering will grow like a disease and eventuallycause so much ugliness and hurt that we will begin to take it out onothers. It never does us or others justice to maintain falseness.

Spiritual PubertyThis process of uncomfortable yet delightful evolution is almost

like puberty.. with all the awkwardness and embarrassment, con-fusion, agonizing discomfort, getting lost, figuring, exploringand blossoming into deeper and deeper levels of confidence, strength, and more palpable connections to inner rightness andtruth. Just like puberty, the changes are happening, if we wishthem to or not. It makes it harder if we fight reality, and sincethat would be futile, it only makes sense to open wider and widerto the painful but beautiful lessons we earn.

Everything happens in natural cycles; seasons of light and dark, birth and death and rebirth. Life in the physical is filled with nest-ed spirals of evolution; microcosms tucked majestically intomacrocosms. Linear paths are typically human in invention, every-thing else spirals around and around. Forgetting and rememberingare part of the journey. Loneliness and rediscovery of interconnec-tion are part of the path as well. As are mistakes and forgiveness

In yoga philosophy, the Gunas are used as a handy way of dis-cussing different qualities in energy. Our cycles of evolution canbe seen and understood more with the help of these ideas. Don'tworry about grasping the idea and labeling things.. let it help youto articulate what you already feel in your experiences.

The GunasThere are three gunas. All three are present in all of us, but certain energies, people, or actions can have a strong dominanceof one guna in particular. Remember that these labels are to helpyou articulate and process what you feel, so maybe meditate on anexample of each and feel the differences in the qualities of energy.

Tamas is the guna of stillness, of lethargy, of delusion, darknessand depression. It is present in apparent solidness and stagnation. It is part of the “darkness” of negativity, the delusion that we areseparate and the objectifying other beings and taking advantageof them out of fear or greed. Depression and being overweightare states of excess tamas as heaviness. Tamas is also present insleep and consistency, so it is not all negative.

Rajah is excited movement. It is nervous energy, anxiety, scat-tered or flighty minds. It is like too much caffeine or hyperactiv-ity. It is the inability to sit still, the need to be in constant motionor stimulation. It is chaotic and can be draining because it isunguided. It is abundant, unfocused energy.

Sattva is extreme energy, but where Rajah is also extreme ener-gy, Rajah is out of balance, and sattva is in balance, focusing thatenergy into one flow, like a laser. Sattva is considered the high-er and lighter state of energy and it is the goal to cultivate an

and exploring the Gunas to understand energy and experiences in spiritual growth

Page 29: Healing Springs Journal Issue #66 Feb-Mar '13

abundance of sattva versus Rajah or tamas, according to Vedicphilosophy. It is great peace, great love, the ability to accept whatis in each moment without fear or resistance.

The trick is that we can demonize all the other states of being. We candemonize the pain of embarrassment. We can demonize ourselves forlearning slowly over many painful experiences, but it doesn't makesense to kill the messenger, to hate the process, the journey. Life IS ajourney, your everyday life is your spiritual path. Vacation isn't theonly time to be free and accept the flow. Its here and now. In thepainful AND blissful experiences of life alike, we are evolving, grow-ing, and becoming free of all the chains we've allowed to bind us. Inevery moment we are living our life, choosing how to write our story. And it takes patience, acceptance, and experiences of all kinds tohone the spirit in its interface with the physical.

Without the movement of Rajah, we can never transcend tamas. We learn to process the massively intense amount of spiritual ener-gy that is present in each moment, and at first we are distracted andscattered and thrown back and forth between tamas and Rajah. Then we learn to ride the ship, to yield and move with the flow ingrace, and we touch sattvic states. Eventually, we rarely tastetamas, and we learn faster and faster to cultivate our Rajah intosattva. We become balanced and whole again, our essential state, our Self, shines brighter then ever before. We meet our Self.

The recent universal shift in energy was from Rajah to sattva Ibelieve, that is how I am experiencing it.. so instead of being bom-barded by Rajah, we are becoming surrounded by sattva.

Our journey is individual, but we all go through it, it is universal aswell. Don't hold too tightly to anything, let it all flow through youand your experience, and as it does. Drop the judgement. Drop thefalse sense of control. Drop all the ideas of saving face, or what yourface really is. Who you are is a constantly refreshed river, alwaysnew. Open wide and let pain and pleasure, highs and lows teach you, they burn off all that is no longer serving your journey and fill youwith fresh love and light. Balance diligence and receptivity, and youwill learn the dance. Let the experience be your guide.

QWhat do each of you suggest for waysof managing eruptive anger?

Homeopathy; Jerome PindellThis is a rather complex issue that does have a pathway leadingto resolution, if you are a willing participant in the process.

As a homeopath, i can assure you that homeopathic remedieswill assist you in enhancing the energy that you will want andneed to explore the origins and triggers of your anger. How yourespond when the anger surfaces, what you do once you areangry, and how you feel after the fact, will determine the partic-ular homeopathic remedy that could help. It will help you toraise your head above water and feel strong enough and safeenough to take the necessary steps toward healing. Suppressingthe anger with allopathic drugs will only delay a bigger break inthe precarious stability of your emotional complex.

I could also recommend hypnosis as a means of relaxing into theprocess of exploring your feelings, and finding tools to feel safe andempowered in your search for the reasons that anger has become adefault mechanism to specific triggers. Remember that anger isoften a response to a deeper fear that is often buried in your past.

From a more spiritual perspective, self inquiry is a practice thatI have used for years. It can involve journaling or simple writ-ing about the experiences that arose in the midst of, before oreven after the fact of the anger presenting itself.

What was your response? Was it proportionate to the trigger? What were you feeling, or even, and sometimes more important-ly, not admitting to yourself in the moment? For example, didyou have a trying day at work where you were not successful in

an undertaking, or were not making the progress that you want-ed, or imagined that you should have been able to have accom-plished? Was that fatigue, frustration, self criticism in your fieldof awareness, unresolved and just waiting for an excuse to blowoff steam? But at a deeper level, where was that frustrationburied in your past? There is always a relationship to what welearned as a child and imbalanced behaviors we exhibit in ouradult lives. Writing about what you are feeling, were feeling inthe moment, can eventually lead to deeper understandings of aconnection to shame, worthlessness, despair, etc. and remindyou of other relationships and situations in your past.

Lastly, I cannot recommend highly enough the regular use ofbody work to change your body energy and maintain optimalmetabolism. Combined with some form of meditative or spiritu-al practice will take you to places that could never have beenimagined. Eckhart Tolle refers to it as presence or being in theNow. Whatever the method or the language of awakeningawareness, the tools for it are available, and it merely takes thewillingness to use all of them.

Today's world looks for simple and short term solutions to com-plex issues. Personal responsibility and integrity and honoringthe complexities of the whole, will keep a perspective of balanceand peace and it will lead to evening the eruptions of anger, andsettling the underlying triggers within. Trust that the processwill work, and it will.

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St ClairThat’s an interesting question. We’ve had other questions aboutanxiety or depression but never one as specific as how to dealwith anger. One might think we need to leave the treatment ofanger to a therapist but when we think of the body, mind andemotions being connected it becomes evident that anger can bepart of bigger issues. Our physical health affects our mood so themore we can work on the basics of health; including exercise, stress reduction, diet, sleep and drinking water; the better chancewe have of controlling our emotions.

Actually, in Chinese Medicine, the emotions have always beenconsidered a possible cause of disease. We have five main emo-tions; Joy, Worry/Stress, Sadness, Fear and Anger. It is normalto experience every emotion from time to time; like waves lap-ping at the shoreline sometimes they’re peaceful, sometimeschoppy, and sometimes tempestuous. So anger itself is not theproblem, it’s what we do with it. If anger turns to rage and rageto violence, we know we are having a problem.

Some people are blinded by the anger and don’t realize what theyare doing at the time. The unfortunate result can be verbal orphysical abuse of those we love. I’ve had some patients on thebrink of divorce because of anger issues of their spouse.

In Chinese Medicine we call anger Liver Qi Rising and we haveherbs and acupuncture treatments specifically designed to helpcontrol the emotions. Working on your personal life can be agreat help. You might need therapy but also try meditation orstress reduction exercise like yoga. A specific exercise I can rec-ommend would be to put your hands on your abdomen andbreathe in gently to feel your stomach rise. This helps to keep theliver qi down, reduce your heartbeat and blood pressure and con-trol your mind and emotions.

One way to help manage anger is to change our perspective tolooking it as a good thing. Get help if you need it, but in the end,we want to rule our emotions and habits; not be ruled by them.Whenever something makes us angry, we can look it as a gift andan opportunity to practice.

Gregg St Clair can be reached at 518-383-1230 or visitwww.stclairfamilyhealth.com

Chiropractor; Lynn AllisonI approach this in a general manner- the more distressed you are,the less chance of feeling you need to erupt. Anger seems relat-ed to unexpressed feelings so I encourage some form of talk ther-apy and evaluation of the strength of your support system.

Often we feel all alone in chaos which is out of our control. Ifyou gain a stronger sense of yourself, what many call “beinggrounded”, you can gather your energy to nourish rather thanerupt in anger. Craniosacral therapy aids in grounding and theawareness of your “center” as would meditation, yoga or TaiChi. Smell is the most responsive sense we have so using aro-matherapy to use to counter the anger. Lavender is known tosoothe the savage beast and is easy to find, use and appreciate.

34 Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

by Mark Verner Frederick

Iwas about to leave the library with my newly checked-outbooks under my arm, when I caught sight of her. It was Silviaand she was reading the back cover of a book before re-filing

it into its appropriate place on the book shelf. I called to her, interrupting her thought process and when she looked up and sawme, we exchanged heartfelt smiles and then walked towards oneanother and shared a tender hug.

When I first met Silvia back in 2005, my wife and I were new tothe area. We were, and continue to be, big library users and sothe entire library staff became “friends”. But Silvia, more thanany other, found a special place in our hearts. She is an openbook whose life unfolds around her and incorporates those peo-ple – especially the children - who walk through the heavy oakdoors of the Carnegie-built Amsterdam Free Library.

Over the years, we learned all about each other – our past, our fam-ilies, what brought and continues to bring meaning to our lives…andwith such familiarity, we became a part of each other’s family. Andthat’s when the hugs started…and they’ve never ended. Somehow,we got around to disclosing our ages and she found something thatabstractly connected the two of us and said, “You’re 48 and I’m 84– the same numbers, just reversed…”, or something to that effect. That conversation took place many years ago, yet both of us fondlyrecall how, in some way, it initiated our friendship.

Silvia met our granddaughter Lorelei, when she got old enough toattend “Toddler Time”, which was held each Monday morning atthe library. And on each of those Monday mornings, we’d stop andsee Silvia. Over the years she watched as Lorelei, and in time, her

younger brother Aydan…grew up. And each week Silvia lookedforward to a hug from Joan and I…and eventually Lorelei andAydan (when he’d allow it). And that is perhaps, the biggest lessonthat Silvia taught us – to give a heartfelt hug to those who bringmeaning to your life. It doesn’t matter where you are or who seesthe shared love – in fact, perhaps it is most important that we’veshared hugs in front of the book check-out counter, for all to see.

Hugs are good medicine – they show we care…at a deep level. Andthose that receive them are infused with what few medications canduplicate – Love. Heartfelt hugs trigger healing endorphins to bereleased and we “know” that someone else cares about our well-being, which can make an incredible difference in our lives.

After my last visit to the library when Silvia and I talked, I realizedwhat I love about her more than any other thing; she sees the good!Oftentimes, as we age, we tend to look for, and find, what we don’tlike in this world, letting such thoughts act like dark clouds that sitabove our busy minds. But Silvia, for as long as I’ve known her, bucks that trend. She, rather than looking for and finding what’swrong…looks for and finds…what’s right. And as a result, she is abeacon of peace and joy that draws me in every time I see her.

Silvia has been and continues to be one of my professors thathave shared their wisdom with me over the years. Her lessonplan is simple and yet, enlightening: sharing one’s life story withthe dancers we come into contact with, bring meaning, growth, and happiness in unexpected places…and add chapters that, hadthey been missed, would have left a gaping hole.

And so, I want to thank you, Silvia, for the lessons, the friendship;and perhaps most of all…for the hugs. Love to you as this NewYear begins, one of your special friends…Daniel Boone (Mark).
